        Robert Morley

      c. 1960. Sheet size: 178 × 208 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper, with plastic overlay for Morley's tie. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

[.]" (a. d. Br. v. 3. IV. 1956). Typescript for the Preface to God is My Life: the Story of Our Lady at Gethsemani

[c. 1960]. In 1960, photographer Shirley Burden, who had shot the cover photo for Merton's Selected Poems in 1959, published God is My Life, a photographic study of the Abbey of Gethsemani, where Merton lived. Merton provided this preface, which is far more an extrapolation of the lessons he derived from the book than a mere introduction: "Places, like persons, lose the sense of their own identity. They tend to fabricate for themselves a character, and it is with this unconscious substitute for reality that they go out to meet other men...What a lesson is in this simple fact: Our partial, fabricated self: the self that wants to be at the same time angelic and up to date, is pitifully imaginary...." Four pages, with Merton's holograph corrections, beginning with changing the title to "Preface" from his initial, descriptive title, "A Question of Identity." Four other instances of word changes and a few corrections of spacing, punctuation, or typos. The Christogram "jhs" appears on the first page. Three-holed paper; folded in thirds; near fine. By the following year (if not sooner), Merton had himself taken to photographing the Abbey. Manuscript material by Merton is extremely uncommon in the market, and this is an especially rich example as he reflects on the meaning and beauty of the monastery where he had been living for nearly two decades at that point, so long that until he saw Burden's photographs he no longer even saw the Abbey or recognized its beauty.

        Seven Letters

1960-1968. A collection of early correspondence from Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter to noted British theatre director James Roose-Evans. The letters consist of four TLS, two ALS and one TPcS, dated between 1960-1968 and all boldly signed, "Harold." All but the postcard are folded from mailing with scattered light wear, overall near fine. Also laid in is a program for, Two Plays by Harold Pinter: The Dumb Waiter and The Room. Roose-Evans directed the debut performance of Pinter's The Dumb Waiter as part of a double bill with The Room on March 8, 1960 at The Hampstead Theatre Club, which he had founded the previous year. He and Pinter remained friends after the production and these letters correspond with Pinter's early success and growing popularity. They are light and collegial, with several references to Pinter's breakout play, The Caretaker, which, according to one letter, Roose-Evans was one of the first to read. A charming collection of early letters from one of the most important playwrights of the 20th Century at the start of his career. Further details available upon request. .
