Darling, I know I ought to feel absolutely mizz about Dick Crossman, but all I really feel is good-oh for Polly Elwes

1960. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink with overlaid crosshatched film on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 16 March 1960, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Polly Elwes, BBC announcer and reporter, married sports broadcaster Peter Dimmock on 12 March. The Dick Crossman reference likely relates to his election as chairman of the National Executive of the Labour Party. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

The Dolmen Chapbook: A Miscellany in Twelve Parts. [The Ballad of Jane Shore; A Wexford Carol; The Perfect Wife; Thirty Three Triads; Death of a Queen; The Mines of Siberiay; The Loves of Bregog and Mulla; O'Reilly; Irish Elegies; Angel Songs; A Gaelic Alphabet; Moralities.]

Dublin: The Dolmen Press, November 1954 – March 1960 - 12 pamphlets housed loosely in the original paper wrappers. Occasional minor creases. An excellent set. Rare complete set of the Dolmen chapbooks in the original paper wrappers. "The idea behind the Dolmen chapbooks was to print short texts with illustrations, using various type formats and techniques within a uniform page size The series gives a fair picture of the very personal interests which informed the Press at this time, and several of the titles were issued in other formats" (Miller 17). The set of twelve pamphlets is divided into three groups of four, each with a paper wrapper, and with the series wrapper enclosing the complete set. Most of the individual pamphlets were published in editions of only 250, and complete sets are extremely uncommon. Miller 17 [Attributes: First Edition]

        Excerpts from Visions of Cody

(New York: New Directions, 1960). One of 750 numbered copies signed by the author. Selections from Kerouac's lengthy character study of Neal Cassady, who appears here as the title character, Cody Pomeray. It was in On the Road that Kerouac first immortalized Cassady as the frenzied, charismatic Beat firgure Dean Moriarty. Their friendship was intense and mutually influential, even if the two more or less parted ways in the Sixties, when Cassady took up with the Merry Pranksters and became involved in the San Francisco psychedelic scene. Cassady has been credited with helping to transform Kerouac's writing from a traditional narrative style to the tumbling, "first thought best thought" mode for which he is so well known. Indeed, in the preface to this book, Kerouac comments that his intention was to write "an enormous paen which would unite my vision of America with words spilled out in the modern spontaneous method. Instead of just a horizontal account of travels on the road, I wanted a vertical, metaphysical study of Cody's character. . . ." Bound in cream boards backed in purple cloth, in original acetate wrapper. Very minor bump at top edge of upper board, small closed tears to acetate at spine head and foot, else a very fine copy. Publisher's announcement laid in.

The End of Ideology was one of the most influential, most controversial, and most misunderstood books about the 1950s. Photograph of Audrey Hepburn

London: , 1960. Original gelatin silver print mounted on textured paper by the artist. Image Size: 37 x 28 cm. A couple of light marks in the image, only visible very close up. Presented in a black wooden frame with UV glass. Signed and dated beneath the image lower right in pencil by McBean. Also inscribed on the verso of the mount by McBean "Copyright Angus McBean 1960. Studio portrait of Audrey Hepburn". This photograph formed part of McBean's estate that was bequeathed to his partner and studio assistant, David Ball. Ball was in his late teens when he met McBean. They became lovers and life-long companions, and was Angus McBean's sole heir. In 1951 Audrey Hepburn was merely a chorus girl with a contract to appear in minor decorative roles in a handful of British films. Using her as a model for an advertisement campaign for Crookes sun lotion, McBean made one of his characteristically surreal compositions, with her head and bare shoulders protruding out of sand alongside miniature classical columns. The photograph appeared in chemists' windows throughout the country, and has been credited with earning her the screen test that led to her star-making role in William Wyler's romantic comedy, Roman Holiday (1952).
