Exceptional Typed Letter Signed on personal letterhead

Merioneth, England, 1960. unbound. 1 page, 10 x 8 inches, Merioneth, England, May 23, 1960. In this letter, Russell provides a scathing review of a book sent to him by a colleague, in part: "...I have now read it, but I am somewhat puzzled as to what to think of it...There is, however, a point in your discussion of causation which does not seem to me valid. You suggest that the effect can be inferred from the cause rather than vice versa...I am not sure that I get the drift of your general position and, if I do, I find that I cannot agree with it. The whole conception of context, which seems fundamental in your system, is, to my mind, vague; but I feel that perhaps you intended it to be so and are suspicious of attempts at precision...Your Man-Thing puzzles me completely, as it seems to have purposes and to be much the same as what is usually called "God..." Near fine condition. British philosopher and mathematician who was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. "You say that mathematical logic should only be employed where number or quantity is concerned. The main point of mathematical logic is to extend mathematical methods beyond this narrow region.

Pavannes and Divagations [Signed and with Original Drawing by Pound]

Peter Owen Limited, 1960, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: very good, First edition. A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, light rubs to board corners and spine ends, three corners bumped, slight indentations to the outer and inner lower corners of the leaves), in a Very Good, lightly-toned, dust jacket (slight soiling, spine ends pushed, slight tide mark to the spine tail, light corner wear, small indent to the front panel and a tiny tear to the front panel's upper edge), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the title page AND WITH POUND'S HAND-DRAWN GADFLY FIGURE on page 231 above his controversial definition of Religion which states as follows: "RELIGION: another of the numerous failures resulting from an attempt to popularize art." [A gadfly is a person who persistently annoys or provokes others with criticism, schemes, ideas, demands, requests, etc...] The book includes a selection of Ezra Pound's Prose and Poetry, including his possibly-autobiographical "Indiscretions", a group of facetious verses, Pound's translations from the dialogues of Fontenelle, and more. With only 1,000 copies of the first UK edition having been issued [4,000 copies of the first American edition were issued (New Directions in 1958)], copies of the UK first edition are rather uncommon. Signed copies of either first edition are quite uncommon as well and signed copies of the first UK edition with an original illustration hand-drawn by Pound are quite scarce indeed. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY EZRA POUND AND WITH AN ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION HAND-DRAWN BY POUND. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Rosenbach A Biography [Extra-Annotated Association Copy]

Cleveland: World. 1960. By many accounts, the best biography of a bookseller and one of the best books on the antiquarian book trade ever written. John Fleming was for a generation the dean of American antiquarian booksellers, as A.S.W. Rosenbach had been before him. Fleming began working for Rosenbach as a clerk, and eventually worked his way up to being vice-president of the firm; Rosenbach was both his patron and mentor. This copy is inscribed by Fleming to Rosenbach's longtime assistant: "To Jerome E. Brooks. My first friend in the Book World. John Fleming." Brooks has 14 citings in the index, to which he has added, in pencil, a 15th; however, in this copy, Brooks has an even greater presence, having marked or enthusiastically annotated the text more than 100 times, providing either wordless comment by his emphasis, or emphatically correcting the facts (or the myth) about Rosenbach. Rosenbach's clients had been the most avid, and richest, book collectors of their day, and they built many of what are now the most famous institutional collections of rare books and manuscripts. Fleming continued the tradition after Rosenbach died, and became a mentor to another generation of booksellers. Obviously a well-read copy, but still very good, in a good dust jacket chipped at the crown, with splitting to the folds and evidence of aged tape-strengthening on verso. A unique copy, historically interesting, and in many places an addition to the historical record. First Edition. Hardcover.

Poems [Signed and with a short notation in Greek]

Boston: Atlantic Monthly Press [Little, Brown and Company], 1960. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/near fine. A Very Good copy of the First American Edition, first printing (light handling soil and some tiny spots to boards, a few spots to the rear board, board corners bumped, some foxing to the closed page block's top edge), in a Near Fine dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, quite light edge wear, tiny chipping at spine ends and corners, small rub at lower portion of the front panel near the flap turn, expected age toning to the rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page where he also has made a notation in Greek. Containing 127 pages, the book presents the first comprehensive collection of Seferis' Poetry published in the United States. While some of the verses selected for this book previously appeared in the 1948 translation of "The King of Asine", the balance of them appear here in English for the first time. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good copy of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. A QUITE SCARCE COPY SIGNED AND WITH A SHORT NOTATION BY GEORGE SEFERIS.

