        [Heavenly Monkey] Metal Type

(Vancouver, BC): Heavenly Monkey, 2013. (Vancouver, BC): Heavenly Monkey, 2013. Small quarto. (18), (8)ff. One of fifteen deluxe copies specially bound by Claudia Cohen. The deluxe edition also contains two additional sections, four leaves each, presenting four uncommon foundry types and the titling fonts of eight faces already included in the book. Following the colophon are also two proof leaves printed over with commentary in silver ink. This work celebrates the many varieties of metal type "purchased for, adopted by, & abandoned at Heavenly Monkey during the studio's first fifteen years" and is printed on a selection of nine different papers collected during the same period. The types range from elegant Garamond and Eric Gill's classic Perpetua to the narrow, futuristic Huxley Vertical and calligraphic Reiner Script. In the introduction, press proprietor Rollin Milroy notes that many of the types are printed here for the first time since they arrived at the studio. Instead of simply printing the alphabet in each font, each page was intuitively improvised around a general design idea at the time of printing. The book includes quotations related to some of the fonts, and one sample is a leaf originally printed in 1960 from Kuthan's Menagerie, with a marginal gloss added in red by Milroy. Most pages were printed in at least two colors, some metallic, requiring multiple passes through the printing press. Extremely fine in gilt-tooled vellum with alphabets gilt-stamped to the centers of the covers and paste-downs. Housed in a gold cloth-covered box lined with decorated paper. A remarkable and creative specimen book.

On the Sources of Knowledge and of Ignorance

London: Oxford University Press,, 1960. London: Oxford University Press,, 1960. Annual Philosophical Lecture, Henrietta Hertz Trust, British Academy. 1960. from the Proceedings of the British Academy, Volume XLVI. Octavo. Original grey wrappers printed in black. Spine and wrappers a little creased at the head of the spine also affecting the contents. An excellent copy. Offprint from the Proceedings of the British Academy. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the upper wrapper, "To Mario and Marta, from Karl and Hennie". The present volume is an important contribution by Popper to the debate over the nature of knowledge and truth, suggesting that we "give up the idea of ultimate sources of knowledge, and admit that all knowledge is human; that it is mixed with our errors, our prejudices, our dreams, and our hopes; that all we can do is grope for truth even though it be beyond our reach". The recipient was Mario Bunge (1919– ), a physicist and philosopher on the faculty of McGill University who has written and edited more than 80 books, including the eight-volume Treatise on Basic Philosophy, published between 1974 and 1989. Like Popper, he is particularly concerned with the nature of knowledge and with philosophy's relationship to the sciences, and in 1962 he edited a collection of essays in celebration of Popper's sixtieth birthday, Critical Approaches to Science and Philosophy. An excellent association.

[Avati, James] [Forester, C. S.] UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C. S. FORESTER. One of the few extant Avati paintings illustrating major works by major 20th century authors still available to commerce. 14 x 12 inches, executed in oil on board-mounted canvas, colors still bright and vivid, in strikingly fresh condition. Museum quality framed-and-matted to a dimension of 16 x 14 inches. Avati's original painting for the first paperback version of Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE (1953) recently sold for $21,510.00 at auction (October, 2010). His original painting for the first paperback version (1952) of Christopher Isherwood's GOODBYE TO BERLIN (auctioned July 2009) fetched $26,290.00. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as William Faulkner for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism without any compromising sentimentality. In the primary reference book "The Paperback Art Of James Avati" (Piet Schreuders & Kenneth Fulton, 2005), this painting is illustrated on p. 160. The distinction of this painting may be obvious to those familiar with Avati's work: the lush jungle green landscape which surrounds the central figures is an unusually dynamic departure for Avati and his decision to interpret the novel's most iconic image, Charlie and Rose pulling the celebrated "African Queen" through the twisted, overwhelming jungle vines of the Ulanga River in German East Africa in an attempt to outfox the World War One German Imperial Forces, has produced something very special. John Huston's film version starring Humphrey Bogart (in his only Oscar-winning role) and Katharine Hepburn is one of the American Film Institute's 100 best films ever made. The novel itself is today, along with the Horatio Hornblower series, the best known and best loved of C. S. Forester's (1899-1966) lifetime achievement of more than fifty works of fiction. James Avati produced this painting for Bantam Books #A2111 in August of 1960. . Illus. by James Avati.

I do hope, Woodrow, that you won't begin to snake-dance or start shouting Banzai outside Tribune's offices too soon

, 1960. 1960. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink with blue pencil crayon on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 17 June 1960, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. An eccentric gadfly of the left, Woodrow Wyatt had recently had a falling out with the Labour Party weekly Tribune, for which he had written in the past, over his attack on TGWU secretary Frank Cousins. The "snake-dancing" and banzai references relate to the curious demonstrations which had recently caused the cancellation of President Eisenhower's visit to Japan. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
