Lithographs of Marc Chagall

      1960 - CAIN, Julien and SORLIER, Charles. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo, New York, Boston: André Sauret; George Braziller; Boston Book Shop; Crown Publishers, 1960-86. Six volumes. Folio, original beige cloth, original dust jackets each with original lithograph; Volume I with original cardboard slipcase. $19,000.Mixed first American and French editions of all six volumes in the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs, richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (including the dust jackets), inscribed in Volume II, "Marc Chagall, Vence. 1965," surrounded by a large drawing of a tree across the front free endpaper and part of the front pastedown."Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. (Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously.) All were issued separately over a period of 26 years and are very scarce as a complete set. All volumes published simultaneously in English and French. Volumes I and II also issued in a deluxe signed limited edition of only 100 and 150 copies. In this set, Volumes II is in French; all the other Volumes are in English. Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. See Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94. Owner signature in Volume II; owner blindstamp to title page in Volume III.Books fine, with light repair to one pastedown (Volume III), only very minor wear to bright dust jackets of the first four volumes. About-fine condition, most desirable inscribed with a sketch by Chagall. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Loosely inserted is a SIGNED hand written card from Gavin Maxwell's private residence on the northern west coast of Scotland - Sandaig, [Glenelg] by Kyle, Ross [before it was destroyed by fire], and dated October 29th, 1965. 'Dear Dr. Eddison, Please forgive a card in reply to your very pleasant letter of 20th. My secretary in London who does all the routine correspondence and tradesmen etc. has glandular fever, so that I am trying to cope with everything from up here besides trying to finish a book against time. It's very strange that this book should have produced several voices from the past, but perhaps even stranger that you should remember a patient from so long ago. I remember you well, [though I don't suppose either of us would be likely to recognise each other now], and preferred your visits to those of your senior, who [am I right?] took over from Dr. Beer. I lead a very peripatetic existence, but shall much hope to meet you again sometime when I am in the south. Meanwhile thank you again for your very kind letter. Sincerely Gavin Maxwell.' The card is in its original envelope with the post mark from Kyle, Ross-shire and dated 1st November, 1965. He wrote the book about how he brought an otter back from Iraq and raised it in Scotland. It sold more than a million copies and was made into a film starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna in 1969. The title Ring of Bright Water was taken from a poem by Kathleen Raine, who said in her autobiography that Maxwell had been the love of her life. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, it does not adhere to the book or to the dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A.

Very good. 1.5 linear feet approx. in total of various printed and holograph materials, largely organized into a series of some 20+ thick file folders.         Summer and Smoke; Final White Script, James Poe, November 15, 1960

      Wallis-Paramount-Hazen, (Hollywood) 1960 - 4to, 137pp typescript, with additional inserted pages. Original shooting script from the Paramount film adaptation of Williams's 1948 play. This is an intermediate state, with newer sections inserted on blue paper. There were subsequent revisions to the script and while we have been unable to compare with other versions, it is safe to say that there are discrepancies. Three names have been inked onto the title leaf, including that of the film's star Laurence Harvey, though it does not appear to be Harvey's hand. The other two names are of casting directors Eddie Morse and Bill Greenwald (crossed out), both longtime behind-the-scenes figures in numerous films, and neither of whom is credited with invovlement in this particular production. Summer and Smoke was released in 1961, directed by Peter Glenville from the script by James Poe and Meade Roberts -- both of whom worked with Williams on other adaptations as well, such as Cat on a Hot Tim Roof and The Rose Tattoo. The film received four Oscar nominations, including two in acting categories for Geraldine Page and Una Merkel. Few pencil marks, as from a member of production crew; names written on title leaf; genrally used, but fresh, brad-bound through three punch-holes, in plain black buckram spring binder.

        Production of commodites by means of commodities;

      Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,, 1960. Prelude to a critique of economic theory. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered gilt, with the dust jacket. A little fading to board edges; an excellent copy in the slightly faded jacket with some nicks and chips to extremities. First edition of Sraffa's attempt to perfect classical economics' theory of value, as originally developed by David Ricardo and others. "Production of Commodities is a peculiarly sparse book. The argument has been pared to the absolute minimum to sustain the propositions which Sraffa wishes to advance. Yet, the precision and logical elegance of the argument are 'the work of an artist working in the medium of economic theory' (P. Newman)" (John Eatwell in The New Palgrave).

