A Hunter's Sketches. (Classics of Russian Literature). Edited by O. Gorchakov; Designed by A. Belyukis [In a Frantisek Kusy Designer Bookbinding].

Foreign Language Publishing House Moscow. Printed in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Undated; ca. 1960's-70's. Bookbinding initialed & dated: F[rantiskek] K[usy] [19]86. - Size of bookbinding on the English Language printing of Turgenev's "A Hunter's Sketches": 5 1/4 in. x 7 5/8 in., [456] pp. (including notes in English); black & white photograph of a portrait of Turgenev in hunter’s outfit, with a rifle, and fur cap in his pocket; with facsimile signature; titlepage printed in black & green, with a small vignette. Size of leather hunter’s bag: 10 ½ in. x 7 ½ in. x 3 ¼ in. (thick). The bag is constructed of greenish-brown brushed leather, with brown leather fringes and sewing, and brown suede leather tab (closure) and mounted exterior casing for holding five empty (SBP 12/Czechoslovakia) cartridges; shoulder belt is made of matching greenish-brown brushed leather with brown suede undersurface, and brass rings & fasteners; interior is lined with fine-surfaced brown suede leather with central space to hold the book and its fur wraparound, and with a smaller side compartment that holds four mounted, empty cartridges. The book has been finely bound in brown, polished leather with titling on spine deeply impressed and filled with brown, and a design of blind-stamped, or filled crossed lines on the covers, with the ends of two empty cartridges mounted into the front cover. The fur wraparound is the prepared pelt and head of a small animal from the forests of Czechoslovakia. The head contains a clasp mechanism (this is non-functional), and the head-piece moves away from the fore-edge of the book, so it can be opened. Top-edge is stained dark brown & polished, dark brown suede leather endpapers, followed by three flyleaves of an increasing lighter colored, brown, textured paper. Back suede paste-down is blind-stamped with the binder’s initials & date, in the lower right corner: FK86 [Frantisek Kusy, 1986]. Quite an imaginative piece of work by Czechoslovakian designer bookbinder Frantisek Kusy. The clasp mentioned above requires restoration or replacement, but otherwise, the book and the hunter’s bag are in fine condition. The text is in English. Scan shows part of the upper front & top of the hunter’s bag, and the spine of the Turgenev/Kusy volume, laid sideways Weight: 4 lbs. Postage is extra on this item. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

62 PSAUMES ET VERSETS DE LA BIBLE [with additional original color pencil drawing laid in]

[Châtenay-Malabry (Seine) ]; Lefort 1960 - Folding Case. Large Folio. Sixty-two illustrated plates. 44 cm. Nr 289 of a deluxe edition of 2000 copies. First edition. With additional original full-size drawing in 3 colors, with colored pencil, of doves and flowers, with inscription in Hebrew and signed. Housed in original folding-case, loose as issued, original colored pictorial stiff wrappers. Title translates as: "62 Psalms and Verses of the Bible. " In French. Preface by Jules Romains. "The artist Benn was a renowned Jewish painter who drew inspiration from the Bible and expressed his spiritual connection to it in a body of self-contained and highly integrated work, which was published under the title "62 Psaumes et versets de la Bible. " When the Nazis entered Paris, Benn’s worst premonitions were realized. He was rounded up together with other East European Jews and interned in a holding camp, whose inmates were ultimately destined for a concentration camp in Germany. He was held in that camp for a month, and during that time he sketched the faces of his co-internees and their surroundings. He fell into a deep depression, lost weight, and would probably have died had it not been for the efforts of his wife and friends who managed to smuggle him out of the camp. Arrangements were made to hide the couple in the basement of an apartment house in Paris. Benn and his wife remained there in hiding for the duration of the war. During his twenty six months of confinement, Benn completed a series of sixty two drawings, based on selected psalms and verses of the Bible. The remarkable feature of this body of work is that it represents a radical departure in style from of his other work, and that style, while continuing to evolve after the war, remained exclusively associated with biblical themes. He continued to use biblical themes as subject matter (e. G. , Song of Songs) , and this particular style sets these works quite apart from the other figurative and representational work he did simultaneously. Bencjon Benn (1905-1989) was born in Bialystock (Russia/Poland) into a prominent family of Jewish scholars and professionals. In 1930 he was awarded a scholarship for three years to study art in Paris where he quickly established his reputation. World War II brought an end to that life, and he was forced into hiding by the Gestapo for over two years and eventually interred in the Beanne Le Rolande camp. During this time he found inspiration in the bible and that spiritual side exploded in this work, ?62 Psalms of the Bible,? produced after the war when he had adopted the name Benn, and went on to write and and illustrate over 100 books on the Bible. Fine contents in a bright wrapper with two small tears at the rear hinge in soiled clamshell boxed, expertly reinforced at the edges. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

62 PSAUMES ET VERSETS DE LA BIBLE [with additional original color pencil drawing laid in]

[Châtenay-Malabry (Seine) ]; Lefort. 1960. Folding Case. Title translates as: “62 Psalms and Verses of the Bible. ” In French. Preface by Jules Romains. “The artist Benn was a renowned Jewish painter who drew inspiration from the Bible and expressed his spiritual connection to it in a body of self-contained and highly integrated work, which was published under the title “62 Psaumes et versets de la Bible. ” When the Nazis entered Paris, Benn’s worst premonitions were realized. The drawings and the canvasses were critically acclaimed, and the artist was urged to make the works more accessible. In order to accommodate the demand for his biblically inspired work Benn agreed to have the sixty two drawings and paintings reproduced in the form of an album, which was published in 1960 under the title, “62 Psaumes et Versets de la Bible. ” The publication was issued in a limited edition of 2, 000 copies.

Hilmar Pabel (* 17. September 1910 in Rawitsch / Provinz Posen; - 6. KEYWORDS:germany

Near fine in a near fine dust price-clipped dust jacket with light rubbing to the extremities. The Birthday Party is the second full-length play by Harold Pinter and one of Pinter's best-known and most-frequently performed plays. Two sinister strangers, Goldberg and McCann, who arrive supposedly on his birthday and who appear to have come looking for him, turn Stanley's apparently innocuous birthday party organized by Meg into a nightmare.

File and staple holes at top, else very fine condition. Eisenhower appeals to his powerful allies at a Republican fundraiser to lobby Congress against proposed cuts in the "mutual security program". First introduced by Harry Truman in 1952, the program helped fund a wide variety of foreign aid projects, designed as a bulwark against communist expansion. Writing in the immediate aftermath of the downing of Francis Gary Powers' U2 spy plane over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960, Eisenhower worries that cuts by Congress to the foreign aid program would render "irreparable damage to our country".
