        English as She is Spoke.

London: The Lion and Unicorn Press at the Royal College of Art,, 1960. With an Introduction by Paul Jennings. Oblong quarto. Original colour pictorial boards after Edward Bawden, titles to spine gilt. 31 colour illustrations, including 15 double-page, by Edward Bawden. Faint spotting to cloth, light scuffing to front board, endpapers a touch foxed, else contents bright and fresh. An excellent copy. First edition, limited to 200 copies, of which this is number 187. Beautifully illustrated with views of Portugal reproduced from Edward Bawden's sketch books, English as She is Spoke is an edited version of a 19th-century Portuguese-English phrase book, which unintentionally became a classic of humorous literature, commonly known as English as She is Spoke. In 1883 Mark Twain wrote the introduction of the first US edition of the conversational guide: "In this world of uncertainties, there is, at any rate, one thing which may be pretty confidently set down as a certainty: and that is, that this celebrated little phrase-book will never die while the English language lasts. Its delicious unconscious ridiculousness, and its enchanting naivete, as are supreme and unapproachable, in their way, as are Shakespeare's sublimities. Whatsoever is perfect in its kind, in literature, is imperishable: nobody can imitate it successfully, nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect, it must and will stand alone: its immortality is secure". A lovely copy of a scarce title.

        Large Original Photograph

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Beautiful large original photograph of the important American composer ca. 1960's, shown looking downwards against a blank background. Some creases; overall in very good condition. The photographer is unidentified. 16.5 x 12 inches (42 x 30.3 cm). From the collection of Manfred Ibel, "a young German art student and amateur flute player to whom Barber dedicated the piano concerto. Because from the early 1950s Menotti was drawn more and more into the public arena and the demands of his and Barber's professional lives limited their time together, Barber welcomed having an available companion with whom he could travel and talk about music and literature. What seemed to draw him to the charismatic Ibel was their 'mutual affinity for the spirit of German Romanticism and culture.' During the summer of 1959 they shared a house on Martha's Vineyard, and it was at this time Barber wrote the song for flute and piano, Elegy, that in 1962 he orchestrated for the second movement of his piano concerto."         Pavannes and Divagations

London: Peter Owen Limited, 1960. First U.K. Edition, First Printing. SIGNED by Ezra Pound on the title page and with Pound's hand-drawn gadfly figure above his controversial definition of religion on page 231: "Another of the numerous failures resulting from an attempt to popularize art." The book includes a selection of some of Pound's lesser-known prose and poetry, his possibly autobiographical "Indiscretions," a group of facetious verses, Pound's translations from the dialogues of Fontenelle, and more. 8vo, xi, 243 pages in blue cloth boards stamped in gold. A Very Good copy of the first U.K. edition, first printing. (A New Directions edition appeared in the U.S. two years earlier). The unclipped dust jacket is Very Good, showing a bit of soiling, slight tide mark to the spine tail, light edge wear, a small indent to the front panel and a tiny tear to the front panel's upper edge. They chose to lead by following the opportunity that chance, circumstance, technology and history had prepared for them" (Swenson, Grimwood & Alexander). NASA introduced the seven astronauts in Washington on April 9, 1959. Although the agency viewed Project Mercury's purpose as an experiment to determine whether humans could survive space travel, the seven men immediately became national heroes and were compared by TIME magazine to "Columbus, Magellan, Daniel Boone, and the Wright brothers" (TIME 1959).

"The first seven American astronauts were an admirable group of individuals chosen to sit at the apex of a pyramid of human effort. Lithographs of Marc Chagall

1960 - CAIN, Julien and SORLIER, Charles. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo, New York, Boston: André Sauret; George Braziller; Boston Book Shop; Crown Publishers, 1960-86. Six volumes. Folio, original beige cloth, original dust jackets each with original lithograph; Volume I with original cardboard slipcase. $19,000.Mixed first American and French editions of all six volumes in the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs, richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (including the dust jackets), inscribed in Volume II, "Marc Chagall, Vence. 1965," surrounded by a large drawing of a tree across the front free endpaper and part of the front pastedown."Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. (Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously.) All were issued separately over a period of 26 years and are very scarce as a complete set. All volumes published simultaneously in English and French. Volumes I and II also issued in a deluxe signed limited edition of only 100 and 150 copies. In this set, Volumes II is in French; all the other Volumes are in English. Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. See Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94. Owner signature in Volume II; owner blindstamp to title page in Volume III.Books fine, with light repair to one pastedown (Volume III), only very minor wear to bright dust jackets of the first four volumes. 'Dear Dr. Eddison, Please forgive a card in reply to your very pleasant letter of 20th. My secretary in London who does all the routine correspondence and tradesmen etc. has glandular fever, so that I am trying to cope with everything from up here besides trying to finish a book against time. It's very strange that this book should have produced several voices from the past, but perhaps even stranger that you should remember a patient from so long ago. I remember you well, [though I don't suppose either of us would be likely to recognise each other now], and preferred your visits to those of your senior, who [am I right?] took over from Dr. Beer. I lead a very peripatetic existence, but shall much hope to meet you again sometime when I am in the south. Meanwhile thank you again for your very kind letter. Sincerely Gavin Maxwell.' The card is in its original envelope with the post mark from Kyle, Ross-shire and dated 1st November, 1965. He wrote the book about how he brought an otter back from Iraq and raised it in Scotland. It sold more than a million copies and was made into a film starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna in 1969. The title Ring of Bright Water was taken from a poem by Kathleen Raine, who said in her autobiography that Maxwell had been the love of her life. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, it does not adhere to the book or to the dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A.
