[Archive of Traced and Collaged Pornographic Pencil Sketches and Drawings Detailing One Man's Sexual History and Fantasies]

[Washington D.C.], [ca. 1960-1990]. Very good. Four matching numbered three ring binders, with several additional binders and manila envelopes of supporting materials, drafts, xeroxed duplicates etc. Various media, most pencil on typing or tracing paper, some collage. Hundreds of pages in all. Very good with occasional dried (presumed) ejaculatory material to some pages (perhaps a dozen or so, posing small conservational issues relative to the size of the archive). A personally-tailored series of pornographic fantasies that portrays all of the women with whom the artist had been sexually involved (whether in reality or – it seems - in his imagination) throughout his life. Arranged chronologically and with a table of contents detailing the biographical and sexual particulars of each subject, the creator of these binders traced and collaged images from magazines and other sources (including in at least several cases original photos) to re-create these women in simulacra (finding look-alikes from magazines, pasting the heads of these women on the bodies of others). To these rather obsessive assemblages, the artist has added graphic and often exhaustive texts: describing scenes, providing dialogue, elaborating on biographical details. In short, an uncensored and almost narrative history of one man's sexual fantasies. And while these books were undoubtedly utilized primarily for masturbatory purposes, they were also made with obvious care over the course of what appears to be several decades. The artist composed them with an eye finely attuned to the visual effects he was creating. Almost two dozen individual women in all, arranged in tabbed sections over four binders. Many hundreds of pages of sketches and text total. In addition, source materials for the tracings and collages are included, as are numerous xeroxes of the final results. Admittedly, this collection is one of the most unsettling items we've handled. But it is also one of the most compelling. Henry Darger meets Raymond Pettibon: dark, weird, and twisted. But the work of an authentically original outsider, one who has given a powerful and unique rendering of his erotic world.

Poems [Signed and with a short notation in Greek]

Atlantic Monthly Press [Little, Brown and Company], 1960, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: near fine, First American editionA Very Good copy of the First American Edition, first printing (light handling soil and some tiny spots to boards, a few spots to the rear board, board corners bumped, some foxing to the closed page block's top edge), in a Near Fine dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, quite light edge wear, tiny chipping at spine ends and corners, small rub at lower portion of the front panel near the flap turn, expected age toning to the rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page where he also has made a notation in Greek. Containing 127 pages, the book presents the first comprehensive collection of Seferis' Poetry published in the United States. While some of the verses selected for this book previously appeared in the 1948 translation of "The King of Asine", the balance of them appear here in English for the first time. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good copy of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. A QUITE SCARCE COPY SIGNED AND WITH A SHORT NOTATION BY GEORGE SEFERIS.

Norman Granz presents Jazz at the Philharmonic, nr. 1 28.2.1960 20.30 uhr [Hamburg] Musikhalle,

Hamburg: 1960 - Light creases from old folds, some very slight cracking of the colour surface and one or two mild scuff, minute closed tear to the right-hand edge, but overall very good. Vintage outsize A0 format. Size: 112 x 82.6 cm, off-set lithographic concert poster. Floated in a black museum box-style frame. Superb large-scale poster for the JATP tour of Germany in 1960, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, the Jimmy Giuffre Three, Paul Smith Quartet, Roy Eldridge, and the Shelly Manne Quintet. An example of the work of Kieser's early collaborative atelier with typographer Hans Michel (1952-62) which produced some truly remarkable work, graphically highly original, and imbued with a great sensitivity to the aesthetic of the artists being promoted. Here red, black and white typography in lower case sans serif is overlaid on a portrait of Ella in black on red to stunning effect. Produced solely for the German tour this is an uncommon poster, particularly so in the A0 format in such sharp condition.

