        Four Quartets [signed]

Faber & Faber, London 1960 - Number 202 of 290, quarto size, [54] pp., signed by the author. The Four Quartets is widely considered to be one of T. S. Eliot's (1888-1965) finest works, besides The Waste Land. Consisting of four interlinked meditations which blend Eliot's Anglo-Catholicism with mystical and philosophical works, drawing from both East and West. Contemporary Ezra Pound was immediately drawn to Eliot's work, drawing him into his circle and assisting him in publishing his work. Eliot's poems are marked by a strong influence from seventeenth century metaphysical poets and nineteenth century Symbolists. There is no finer way to read Eliot than in the fine letterpress editions printed by Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977) at Officina Bodoni, known for the highest quality craftsmanship. The present volume is printed in Dante type, one of the innovative types designed by Mardersteig after earlier Humanist typefaces. ***DESCRIPTION: Marbled paper boards, quarter white parchment, backstrip lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, white endpapers, colophon with Officina Bodoni device printed in red, Dante type, handmade paper by Fratelli Magnani, Pescia, 12" x 8", [2 blank leaves], [1]-53, [54], [1 colophon], [2 blank leaves], limited edition (Mardersteig edition), number 202 of 290, signed by T. S. Eliot. Enclosed in publisher's original matching marbled paper slipcase. ***CONDITION: Near fine copy, with clean binding, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, straight corners, internally bright with no marks or foxing, and entirely free of prior owner markings; only the faintest hint of rubbing at the edges where the book has come in and out of the slipcase, otherwise without flaw, a stunning copy. The matching slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy with minor overall rubbing. ***CITATION: Gallup, A43c. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.       1960. Loose sheets; hole punches to margin (as for a binder). Some edgewear and some tearing to hole punches. Overall, a read but well-preserved unique item of gay erotic ephemera.. 146 pages [23pp + pp. 1-113 (lacking two or three sheets; two different sheets share the same number) + xii pp art]. Original typescript, typed on one side of 8 1/2 x 11" paper with three-hole punches to left margin. Includes 12 pages of art by Etienne [Dom Orejudos], in his 'Stephen' style of b/w line art. Art pages have browned, suggesting Kodak Verifax or Thermofax reproduction. This novel-length typescript features a rich variety of gay erotic and S/M scenes, many featuring incest; a series of dream sequences permits a wild series of sexual motifs, from such staples as leather, boots, Marines, bikers, uniforms, and jockstraps -- to golden showers, Nazis, castration, human pincushions, and devious & deviant bondage. All art is directly relevant to the story. Story begins: "What the hell are you looking at?" my father asked, as he caught me staring at his sweating bulging crotch. We were in our rowboat at the fishing camp in the North Woods." The father is a lineman nicknamed "Big Dick"; when Jim the son can't conceal his hard-on, the cat's out of the bag and they admit their mutual lust. Hijinks ensue: Dad talks about his experiences as a Marine, etc., and the two go at it . When he goes off to town, Jim has a series of dreams: a state trooper; motorcyclists in a S/M & bondage scene with a truck driver in the desert. Dad wakes Jim up for some Marine role-playing, boot worship, etc. More dreams follow: workman 'Hercules' enslaved by and tortured by Nazi Bruno; a prince is castrated on an altar; cowboys Ed and Tex in a flagellation scene; then Dad wakes him up for some more rough Marine-style training, before some lumberjacks arrive to gangbang Jim. Jim passes the test, and now the slave becomes the master. Part Two: Jimmy, now in charge, plays with Dick; burns off his pubic hair, subjects him to rough bondage and more. Dream sequence: Marines on a troop transport. Then, back in the real world: Ski, a Polish biker, shows up for more rough fun. (Numbered typescript ends here; the story continues with a 23-page section, pages lettered a-v; final, unlettered page states THE END). In this final section (following seamlessly from the previous), the guys go at it in wild and varied ways, including Ski lighting a candle that's up Jim's ass (this page seen in ETIENNE - EROTICA: Book 1 (The Tom of Finland Company, 1999); Ski binding father and son's penises together with rubber bands (a copy or variation of this seen in Falkon's HISTORIC COLLECTION OF GAY ART). Story ends with father and son diligently polishing Ski's boots. Quite the epic! Note: 2-3 pages are missing. This is a fairly rough typescript, with some corrections and white-out; two pages are assigned 48. Pages 61 and 82 are clearly missing; there are continuity gaps and/or text breaks. Page 57 may or may not be missing; Tex is whipping Ed hard, Ed seems to climax at the end of page 56, and near the beginning of page 58 Ed's creaming his pants is noted. If a page is missing, it's not noticeable. Former owner has placed this in a plain, unrelated dark red folder; small "Leather Fraternity" sticker on corner. The Leather Fraternity was for subscribers fo DRUMMER Magazine; perks included a free personal ad.