        La Guerra de Guerillas

Havana: Impreso en los talleres tipográficos del I.N.R.A. por el Departamento de Instrucción del MINFAR [Printed in the typographical workshops of the National Institute for Agrarian Reform for the Department of Instruction of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces],, 1960. A Camillo. Octavo. Wire-stitched in the original light card pictorial wraps. Housed in black quarter morocco, book-style, drop-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. 5 full-page illustrations to the text. Wraps rubbed, soiled and chipped, spine browned, lacking 10 mm at the tail, and with some repairs, lower panel a little damped at the lower margin, medium toning and some light foxing, largely toward the rear, overall a remarkably well-preserved copy. First edition of Guevara's highly influential manual of guerrilla warfare, this copy inscribed on the front free endpaper to one of the pressmen who worked on the book; "Al maquinista Poder Hernandez cuya dedicación permitió hacer rapidamente este manual, Che, Habana, 60 [To machinist Power Hernandez whose dedication allowed the speedy production of this handbook]". An extremely uncommon book, quickly, cheaply, just plain badly produced, we have been able to trace just one other inscribed copy, that sent to exiled Argentinian dictator Juan Perón, offered at Sotheby's in 2012. Based on his personal experience as one of the theoretical and "battlefield" leaders of the recently concluded Cuban Revolution, Guevara's guide to asymmetric warfare remains essential for the study of the subject after more than half a century. Perhaps his most original contribution being that of "foquismo"; a "Latin American variation of the guerrilla warfare theory turned the Marxist-Maoist formulation of the political party driving the military forces on its head. In this articulation, it was not the political vanguard that would create the popular army, but the guerrilla force itself could be a revolutionary fusion of political and military authority. The guerrillas could act as a revolutionary 'vanguard' party in a nascent form … In fact, a fundamental lesson that Guevara drew from the Cuban Revolution was that an insurrection in itself could create the necessary conditions for a Revolution. Such an insurrection should be organised by a relatively small group of guerrillas—the foco (focus). The government's inability to eliminate the highly mobile guerrillas would force it into over-reaction against the population. The foco would thus act as a catalyst for the wider popular insurrection that would flow from government repression" (Kalyanaraman, "Conceptualisation of Guerrilla Warfare" in Strategic Analysis, Vol. 27, No. 2, 2003, p.180). As Minister of Industries Guevara was de facto head of the I.N.R.A., on whose presses this fragile little book was produced, and was responsible for raising and training the Institute's 100,000 strong militia, the primary role of which was the seizure and redistribution land expropriated under the Agrarian Reform Law. A wonderfully evocative copy of this important little book.

Le testament d'Orphée [Testament of Orpheus] (Original French lobby card photo)

Cinédis, Paris 1960 - Original black-and-white photographic lobby card from the 1960 film, "Testament of Orpheus," Jean Cocteau's final work in the cinema. The last film in Cocteau's "Orphic" trilogy, following "The Blood of a Poet" (1930) and "Orphée" (1950). The only film in the trilogy featuring Cocteau himself, as an aging poet who knows he is dying (as indeed he was), his greatest desire being to experience rebirth so that he can qualify for celestial immortality. With cameos by Pablo Picasso, Charles Aznavour, bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguen, and Yul Brynner. A few seconds of color are spliced in at one point, a surreal effect used prior to this film in "Portrait of Jennie" (1948) and later in Samuel Fuller's "Shock Corridor" (1963).Having run out of funds in mid-production, Cocteau was given the prize money won by François Truffaut for "Les Quatre Cents Coups" in 1959 to complete filming. Truffaut, the father of the French New Wave, produced the film.12 x 9.5 inches, double weight. Near Fine. Small French cinema photo store logo stamped on the verso.Criterion Collection 69.
