[Photo Album]: New England Family featuring Boy Scouts and the Portland to Montreal Pipeline

Maine, 1960. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 12". String-tied black cloth over paper boards with gilt decorations. Contains 208 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and 3 later color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Photo album is very good with detached but present pages, small tears, and spotting with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a New England family between 1902 and 1960. The album details a variety of family events including trips and vacations. The album is not in chronological order and begins with photos of a Boy Scout Troop from Dracut, Massachusetts between 1923 and 1924. These photos show the troop in group photos during their "1st Overnight Hike" in New Hampshire. The boys are seen cooking, starting fires, and hiking in candid snapshots. The next section documents a trip to Quebec in 1902 with photos of Montmorency Falls and the Quebec Zoo. In 1919 the family who kept the album bought a home in Dracut, Massachusetts. The photos document the changes they made to the house, including the addition of a sun porch, and the changing of seasons. One caption reads, "several large Baldwin apple trees in full bloom added to the beauty of the spring." The album shows the beauty of the New England landscape with photos of waterfalls, rock faces, and beaches as well as working on the family farm. One section of six photos shows the welding of the Portland to Montreal pipeline in 1941. The pipeline began as a response to the oil shortages Canada was facing in World War II. The decision was made to take crude oil from Portland, Maine to Montreal with a pipeline which measured approximately 236 miles. The photos here show the construction of the pipeline, digging ditches, laying pipe, and welding. One photo shows the joining of the pipe at "the line," the border between the U.S. and Canada. Another photo shows an aerial view of the pipe "looking North."The later part of the album is a collection of travel and family photos through the 1960s. Many of the photos are taken in the 1940s depicting picnics, campsites, and road travel, including a section of photos from a camping trip to Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, in September of 1942. These photos show people hiking up the Dudley Trail featuring snapshots of the Knife Edge peak and Chimney Pond. Later in the album the family visit Keene, New Hampshire and New York as well. The New York photos show Radio City's ice rink, Grant's tomb, and the library at Columbia, among other tourist sites. A few of the photos are in color from the 1960s and show an older couple posing together. An extensive New England family album featuring boy scouts and the homefront during World War II.

The original stencil, guide sheet, and plate suite included at the rear of this deluxe copy is the final plate for Blake's "Memorable Fancy", in which, Blake having boldly confounded a judging Angel by imposing his own counter-fantasy upon it, the Angel complains "Thy phantasy has imposed upon me & thou oughtest to be ashamed", to which Blake answers, "We impose on one another, & it is but lost time to converse with you whose works are only Analytics".         Botteghe Oscure.

Rome: [De Luca Editore], 1948-1960 - 25 volumes, octavo. Original printed buff wrappers. 8 volumes (IX-XVI) with wraparound bands; 9 volumes (XVII-XXV) with dust jackets. A few unopened volumes. Wrappers and jackets slightly toned with lightly creased and nicked extremities, text blocks lightly toned. An excellent set. Complete collection of the semi-annual literary journal Botteghe Oscure, with the 1949 Rome issue of Volume I (Volume I was first published in 1948 in Naples). Founded by Marguerite Caetani in Rome in 1948 and named after the street on which the editorial office was located, Botteghe Oscure was an explicitly international literary magazine, both in scope and distribution. "In twelve years it published writers from thirty countries in five languages: English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish. Most contributions appeared in the original, with no translation; the only exceptions were made for texts written in less common languages like Greek, Korean, or Dutch, which were translated into English Caetani wanted to create something different from the publications that populated the Italian literary scene in the 1940s, which she described as 'historical, critical, political, dry as dust' in a letter to her half sister, poet Katherine Biddle" (Lucamante, Elsa Morante's Politics of Writing, p.106). Caetani, together with Giorgio Bassani, her one constant collaborator and editor for the Italian section of the magazine, sought to support both established and unknown authors and published contributions by the likes of W. H. Auden, André Frénaud, Giuseppe di Lampedusa, Guglielmo Petroni, Nelly Sachs, Edith Sitwell, Dylan Thomas, and William Carlos Williams, among others. [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Leopard

London: Collins and Harvill Press,, 1960. Translated from the Ialian by Archibald Colquhoun. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine very slightly rolled, very occasional foxing internally, slight spotting to edges. Otherwise, a fine copy in the bright jacket, head of spine very so slightly creased, short closed tear to base of spine. First edition in English, first printing. First printed in 1958 in Italian, The Leopard or Il Gattopardo became the best-selling novel in Italian history. Lampedusa failed to get his brilliant tragicomic satire of Sicilian aristocratic life during the Risorgimento published in his lifetime, and when it was published it was immediately attacked from both the Right, for his portrayal of aristocratic lassitude and decadence, and the Left, for his ruthless send-up of the Italian unification and his depiction of the Sicilian proletariat.

