        To Kill a Mockingbird

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1960. First edition. Very Good +/Good. A relatively clean Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the book. No previous ownership markings, but a few light finger smudges on the early pages. In a restored, price-clipped dust jacket that we grade as Good only. First issue jacket, without later printing notification on the front flap, Capote quote in green font and Jonathan Daniels quote on the rear flap. Restoration to large chips at the spine ends affecting some of the green lettering, and some dampstaining to jacket, visible from the verso. In all a copy that is well below average, but priced to reflect it. Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning coming of age novel, set in Maycomb, Alabama. An American classic, the novel took over two years for Lee to write- it was inspired by her own upbringing. (In fact, Lee's father was a lawyer who had defended black clients at the cost of his practice). Its production was not without difficulty and Lee once became so angry over the course of writing the novel that she tossed the manuscript out a window. The book has never been out of print, sold tens of millions of copies, and is required reading for the American adolescent. To Kill a Mockingbird was also adapted by Horton Foote into a 1963 film, directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck. The film would win three Oscars. "...skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious." (Contemporary New Yorker review). Very Good + in Good. dust jacket.

        Kuthan's Menagerie Completed

Vancouver, British Columbia:: Nevermore Press & Heavenly Monkey Press,, 1960 & 2003.. Edition of 50. Heavenly Monkey Press: "Kuthan's Menagerie of Interesting Zoo Animals was published in 1960 from the private press of Robert and Felicity Reid (under the imprint Nevermore Press). It has since become famous in the history of fine printing in Canada, not just for Kuthan's exquisite multi-color linocuts of animals, but also for the fact that only 60 of the edition's 130 copies were ever bound; the balance remained in the bindery, eventually forgotten but luckily, not lost. Heavenly Monkey has completed the book's issue. Kuthan's Menagerie measures 9.75 x 13 inches. The paper is Golden Hind, a laid sheet, printed one side only and folded. Reid explains this both helped solve a problem with see-through and bulk up the book (which consists of 13 sheets forming 26 pages, from half title to colophon). The pages were printed landscape, and the sheets bound along the open edge. The unbound copies were purchased from the original binder's estate by Vancouver booksellers Stephen Lunsford and William Hoffer, in the late '80s; all of the 50 complete copies remaining have now been issued through Heavenly Monkey. Rather than attempt to recreate the original binding, the remaining copies were issued in the livre d'artiste manner - loose, with a new wrap and custom-made clamshell box. Kuthan's Menagerie Completed feature a new title page; the two-page preface by Robert R. Reid, the original publisher; and an additional colophon, all printed at Heavenly Monkey in 18-point Perpetua on the same Golden Hind paper used in the original book. The original sheets are surrounded by an inner wrap of the yellow Japanese paper used for endsheets in the copies bound in 1960. All of the sheets are held in an outer wrap of handmade St Armand paper. The colophon is numbered (50 copies) and signed by Robert Reid. (Please note these copies do not bear George Kuthan's signature. The copies issued in 1960 were numbered and signed after being bound.) The clamshell box, made by Simone Mynen, is covered in red Japanese fabric with decorative printed labels debossed on the front and spine." This is copy 3 of 50, signed and verified by Robert Reid.

Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Child Rearing

New York: Hart Publishing Company. (1960). First. First edition. Foreword by Erich Fromm. Lacks the promotional pamphlet. Slight sunning at the base of the spine, else fine, bound in two color cloth, in a slightly worn, very good plus first issue dustwrapper with tiny nicks and tears (we have also seen copies of the first edition in slightly later jackets). Publisher Harold Hart approached Neill to write about his controversial school, and together compiled this book from Neill's other works, which became the number one non-fiction bestseller in the U.S. The effect of the book helped to promulgate Neill's educational theories, as well as reviving the flagging attendance at the long-running experimental school that he had founded in 1921 in Germany in conjunction with the Neue Schule, and then moved to England in 1923. Uncommon. .

        The strategy of conflict

Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1960. "Game Theory as a Unifying Framework for the Social Sciences"--Presentation Copy of Schelling's Nobel Prize-Winning WorkSchelling, Thomas C. (1921- ). The strategy of conflict. vii, [3], 309pp. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1960. 210 x 137 mm. Original cloth, dust-jacket (slightly chipped at head and foot). Very good copy, inscribed by Schelling to British economist Thomas Balogh (1905-85) on the front endpaper: "To Thomas Balogh to whom, if he will read this, I am even further indebted. Tom Schelling." Laid in is Schelling's signed autograph note to Balogh: "I thought that if I gave you the book, rather than lent it, I'd oblige you to read more of it. Tom."First Edition of Schelling's most famous book, a study of bargaining and strategic behavior which pioneered the application of game theory to economics, business, warfare and other real-world situations. The Strategy of Conflict is considered one of the hundred books most influential in the West since 1945. The book introduced the concept of the "Schelling point" (also known as the focal point), defined as a point-physical or mental-that people will tend to converge on in the absence of communication, because it seems natural, special or relevant to them. In 2005 Schelling was awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in economics for his groundbreaking work in this field."Against the backdrop of the nuclear arms race in the late 1950s, Thomas Schelling's book The Strategy of Conflict set forth his vision of game theory as a unifying framework for the social sciences. Schelling showed that a party can strengthen its position by overtly worsening its own options, that the capability to retaliate can be more useful than the ability to resist an attack, and that uncertain retaliation is more credible and more efficient than certain retaliation. These insights have proven to be of great relevance for conflict resolution and efforts to avoid war."Schelling's work prompted new developments in game theory and accelerated its use and application throughout the social sciences. Notably, his analysis of strategic commitments has explained a wide range of phenomena, from the competitive strategies of firms to the delegation of political decision power" (Nobelprize.org). Schelling presented this copy of his book to Thomas Balogh (Lord Balogh), a Hungarian-born economist who moved to England in the 1930s and taught for many years at Balliol College, Oxford and at the London School of Economics. In 1964 he was made Economic Advisor to the British Cabinet, and in 1968 he received a life peerage. He served as Britain's Minister of State for Energy from 1974 to 1977.         Shopping for Meat in Winter" - Original Manuscript Poem signed

