        Ascending and Descending

Baarn: , 1960. Original lithograph on Simili Japon paper. Image size: 35.6 x 28.6 cm. Sheet size: 45.2 x 38.2 cm. Old hinging tape to verso of upper edge otherwise in excellent condition. Presented in a brown stained wooden frame with conservation glass. Edition of 56. Signed and numbered lower right in pencil by Escher. Ascending and Descending was influenced by and is an artistic implementation of the Penrose stairs, an impossible object devised by the mathematician Lionel Penrose. The characters that climb the impossible staircase represent a group of people that follow an inescapable destiny. Two other characters can be noticed on the lower levels of the building that do not participate in the ritual. Escher calls these two characters free people that do not like conformity.

Bancroft & Co., Publishers, Ltd., n. d. (ca 1960)]. - First edition. 4to. Near fine with the pop-up in perfect working order. Manufactured in Czechoslovakia under the direction of Kubasta, one of the greatest of 20th-century artists of the moveable book [nowadays known as "paper engineers"], this is one of his most impressive creations. The book is actually a large (9"x13") cloth-hinged cardboard folder, resembling a game board in construction, illus. front and back with Kubasta's colorful portrait of a one of Columbus's sailing ships. At the front hinge an 8pp. b&w story, "How Columbus Discovered America," is carefully tipped-in. What at first appears to be the inside back cover, with two more colorful Kubasta paintings, opens out to form the 18"x12" base for an 11" high, densely packed, 3-dimensional pop-up of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, complete with string attached to the sails. On the rear cover is a moveable ship's wheel, which when turned reveals portions of a map. In design, construction & illus., this is one of the most impressive pop-ups since Meggendorffer. We feel items like this are scarce and uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With two woodcuts by Zeljko Kujundzic (front-cover illustration, and one tipped-in sheet). Finlay's scarce second book, and first book of poems, published by Gael Turnbull and Michael Shayer's crucial imprint (which very likely helped inspire Finlay's own publishing ventures, begun soon after). Seemingly a review copy, with mimeographed promotional pamphlet laid in (stapled and folded once), featuring a two-page note on the book by Shayer, biographical notes on the poet and the artist, and contact information for the press.

        Hey! Diddle Diddle

[Brooklyn]: 'Zagar Press', 1960. One of 4 copies, signed and dated "I. Zagar 1960" on last leaf. Artist book in folding concertina format: double-page manuscript coloured title; 5 double-page manuscript coloured text openings each with a colored etching accompanying text. 1 vols. Oblong folio. Original decorated cloth over boards, endpapers with decorated crayon images of fish, trees etc. Fine. Early Work by Zagar Exceedingly rare early work by Isaiah Zagar (b. 1939), visionary vernacular artist, who is most widely known for his mosaic installation, the Magic Gardens site on South Street in Philadelphia. One of four copies of illustrations to the familiar nursery rhyme, a work produced while the artist studied under Fritz Eichenberg at Pratt. Visual elements expressed during his later career can be discerned here at the outset. From the artist's mission statement : "It is true to a certain extent; I have been copying Clarence [Schmidt] my whole career, trying to make a total encyclopedic vision that has no parameters and no end. My work is marked by events and is a mirror of the mind that is building and falling apart, having a logic but close to chaos, refusing to stay still for the camera, and giving one a sense of heaven and hell simultaneously." RARE.
