        Moments Preserved

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1960. First edition. Large quarto, original beige cloth, original pictorial slipcase. Inscribed, "For Alexander Irving Penn." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. Slipcase is in near fine condition with just a touch of wear. Roth 101, pp. 158-159; Hasselblad pp. 186-7. A very sharp copy. Irving Penn was an internationally known American photographer who became popular for his work in fashion photography. He worked at Vogue magazine, and he photographed for Issey Miayke and Clinique. His work serves as an example of excellent photography even today. Moments Preserved is his first publication. Irving Penn said befittingly of his work, "[s]ensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe" (1975). His photography is reverently held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both of which also hold collections of personal materials that relate to Penn's career.

My Wonderful World of Slapstick [*SIGNED*]

Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [spine slightly turned, front hinge unobtrusively reinforced by a professional paper conservator, otherwise just a bit shelfworn at the bottom extremities; jacket slightly toned at spine, small chip at top of spine, rear hinge split but professionally repaired, overall a clean and attractive example of this easily-worn jacket]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Buster Keaton on the verso of the half-title page (facing the title page). The inscription reads: "To Fritzie / My Queen, / From me, The King, / Buster." (The inscribee was actress Fritzi Burr, and the inscription is a reference to their joint appearance in the U.S. touring company of "Once Upon a Mattress" in 1960.) Billed as the "intimate autobiography" of the great comedian/filmmaker, it's one of those memoirs that manages to be both enchanting and infuriating, written as it was back in the day when many Hollywood autobiographies were unencumbered by such niceties as fact-checking. Still, as the personal testimony of one of the cinema's great artists, it more than deserves its inclusion in the noted bibliography "100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies." And to say that Buster Keaton inscriptions are uncommon is an understatement; although he was not illiterate -- a ridiculous notion floated by one of his less astute biographers -- he certainly was undereducated (he was being knocked about onstage by his father from the age of three, fer chrissake), and written documents of any sort in his hand are about as common as his on-screen smile. His art was brilliantly intuitive, and will endure for precisely that reason -- but a man of letters he was not. [Note that a cracked front hinge on this book has been unobtrusively repaired and reinforced by a professional paper conservator, and a similar repair performed on the rear hinge of the jacket.] Signed by Author .

        My Wonderful World Of Slapstick

New York: Doubleday, 1960. Later printing. Very good in a good dust jacket, with the jacket showing heavy wear, chipping, and the loss of the lower 1 1/2 inches of the jacket spine. This copy at least partially redeemed by Keaton's (scrawled) signature on the front free endpaper. From the library of the late actress June Havoc, with her bookplate. Although this particular example of Keaton's signature is not as precise as others, anecdotal evidence has it Keaton was rather inebriated when he signed this copy; and there is a personal connection between Havoc and Keaton, who were long-time personal accquaintences from their days on the vaudeville circuit. There are not many signed copies of this title.

Krönika (Chronique). Översättning av Herr Hammarskjöld / Originalet publicerat i Cahiers du Sud 46 (1959), s. 329-343.

[ENGLISH: Saint-John Perse: Krönika (Chronique). (Translation by Mr Hammarskjöld / Originally published in Cahiers du Sud 46 (1959), pp. 329-343.) Duplicated (not printed), A4 size, [1] + 11 pp. Stapled as issued. Provenance: Sten G. Lindberg, who has made an annotation in ink on first page to the effect that he had been entrusted by Uno Willers in August of 1960 with distributing this translation to the members of the Swedish Academy ("Sten G. Lindberg genom [Uno] Willers förmedling delaktig av en distribution inom Sv. Akademien 20.8.1960.") Together with a partly illegible handwritten note, apparently recording a telephone conversation with Dag Hammarsköld, who had called (Lindberg or Willers) during a pause in a session of the Security C - Klammerhft. Med påskrift av Sten G. Lindberg i bläck på första sidan: "Sten G. Lindberg genom [Uno] Willers förmedling delaktig av en distribution inom Sv. Akademien 20.8.1960." I stencilens rubrik daterad ‘New York, den 8 augusti 1960. Stencil i A4-format, [1] + 11 s.

Irving Penn: Moments Preserved (Lacking Slipcase)

Simon and Schuster, New York 1960 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Beige cloth-covered boards with title stamped in black on spine; with printed dust jacket; missing original slipcase. Photographs and text by Irving Penn. Introduction by Alexander Liberman. Captions and text collaboration by Rosemary Blackmon. Includes an index of plates. 184 pp., with 39 four-color plates and numerous black-and-white plates, finely printed in Switerland by Camera Publishers, C. J. Bucher, Ltd., Lucerne. 13 x 9-3/4 inches. CONDITION: Fine in Very Good dust jacket (1-inch closed tear at the top rear flap, moderate wear to the extremities, toning to the spine); missing slipcase. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001), and in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004).] From Vince Aletti: "Irving Penn's first book, Moments Preserved, is an overview of an astonishingly busy career -- one that began in earnest when he was hired by Alexander Liberman in 1943 to be the art director's assistant at Vogue.Penn spent a month in Lucerne, Switzerland, overseeing the printers at C. J. Bucher, who had produced Avedon's Observations the previous year. For Moments Preserved, they worked with gravure, letterpress, and offset processes on separate paper stocks and had casts of Condé Nast's original engraving plates flown in from New York for the book's color reproductions. When the first gravures didn't have the requisite depth, those pages went back to press and another image layer was laid on top of the originals. The book's first edition print run of 20,000 was divided into French, Italian, German, and English editions.Subtitled Eight Essays in Photographs and Words, Moments Preserved gathers Penn's vast variety of enthusiasms -- mostly for the vast variety of humanity -- and slots them into categories by nationality: the French, the Italians, the English, the Americans. Though most of the sections include fashion studies, still lifes, and impressionist scenes.they have in common the photographer's deftly understated portraits, printed here in the subtlest gravure. Penn reinvented the classic daylight studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance."