[New York]. Original Manuscript poem by the American poet Oscar Williams of one of his most famous poems, "Shopping for Meat in Winter". The poem is written on a piece of large quarto sized blank paper with a 'Macadam Bond' watermark, the three stanzas filling the sheet, with Williams' signature at the foot of the page.. [New York], no year (c.1960). 21,7 cm x 28 cm. Folded in center. Minor remains of a rusty paperclip (only visible at the backside of the paper). Original Manuscript poem by the American poet Oscar Williams of one of his most famous poems, "Shopping for Meat in Winter". The poem is written on a piece of large quarto sized blank paper with a 'Macadam Bond' watermark, the three stanzas filling the sheet, with Williams' signature at the foot of the page. Oscar Williams was the pen name of Oscar Kaplan (December 29, 1900 ?- October 10, 1964), an American anthologist and poet. Williams was born Oscar Kaplan in Letychiv, Ukraine, son of Jewish parents Mouzya Kaplan and Chana Rapoport. He immigrated to New York at the age of seven. His first book, Golden Darkness, was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Prize. Among his influential anthologies are Master Poems of the English Language, Immortal Poems of the English Language, The Pocket Book of Modern Verse, and the Little Treasury Poetry Series, which were used in colleges and high schools around the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s. During his lifetime, anthologies he edited sold more than two million copies, a nearly unheard amount for books of poetry. Many of his anthologies are still being republished today. Though a friend and promoter of poets like Dylan Thomas and George Barker, Williams' own poetry is not highly regarded by critics, though he published several volumes during his lifetime, and is not nearly as accomplished as the poetry of his wife, Gene Derwood (1909?-1954). Among Williams' poems are "Revenge," "Poem," "Poet," "The Last Supper" and "I Sing an Old Song," "The City's Face". Shopping for Meat in Winter is a typical Williams poem, with its urban theme, forced rhyme, and attempts at replicating the neo-Romanticism of the New Apocalypse. Shopping for Meat in Winter What lewd, naked and revolting shape is this? A frozen oxtail in the butcher's shop Long and lifeless upon the huge block of wood On which the ogre's axe begins chop chop. The sun like incense fumes on the smoky glass, The street frets with people, the winter wind Throws knives, prices dangle from shoppers' mouths While the grim vegetables, on parade, bring to mind The great countryside bathed in golden sleep, The trees, the bees, the soft peace everywhere-- I think of the cow's tail, how all summer long It beat the shapes of harps into the air. Oscar Williams and his poet-artist wife Gene Derwood sponsored an annual $15,000 poetry award which bears their name. They lived in a penthouse of an office building on Water Street. In his later years, Oscar Williams' home near Wall Street in Manhattan served as a mecca for young poets. Asked how he chose the poems used in his anthologies, he said, "How do you pick one girl to marry? In poetry it's divine polygamy. Generally, when a poem stays with me a long time that poem delivers the goods". Throughout his life, Oscar Williams eschewed his Jewish background. He was always mysterious about his origins and was buried by an Episcopal Church. He was survived by a son, Strephon Kaplan-Williams, who was raised in boarding schools and hardly ever interacted with his parents. His papers are housed at the Indiana University Lilly Library. (Folio) 17½x14, original cloth-backed boards, upper covers each with an additional silkscreen print; plastic jackets. Each volume is signed by both author and artist. From a total edition of 225. Housed together in a cloth slipcase. Stunning and important editions from the foremost of the New York School poets. The abstract expressionist artwork was produced in close collaboration with the poets and the prints were pulled directly by the artists at Tiber Press. Salute is Schuyler's first appearance in book form. Although the colophon gives the limitation as 225, the books seem to be considerably more rare.

Uncommon. .

        Gangs and Counter-gangs

London: Barrie and Rockliff, 1960. 211 p. First edition, first printing. Near fine condition hardcover in Good+ dust jacket. Clean pages. Not ex-library! Foxing to top edge, light shelf wear. Jacket spine panel faded, missing little chips at head and tail, small tear and crease to top of front panel, price intact. Quite scarce in the original jacket. Major (now General) Frank Kitson's account of counterinsurgency campaigns in Kenya is a classic of modern military strategy. It's often popularly referenced for its advocacy of "false flag" tactics: "counter-" and "pseudo-" gangs, etc.