        Moments Preserved / Eight Essays in photographs and words

      New York: Simon and Schuster, (1960) - Folio (325 × 240 mm), pp.184. 38 colour and 262 black-and-white photographs, introduction by Alexander Liberman, captions written with the assistance of Rosemary Blackmon. Plain endpapers. Beige cloth-covered boards, spine lettered in black. Printed dust-jacket. Photo-illustrated laminated paper-covered board slipcase; soiling to front at edges, tear from bump to rear at spine. A fine copy in an excellent slipcase. First edition. Moments Preserved provides an overview of Penn’s early career which began in earnest in 1943 when he was hired as assistant to Vogue art director Alexander Liberman. It was Liberman who sensed his talent as a photographer and encouraged him to pursue it as a career. Penn found that he could muster little enthusiasm for his ideas amongst Vogue’s distinguished roster of photographers, which at that time included Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, Cecil Beaton and George Platt Lynes, so Liberman suggested he try making the photographs himself. This resulted in one of his photographs being used on the cover of Vogue’s October 1, 1943 issue, the first time a still-life had been used on the cover in the magazine’s history.       PARIGI, AU PONT DES ARTS, 1960Tavola originale tratta da album a fogli sciolti, esemplare 47 / 175, in prima tiratura, composto da frontespizio tipografico, frontespizio litografato a colori su disegno di Picasso, foglio con testo di Jaime Sabartès, 11 tavole litografate a colori su carta avorio incise da Daniel Jacomet, 1 carta recante il colophon e cartella editoriale in tela beige recante il titolo in rosso sul piatto superiore. Il foglio è tratto da un pregevole suite che riproduce con il mezzo litografico, in formato originale, i dipinti su carta della serie La Joie de Vivre, eseguiti da Picasso ad Antibes sulla Costa Azzurra fra l'agosto e il settembre 1946. Le tavole recano la potente capacità di sintesi tipiche dello stile picassiano. I soggetti delle raffigurazioni sono principalmente due: le teste di fauno e la natura morta. Il fauno, colto talora nell'atteggiamento di suonare il flauto, è nella pittura di Picasso il simbolo di una condizione al tempo stesso umana e ferina, appagata e in pieno accordo con gli istinti della natura. Le nature morte sono composte di oggetti comuni, come un gruppo pesci o una caffettiera, che alludono ai semplici piaceri della vita. Le immagini sono risolte con segni energici, in nero e a colori, alternati o sovrapposti a campiture di colori piatti, sapientemente alternati fra loro. Esemplare in buono stato conservativo.

        Autograph manuscript for an unidentified film score signed "B. Kaper"

      1960. We have not been able to identify the film for which Kaper composed the present music, but the direction at the beginning, "F.I. after commercial," indicates that the music was written for television, which limits the choices mostly to the two series Arrest and Trial (1963-1964) and The F.B.I. (1965-1974). The stage directions, mentioning the characters of "Joe" and "Shepard," and the header "M 31," may help to identify the exact episode. Kaper was a Polish-born American composer. He was educated at the Warsaw Conservatory and was active as composer and pianist in Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris before settling in Hollywood and joining the staff of MGM in 1940... His best work dates from the 1960s: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and Lord Jim (1965) reveal a pronounced flair for musical depiction of the sea and tropical landscapes... Kaper's dramatic score for the science fiction film Them! (1954) is largely regarded as one of the classics of horror movie music of the period... After 28 years and more than 100 scores for MGM, Kaper, like many Hollywood composers in the mid-1960s, found film work declining as pop music became more prevalent. As a result he turned to composing for television." Christopher Palmer and Randall D. Larson in Grove Music Online.. Irregular format (352 x 305 mm). Five leaves of 12-stave onionskin paper with three pre-printed systems of four staves per page. Notated in lead pencil with timings in ink; pagination, signatures (one to head of each leaf), header "M 31," and other annotations in blue pencil; some corrections in red pencil. No date. A working manuscript, consisting of 56 continuous measures in score intended to accompany 2 minutes and 30 seconds of film. Stage directions in pencil interspersed: "F. I. after commercial - Joe starts to sneak - Joe reacts - Joe starts, gets up - Joe grabs shephard's [!Shepard's] neck - Shepard breaks loose - J. hits Shepard - finds rifle not loaded - J. finds ammunitio[n] - L. Shot highway car." Some corners of f.2-4 cut off; music not affected.

        [Op. 23A]. In the Beginning Anthem for Tenor Solo, S.A.T.B. and Organ Words: St. John 1.1-14... Op. 23A. Autograph musical manuscript

      1960. Unrecorded and unpublished. Not in the Grove works list. A Welsh composer, Hoddinott "graduated from University College, Cardiff, in 1949 and also studied privately in London with Arthur Benjamin... After being awarded the DMus in 1960 he consolidated his position as one of the leading British composers of his generation and in 1967 became professor of music at Cardiff... Hoddinott was particularly conscious that, he not being a pianist, his music did not derive from the Austro-Germanic sonata tradition but rather from the forms and textures of the Italian Baroque (his heritage as a violinist)... Hoddinott followed Bartók... in favouring arch-like structures in which a strongly propelled dramatic curve governs the unfolding of the movement as a whole... His approach, however, never involved the Schoenbergian abandonment of tonality, which remains a cohesive force throughout Hoddinott's output." Geraint Lewis in Grove Music Online.. Folio (350 x 260 mm). Signature of three bifolia. No watermark. Notated in black ink on 16-stave paper. 1f. (title; verso blank), 8, 1f. (blank) pp. In English. A fair copy. Systems have 4 staves throughout. Worn and somewhat soiled; occasional small stains; some offsetting; horizontal crease; lower outer corner torn off from p. 3, not affecting music.
