Krönika (Chronique). Översättning av Herr Hammarskjöld / Originalet publicerat i Cahiers du Sud 46 (1959), s. 329-343.

[ENGLISH: Saint-John Perse: Krönika (Chronique). (Translation by Mr Hammarskjöld / Originally published in Cahiers du Sud 46 (1959), pp. 329-343.) Duplicated (not printed), A4 size, [1] + 11 pp. Stapled as issued. Provenance: Sten G. Lindberg, who has made an annotation in ink on first page to the effect that he had been entrusted by Uno Willers in August of 1960 with distributing this translation to the members of the Swedish Academy ("Sten G. Lindberg genom [Uno] Willers förmedling delaktig av en distribution inom Sv. Akademien 20.8.1960.") Together with a partly illegible handwritten note, apparently recording a telephone conversation with Dag Hammarsköld, who had called (Lindberg or Willers) during a pause in a session of the Security C - Klammerhft. Med påskrift av Sten G. Lindberg i bläck på första sidan: "Sten G. Lindberg genom [Uno] Willers förmedling delaktig av en distribution inom Sv. Akademien 20.8.1960." I stencilens rubrik daterad ‘New York, den 8 augusti 1960. Stencil i A4-format, [1] + 11 s.

Irving Penn: Moments Preserved (Lacking Slipcase)

Simon and Schuster, New York 1960 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Beige cloth-covered boards with title stamped in black on spine; with printed dust jacket; missing original slipcase. Photographs and text by Irving Penn. Introduction by Alexander Liberman. Captions and text collaboration by Rosemary Blackmon. Includes an index of plates. 184 pp., with 39 four-color plates and numerous black-and-white plates, finely printed in Switerland by Camera Publishers, C. J. Bucher, Ltd., Lucerne. 13 x 9-3/4 inches. CONDITION: Fine in Very Good dust jacket (1-inch closed tear at the top rear flap, moderate wear to the extremities, toning to the spine); missing slipcase. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001), and in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004).] From Vince Aletti: "Irving Penn's first book, Moments Preserved, is an overview of an astonishingly busy career -- one that began in earnest when he was hired by Alexander Liberman in 1943 to be the art director's assistant at Vogue.Penn spent a month in Lucerne, Switzerland, overseeing the printers at C. J. Bucher, who had produced Avedon's Observations the previous year. For Moments Preserved, they worked with gravure, letterpress, and offset processes on separate paper stocks and had casts of Condé Nast's original engraving plates flown in from New York for the book's color reproductions. When the first gravures didn't have the requisite depth, those pages went back to press and another image layer was laid on top of the originals. The book's first edition print run of 20,000 was divided into French, Italian, German, and English editions.Subtitled Eight Essays in Photographs and Words, Moments Preserved gathers Penn's vast variety of enthusiasms -- mostly for the vast variety of humanity -- and slots them into categories by nationality: the French, the Italians, the English, the Americans. Though most of the sections include fashion studies, still lifes, and impressionist scenes.they have in common the photographer's deftly understated portraits, printed here in the subtlest gravure. Penn reinvented the classic daylight studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance."         Excerpts from Visions of Cody.

(New York New Directions 1960) - One of 750 numbered copies signed by the author. Selections from Kerouac's lengthy character study of Neal Cassady, who appears here as the title character, Cody Pomeray. It was in On the Road that Kerouac first immortalized Cassady as the frenzied, charismatic Beat firgure Dean Moriarty. Their friendship was intense and mutually influential, even if the two more or less parted ways in the Sixties, when Cassady took up with the Merry Pranksters and became involved in the San Francisco psychedelic scene. Cassady has been credited with helping to transform Kerouac's writing from a traditional narrative style to the tumbling, "first thought best thought" mode for which he is so well known. Indeed, in the preface to this book, Kerouac comments that his intention was to write "an enormous paen which would unite my vision of America with words spilled out in the modern spontaneous method. Instead of just a horizontal account of travels on the road, I wanted a vertical, metaphysical study of Cody's character. . . ." Bound in cream boards backed in purple cloth, in original acetate wrapper. Very minor bump at top edge of upper board, small closed tears to acetate at spine head and foot, else a very fine copy. Publisher's announcement laid in. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Rivina canescens (Rivina humulus, Rouge Plant)

