The Tiller - Official Publication of the Curved Dash Owners Club

Privately Printed, Not Stated - Unpaginated (56 pages) with a hard glossy soft cover bound into a dark blue hard cover with gold-like lettering. The 1st Edition of (the) Official Publication of the Curved Dash Owners Club. No date stated (around 1960). No publisher or place stated. From Dedication Page: 'Dedicated to - Ransom E. Olds - Inventor of the curved dash runabout, which presently is the object of our affections. One of the few successful pioneers in getting America out of the mud and onto wheels. (Also Dedicated to) George C. Green - Like Mr. Olds, a perfectionist and an advocate of the Golden Rule. George's much desired restorations provide the best evidence of his mechanical ability and have set a standard of perfection that few equal and none surpass'. Three-quarters page photograph of George C. Green signed by him under photograph in blue ink. Four and a half page 'Curved Dash Olds News', (George C. Green, President) dated January, 1965, No.9, laid in book. From Editor's Comments: ' My first objective was to make this a factual source of information, which the members of the club would value highly. Our readers will note that I have divided the text in this order - (1) Photos, etc., of Mr. Olds [brief biography]; (2) Reproductions of original documents and Mr. Hulse's letter. In this section I have included pictures of some of the men who helped establish the car's reputation and the impossible roads that were common for that day. Some photos of the factory are included. The advertising department's efforts to introduce the car's qualities to feminine drivers is evident, and the Company's early efforts to establish its reputation on the track is represented by the picture of H.G. Thomas in the Olds "Pirate"; (3) This section is devoted to Mr. and Mrs. Green, showing them in their ever faithful 1904 olds, which he acquired in 1907. The fact that it has been driven over 100,000 miles, assures us that our little cars will be here when we no longer have a need for them. This section also covers club activities to date and the most important part of the issue "Georges technical notes" and other information of interest to owners. In my efforts to collect historical data, I had the good fortune to correspond with Mr. Theodore E. Barthel, one of the company's first bookkeepers - who provided me with a copy of an invoice representing the first carload shipment of automobiles that was ever made, and other documents of equal interest. We all realize that time will not permit George to restore all of the cars awaiting his attention, and it is hoped that the club and the subsequent issues of "The Tiller" will provide the means of preserving for posterity the curved dash car, and some of George's experience, ability and restorative handwork. When he (George) expressed a desire to organize we owners into a club, to encourage the restoration and preservation of the little cars, he found no objectors and the C.D.O.C. was born at Hershey, Penna., in 1956 with 25 charter members'. Contents also include: Song lyrics - "In My Merry Oldsmobile" (written by Gus Edwards); Highlights of Oldsmobile's History [first Oldsmobile built Aug 21, 1897, Lansing, by 2 employees]; First Oldsmobile automotive plant [Olds Motor Works, 1899], Letter to N.O. Geisinger ("Geis") from Charles E. Hulse, Sept. 1, 1959, outlining the history of production; Identification Features [1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906 models]; Photos; Poem - "They Came To Take The Tour" by Robert C. Beattie; George C. Green's 'Restoration Tips' [Front Axle and Wheels, Rear Axle and Wheels, Motors, Miscellaneous]; Poem - "How Come So New" by Beattie; Record of Club Events; Letters sent to editor regarding the Curved Dash Oldsmobile; "An Oldster's Wish" N.O. (Nelson O. Geisinger). INCLUDES 'Printers Proof' of first edition. Inscribed by N.O. Geisinger's daughter-in-law to editor "Merry Christmas -1960". Rare. Inventory #19-001147-2017.         Poems [Signed and with a short notation in Greek]

Atlantic Monthly Press [Little, Brown and Company], Boston 1960 - A Very Good copy of the First American Edition, first printing (light handling soil and some tiny spots to boards, a few spots to the rear board, board corners bumped, some foxing to the closed page block's top edge), in a Near Fine dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, quite light edge wear, tiny chipping at spine ends and corners, small rub at lower portion of the front panel near the flap turn, expected age toning to the rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page where he also has made a notation in Greek. Containing 127 pages, the book presents the first comprehensive collection of Seferis' Poetry published in the United States. While some of the verses selected for this book previously appeared in the 1948 translation of "The King of Asine", the balance of them appear here in English for the first time. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good copy of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. A QUITE SCARCE COPY SIGNED AND WITH A SHORT NOTATION BY GEORGE SEFERIS. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

MacGibbon & Kee, London 1960 - First British edition of the author's most well known work. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by the author. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp copy. "If only I could get rid of this dead weight Immediately I felt ashamed of myself, ashamed forever " wrote Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel in reference to his dying father. Night relays Wiesel's experience as a prisoner in the concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald in 1944-1945. Wiesel witnessed the inversion of convention and destruction of values. He writes, "here there are no fathers, no brothers, no friends everyone lives and dies for himself alone." "To the best of my knowledge no one has left behind him so moving a record" (Alfred Kazin).
