It was originally performed as a curtain-raiser for Endgame, though continues to be performed as a stand alone feature to this day. Teresita Garcia-Suro, costume designer and actress who worked with Rick Cluchey as part of the San Quentin Drama Workshop. She worked with Beckett when he directed performances of Krapp's Last Tape and Endgame staged at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in 1980.         À bout de souffle [Breathless] (Original Pressbook for the 1960 film)

Paris: Les Films Impéria / Films Around the World, 1960. Original pressbook for the 1960 film. A fascinating object, created in a die-cut style we have never seen duplicated, made by Films Around the World, the distributor that picked up the film for international distribution. The only copy we have ever seen. With a middle splash page containing a grouping of blurbs that anyone could retire on critically, including Jean Cocteau, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Bessy, Jacques Becker, and Joseph Kessel. Godard's first feature film, written by François Truffaut, and arguably the most important film of the French New Wave. In addition to promoting an entirely new approach to cinema, cross cultural boundaries were broken, as the film's female star was American actress Jean Seberg, and her boyfriend, Jean-Paul Belmondo's Michel, is a thug obsessed with Humphrey Bogart. 14 pages, saddle stitched, 11 x 17 inches. Very Good plus, with a single horizontal fold at the center. Criterion Collection 408.

Le testament d'Orphée [Testament of Orpheus] (Original French lobby card photo)

Paris: Cinédis, 1960. Original black-and-white photographic lobby card from the 1960 film, "Testament of Orpheus," Jean Cocteau's final work in the cinema. The last film in Cocteau's "Orphic" trilogy, following "The Blood of a Poet" (1930) and "Orphée" (1950). The only film in the trilogy featuring Cocteau himself, as an aging poet who knows he is dying (as indeed he was), his greatest desire being to experience rebirth so that he can qualify for celestial immortality. With cameos by Pablo Picasso, Charles Aznavour, bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguen, and Yul Brynner. A few seconds of color are spliced in at one point, a surreal effect used prior to this film in "Portrait of Jennie" (1948) and later in Samuel Fuller's "Shock Corridor" (1963). Having run out of funds in mid-production, Cocteau was given the prize money won by François Truffaut for "Les Quatre Cents Coups" in 1959 to complete filming. Truffaut, the father of the French New Wave, produced the film. 12 x 9.5 inches, double weight. Near Fine. Small French cinema photo store logo stamped on the verso. Criterion Collection 69.

GYPSY (Inscribed By Stephen Sondheim, a Fine/Fine Review Copy with Ethel Merman's Signature Tipped in)

New York: Random House, 1960. Sondheim, Stephen (Lyrics), Jule Stein (Music), Arthur Laurents (Book). GYPSY. Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. New York: Random House, (1960). First Edition, first printing. A fine copy in a fine priced ($2.95) dust jacket, a tiny bit of soil to the back panel but otherwise almost faultless. INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "To Jack/ Happy 75th! / Stephen Sondheim." Basis for the 1962 film adaptation of the same name starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood. A SIGNED card by Ethel Merman (who created and made famous the Broadway role of Gypsy's mother) has been tipped onto the front-free endpaper. Finally, to top off this very special copy, the original publisher's review slip dated April 26th, 1960 has been laid in. Stephen Sondheim has been a generous signed of posters, programs, photos, and even music quotations. But, as with most of Stephen Sondheim's hardcover libretti, GYPSY was published in a very small first printing designed for a tiny specialty market and there were never public signings. Inscribed copies of the published first edition such as this one, in superlative original condition, are rarely found and highly prized.         By the Man Himself.

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1960. As told to Bob Considine and Bill Slocum. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine and front board lettered in white and orange, top edge red, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. 8 photographic plates. An excellent copy in the price-clipped dust jacket a touched rubbed and creased at spine-ends. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed "To my old friend Charles Gore, in memory of the old days at Benton Harbor, lots of luck pal, Jack Dempsey, 5-23-60". Old days indeed, Dempsey is referring to his first defence of the world title that he took from Jess Willard in 1919; "My first defence of the title was on Labor Day, 1920, against a dying friend of mine. I knocked him out because I loved the guy. Hell of a guy. Billy Miske" (p.126). The fight took place at the Floyd Fitzsimmons Arena, Benton Harbor, Michigan, owned by and named for a lifelong friend of Dempsey's, a local sports promoter. The recipient, Charles W. Gore, was a prominent attorney, later a Michigan circuit judge, and evidently at the time of the Miske fight something of a "sport" . A pleasing association, harking back to the Golden Era of American pugilism.

The Subterraneans (Complete set of still photographs from the film)

Los Angeles: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1960. Original set of twelve color still photographs from the 1960 film. From one perspective, a fairly one-dimensional representation--perhaps even a caricature--of Beat culture, but culturally fascinating in that it was made at the height of the Beat era, with A-list talent by a top studio, and, until Walter Salles' 2012 adaptation of "On the Road," was the only feature-length film ever made from a Kerouac novel. Kerouac was paid $15,000 by MGM for the rights to the book, and bought his first home with the proceeds, on Long Island. A film that rarely screened today, and has never been available on any kind of home viewing format. While its perspective on the actual Beat scene may be skewed or wildly misinterpreted, it is nonetheless important as an interpretation of Kerouac's world from the outside looking in. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Fine condition.

        To Kill A Mockingbird.

London: Heinemann, 1960. First British edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, To Bobby from his devoted friend and admirer, Harper Lee March 14, 1962." Some foxing to the page edges, the inscription a little blurred, an excellent copy in the original dust jacket. A notarized letter from the recipient to whom the book is inscribed, detailing the circumstances of his receipt of the book from Harper Lee, is included. Examples with such warm inscriptions are rare. To Kill a Mockingbird became an immediate bestseller and won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The New Yorker declared it "skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious". It has gone on to become of the best-loved classics of all time and has been translated into more than forty languages selling more than forty million copies worldwide. Made into the Academy Award-winning film starring Gregory Peck. Named the best novel of the twentieth century by librarians across the country (Library Journal).