Flower, Fist and Bestial Wail (First Edition, author's edition with original illustration by Bukowski)

Eureka, CA: Hearse Press, 1960. First Edition. First Edition. One of no more than five "author's edition" copies with an original illustration by the author bound in. During the 1970s, Bukowski still had a number of copies of this book and decided to make between three and five unique copies by binding in original artwork or poetry--beginning a practice that would continue later with the author's Black Sparrow Press publications. The author's literary debut, a chapbook of poetry, preceded by two broadsides. The illustration in this copy shows an old man pointing his cane (or possibly gun) at a young boy and growling: "What do you know about sex?" Bukowski would go on to international fame and become one of the most prolific modern writers on the west coast, continuing an ethos begun by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and John Fante. Publisher's illustrated saddle-stitched wrappers, 8.25 x 5.35 inches, 28 unnumbered pages. Fine. In a cloth clamshell box, Near Fine. Krumhansl 3.

        The Enemy Within.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers,, 1960. Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine, untrimmed. With the dust jacket. 14 pages of monochrome illustrations from photographs. Slight fading along board edges, tiny stain to top edge, an excellent copy with the jacket slightly rubbed at the ends and corners. First edition, first printing (copyright page signed "A-K", later printings are signed "D-K"), presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To my old antagonist Senator Goldwater from his friend Bob Kennedy". This is a great cross-party association for Bobby Kennedy's first book, which concerns the McLellan Committee's enquiry into union and management corruption, focussing on Jimmy Hoffa's links to organised crime. Barry Morris Goldwater (1909–1998), who is mentioned on 22 pages in the book, was five-term United States Senator from Arizona (1953–65, 1969–87) and the Republican Party's nominee for President in the 1964 election. He is the politician most often credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. His landslide defeat to Lyndon B. Johnson opened the door for Johnson and a Congress dominated by Democrats to pass the Great Society programs. Goldwater returned to the Senate in 1969, by which time the leadership of the conservative movement had moved to Reagan. In 1974 Goldwater was the man who successfully urged Richard Nixon (whom he described as "the most dishonest individual I have ever met in my life") to resign at the height of the Watergate scandal. Goldwater retired in 1987, and was succeeded in office by John McCain.

THE FIRST FUNCTIONING BRAIN | ORGASM THEORY | VELOCITY | SCIENCE [Five texts]; Intelligence Creation | A Major Breakthrough in Science

Published by the author, 1960. Text printed from ditto machine, stapled in corner. Minor wear. Housed in manila envelope. Very good.. Five texts, approximately 56 pp. total, printed from spirit duplication (ditto machine). Illustrated with symbolic equations, graphs amd charts. Papin studied English, then physics at the University of Washington, finding the physics department too limiting. The work presented here is an eccentric mix of science, poetry, and biology -- the influences of Enistein and Wilhelm Reich are apparent. Papin offers mathematical proofs as well as poems and literary references to supplement his theories, and these can develop (or degenerate, take your pick) into a kind of symbolic drawing. One of the stranger collections to pass across this cataloguer's desk, and a pretty fascinating example of alternative / otherstream thought and imagination. Contains: THE FIRST FUNCTIONING BRAIN. Two editions. 13 pp (plus cover), 10 + ix pp. The latter has a notepaper-clipped to it, '1. Mathematical Biophysics Bioenergetics. 2. The Calculus of Related Algebraic Variables. Two copies are presented to show variations / developments in the author's thought. "In the evening of July 17, 1961, at Washington Bay, Alaska, I wrote down Einstein's basic formula of mass energy equivalence E=MC2 and trying to find a relation between this formula and emotion I pondered the question, "to the square of the speed of light." [ ..] Time seems to be a continuous series of squares of the speed of light, one times the other..." Contain a list and synopsis of Papin's Theories (Orgasm, Creation, Time, Fourth Dimension, Unity, Mystery, Space, Emotion, etc.). Hand-written dedication to Norman H. Roberts, a University of Washington physicist. Papers are in an envelope bearing Dr. Roberts' address at UW's Applied Physics Lab. ORGASM THEORY (1964) 10pp. "The square of Light is the physical orgasm." VELOCITY 10 pp. Begins with Dylan Thomas' poem, "The Force That through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower," followed by Papin's rewrite / response to it. With other poems: "Albert Einstein," "Theatre of Mind" and lists; "Hieroglyphic Symbols" SCIENCE 4pp. A sort of manifesto, with 33 theses and essay. No dates on any of the papers; note clipped to Orgasm Theory dated 1964. Papin had two books published by the Vantage Press, New York: The Mathematics of Sex, and Sex, Symbolism, and the Bible.

        Green Eggs and Ham.

New York: Random House, 1960. First edition, later printing of this Dr. Seuss classic. Octavo, original illustrated boards, pictorial endpapers, illustrated. Inscribed by the author opposite the title page, "One extra egg for Michael Polk Dr. Seuss." Dr. Seuss has added a drawing of a green egg. In fine condition. Rare and desirable with a drawing by Dr. Seuss. This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, finally the doubter caves under the tremendous pressure exerted by the tireless Sam-I-am. And guess what? Well, you probably know what happens, but even after reading Green Eggs and Ham the thousandth time, the climactic realization that green eggs and ham are "so good, so good, you see" is still a rush.
