Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1960. 45pp. Printed by Enschedé en Zonen in Holland. Featuring a designer binding by the renowned English binder James Brockman. A church steeple, represented with an onlay of bright red morocco, is depicted on the spine of the book and serves as a lettering piece for the title. The steeple rises above a churchyard comprised of onlays of moss-green morocco, with the silhouettes of graves and crosses stamped in dark gray. The decoration is set against a background of deep violet morocco. Four rows of rose-shaped tooling, in various shades of gold leaf and palladium, suggest lines of poetry. The text of the book is accompanied by several full-page illustrations printed in green, along with a frontispiece portrait of the author. Brockman's work is in major public and private collections in England and the United States, including the Victoria and Albert Museum. He first apprenticed as a gold finisher, ascending to Sydney Cockerell's assistant for five years and later working with another master binder, Ivor Robinson. Brockman is a leader in innovative binding design and former president of the Designer Bookbinders. Housed in a violet buckram box lined with purple velvet, gilt-titled to spine. A.e.g. (2 3/8 by 1 5/8; 61x42mm).

        The Caretaker

Methuen & Co., London 1960 - First Methuen edition, wrappered issue (preceded slightly by an acting edition). A small crease on the front wrap, a little soiling, a pleasing, very good copy in a cloth clamshell case with leather spine label. This is Pinter's own copy, unsigned, but apparently used as either a prompt copy or in revising the play for radio, with corrections (mostly deletions, some of them very substantive on nearly every page). Formerly the property of his first wife Vivien Merchant. The Nobel laureate's own copy of one of his first major works. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

COBOL: Initial specifications for a COmmon Business Oriented Language

Superintendent Of Documents Government Printing Off, Washington, D.c. 1960 - FIRST EDITION of the first report on COBOL, the first computer programming language designed to run on all computers, regardless of make or model. With over a hundred pages of extremely rare related material. s computer use began to grow throughout the 1950's, there was rapidly developing a need for a programming language that was not computer-specific. As outlined in the introduction of this seminal report: "On May 28 and 29, 1959, a meeting was called in the Pentagon for the purpose of considering both the desireablility and the feasibility of establishing a common language for the programming of electronic computers in business-type data processing. Representatives from users, Government installations, computer manufacturers and other interested parties were present. There was almost unanimous agreement that the project was both desirable and feasible at this time. The concept of three committees or task forces was agreed upon. The Committee held meetings between September 18 and November 7, 1959, and proceeded steadily in its task of resolving problems and completing the language. The name 'COBOL', which suggests a COmmon Business Oriented Language, was adopted. Final editing and initial distribution of the report to the Executive Committee was accomplished December 17, 1959." The COBOL report is contained in a three-ring binder with Remington Rand UNIVAC labels on front and spine that includes a massive amount of material presumably distributed to individuals attending the "Remington Rand UNIVAC Computer Seminar for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations" from December 5th to 9th, 1960 (as noted on general title page for binder). The binder is divided into seven sections labeled: Computer Fundamentals; System Fundamentals; Design App. of Advanced System; System Simulation and Games; System Languages; Plan Imp. of Computer Sys; and Examp. of Adv. Sys. Equipment. Among the approximately 30 printed and mimeographed items are texts of lectures, biographies of the participants, and various Remington Rand UNIVAC publications. Washington, D.C.: Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, 1960. Quarto, original blue printed wrappers. Contained in a three-ring binder (with corresponding three punch holes for COBOL article) with extensive amount of related material. Housed in custom cloth box. Binder with portion of label rubbed off; generally fine condition throughout. The COBOL report itself is scarce; with all the associated material, the collection provides a possibly unique opportunity to acquire material that thoroughly documents a critical moment in the history of the computer.         Pair of Framed Manuscript Leaves: German Breviary.

(Typed indentification slip on back of one frame reads: Breviary (MSS.) Old German, early 15th Century). - Size of frames: 8 1/2" x 10"; approx. size of framed vellum leaves: 3 14" x 4 1/8". The first leaf features a large initial M in blue & heading & highlighting of capitals in red; 12 lines in brown ink. Second framed leaf (not shown in scan) is 13 lines in brown ink with similar red titling & highlighting. Both are matted in a gold-surfaced wooden, glass-fronted frame, with beaded border; with brown backing paper & typed label (on St. Michael leaf), & hanging wire on back of both; most likely framed in the 1960's. Backings show a stain from dealer's/framer's labels (?) which were removed, some wear to brown paper backing; else, frames & leaves are in fine condition. Leaves in the Germanic languages are much rarer than Latin text leaves. Leaf number one, features the beginning of a prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel; leaf two concludes this, or another similar prayer & begins another prayer "To All The Angels". Cannot guarantee that the identification on the typed slip is correct, but the leaves are genuine hand written leaves on vellum, in a Germanic language & could easily have been produced in the 15th century. Sold as a framed pair only. Weight: 2 lbs. (Aprrox. text on front of first leaf:) Vo[n] Sanct Michel Michahel du er' engel de almethtigen gottes wan du kumen bist zu helffen dem volcke gottis kumer mir sunder zu hylffe mit allem himelschen here der engel und er wirb mir vergebung aller mmer su[n]den O du diener der hohen gotheit Erhoere mich hut und standt fur mich Also das du an mine[m]iungsten (Approx. text on second leaf:) tage gutlich und lieplich in din schosse entpfahest mi' sele und su tragest an die stat des frides und ruwe alle. heiligen da die sele in un us' sprecher froide butten des zu kunfftigen gerichts gottis und der us' er welten frolichen urstende Amen.         Lobby Cards]: A Collection of Motion Picture Title Cards from the 1950s

no publisher], [No place 1960 - A collection of 25 decorative title cards for a range of motion pictures released between 1952 -1960. Each measures approximately 14" x 11". There is some wear to the extremities, a few scattered creases, and a bit of rubbing, but overall near fine with surprisingly bright colors. Each card has been screenprinted on the verso of a movie poster that was trimmed to match the dimensions of a typical lobby card. Movie theaters would occasionally commission local sign makers to produce lobby cards for display. The production symbols on many of the cards indicate they were created in the same years as the films they represent. Among the most notable titles in the collection are: *From Here to Eternity*, *Shane*, *Duel in the Sun*, *Stalag 17*, and *Gidget*. An attractive set of mid-century film memorabiliaA complete list is available upon request.