      - Rare watercolour on vellum, unsigned, attributed to Georg Ehret The distinctive lettering, wording, numbering and painted mount, as well as the exquisite handling of the botanical portrait itself indicate beyond reasonable doubt that this is the work of Georg Dionysius Ehret, the great 18th century German botanical artist, who lived and worked in England for the last 34 years of his life. This fine, accomplished watercolour drawing undoubtedly comes from his English years and is one of the rich trove of drawings that was collected in albums (hence the number in the lower right corner), and then later dispersed as the virtuoso aristocratic collectors of the era passed away. Created in a happy conjunction of scientific interest and aesthetic sensibility, Ehret's watercolours epitomize the hopeful and enlightened view of the period when it looked as though all the elements and workings of the world would soon be known and properly valued. Ehret's drawing of the Rouge plant exemplifies the characteristics that make his work so outstanding, which can be said to be simplicity itself, he was able to let the plant speak for itself, not as a specimen but as a particular plant who for the moment represents its species. The effect achieved is very close to musical, especially in this drawing. Calman, Ehret, Flower Painter Extraordinary. Bodycolour on vellum mounted on thin card with green painted frame, unsigned. Caption "Sp[ecies] Pl[antarum] p. 177 [by Linnaeus] Drawing numbered 134, lower right. Auction cutting of unknown date or auction house (though possibly Sotheby's, 1960's, 70's) on verso attributes the painting to Ehret.

Secker & Warburg, London 1960 - First English edition. Fine in just about fine dustwrapper with very slight toning on the spine, and with a long blurb by Dorothy Parker. Perhaps the author's most important novel, later dramatized by Edward Albee. Inscribed by the author to American composer Virgil Thomson: "For Virgil Thomson, with sincere wishes from James Purdy." Purdy's novel *Out with the Stars* (1992) features a central character, Abner Blossom, based upon and inspired by Virgil Thomson. In an autobiographical essay, Purdy stated that his book *Eustace Chisholm and the Works* "won the strong admiration of the noted composer Virgil Thomson, who had been following my career from the beginning and who was a special admirer of my novel *The Nephew*."       The Photographer, N.p. 1960 - Portfolio with 11 original b&w silver photographs, of varying sizes, including one folded, mounted to bifold art paper; includes a manuscript title page and colophon ( title page calligraphy in dark red crayon, colophon calligraphy in ink with the photographer's signature in dark red crayon). The colophon reads " Cette plaquette de ouze photographie de Lucien Clergue, consacrée aux gitans des Saintes Maries de la Mer et àSarah leur patronne a été tirée à 150 exemplaires par l'auteur. Ex no 115". All housed in a a plain black paper wrapper with "Gitans" in calligraphy in red crayon on the front wrapper. Near Fine. Lucien Clergue started his long career as a photographer following the street performers and Gypsies in the south of France. By 1960 he had already amassed a large body of work from the Camargue region, known is medieval times as a retreat for the Roma peoples, and specifically from its capital, Saintes Maries de la Mer. In this portfolio, at least one of the images dates from 1955 and is one of the photographer's signature early images. Although many of these images have been reproduced in later books and exhibitions, this portfolio is never mentioned in his bibliography or official chronology, therefore the date is inexact. In later years, Clergue devoted most of his photographic attention to the female nude, yet the images from this body of work show him to have been a master of the social documentary roving camera. OCLC locates only two copies, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and New York Public Library Research Library. [Attributes: First Edition]

