An earlier version of Greene's essay had previously appeared as a contribution to exhibition catalogues issued by the Knoedler Gallery in New York and by Arthur Tooth in London but this is the true first edition as an "A" item with only Greene's text and with new illustrations.         For Your Eyes Only

London: Jonathan Cape, 1960. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. A very sharp example of the eighth novel in the James Bond series. The collection contains five short stories: "From a View to a Kill", "For Your Eyes Only", "Quantum of Solace", "Risico" and "The Hildebrand Rarity". It has "the only British dust jacket with any depiction of Bond: the eye in the peephole is his. Fleming made artist Richard Chopping paint it many times, until he was satisfied with the shape and, particularly, the color" (Biondi & Pickard, 46). It was made into the 1981 film starring Roger Moore and Carole Bouquet; the 1985 film A View to a Kill starring Moore, Christopher Walken, and Grace Jones and the 2008 film A Quantum of Solace starring Daniel Craig.

Bancroft & Co., Publishers, Ltd., n. d. (ca 1960)]., 1960. First edition. 4to. Near fine with the pop-up in perfect working order. Manufactured in Czechoslovakia under the direction of Kubasta, one of the greatest of 20th-century artists of the moveable book [nowadays known as "paper engineers"], this is one of his most impressive creations. The book is actually a large (9"x13") cloth-hinged cardboard folder, resembling a game board in construction, illus. front and back with Kubasta's colorful portrait of a one of Columbus's sailing ships. At the front hinge an 8pp. b&w story, "How Columbus Discovered America," is carefully tipped-in. What at first appears to be the inside back cover, with two more colorful Kubasta paintings, opens out to form the 18"x12" base for an 11" high, densely packed, 3-dimensional pop-up of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, complete with string attached to the sails. On the rear cover is a moveable ship's wheel, which when turned reveals portions of a map. In design, construction & illus., this is one of the most impressive pop-ups since Meggendorffer. We feel items like this are scarce and uncommon.

Philadelphia:: J. B. Lippincott Co.. (1960).. Book Club edition. A later one we presume in black simulated-cloth boards lettered in white on spine with top edge yellow and no statement of edition or printing on copyright page. In a dust jacket that looks quite like the first with the photo of Lee by Capote on rear panel and Jonathan Daniels quote on rear flap; but with Capote quote in black at top of front panel and "Book Club Edition" printed at base of front panel. INSCRIBED BY HARPER LEE on the front endpaper, "To - -/ with best wishes,/ Harper Lee," and SIGNED on the dedication page BY ALICE F. LEE, her sister and the co-dedicatee (the printed dedication reads, "To Mr. Lee and Alice/ in consideration of Love & Affection). The perennially popular Pulitzer Prize winner that was made into an award-winning movie. Rear endpaper cracked at hinge though hinge still holding, otherwise very good or better with shelf wear to spine ends; in very good dust jacket with faintly rubbed creases to spine, spine lettering slightly tanned, and small rubbed chips at spine ends and corners. An affordable alternative to the first. .

An African Treasury: Articles, Essays, Stories, Poems, by Black Africans

New York: Crown, 1960. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. xiv, 207p. dj. 21cm. Chipping at ends of backstrip and cover corners. INSCRIBED to Amy Spingarn ("Especially for Amy Spingarn, Sincerely -- Langston New York, June 24, 1960"). Three postcards to Amy Spingarn from Nigeria laid in - one is from Hughes and the other two are from "Arthur" (presumably Arthur B. Spingarn, her brother-in-law who succeeded her husband as National President of the NAACP in 1940 and served in that capacity for a quarter of a century). Hughes went to Africa in November, 1960, to attend the inauguration of Nnamdi Azikwe as Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of newly-independent Nigeria. The Hughes postcard is undated and was sent from Kano. Its message is short: "Greetings from Nigeria! Langston." We assume that independence of Nigeria (and other former colonies) brought the President of the NAACP to Nigeria in October, 1960. Spingarn's postcards are dated October 5 and 14. The earlier one reports that he visited University College in Ibadan and the latter reports that he has had a happy and fruitful time and will have much to report when he returns.

