Autograph manuscript for an unidentified film score signed "B. Kaper"

1960 - Irregular format (352 x 305 mm). Five leaves of 12-stave onionskin paper with three pre-printed systems of four staves per page. Notated in lead pencil with timings in ink; pagination, signatures (one to head of each leaf), header "M 31," and other annotations in blue pencil; some corrections in red pencil. No date.A working manuscript, consisting of 56 continuous measures in score intended to accompany 2 minutes and 30 seconds of film. Stage directions in pencil interspersed: "F. I. after commercial - Joe starts to sneak - Joe reacts - Joe starts, gets up - Joe grabs shephard's [!Shepard's] neck - Shepard breaks loose - J. hits Shepard - finds rifle not loaded - J. finds ammunitio[n] - L. Shot highway car."Some corners of f.2-4 cut off; music not affected. We have not been able to identify the film for which Kaper composed the present music, but the direction at the beginning, "F.I. after commercial," indicates that the music was written for television, which limits the choices mostly to the two series Arrest and Trial (1963-1964) and The F.B.I. (1965-1974). The stage directions, mentioning the characters of "Joe" and "Shepard," and the header "M 31," may help to identify the exact episode.Kaper was a Polish-born American composer. He was educated at the Warsaw Conservatory and was active as composer and pianist in Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris before settling in Hollywood and joining the staff of MGM in 1940. His best work dates from the 1960s: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and Lord Jim (1965) reveal a pronounced flair for musical depiction of the sea and tropical landscapes. Kaper's dramatic score for the science fiction film Them! (1954) is largely regarded as one of the classics of horror movie music of the period. After 28 years and more than 100 scores for MGM, Kaper, like many Hollywood composers in the mid-1960s, found film work declining as pop music became more prevalent. As a result he turned to composing for television." Christopher Palmer and Randall D. Larson in Grove Music Online.

For Your Eyes Only: Five Secret Occasions in the Life of James Bond

London: Jonathan Cape, 1960 First edition, first printing of the eighth book in the James Bond series. Publisher's black cloth (Gilbert's A binding), with an illustration of an eye to the front board in white, spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, with an illustration of an eye peering through a peephole in a wooden door, lettered in red and black. Near fine, with former owner's name to the front pastedown and title page, a few faint spots, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket with bright spine, small nick to the spine head, some wear and rubbing to extremities, some faint soiling and light creasing to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a very good and pleasing copy, hard to find with the red spine lettering unfaded. Gilbert A8a 1.1. For Your Eyes Only is a collection of five short stories that marks a departure from Fleming's previous novel-length Bond tales. Specifically, this volume includes "From a View to a Kill," "For Your Eyes Only," "Quantum of Solace," "Risico," and "The Hildebrand Rarity." Interestingly, each of the stories has lent itself to one of the modern Bond films, whether in plot elements or title.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Jerry Lewis and Frank Tashlin on the set of "The Bellboy" (Oversize, double weight photograph)

N.p.: N.p., 1960. Borderless vintage double weight exclusive photograph of Jerry Lewis with his mentor, director Frank Tashlin. With photographer's rubber stamp on the verso reading: "Exclusive Photo By BUD FRAKER." Fraker's credits as a still photographer include Howard Hawks' "Twentieth Century" (1934), William Dieterle's film noir "Rope of Sand" (1944), and King Vidor's "War and Peace" (1956). But most importantly in this case, Fraker was the credit still photographer on Jerry Lewis' directorial debut, "The Bellboy," where this photo was almost certainly taken. Tashlin directed six notable comedies starring Lewis just prior to "The Bellboy," and had an enormous influence on Lewis' desire to be a director, as well as his directorial style.         Op. 23A]. In the Beginning Anthem for Tenor Solo, S.A.T.B. and Organ Words: St. John 1.1-14. Op. 23A. Autograph musical manuscript.

[ca 1960] - Unrecorded and unpublished. Not in the Grove works list. A Welsh composer, Hoddinott "graduated from University College, Cardiff, in 1949 and also studied privately in London with Arthur Benjamin. After being awarded the DMus in 1960 he consolidated his position as one of the leading British composers of his generation and in 1967 became professor of music at Cardiff. Hoddinott was particularly conscious that, he not being a pianist, his music did not derive from the Austro-Germanic sonata tradition but rather from the forms and textures of the Italian Baroque (his heritage as a violinist). Hoddinott followed Bartók. in favouring arch-like structures in which a strongly propelled dramatic curve governs the unfolding of the movement as a whole. His approach, however, never involved the Schoenbergian abandonment of tonality, which remains a cohesive force throughout Hoddinott's output." Geraint Lewis in Grove Music Online. Folio (350 x 260 mm). Signature of three bifolia. No watermark. Notated in black ink on 16-stave paper. 1f. (title; verso blank), 8, 1f. (blank) pp. In English. A fair copy. Systems have 4 staves throughout.Worn and somewhat soiled; occasional small stains; some offsetting; horizontal crease; lower outer corner torn off from p. 3, not affecting music.

