THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH: A History of Nazi Germany

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Since its initial publication, this monumental study has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of Nazi Germany, providing unparalleled insight into the rise of Adolph Hitler, the events of World War II, the Holocaust, and postwar Germany. As a war correspondent and CBS broadcaster posted to Berlin, Shirer (1904-93) witnessed Europe's descent toward war first hand during the late 1930s, along with all the subsequent events of the era, from the fall of Poland to the Nuremberg trials. Signed and dated by Shirer on the title page. Original brown cloth binding, with black and gilt titles. Faint spot to the top edge, with a bit of wear to the corners and tips. The dust jacket is price-clipped and moderately edgeworn, with some creasing to the flaps; otherwise very good.

Typescript of "The Mirror in the Hall of Ebony"

      - Undated. A one-page prose poem, typed, and signed "Clark Ashton Smith/Auburn, California." This version of the prose poem differs in a number of particulars from the published version, which was included in The Abominations of Yondo (Arkham House, 1960) and Poems in Prose (Arkham House, 1965). Previously folded in thirds but now in a custom binder, bearing the bookplate of horror writer Stanley Wiater, from whose library this came. Fine, with a letter laid in to Wiater from Roy Squires, the noted science fiction collector and dealer, from whom Wiater purchased it. Squires' lengthy letter comments extensively on the appallingly high prices "being asked -- and paid -- for the more desirable Arkham House books," in 1972, and then goes on to justify the high price Wiater had just paid for the Clark Ashton Smith manuscript, and says that he knows of only four prose poem manuscripts by Clark Ashton Smith in existence -- this one; one that he himself still had; and two that Smith's widow had at that time. A rare typescript by one of the most important American horror writers of the 20th century, with a long, illuminating letter from one of the great collectors and dealers in the field, and from the library of a horror writer who has been a three-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award, given by the Horror Writers of America.         [Photo Album]: New England Family featuring Boy Scouts and the Portland to Montreal Pipeline

Maine, 1960. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 12". String-tied black cloth over paper boards with gilt decorations. Contains 208 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and 3 later color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Photo album is very good with detached but present pages, small tears, and spotting with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a New England family between 1902 and 1960. The album details a variety of family events including trips and vacations. The album is not in chronological order and begins with photos of a Boy Scout Troop from Dracut, Massachusetts between 1923 and 1924. These photos show the troop in group photos during their "1st Overnight Hike" in New Hampshire. The boys are seen cooking, starting fires, and hiking in candid snapshots. The next section documents a trip to Quebec in 1902 with photos of Montmorency Falls and the Quebec Zoo. In 1919 the family who kept the album bought a home in Dracut, Massachusetts. The photos document the changes they made to the house, including the addition of a sun porch, and the changing of seasons. One caption reads, "several large Baldwin apple trees in full bloom added to the beauty of the spring." The album shows the beauty of the New England landscape with photos of waterfalls, rock faces, and beaches as well as working on the family farm. One section of six photos shows the welding of the Portland to Montreal pipeline in 1941. The pipeline began as a response to the oil shortages Canada was facing in World War II. The decision was made to take crude oil from Portland, Maine to Montreal with a pipeline which measured approximately 236 miles. The photos here show the construction of the pipeline, digging ditches, laying pipe, and welding. One photo shows the joining of the pipe at "the line," the border between the U.S. and Canada. Another photo shows an aerial view of the pipe "looking North."The later part of the album is a collection of travel and family photos through the 1960s. Many of the photos are taken in the 1940s depicting picnics, campsites, and road travel, including a section of photos from a camping trip to Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, in September of 1942. These photos show people hiking up the Dudley Trail featuring snapshots of the Knife Edge peak and Chimney Pond. Later in the album the family visit Keene, New Hampshire and New York as well. The New York photos show Radio City's ice rink, Grant's tomb, and the library at Columbia, among other tourist sites. A few of the photos are in color from the 1960s and show an older couple posing together. An extensive New England family album featuring boy scouts and the homefront during World War II.

(San Francisco): Auerhahn. 1960. A collaboration by Burroughs' with his longtime friend, Brion Gysin. This copy is inscribed by Burroughs to Ted Berrigan in New York in "1953" -- we're guessing he meant 1963. Also signed by Gysin, who designed the cover and illustrated the book, in addition to providing his own texts. Printed by Dave Haselwood, who later reissued this title under his own imprint in 1967. This edition is estimated by the bibliographer at 1000 copies. Covers and four illustrations by Gysin. Very good in wrappers.
