Norman Granz presents Jazz at the Philharmonic, nr. 1

Hamburg: , 1960. 28.2.1960 20.30 uhr [Hamburg] Musikhalle, Vintage outsize A0 format. Size: 112 x 82.6 cm, off-set lithographic concert poster. Floated in a black museum box-style frame. Light creases from old folds, some very slight cracking of the colour surface and one or two mild scuff, minute closed tear to the right-hand edge, but overall very good. Superb large-scale poster for the JATP tour of Germany in 1960, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, the Jimmy Giuffre Three, Paul Smith Quartet, Roy Eldridge, and the Shelly Manne Quintet. An example of the work of Kieser's early collaborative atelier with typographer Hans Michel (1952-62) which produced some truly remarkable work, graphically highly original, and imbued with a great sensitivity to the aesthetic of the artists being promoted. Here red, black and white typography in lower case sans serif is overlaid on a portrait of Ella in black on red to stunning effect. Produced solely for the German tour this is an uncommon poster, particularly so in the A0 format in such sharp condition.

Robert Bresson on the set of "Le procès de jeanne d'arc" [The Trial of Joan of Arc] (1962)

N.p.: N.p., 1960. Vintage borderless photograph from the 1962 film by photographer Andre Marinie. A candid, on-the-set photograph of the film's reclusive director, Robert Bresson, behind the camera, typically pensive and with cigarette in hand. Marinie's stamp and stamp from the film's production companies, Agnes Delahaie Productions and Consortium Pathé on the verso. Linda Rasmussen at AllMovie notes: "Characteristically breaking with tradition, director Robert Bresson presents a realistic, unique view of the life and death of Joan of Arc. Using a script based on the actual transcript notes taken during her trial, Bresson focuses on the psychological and physical torture that Joan had to endure, showing how these techniques were used to break her resolve and cause her to eventually recant her faith. "With impeccable historical accuracy Bresson re-creates the story of the peasant girl who, after leading an unsuccessful revolt against the government, was brought to trial, convicted of heresy, and burned as a witch. However, Bresson shows Joan (Florence Carrez) as a woman more sophisticated and calculating and less naive than she has normally been represented. His Joan, while more real, is no less heroic than the traditional Joan." In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Near Fine.

A week after JFK is nominated for President, Eleanor Roosevelt writes "I know that the office of President in itself, with its tremendous responsibilities, is apt to bring a sense of greatness to the man who occupies it ? Mr Kennedy has already shown signs of understanding of the problems which confront us He is perhaps young but as you look around the world you will see that young men are taking the lead in nation after nation, and it may well be for us to have youth to deal with youth?"

New York, NY, July 21, 1960. 6.5" x 10.25". "Typed Letter Signed ""Eleanor Roosevelt,"" 1p, 6.5"" x 10.25"". On her personal letterhead as ""Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt,"" New York, July 21, 1960. To Mr. Weiss. Fine condition. In full, ?I appreciate your support of Adlai Stevenson and your disappointment in his failure to get the nomination. However, I hope you will vote in November for the Democratic party. All forward looking legislation that we have today has been passed under Democratic leadership. True, we had leaders, but it is too early to say that the ticket will not give us the kind of leadership that will be forward looking.""There are signs that Mr. Kennedy intends to use both Mr. Stevenson and Mr. Bowles in dealing with foreign affairs and this shows his appreciation of the intelligence, experience, and character of these two men. I shall work for Mr. Kennedy and work with more faith than I think you have, for I know that the office of President in itself, with its tremendous responsibilities, is apt to bring a sense of greatness to the man who occupies it.""I think that Mr. Kennedy has already shown signs of understanding of the problems which confront us. He is perhaps young but as you look around the world you will see that young men are taking the lead in nation after nation, and it may well be for us to have youth to deal with youth. I am going to hope for great things if the Democrats win in November, and I hope you will not refuse to vote for our nominee and the party.""On July 13, 1960, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy was nominated for President on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt, supported former Illinois Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson, the party's nominee in 1952 and 1956, for President. On July 16th, Mrs. Roosevelt said that she thought it was ""excellent"" that Texas Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson was chosen as JFK's running mate for Vice President. ""It's a wise move,"" she said. In an August 2, 1960, press conference in Chicago, the former First Lady said that she would prefer Stevenson as Secretary of State over Connecticut Congressman Chester Bowles.President Kennedy appointed Adlai Stevenson as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Chester Bowles as Under Secretary of State."