Poems [Signed and with a short notation in Greek]

Boston: Atlantic Monthly Press [Little, Brown and Company], 1960. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/near fine. A Very Good copy of the First American Edition, first printing (light handling soil and some tiny spots to boards, a few spots to the rear board, board corners bumped, some foxing to the closed page block's top edge), in a Near Fine dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, quite light edge wear, tiny chipping at spine ends and corners, small rub at lower portion of the front panel near the flap turn, expected age toning to the rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page where he also has made a notation in Greek. Containing 127 pages, the book presents the first comprehensive collection of Seferis' Poetry published in the United States. While some of the verses selected for this book previously appeared in the 1948 translation of "The King of Asine", the balance of them appear here in English for the first time. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good copy of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. A QUITE SCARCE COPY SIGNED AND WITH A SHORT NOTATION BY GEORGE SEFERIS.

Washington, 1960. Old folds. Envelope with some wear and soiling. Near fine. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. An interesting letter written by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to newspaper columnist Evelyn Peyton Gordon of the WASHINGTON DAILY NEWS, just a month after her husband's election to the presidency. In this letter Kennedy provides insight into her expectations and her hopes for her life as First Lady. She is remarkably candid about her expectation that the press will publish inaccurate information, her desire to preserve some privacy for her children, and her concern that her family's new position not disrupt the lives of their friends. She writes: "It is so nice to read things written by someone with such great common sense. I am thinking of your column tonight about my fox hunting in Virginia. You are most correct - my greatest wish is not to disrupt that peaceful community, and spoil it for my many friends who live there, and for my own children. That is why I chose it - because it is such a private place." Her son, John Jr., was born just days earlier on Nov. 25, and Kennedy notes that she will not be well enough to ride or hunt before the season ends in March. She explains that her purpose in renting a house in Virginia is not to hunt but rather "just to be in the country with my children & occasionally go riding." She also clarifies she has only one horse, which she shares with a friend, not "a stable full of thoroughbred hunters." In closing she adds: "This letter is just for you so please don't quote any of it - though of course the facts you may use if you ever wish, in your words.

ROK NAVY [Interior Title, Original Photograph Album]

np, [ca. 1960-1961]. Hardcover. Near fine. Oblong folio commercial album measuring approximately 10.5" x 14.5". Green faux-leather covered boards, string bound. 24 card leaves, 21 with 77 black and white snapshot photographs, each measuring approximately 5" x 3.5", recto mounted loosely in corners. Final 3 leaves blank, an additional 3 photographs laid-in; 80 prints total. Hand-painted title illustration to first endpaper, two vignette scenes on first and fourth leaves. Mild edge wear to album exterior, otherwise generally near fine. Album belonging to Sergeant John A. England, United States Army, from his 1960 trans-Pacific cruise aboard the U.S.N.S. General Edwin D. Patrick, a WWII-era transport ship based out of San Francisco. A contingent from the Republic of Korea Navy was aboard and the album focuses heavily on the Korean sailors and their interactions with American servicemen. A brilliant, hand-painted title illustration in acrylic titled 'ROK NAVY' and two additional vignette works in the same medium illuminate the album. The images are clear and well composed, creating a significant record of U.S.-Korean relations and of the Edwin D. Patrick, which was the longest surviving of the P2 carriers in the U.S. fleet, launched in 1945, decommissioned in 1968 and sent to scrap in 2010.

John F. Kennedy's hand-annotated and corrected reading copy of his September 22, 1960 campaign speech in South Dakota, attacking Nixon's agricultural policies, fighting communist expansion, and expressing his hopes for world peace. With over forty words in his hand!

