Bedtime for Frances [Contemporarily Inscribed, Signed, and Dated; Scarce First Issue Dust Jacket]

Harper & Brothers, 1960, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: very good, First editionA Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this highly-notable children's book, in the Publisher's original white and green boards(light soiling, some tiny knocks to the front board's leading edge and tiny pushes to the board bottoms), in a Very Good first state dust jacket priced at $2.50 (some light chipping to the spine ends and flap turn corners, a small and mild tide mark to the front panel's upper left corner and one to the rear panel's lower right corner as well, quite modest soiling, small chip and associated short closed tear to the front panel's lower edge, and a short closed tear to the rear panel's upper edge), CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY RUSSELL HOBAN on the front free endpaper in all capital letters as follows: For / Young Fawcett - / An invaluable guide / and pocket companion / containing / complete instructions / for / getting young ladies / into bed / - from / a man of experience // Russ Hoban // 5/22/60; Russell Hoban's third book and the first book in his highly popular series of seven picture books that feature Frances, a little girl whose character was based in part on Hoban's experiences with his own four children and their friends. Explaining his inspiration for this particular book, Hoban stated: "Our next-door neighbors had a daughter who always found ways of stalling at bedtime. Though I didn't use any of her specific stalls in the book, this little girl was the reason that Bedtime for Frances came about." Garth Williams illustrated "Bedtime for Frances" and depicted her as a badger, presumably to show something of her character. In our experience, copies of "Bedtime for Frances" are quite the scarcest in the series. Those in the first state dust jacket, as is this copy, are quite a bit scarcer, and copies in the first state dust jacket signed by Russell Hoban are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of the debut book in Russell Hoban's famed Frances series of Children's books, named (along with "The Cricket in Times Square" and "Island of the Blue Dolphins") by the American Library Association as a Notable Children's Book for 1960, CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY RUSSELL HOBAN. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE INDEED.

ROK NAVY [Interior Title, Original Photograph Album]

np, [ca. 1960-1961]. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong folio commercial album measuring approximately 10.5" x 14.5". Green faux-leather covered boards, string bound. 24 card leaves, 21 with 77 black and white snapshot photographs, each measuring approximately 5" x 3.5", recto mounted loosely in corners. Final 3 leaves blank, an additional 3 photographs laid-in; 80 prints total. Hand-painted title illustration to first endpaper, two vignette scenes on first and fourth leaves. Mild edge wear to album exterior, otherwise generally near fine. Album belonging to Sergeant John A. England, United States Army, from his 1960 trans-Pacific cruise aboard the U.S.N.S. General Edwin D. Patrick, a WWII-era transport ship based out of San Francisco. A contingent from the Republic of Korea Navy was aboard and the album focuses heavily on the Korean sailors and their interactions with American servicemen. A brilliant, hand-painted title illustration in acrylic titled 'ROK NAVY' and two additional vignette works in the same medium illuminate the album. The images are clear and well composed, creating a significant record of U.S.-Korean relations and of the Edwin D. Patrick, which was the longest surviving of the P2 carriers in the U.S. fleet, launched in 1945, decommissioned in 1968 and sent to scrap in 2010.

EXCERPTS FROM VISIONS OF CODY - LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED - COPY #1

New York: New Directions, 1960. First Edition. One of 750 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy No.1. Octavo; 3/4 white paper over quarter purple cloth, with titles stamped in silver on spine and printed in purple and red on front panel; acetate dustwrapper; 128pp, [1]; illus; publisher's original printed prospectus laid in. Top edge slightly dusty, upper board edges lightly rubbed, with upper right corner tips gently tapped, though still sharp; Near Fine in a Near Fine, lightly-rubbed wrapper. Housed in a handsome half morocco and marbled paper slipcase. Culled from the pages of his 512-page manuscript, the excerpts from Kerouac's novel 'Visions of Cody' were shaped by his publisher at New Directions into a tight, cohesive package - something Kerouac's original manuscript lacked. At the center of the novel was Neal Cassady, a dominant influence in Kerouac's life who, as Dean Moriarty in 'On the Road,' achieved literary immortality. It would be another 13 years before the novel was published in full, some four years after Kerouac's death. Not an uncommon book, but as copies go, one could hardly do better than copy No.1.         THE DAYS RUN AWAY LIKE WILD HORSES OVER THE HILLS - RIBBON COPY, WITH THE AUTHOR'S HOLOGRAPH CORRECTIONS

Los Angeles: [S.i., n.d. but ca.late 1960's]. 218 lines typed on 4 sheets of white stock (8.5" x 11"), with the author's holograph corrections throughout in red, blue, and black ballpoint pen. Horizontal folds smoothed-out, staple holes at upper left corners, with light toning and thumb-soil to margins and a faint circular stain to pp.3-4; Very Good or better. A substantial, early poem by Bukowski, first published in the pages of E.V. Griffith's HEARSE 10 and collected later that year in his second major poetry collection bearing the same name. While a number of manuscript poems appear in the auction record over the last decade - most from the Groff and Runfola collections - none rise to this level of significance, and none were used to title a major collection.
