Hardcover: dust wrapper slightly torn at head of crown but overall IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, suitable for exhibition. Softcover: spine creased, with minor cracking but AN ATTRACTIVE COPY, suitable for exhibition. Two volumes, octavo. xxiii, 454 pages (hardcover); xxiii, 454 pages (softcover) Two significant copies of one of the most important anthologies of American poetry ever published. * Ad 1: First edition (Softcover issue), THIS COPY SIGNED BY NINE CONTRIBUTORS: ALLEN GINSBERG, JOHN ASHBERY, LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI, ROBERT CREELEY, KENNETH KOCH, MICHAEL McCLURE, JONATHAN WILLIAMS, GARY SNYDER, AND PHILIP WHALEN. * Ad 2: First edition (Hardcover issue), a rare copy SIGNED BY DONALD ALLEN, the compiler and editor, with an unpublished letter by Allen (photocopy) concerning the publication history of this Anthology and the royalties that each poet received. * "There was no more significant poetry anthology in the second half of the twentieth-century than THE NEW AMERICAN POETRY 1945-1960, edited by Donald M. Allen and published by the Grove Press in 1960. Poised at almost mid-century, it provides a summing up of a very particular situation in poetry as it looks back to the achievements of the 1950s and ahead to the possibilities of the 60s. The goal, according to Allen, was to present one common characteristic: a total rejection of all those qualities typical of academic verse. Allen's anthology was prophetic in another way. It assigned poets to large overall groupings that have persisted for nearly forty years and have entered the critical nomenclature: Black Mountain, San Francisco Renaissance, Beat Generation, and New York Poets - as well as identifying a group of younger poets 'who have been associated with and in some cases influenced by the leading writers of the preceding groups' (p. xiii). When the Allen anthology came out, several of the featured poets had barely been published" (source: 'A Secret Location on the Lower East Side: Adventures in Writing, 1960-1980,' NYPL and Granary Books). * Allen's compilation, with its appended statements on poetry by various literary luminaries, served to define the canon for two generations of readers, scholars, and critics. Olson, Duncan, Ginsberg, Kerouac, Everson / Antoninus, Blackburn, O'Hara... the list goes on and on. Allen introduced countless thousands to new voices, and deepened appreciation for yet others. * The fascinating letter by Allen is dated 10 April 1998 and reads: "The contract I'd signed with Grove Press gave me an advance of only $1,000.00 which did not provide much of a payment to the 44 poets. Robert Duncan had more faith in the success of the anthology and wanted much more. After talking with Denise Levertov about how New Directions paid contributors to their Annuals by pro-rating the royalties earned, I decided to pro-rate two-thirds of the royalties earned annually by THE NEW AMERICAN POETRY to the poets at a rate of so much per page of poetry. And continued pro-rating the royalties until the book went out of print in 1980 and was superseded by THE POSTMODERNS, co-edited with George Butterick." Interestingly, one page of the Ginsberg section (p. 181) is marked up in red pencil, as if it was to be omitted in a reading or later edition. * AN IMPORTANT SET OF BOTH ISSUES OF THE FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY NINE POETS AND THE COMPILER / EDITOR.

Seler?s life and work as well as a full bibliography of his writings. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 69 1/2") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with blue lettering to spine and covers, pictorial of codex on front covers in brown. Second edition after the 1903-1923 first edition.Eduard Georg Seler (December 5, 1849 ?" November 23, 1922) was a prominent German anthropologist, ethnohistorian, linguist, epigrapher, academic and Americanist scholar, who made extensive contributions in these fields towards the study of pre-Columbian era cultures in the Americas. He is most renowned for his foundational studies concerning the ethnography, documents and history of Mesoamerican cultures, for which he is regarded as one of the most influential Mesoamericanist scholars active around the turn of the 20th century. Being poor and of ailing health, he was helped and supported for decades by his wife Cäcilie (Cecilia) Seler-Sachs (1855?"1935, financially, she was the daughter of Dr Sachs, a wealthy MD), physically (during their long, hard, and insecure travels), and intellectually. Her photos of Aztec temples and pyramids are still useful to scientists, and after her husband's death she went on verifying his works, and publishing them. On the spot, the Selers were helped by Mexican scholar and historian Antonio Peñafiel.A few general observations on the contents of Gesammelte Abhandlungen are in order. Altogether, the set includes 127 separate articles. Most were originally published in such well-known outlets of the 1887-1919 period as ZeitschriJt jilr Ethnologie, Globus, Science, Internationales Archiv filr Ethnographie, Ethnologisches Notisblatt, Mittheilungen der Anthropologischen Gesellschajt in Wien, Verojentlichungen aus dem Kdniglichen Museum filr Volkerkunde (Berlin), and the proceedings of the various International Congresses of Americanists held during these years. Occasionally these articles, on being reprinted in the various volumes of Gesammelte Abhundlungen, were substantially enlarged and revised by their author. A few of the most important papers were written especially for these volumes, such as his well-known translations (with copious notes) of the Sahaguntine chants to the gods (Vol. I), his classic account of Tarascan culture at Contact (Vol. III), and his important descriptions of the ruins of La Quemada (Vol. III) and Teotihuacan (Vol. V). Breaking them down into categories, to illustrate again the great breadth of Seler?s scholarly labors, approximately 10 are devoted to studies of the Mexican codices, 3 to Mexican calendrics, 20 to Maya hieroglyphic writing and calendrics, 3 to mythology, 2 to general Mesoamerican linguistics, 29 to analyses of archaeological objects or groups of objects, 13 to descriptions (always well illustrated) of major ruins, 6 to accounts of archaeological travels, 14 to what might be called "general ethnohistory," 4 to direct translations of Nahuatl texts, 3 to recent ethnography, 3 to Conquest history, I to geography, and 4 on miscellaneous topics. In addition to this coverage of Mesoamerican matters, which consumes the vast bulk of the volumes, 4 articles deal with North America, 3 with Central America, and 5 with South America (Andean region). The small number of articles specifically concerned with Mexican codices does not accurately reflect Seler?s contribution to this field, since, as stated above, his major works here were long monographs, each thoroughly analyzing a major surviving specimen. (American Anthropologist Volume 65: p1100)Condition:Some occasional light pencil notations else a very good to fine set.
