Michelangelo Antonioni and Jeanne Moreau on the set of "La notte" (1961)

N.p.: N.p., 1960. Vintage oversize double weight borderless photograph from the 1961 film. A candid, on-the-set photograph of director Michelangelo Antonioni, cinematographer Gianni Di Venanzo, Jeanne Moreau, and others working on a balcony shot, part of the long party sequence that makes up the last third of the film. The second film in the trilogy that begins with "L'Avventura" (1960) and ends with "L'Eclisse" (1962). Shot on location in Milan. Probably no one has ever said it better than Bosley Crowther, who reviewed the film for the New York Times in 1961: "Too sensitive and subtle for apt description are [Antonioni's] pictorial fashionings of a social atmosphere, a rarefied intellectual climate, a psychologically stultifying milieu-and his haunting evocations within them of individual symbolisms and displays of mental and emotional aberrations. Even boredom is made interesting. There is, for instance, a sequence in which a sudden downpour turns a listless garden party into a riot of foolish revelry, exposing the lack of stimulation before nature takes a flagellating hand. Or there's a shot of the crumpled wife leaning against a glass wall looking out into the rain that tells in a flash of all her ennui, desolation and despair." In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9 x 12 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 678. Eureka Masters of Cinema 61.

        The Country Girls

London: Hutchinson & Co, 1960. First edition of Edna O'Brien's groundbreaking first novel, the story of two provincial girls in Dublin, described by O'Brien as "my experience of Ireland and my farewell to it." Banned for its sexual content, The Country Girls was burned in O'Brien's village churchyard by her family's parish priest, but is now considered a classic of modern Irish fiction. "The black underwear was Baba's idea. She said that we wouldn't have to wash it so often; and that it was useful if we ever had a street accident, or if men were trying to strip us in the backs of cars. Baba thought of all these things. I got black nylons too. I read somewhere that they were 'literary' and I had written one or two poems since I came to Dublin. I read them to Baba and she said they were nothing to the ones in mortuary cards." A near-fine copy, signed by O'Brien on the title page. Octavo, original black cloth, pale blue title block lettered in gilt, original clipped pictorial dust jacket. Lightest rubbing and edgewear to jacket, with a few tiny chips and closed tears.

RAHAB ET LES ESPIONS DE JERICHO

PARIGI, Mourlot Frères, 1960 - Litografia originale a colori impressa su carta vellina. Esemplare in edizione corrente perfettamente conservato. . 0

        The Subterraneans (Original Film Poster)

Los Angeles: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1960. Original one sheet poster for the 1960 film. From one perspective, a fairly one-dimensional representation--perhaps even a caricature--of Beat culture, but culturally fascinating in that it was made at the height of the Beat era, with A-list talent by a top studio, and, until Walter Salles' 2012 adaptation of "On the Road," was the only feature-length film ever made from a Kerouac novel. Kerouac was paid $15,000 by MGM for the rights to the book, and bought his first home with the proceeds, on Long Island. A film that rarely screened today, and has never been available on any kind of home viewing format. While its perspective on the actual Beat scene may be skewed or wildly misinterpreted, it is nonetheless important as an interpretation of Kerouac's world from the outside looking in. 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 cm), folded. Near Fine.

The View from the Fortieth Floor (Inscribed to Robert and Ethel Kennedy)

New York: William Sloane Associates, 1960. Second printing. INSCRIBED by the author to Robert Kennedy and his wife: "To Ethel and Bob Kennedy / With fond memories of the cold of Wisconsin and the rains of West Virginia. / Teddy / Theodore H. White." A wonderful association. White spent a great deal of 1959 and 1960 in the company of Robert Kennedy in the process of writing his nonfiction book, "The Making of the President: 1960," published the in 1961. The book famously documented John F. Kennedy's road to the presidency, and won the Pulitzer Prize. This novel, published the year before and making the rounds while White worked with the Kennedy clan, was given by him to the couple during their time together. "The View from the Fortieth Floor" is the story of a publisher's struggle to save his failing magazines without losing his honor and integrity. Very Good in a Good to Very Good dust jacket. Book has a slight lean, with cloth lightly faded and rubbed. Jacket is chipped at the corners and moderately soiled, with some silverfish damage at the bottom half of the front flap fold. Accompanying the book, as reference, is a non-inscribed later printing of "The Making of the Presidency: 1960," in Near Fine condition.

Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Slipcase in near fine condition with light wear. A pleasing, collectible copy of this photographic highspot. Irving Penn said befittingly of his work, "[s]ensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe" (1975). His photography is reverently held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both of which also hold collections of personal materials that relate to Penn's career.