        The Conscience of a Conservative

Shepherdsville, Kentucky: Victor Publishing Company, 1960. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with light rubbing. The Conscience of a Conservative is Barry Goldwater's classic which re-ignited the American conservative movement and made him a political star. The term "Goldwater conservative" became a household word. It influenced countless conservatives in the United States, helping to lay the foundation for the Reagan Revolution. "The book lays out, clearly and succinctly, [Goldwater's] uncompromising views. Goldwater held freedom as the highest value in American society: freedom from law, freedom from government, freedom from anybody else's vision but your own. You can argue with him on the particulars, but there's something compelling about his quintessentially American notion of self-reliance" (David Ulin, Los Angeles Times).

        To Kill a Mockingbird

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1960. First edition. Very Good +/Very Good. The book is in Very Good+ condition with a previous owner's neat signature on the front end paper, top edge dusty and a noticeable odor in the page-block. The dust jacket is Very Good with wear at the spine ends and along the folds, but without any large chips or tears. Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning coming of age novel, set in Maycomb, Alabama. An American classic, the novel took over two years for Lee to write- it was inspired by her own upbringing. (In fact, Lee's father was a lawyer who had defended black clients at the cost of his practice). Its production was not without difficulty and Lee once became so angry over the course of writing the novel that she tossed the manuscript out a window. The book has never been out of print, sold tens of millions of copies, and is required reading for the American adolescent. To Kill a Mockingbird was also adapted by Horton Foote into a 1963 film, directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck. The film would win three Oscars. "…skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious." (Contemporary New Yorker review). Very Good + in Very Good dust jacket.

Manuscript Journal of an Ornithologist on the Australian Flinders Islands 1960-62 with Dominic Serventy

Flinders Islands: Unpublished, 1960 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). pp 208 [with ephemera] 20x25cm, c 55,000 words. A highly detailed and revealing journal of a British naturalist and ornithologist who worked on the Flinders Islands between 1960-62 alongside the noted Australian ornithologist Dominic Serventy and his brother Vincent. Rook embarked from Southampton for Melbourne in September 1959, keeping a detailed record of all bird sightings en route with location and descriptions noted. Her Australian diary begins on 1st January 1960 by which time she records that she has seen 66 native bird species despite not doing 'as much bird-watching as I should since I came to Australia'. Early on she records a boat trip out to the islands in Port Philip Bay (Eastern, Western, Middle and Boatswain)setting up tents before observing the 'White faced Storm Petrel rookeries: 'The chicks were in various stages of growth, from newly hatched babies, pale lavender grey balls of fluff with tightly shut eyes... to stout well feathered youngsters with the adult face...' This introduces one of the central motifs of the journal which is Rook's work catching and 'banding' or tagging the birds. In February she records that her 'long talked of expedition to Phillip Island with Serventy eventually came off'. This trip began alongside the English naturalist Mary Gilham and several others with Rook's Fisher Island journal from 20th January 1961 with Rook working often alone out of the hut in Fisher Sound that Serventy had built. Taking stock, Rook notes that 'Flinders Is. came up to my expectations - more, as I have often been disillusioned since coming to Australia.' Starting on Lady Barron she meets 'Lew Bailey, the cop' and receives regular letters from 'Dom'inic (sometimes referred to as 'the Doc') 'telling us to look out for particular birds in particular burrows. There are boat trips out in the 'Tassie' to Cape Barren Island, detailing the school and its inhabitants: 'mostly halfcast Tasmanian aboriginals... a pathetic people, living as if in a reservation on a Government bounty'. But above all there are the routines of bird catching and ringing and the necessary work required to survive in a lonely, difficult environment with long periods of solo work on the station before Serventy arrives in March 1961 and 'Life's temp has definitely changed!.. Doc. pulling out, me holding, he banding, me recording. It's tiring work.. just toil, toil in the heat and dust'. Her verdict on Serventy as he leaves is 'I retained my great respect, a dedicated man, kind and an inspirer to tremendous efforts.' Moves to Babel island. The final third of the diary is spent at The Donga, Cassilius, New South Wales from September 1961 with a detailed list of 'Birds of Cassilis District' laid in. The journal concludes in Perth in December with Vincent Serventy and a final hymn of tribute to 'the true pioneers who had to battle with the heat and the flies without any hope of respite until they had won it for themselves. They were noble people.' Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this collection.

SRID PA'I 'KHOR LO: THE WHEEL OF EXISTENCE. A Hand-Painted Tibetan Thangka.

