Violently Accusatory Correspondence with CBS and Rod Serling

1960. unbound. An impassioned and violently accusatory correspondence sparked by the CBS Playhouse 90 production of "In the Presence of Mine Enemies," concerning the Warsaw Ghetto teleplay by Rod Serling, which was viewed by Uris "with total disbelief and revulsion at what I considered to be the most disgusting dramatic presentation in the history of American television...It could not have been a more perfect piece of Nazi apologetics if it had been produced by Joseph Goebbels..." This archive includes five main items, including: (1) a typed copy of a telegram that Uris sent on May 19, 1960, to CBS president Frank Stanton; (2) Stanton's original reply -- a one-page typed letter signed, 11 x 8.5 inches, on CBS letterhead on May 20, 1960; (3) the seven-page working copy of the letter Uris sent in response, 11 x 8.5 inches, heavily penciled and corrected in red by Uris himself; (4) a final/revised carbon of the letter that Uris actually sent to Stanton on June 1, 1960; (5) a carbon of a four-page letter Uris sent in response to Rod Serling on June 13, 1960. (Serling's original letter not included.) Several newspaper clippings are enclosed with the archive. The two original items in this archive -- Stanton's letter and Uris's draft -- are both in very good condition.

Diverse formaten. Op divers briefpapier. Alleen recto.

Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum novam telluris theoriam ac historiam quintae monarchiae adhuc nobis incognitae, exhibens e bibliotheca B. Abelini.Copenhagen and Leipzig, Friedrich Christian Pelt, 1754. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, folding map and 6 full-page plates, engraved by Brühl. 19th-century boards, covered with marbled paper.

Gove, pp. 303-305; Stammhammer II, p. 171; cf. McNelis (ed.), The Journey of Niels Klim to the World Underground (Nebraska, 1960). Third, corrected and enlarged edition of this influential utopian novel. Holberg uses the voyage as an instrument of philosophical and moral satire, "to correct popular error and to distinguish the semblance between vice and virtue from the reality", as he later explained in his Memoirs. The work, first published in 1741, went through some 60 editions, it was translated into many languages and ranks among the most popular (utopian) novels of the 18th century. Among novels about fantasy worlds, only Swift's Gulliver's Travels was more popular.Good copy.

EXCERPTS FROM VISIONS OF CODY - LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED - COPY #1

New Directions, New York 1960 - One of 750 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy No.1. Octavo; 3/4 white paper over quarter purple cloth, with titles stamped in silver on spine and printed in purple and red on front panel; acetate dustwrapper; 128pp, [1]; illus; publisher's original printed prospectus laid in. Top edge slightly dusty, upper board edges lightly rubbed, with upper right corner tips gently tapped, though still sharp; Near Fine in a Near Fine, lightly-rubbed wrapper. Housed in a handsome half morocco and marbled paper slipcase. Culled from the pages of his 512-page manuscript, the excerpts from Kerouac's novel 'Visions of Cody' were shaped by his publisher at New Directions into a tight, cohesive package - something Kerouac's original manuscript lacked. At the center of the novel was Neal Cassady, a dominant influence in Kerouac's life who, as Dean Moriarty in 'On the Road,' achieved literary immortality. It would be another 13 years before the novel was published in full, some four years after Kerouac's death. Not an uncommon book, but as copies go, one could hardly do better than copy No.1. Charters A9. [Attributes: First Edition]
