[COLLECTION OF NEARLY 300 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS BY PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER HARRY H. ADAMS, DOCUMENTING AFRICAN-AMERICAN LIFE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN THE POST WORLD WAR II-ERA, FEATURING IMAGES OF NOTABLES IN THE FIELDS OF POLITICS, ENTERTAINMENT, AND SPORTS]

Los Angeles. 1950s-1980s.. [296] original silver gelatin print photographs, measuring on average 10 1/4 x 8 inches. There are six pictures of John F. Kennedy measuring 3 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches. Many of the prints with "Harry H. Adams, Avalon Blvd Studio" stamp on verso, occasionally a date stamp on verso as well. The total number includes a few duplicate images. Mild curling, occasional creasing to edges, one photograph with a long closed tear. Faint scratching to a few, five or six photos with significant edgewear. Overall, in very good condition. A large photographic archive from noted African-American photographer, Harry H. Adams. Adams documented the African-American community in postwar Los Angeles as a freelance photographer for the city's two prominent black newspapers, the LOS ANGELES SENTINEL and the CALIFORNIA EAGLE. The images in this collection document a dynamic social scene in Los Angeles over the course of several decades, as African-Americans rose to national prominence in a variety of fields. They also show how white politicians made sure to court African- American constituencies. The collection features figures from the worlds of politics, entertainment, and sports, and ably demonstrates how often these groups interacted in the large mixing bowl of stardom in postwar southern California. The photographs in the present archive were taken at political rallies, press conferences, banquets, award ceremonies, and parties. Strikingly candid and mainly group shots, the photos feature prominent African- American political figures, actors and entertainers, musicians, and athletes of the day, as well as a number of famous white American politicians and actors. Significant among them is a group of nine photographs of Robert Kennedy at a Los Angeles rally and a meeting with members of the African-American community, as well as six 3 1/4 x 4 3/4 inch photographs of John F. Kennedy in early November, 1960 (before he was elected to the presidency), also with members of the African-American community in Los Angeles. Several photographs also show the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his wife, as well as other figures in the civil rights movement. These photographic prints descended in the family of Harry H. Adams. Also included are three related pieces of printed ephemera. The photographs include (divided by subject): POLITICS: Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King: seven pictures, including two of Martin Luther King giving a speech and another of him speaking in a church, and others of Coretta Scott King at various banquets. Kennedy family: twenty-one pictures, including six photographs of John F. Kennedy giving a speech and greeting supporters (these measure 3 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches and are dated on the verso November 1, 1960). There are also other pictures of JFK at functions and giving speeches, several photographs of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign, and photographs of Sen. Edward Kennedy and Sargent Shriver as well. Presidents and other national politicians: seventeen photographs, including of Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey (standing beside "Soul Brother #1," James Brown, who is giving an impassioned speech on Humphrey's behalf), Ronald Reagan (six photographs, as governor of California), and Jimmy Carter. Other political figures: there are nine photographs of California Governor Edmund G. "Pat" Brown and his son, Governor Jerry Brown; nine more of Tom Bradley, the first African-American mayor of Los Angeles; five of civil rights leader and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young; and photographs of Jesse Jackson, Rosa Parks, Bishop Desmond Tutu, California State Representative Willie Brown, civil rights leader Julian Bond, lawyer Johnnie Cochran, NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins, Ralph Nader, and Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates. ENTERTAINMENT: The largest number of photographs in the collection (more than hundred) feature figures from the world of entertainment, including singers, musicians, actors, comedians, authors, and more. Those whose images appear in more than one photograph include Sidney Poitier (nine photographs), Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Diana Ross (five photographs), African- American filmmaker Clarence Muse, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., author Alex Haley, child actor Rodney Allen Rippy, Stevie Wonder, Redd Foxx, Esther Rolle, Dick Van Dyke, Danny Thomas, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Steve Allen, Charlton Heston, and Bernie Casey. Other figures from the world of entertainment figured in these photographs include Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Cab Calloway, James Baldwin, Isaac Hayes, Richard Roundtree, Billy Dee Williams, Marlon Brando, James Garner, Mahalia Jackson, Nancy Wilson, Raymond Burr, Roy Rogers, Bill Cosby, Steve McQueen, pool hustler "Minnesota Fats," Bing Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Glen Campbell, Woody Strode, Anthony Quinn, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Richie Havens, Jimmy Durante, Dan Blocker, Fred MacMurray, Phyllis Diller, Bo Derek, Richard Pryor, Johnny Mathis, Jack Lemmon, Greg Morris, and Lou Rawls. SPORTS: Nearly fifty photographs feature athletes, a great number of them members of the Los Angeles Dodgers or Brooklyn Dodgers. Included are boxers Muhammad Ali (seven pictures), George Foreman (three pictures), Sugar Ray Leonard, and boxing promoter Don King. From baseball, there are four images of Jackie Robinson, five of Sandy Koufax, and four of Roy Campanella, as well as photographs of Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Reggie Jackson. Other figures from world of athletics include John Wooden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jim Brown, O.J. Simpson, and Rosey Grier. MISCELLANEOUS: There are another forty-three pictures showing social events, awards banquets, group shots of African-American subjects, and more. An outstanding collection of original photographic prints, documenting African-Americans in postwar Los Angeles, and featuring the most prominent names from the worlds of politics, entertainment, and sports.

My own deep conviction about the destinies of free men is that from February 15 their movements are liable to be severely constricted

1960. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink with blue pencil crayon on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 4 February 1960, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Two commuters contemplate the threatened rail strikes, and make their priorities clear. In his historically important "Wind of Change" speech of the previous day, Harold Macmillan made clear that the British government intended to pursue a policy of decolonization in Africa, and referring to South Africa persistence with apartheid had warned; "that there are some aspects of your policies which make it impossible for us to do this without being false to our own deep convictions about the political destinies of free men to which in our own territories we are trying to give effect." No wind of change on the 7:15 from Esher. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
