        Zwei Gramm Licht

Zurich: Interbooks, (1960). Very close to fine in a fine jacket; uncommon thus.. First Edition. Quarto. Afterward by Georg Ramseger. Haunting images of midfifties Europe shot in a dark lush gravure. While the tone of the book is set by the first spread: a Munich shantytown muddied in the aftermath of war, the cinematic swagger of Wicki's work is enough to mitigate what might otherwise be mistaken for a survey of destruction. Little-known book (at least in North America) given its due by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. (Parr / Badger, v1, 215; Auer 400).

Grand Canyon River Guide Scroll Map

Western River Guides Association, Heber City, UT 1960 - From Herm Hoop's History of River Guides on the Colorado River System: "Les Jones, of Heber City, Utah, was an engineer and avid river runner. Jones began running rivers at the age of eleven. He built a kayak, running most rivers solo, and taking movies from a camera mounted on a football helmet. By the early 1950's Les began taping USGS maps together and filling in the missing contours. Les began using aerial photos, USGS maps and his own drawings and notes to trace and draw detailed maps on a scroll paper strips 7-10 inches wide. The maps were not waterproof and faded in sunlight, so they had to be protected from water and sunlight. Later his maps were copied onto waterproof mylar. Jones copied a river profile on the map above the river segments, labeling rapids and features on both. The maps contained rapid ratings, drawings of major rapids, Powell and other historic river camps, historic inscriptions and other detailed information. Les' maps were some of the first maps to contain conservation messages." One of Jones's river scroll maps for the Grand Canyon. Dark blue mimeographed text and map. Includes an alert about the proposed Marble Canyon dam within the Grand Canyon. 7" wide paper scroll map is of unknown length when unrolled. In original plastic packaging with attached paper instructions. Some edgewear, few small tears visible. Fascinating piece of river-running history!

        Adult Pulp Cover Original Art

[Circa early 1960s]. A collection of original artwork for several adult-oriented paperback pulp novels from the early 1960s, including six small color mockups, measuring 4" x 7", and four large preliminary pencil sketches, measuring 20"x 26". The sketches have an applied paper boarder secured with masking tape and are somewhat chipped along the edges, near fine, while the mockups have only the slightest touch of wear to a couple of corners, else fine. The art appears to be all from the same unknown artist with the preliminary sketches representing more detailed renditions of all but two of the color mock ups. The text on the mockups is not readable except for the titles and a few scattered words, likely as intended. Our research was not able to determine definitively whether these covers were ever published or if these are spec illustrations done by an artist to secure work. The Exotic by Carter Brown was published several times, the earliest being a 1961 Signet paperback, but neither it nor any of the other printings we examined matched the artwork found here. This is also the case for The Night It Happened, Demon Lovers, and Big Blondes. The remaining two titles illustrated here, Wild Heat and Adorable Creatures, could not be located at all. Likewise we were unable to identify with any publisher the crossed key logo found on all but one of the covers. Two of the titles, Demon Lovers and Adorable Creatures, are particularly notable for their obvious lesbian themes. An interesting group of titillating artwork from the golden age of the pulp paperback. .

Burgess 99. & "The Alexandria Quartet is one of those works that seem to draw upon and sum up a multitude of works and writers and bodies of knowledge that have come before. Sources specific to Egypt include Constantine Cavafy's poetry and E. M. Forster's Alexandria: A History and a Guide. Other sources range from The Arabian Nights to accounts of the life of occult philosopher Paracelsus, from the obsessive erotic catalogues of the Marquis de Sade (who wrote his own Justine and who provides three of the volumes with epigraphs) to the thrillers of John Buchan. Freud is here (providing a psychological framework and yet another epigraph), as well as his student Georg Groddeck. Durrell also utilizes Einstein's theory of relativity, recounting the same events from multiple viewpoints within the first three volumes, then advancing the characters and situations through the fourth dimension, time, in the fourth and final volume. . . . Whatever the merits of the works his contemporaries were producing in the 1950s, most of those seemed cautious and provincial compared to Durrell's unabashedly romantic and experimental novels." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