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1960. 45pp. Printed by Enschedé en Zonen in Holland. Featuring a designer binding by the renowned English binder James Brockman. A church steeple, represented with an onlay of bright red morocco, is depicted on the spine of the book and serves as a lettering piece for the title. The steeple rises above a churchyard comprised of onlays of moss-green morocco, with the silhouettes of graves and crosses stamped in dark gray. The decoration is set against a background of deep violet morocco. Four rows of rose-shaped tooling, in various shades of gold leaf and palladium, suggest lines of poetry. The text of the book is accompanied by several full-page illustrations printed in green, along with a frontispiece portrait of the author. Brockman's work is in major public and private collections in England and the United States, including the Victoria and Albert Museum. He first apprenticed as a gold finisher, ascending to Sydney Cockerell's assistant for five years and later working with another master binder, Ivor Robinson. Brockman is a leader in innovative binding design and former president of the Designer Bookbinders. Housed in a violet buckram box lined with purple velvet, gilt-titled to spine. A.e.g. (2 3/8 by 1 5/8; 61x42mm).

A small crease on the front wrap, a little soiling, a pleasing, very good copy in a cloth clamshell case with leather spine label.         COBOL: Initial specifications for a COmmon Business Oriented Language

Superintendent Of Documents Government Printing Off, Washington, D.c. 1960 - FIRST EDITION of the first report on COBOL, the first computer programming language designed to run on all computers, regardless of make or model. With over a hundred pages of extremely rare related material. s computer use began to grow throughout the 1950's, there was rapidly developing a need for a programming language that was not computer-specific. As outlined in the introduction of this seminal report: "On May 28 and 29, 1959, a meeting was called in the Pentagon for the purpose of considering both the desireablility and the feasibility of establishing a common language for the programming of electronic computers in business-type data processing. Representatives from users, Government installations, computer manufacturers and other interested parties were present. There was almost unanimous agreement that the project was both desirable and feasible at this time. The concept of three committees or task forces was agreed upon. The Committee held meetings between September 18 and November 7, 1959, and proceeded steadily in its task of resolving problems and completing the language. The name 'COBOL', which suggests a COmmon Business Oriented Language, was adopted. Final editing and initial distribution of the report to the Executive Committee was accomplished December 17, 1959." The COBOL report is contained in a three-ring binder with Remington Rand UNIVAC labels on front and spine that includes a massive amount of material presumably distributed to individuals attending the "Remington Rand UNIVAC Computer Seminar for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations" from December 5th to 9th, 1960 (as noted on general title page for binder). The binder is divided into seven sections labeled: Computer Fundamentals; System Fundamentals; Design App. of Advanced System; System Simulation and Games; System Languages; Plan Imp. of Computer Sys; and Examp. of Adv. Sys. Equipment. Among the approximately 30 printed and mimeographed items are texts of lectures, biographies of the participants, and various Remington Rand UNIVAC publications. Washington, D.C.: Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, 1960. Quarto, original blue printed wrappers. Contained in a three-ring binder (with corresponding three punch holes for COBOL article) with extensive amount of related material. Housed in custom cloth box. Binder with portion of label rubbed off; generally fine condition throughout. The COBOL report itself is scarce; with all the associated material, the collection provides a possibly unique opportunity to acquire material that thoroughly documents a critical moment in the history of the computer.         Pair of Framed Manuscript Leaves: German Breviary.

(Typed indentification slip on back of one frame reads: Breviary (MSS.) Old German, early 15th Century). - Size of frames: 8 1/2" x 10"; approx. size of framed vellum leaves: 3 14" x 4 1/8". The first leaf features a large initial M in blue & heading & highlighting of capitals in red; 12 lines in brown ink. Second framed leaf (not shown in scan) is 13 lines in brown ink with similar red titling & highlighting. Both are matted in a gold-surfaced wooden, glass-fronted frame, with beaded border; with brown backing paper & typed label (on St. Michael leaf), & hanging wire on back of both; most likely framed in the 1960's. Backings show a stain from dealer's/framer's labels (?) which were removed, some wear to brown paper backing; else, frames & leaves are in fine condition. Leaves in the Germanic languages are much rarer than Latin text leaves. Leaf number one, features the beginning of a prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel; leaf two concludes this, or another similar prayer & begins another prayer "To All The Angels". Cannot guarantee that the identification on the typed slip is correct, but the leaves are genuine hand written leaves on vellum, in a Germanic language & could easily have been produced in the 15th century. Sold as a framed pair only. Weight: 2 lbs.