The Hildebrand Rarity; On Her Majesty's Secret Service; The Property of a Lady; You Only Live Twice; The Man with the Golden Gun; Octopussy

Chicago: Playboy, 1960. THE COMPLETE COLLECTION OF IAN FLEMING'S JAMES BOND WORKS IN PLAYBOY MAGAZINE; appearing simultaneously or near-simultaneously with the first book editions. "James Bond and Playboy magazine have had a long history together. It started in 1960 when the magazine negotiated rights to first publish Ian Fleming's new 007 short story 'The Hildebrand Rarity' in its March 1960 issue. Illustrated by Allan Phillips, for many Americans it was their first introduction to James Bond. The story would be published a month later in the short story collection 'For Your Eyes Only' in April 1960..."It was not for another three years in April 1963, when the first James Bond film 'Dr. No' was about to open in America, did Playboy return to Ian Fleming's creation. In the meantime, Bond on the page had become popularized by President John F. Kennedy. When the hardback first edition of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' went on sale in the UK, Playboy serialized the novel for American audiences over the April, May and June 1963 issues. The novel was later published by New American Library in August that year."In 1964, Playboy capitalized on the growing Bond fever. "The January issue published the short story 'The Property of a Lady,' which Fleming had written in 1963 as a commission by Sotheby's (it was later released in the collection 'Octopussy and The Living Daylights' in 1966). Fleming's penultimate full-length novel, 'You Only Live Twice', was syndicated over three issues in April, May, and June 1964. Fleming died in August."1965 saw the syndication of Fleming's final novel 'The Man with the Golden Gun' over its April, May, June, and July issues. It was published in the US in hardback a month later... Playboy's publication of Ian Fleming writing came to a close in 1966 with the syndication of his final short story 'Octopussy' in the March and April issues" (from MI6: The Home of James Bond).Chicago: Playboy, 1960-1966. 14 issues in original wrappers; housed in two beautiful custom boxes by noted book artist Sjoerd Hofstra.       Eureka, CA: Hearse Press, [1960]. First Edition. Slim octavo (21cm); illustrated card wrappers, stapled; [28]pp. Lengthily inscribed by the author on verso of front wrapper: "Dear Reader - E.V. Griffith brought out this first collection of my poetry. As a first collection, long out of print, it might bring you $ or you might hide it under your shirt. It brought me stumbling into the poetry world after a solid 10 year drunk + hospitalization and near death. I have continued to drink and write, and, as you know, I will die. Charles Bukowski." Beneath his inscription, Bukowski has drawn a small self-portrait, and has added a drawing of a potted flower in yellow paint beneath his name on the title page. Pinpoint wear to upper corners, else Fine. A superb copy of the author's first book, produced after numerous delays by early advocate and Hearse Press publisher E.V. Griffith. A lengthy, early, and humorous inscription written not quite as late as the 1970's (when Bukowski produced a small "Author's Edition" out of leftover copies), but likely around the time his literary reputation had just begun to take off.         Production of commodities by means of commodities.

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,, 1960. Prelude to a critique of economic theory. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. With the dust jacket, clipped. Foot of spine slightly faded, top edge of text block a little spotted, otherwise a bright, clean copy in the sunned and spotted dust jacket with some nicks and tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression, of Sraffa's "classic in capital theory", his critique of the orthodox theory of value and distribution which laid the groundwork for the revival of classical and Marxian approaches. "Production of Commodities is a peculiarly sparse book. The argument has been pared to the absolute minimum to sustain the propositions which Sraffa wishes to advance. Yet, the precision and logical elegance of the argument are 'the work of an artist working in the medium of economic theory' (P. Newman) … Did any scholar have so great an impact on economic science as Piero Sraffa did in so few writings?" (The New Palgrave IV, p. 450; 460).