No place, likely Tibet or Nepal, no date, ca. [1960-70's].. Cloth,hand-painted color, 57 x 73 cm., minor surface scuff &. bends which mean a loss to some small lines in the painting,. over all, bright, solid work, painted with a fine hand.. A GENUINE TIBETAN THANGKA ON CLOTH A fine work, illustrated by a skilled & experienced painter. A very close example to ours is published in David Jackson TIBETAN THANGKA PAINTING: Methods and Materials, p.39. For a more exhaustive essay, see P. Kvaerne; THE BON RELIGION OF TIBET, p.143-146. This subject is standard for Tibetan Budd- hist iconography, in the "Wheel of Existence" or in Sanskrit bhavacakra, illustrating the six realms of birth, death and rebirth of sentient beings. This example is different from the Bonpos, which have their own version of the "Wheel of Existence." The basic lay-out of the this example is resting upon a great tiger, with an external circle showing the various postures of people as they join the "Wheel." The five central pie-cuts show the realms of birth, rebirth and death. The next semi-circle shows a group of human figures, half clothed, half naked. The center circle shows a bird, snake & boar. At the top central position shows the face of the tiger. There are two Buddhist icons in the upper corners & a pair of red clawed feet at the bottom. A stylized cloud pattern surrounds the whole work. Painted with much detail & skill, with gilt high-lights. A partial color scan can be sent by email.         Rabbit, Run (The First Rabbit Book)

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1960 - Very good in light blue paper-covered boards stramped in silver with a green cloth spine stamped in silver and gold. Very clean and tight throughout. With a touch of sun-fading to the outer edges of the boards. In a complete, first issue dust jacket with the 16-line blurb on the front inside flap and with the price of "$4.00" at the top of the flap. Photo of a young Updike on the rear inside flap. With light wear and chipping to the top and bottom of the spine ends and a touch of fading to the horizontal stripes at the bottom of the jacket spine. A handsome, collectible copy. Updike's most famous work is his Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom series (the novels Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit Is Rich; Rabbit At Rest; and the novella "Rabbit Remembered"), which chronicles Rabbit's life over the course of several decades, from young adulthood to his death. Both Rabbit Is Rich (1981) and Rabbit At Rest (1990) received the Pulitzer Prize. Updike is one of only three authors (the others were Booth Tarkington and William Faulkner) to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once. He published more than twenty novels and more than a dozen short story collections, as well as poetry, art criticism, literary criticism and children's books. Hundreds of his stories, reviews, and poems appeared in The New Yorker, starting in 1954. He also wrote regularly for The New York Review of Books.         TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS)

23 September 1960, Rutherford, NJ - Fine Typed Letter on personal stationery SIGNED as "Bill" to Wesleyan librarian Wayman Parker. In part: "'A Dream of Love' is a script that I have had to revise. A corrected version of it will appear in the next few months." Williams tells Parker that it would be useless for him to print this piece again as it will appear along with four other plays under the imprint of New Directions. He concludes on a personal note: "Your father was one of my closest friends during the last years of his life and your mother as her own end approached. They were people whom I love and admired, a breed of men close to my heart." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Enormous Signed Color Artwork

      - Original black and white poster, ca. 1960, with hand gouache coloring by the unidentified artist, signed in blue ink by Louis Armstrong, probably one of the largest signatures he ever signed and almost certainly the largest signed portrait of the great Satchmo in existence! Apparently obtained at the Morris Civic Theatre in South Bend, IN in 1963. In a large recent wood frame under UV-plexiglass. Some creases to the poster, but really in great shape overall. About 36 x 30 inches without the frame! The artwork is very likely the work of celebrated jazz illustrator David Stone Martin. His work graced many of the Verve, Mercury, Clef etc. covers of the 1950s and the present example, though apparently not from a published album, is highly reminiscent of those Martin designed for Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Count Basie.

L'Ingénieux Hidalgo Don Quichotte de la Manche.

Editions d'Art "Les Heures Claires", Paris 1960 - First French edition in four volumes with wonderful miniature colour illustrations to accompany the famous Spanish story about Hidalgo Don Quichotte of La Mancha and his extraordinary adventures. Small 4to, 19,7 x 24,2 cm, unbound pages in decorated soft covers, kept in red/black/gold ornamented card board sleeves and housed in likewise slip cases as originally issued. All volumes contain around more or less 220 pages with altogether 92 colour illustrations in-text by Henry Lemarié, engraved in wood and printed in a decorative framing on the pages. Limited edition to 2900 copies, this copy n°1130 is printed on "vélin de Rives" and needed 3500 wood-cuts (blocks) to achieve a perfect reproduction of the 92 illustrations, realised 1957-1960, by Raymond Jacquet, Dominique Darr and Jean Taricco, thereafter printed by Paul Massin and Roger Fontaine. All slip cases show light soiling on edges with minor splits and rubs to extremities. The edges of the card board sleeves, that form the spines of the slip cases, show some small rubs, tiny scratches and more or less light discolouring because of age. The soft covers of the books are clean with faint browning on 1st. panels, internal pages clean, bright and crisp, as near new. A complete set in very good condition. Shipping for the 4 vol. will demand higher charges. Ref : Monod "Livres illustrés" 2449. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