[Sioux Falls, SD], September 22, 1960. 8.5" x 11". "The surviving pages of an original Typescript, 20 pages [pp. 1-4 & 9-23], [Sioux Falls, South Dakota], September 22, 1960, being Kennedy's heavily-edited final reading copy of a campaign speech with approximately forty-five words in his hand together with additional underlines and deletions. Some light marginal wear, some creasing and faint dampstains, else very good condition. The wide-ranging speech to South Dakota farmers deftly places their specific interests in the context of the United States' leadership in world affairs. After demonstrating his command of complex economic policy, he appeals to that policy's place within the larger framework of national affairs ""by stressing that this is not an issue for farmers alone. It is not an issue for the Farm Belt alone. This is a basic issue of American strength - and only a strong America can win the peace. For peace is our real goal. Peace overshadows every other effort. And those of you who fought in the South Pacific or in other theatres of war Europe - those of you who might have traveled, as I have traveled, to Poland and Eastern Europe and seen the despair of a people in chains - share my dedication to securing a just and lasting peace before it is too late. There are trouble spots all over the world today. They are increasing. The communists|grow bolder every day. Their respect for our power grows less. And unless we get moving and building and strengthening our country and our economy the peace we wseek will be in deadly peril. With God's help, let us act now to save the peace - not as farmers or businessmen or workers, not as spokesmen for any group or section, but as Americans devoted to freedom, and to the future of our children, and children around the world."" By this point in his political career, Kennedy had reached his rhetorical stride, as evidenced in the last-minute edits he made to this reading copy. In his speechmaking, Kennedy appreciated the use of repetition to drive home a point and honed the present speech to increase its power and effectiveness. On page three he takes a swipe at Nixon's policies, beginning three successive paragraphs with ""But this is the same Mr. Nixon who..."" Kennedy also understood the power of the active voice. Directly after those three paragraphs, Kennedy deleted an entire paragraph written in the passive voice: ""The Republican party's failure to tell the truth to the American farmer can be seen in the promises which have already been made -- and in the record which as already been compiled."" (This is a marked change from the long-winded speeches that Kennedy was delivering during his first run for Congress in 1946). Directly after this deleted passage, he continues in his use of repetitive language, but this time beginning the passages with ""Today the Republicans promise,"" repeating the thought twice more to drive the point home.         Pavannes and Divagations [Signed and with Original Drawing by Pound]

London: Peter Owen Limited, 1960. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, light rubs to board corners and spine ends, three corners bumped, slight indentations to the outer and inner lower corners of the leaves), in a Very Good, lightly-toned, dust jacket (slight soiling, spine ends pushed, slight tide mark to the spine tail, light corner wear, small indent to the front panel and a tiny tear to the front panel's upper edge), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the title page AND WITH POUND'S HAND-DRAWN GADFLY FIGURE on page 231 above his controversial definition of Religion which states as follows: "RELIGION: another of the numerous failures resulting from an attempt to popularize art." [A gadfly is a person who persistently annoys or provokes others with criticism, schemes, ideas, demands, requests, etc...] The book includes a selection of Ezra Pound's Prose and Poetry, including his possibly-autobiographical "Indiscretions", a group of facetious verses, Pound's translations from the dialogues of Fontenelle, and more. With only 1,000 copies of the first UK edition having been issued [4,000 copies of the first American edition were issued (New Directions in 1958)], copies of the UK first edition are rather uncommon. Signed copies of either first edition are quite uncommon as well and signed copies of the first UK edition with an original illustration hand-drawn by Pound are quite scarce indeed. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY EZRA POUND AND WITH AN ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION HAND-DRAWN BY POUND. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        Lithographs of Marc Chagall

1960 - (CHAGALL, Marc) CAIN, Julien and SORLIER, Charles. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo, New York, Boston: André Sauret; George Braziller; Boston Book and Art Shop, 1960-86. Six volumes. Folio, original beige cloth, original dust jackets (themselves original lithographs), original acetates. $11,500.First editions in English of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall’s lithographs, richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (including the dust jackets)."Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. (Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously.) All were issued separately over a period of 26 years and are very scarce as a complete set. All volumes published simultaneously in English and French. Volumes I and II also issued in a deluxe signed limited edition of only 100 and 150 copies. Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. See Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94. Cloth of Volume II mildly toned, occasional minor nick or rub to extremities of dust jackets and acetate. A beautiful set in about-fine condition.