        Truman Speaks

New York: Columbia University Press 1960 - 8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket; with a touch of soiling. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Honorable Philip C. Jessup, with kindest regards and happy memories, Harry S. Truman, 4 / 60," on the half-title page.---- Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's allegations severely damaged Jessup's career and reputation. Nonetheless, President Truman appointed Jessup as United States delegate to the United Nations in 1951. However, when the appointment came before the Senate it was not approved, largely because of McCarthy's influence. Truman circumvented the Senate by assigning Jessup to the United Nations on an interim appointment. In the closing section of "Truman Speaks," entitled "One Hysteria and Witch-Hunting," Truman recalled with admiration that "Philip Jessup was misrepresented and lied about [by McCarthy] to beat the band, and he faced it and went through with it." An extraordinary presentation copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Bedtime for Frances [Contemporarily Inscribed, Signed, and Dated; Scarce First Issue Dust Jacket]

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1960. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this highly-notable children's book, in the Publisher's original white and green boards (light soiling, some tiny knocks to the front board's leading edge and tiny pushes to the board bottoms), in a Very Good first state dust jacket priced at $2.50 (some light chipping to the spine ends and flap turn corners, a small and mild tide mark to the front panel's upper left corner and one to the rear panel's lower right corner as well, quite modest soiling, small chip and associated short closed tear to the front panel's lower edge, and a short closed tear to the rear panel's upper edge), CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY RUSSELL HOBAN on the front free endpaper in all capital letters as follows: For / Young Fawcett - / An invaluable guide / and pocket companion / containing / complete instructions / for / getting young ladies / into bed / - from / a man of experience // Russ Hoban // 5/22/60; Russell Hoban's third book and the first book in his highly popular series of seven picture books that feature Frances, a little girl whose character was based in part on Hoban's experiences with his own four children and their friends. Explaining his inspiration for this particular book, Hoban stated: “Our next-door neighbors had a daughter who always found ways of stalling at bedtime. Though I didnÂ’t use any of her specific stalls in the book, this little girl was the reason that Bedtime for Frances came about.” Garth Williams illustrated "Bedtime for Frances" and depicted her as a badger, presumably to show something of her character. In our experience, copies of "Bedtime for Frances" are quite the scarcest in the series. Those in the first state dust jacket, as is this copy, are quite a bit scarcer, and copies in the first state dust jacket signed by Russell Hoban are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy of the debut book in Russell Hoban's famed Frances series of Children's books, named (along with "The Cricket in Times Square" and "Island of the Blue Dolphins") by the American Library Association as a Notable Children's Book for 1960, CONTEMPORARILY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY RUSSELL HOBAN. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE INDEED.

To Kill a Mockingbird (Orig Ed. Stated 2nd Impression)

Lippincott: PA 1960 - First edition, stated second impression. This is the original trade edition, not a later version or club issue. About a half inch of the bottom rear board has a shadow-ghost, perhaps from an old style mylar cover. Bottom front board has one small tape ghost. This does not appear to be a former library copy. Front endpaper/pastedown have minor foxing and some moderate ghost-offset. Sans half title page, else all is present, including title/copyright page. The title page has a small former owner address label (pre zip code) the title page and joining verso of ffep have heavy offset and what appears to be old tape ghosts. Upper rear joint has approx 2" starting and a tape ghost on upper and lower edge of rear pastedown along with some offset on joining page. The compete text is very good, other than described flaws to boards the rest is very good. Overall a good holding copy of a scarce 2nd printing. Lacks jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