Archive of photographs from the personal files of LIFE photographer Dimitri Kessel

v.p., 1960. Approx. 500 gelatin silver prints and some color prints, many SIGNED by Kessel and captioned in his or another hand. Contents generally very good or better. A comprehensive, career-spanning archive of the great Ukrainian-born photojournalist Dimitri Kessel (1902-1995), in all, some 500 unique photographs. During his 60-year career, Kessel worked as an industrial photographer, a war correspondent and combat photographer, and a photo essayist for LIFE. During World War II, he sailed on convoy escorts in the North Atlantic, covered the landing of American troops in the Aleutian Islands and the British landing in Greece. He also photographed the Greek civil war. In later years, Kessel lived on the Yangtze River in China for seven months while producing a photo essay for LIFE. He photographed the Andes Mountains in South America and mining operations in Central Africa. Kessel is world famous for the fidelity of his camera recreations of great art, but was also a tough and adventurous news photographer. Comprises: 1: Collection of approx. 400 photos from Kessel's personal files, the majority showing Kessel at work or relaxing with his LIFE co-workers, most ca. 1940s-1960s. Many captioned on front or rear, mounting stains. Locations include Guantanamo, Cuba; Birminham, AL (with Joe Scherschel); Maine; Central America; Cairo; Bangcock. Collegues pictured include Frank Capa, Ed Thompson, Gijon Mili, and Alfred Eisenstaedt. A fascinating record of the ever-smiling Kessel at work and play. 2: Three photographs of a nude model for lingerie ad. Gelatin silver prints. 10-3/16 x 7-15/16 inches, New York: [1934]. Very good. Faint creasing at corners. Docketed on verso in pencil. Three photographs, taken by an unknown photographer, of Dimitri Kessel at work on his first commercial assignment. 3: Photograph of John Hersey on the Yangtze River [With:] two photographs, one of Hersey alone, one of Hersey and Kessel. Gelatin silver print. 9-1/2 x 7-11/16 inches, [China]: [1946]. Some faint creasing to top corners. Docketed on verso; date stamped "Mar 12 1946". Kessel and Hersey were on assignment together in China for LIFE in 1946. Kessel devotes an entire chapter of his memoirs to his time on the Yangtze: "When I checked in, John Hersey, then a contract writer for LIFE, was there. He had been assigned to do a text piece on a farming village called Red Pepper [ ... ] John suggested that I accompany him to the village, only about forty miles outside Peking, to make photographs to illustrate his piece. I said, fine, if he would accompany me to the Yangtze to do the text to go with my pictures. New York thought it was a great idea" (Kessel, On Assignment, p. 149). The previous summer THE NEW YORKER dedicated an entire issue to Hersey's HIROSHIMA. His novel, A SINGLE PEBBLE, about an engineer searching for a dam site on the Yangtze, would be based on his time on the river with Kessel. 4: [KESSEL, Dimitri?]. Portrait of Margaret Bourke-White in top hat, clutching a bottle of tequila and taking aim with a toy gun. Gelatin silver print (7-1/2 x 7-1/2 in.). n.p: ca. 1940s. The Shah and Princess Soraya married in 1951 and divorced in 1958 when it became apparent that she could not bear children. 16: Numerous large (approx 13 x 11 inch) gelatin silver prints, printed ca. 1984, for reproduction in ON ASSIGNMENT, including funeral of Gustav V of Sweden; Avila, Spain; La Girotte Dam; Igor Sikorsky; Caliph of Spanish Morocco; Aristotle Onassis; President Auriol of France pheasant hunting; Bohemia Moser porcelain plant; Bernini statues; Russian soldier in Vienna, 1948; Bethlehem Steel works. 17: [Portfolio of LIFE appearances of the photography of Dimitri Kessel, 1938-1956)].         Signed and Inscribed Original Ink Sketch

This Danish-born American artist grew so enamored with the American West, having worked ranches and even chased Pancho Villa back across the border, that he became a modern recreation of Frederic Remington, painting Western scenes and illustrating Western books, calendars and magazines. Original blue ballpoint signed and inscribed sketch, 1p, 10" X 5", n.p. [Phoeniz, AZ], 1960 March 5. Near fine. On heavy lined stock, Wieghorst sketches a Southwestern-style small adobe house with a covered porch, large chimney, separate small oven in front, fence and tree at left. A man in large sombrero squats in the shade of the porch, his horse resting nearby. Along the bottom, the artist writes: "To The Campbells with many thanks for a lovely party. / Mae & Olaf Wieghorst / Match 5th / 1960." Several others (doubtless fellow party attendees) sign the verso with various February and March 1960 dates and add comments. An outstanding example of this famed 20th century artist's work.
