Can-Can (Original double weight photograph of Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, and Maurice Chevalier from the 1960 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1960. Vintage double weight, borderless photograph of Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, and Maurice Chevalier from the 1960 musical film, based on the 1953 Broadway musical by Abe Burrows with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his ASMP rubber stamp and holograph notations on the verso. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 9.5 x 6.5 inches (24 x 17 cm). Near Fine.

        Lettre tapuscrite à Sartre

1960. - 2 décembre 1960, 26,7x20,9cm, 5 feuillets in - 4.

Autograph musical manuscript for an unidentified film. Signed "B. Kaper."

1960. We have been unable to identify the film for which Kaper composed the present music, but the direction at the beginning, "F.I. after commercial," indicates that the music was written for television, which limits the choices mostly to the two series Arrest and Trial (1963-1964) and The F.B.I. (1965-1974). The stage directions, mentioning the characters of "Joe" and "Shepard," and the header "M 31," may help to identify the exact episode.Kaper, a Polish-born American composer, was educated at the Warsaw Conservatory and was active as composer and pianist in Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris before settling in Hollywood and joining the staff of MGM in 1940... His best work dates from the 1960s: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and Lord Jim (1965) reveal a pronounced flair for musical depiction of the sea and tropical landscapes... Kaper's dramatic score for the science fiction film Them! (1954) is largely regarded as one of the classics of horror movie music of the period... After 28 years and more than 100 scores for MGM, Kaper, like many Hollywood composers in the mid-1960s, found film work declining as pop music became more prevalent. As a result he turned to composing for television." Christopher Palmer and Randall D. Larson in Grove Music Online.. Irregular format (352 x 305 mm). Five leaves of 12-stave onionskin paper with three pre-printed systems of four staves per page. Notated in lead pencil with timings in ink; pagination, signatures (one to head of each leaf), header "M 31," and other annotations in blue pencil; some corrections in red pencil. Undated. A working manuscript, consisting of 56 continuous measures in score intended to accompany 2 minutes and 30 seconds of film. Stage directions in pencil interspersed: "F. I. after commercial - Joe starts to sneak - Joe reacts - Joe starts, gets up - Joe grabs shephard's [!Shepard's] neck - Shepard breaks loose - J. hits Shepard - finds rifle not loaded - J. finds ammunitio[n] - L. Shot highway car."Some corners of ff.2-4 lacking, not affecting notation.

Whaling Journals of Schooner "Mystic" and Bark "Greyhound," Atlantic Ocean, 1910 - 1918. Miscellaneous Manuscript Notes, Photographs, Original Typescript of the Book, "Captain Joe," with Corrections by Author, and a Signed Copy of Captain Joe."

Folio journal, about 300 pages of manuscript entries, plus nine pages of manuscript, five photographs, 314 pages of typescript, and a copy of the book "Captain Joe" NY. (1960) 271 pp. This is a wonderful assemblage documenting the latter days of the Atlantic sperm whale fishery. The two whaling journals - bound in a single volume - are supplemented by the manuscript material and by Captain Joe's book about this very period in the fishery's history. The first journal, that of the "Mystic," was kept by three successive captains. It gives the usual information, enhanced by accounts of desertions, deaths, stowaways, and labor troubles with the crew. The three captains were Edwards, Smith, and Joseph. Each kept the journal in his own hand. The parts of the voyage under Edwards and Joseph were reasonably successful and happy. Smith's turn as master was marked by unhappiness among the crew, desertions, and poor luck whaling. Smith, who was dying of stomach cancer, was relieved at Dominica. Edwards used whale stamps 69 times to mark chases and kills. Smith used none, and had little occasion to. Joseph used drawings of flukes, to which he added details of each kill. Overall, it was quite a successful voyage returning, according to Lund, 2983 barrels of sperm oil. Lund's record of this voyage does not include the turn taken by Smith as master. The "Greyhound" was a longer lived and better known ship. She was a key part of the Azorean whaling fleet, and the scene of much of Joe Gomes' adventures in his book "Captain Joe." This journal begins in August 1917 and runs through June 1918, when she returned to port with 750 sperm. It resumes in September of that year and continues until August 19, 1919, at which time she returned, again with 750 barrels of sperm oil. The captain for the voyages was A.C. Corvello, though the journal was kept by a mate - who refers, occasionally, to "the Capt." The writing is sloppy, but the action is good. Early in December during the second voyage, there was a mutiny aboard. While the Captain was at the mast head the cook and an an accomplice used axes to wound some of the crew. They were eventually subdued and later turned over to the U.S. consul at Barbados. Toward the end of the voyage the "Greyhound" was leaking so badly she nearly sank. This portion of the journal uses 48 whale stamps. Everything about these journals is substantiated in "Captain Joe." Gomes, in fact had sailed a few years earlier on the "Greyhound" with Captain Corvello, who was his brother-in-law. I had always assumed that whales were scarce in the closing days of the Atlantic sperm whale fishery, but both these journals and Gomes' book correct that impression - there were plenty of whales, and there was plenty of action. "Captain Joe" is written "as told to Don Sevrens", but Gomes' unique voice comes through strongly in the narrative, and it is probable that Gomes sat and talked, while Sevrens scribbled away. The manuscript corrections in the typescript of the book (carbon copies on onionskin paper) are strictly confined to factual details. Finally, the notes accompanying this lot are intriguing. Some of them, at least were written in the early 1970s. Others, in the same hand, give details and provide illustrations of, fittings and rigging aboard the "Greyhound." One note reads, "Use to sit on Mr. Howvitz (who appears in the book) son in laws lap. Named Mo for short for Morris I suppose. He had curly blond hair..." which sounds very much like a note Gomes might have kept for ghostwriter Sevrens. The lot

Archive of scripts for 56 episodes of "Peter Gunn" (Collection of 57 original screenplays from the 1958-1960 television show)

Los Angeles, CA: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1960. Archive of scripts and revision pages for 56 episodes of the hip private-eye detective television series "Peter Gunn." Copies belonging to screenwriter Lewis Reed, with his holograph name to the front wrapper of each episode. Included are screenplays for nearly half of the 114-episode run of the noir influenced television series starring the sophisticated, sharp-dressed, modern iazz-loving private eye Peter Gunn, played by Craig Stevens. Probably the only television show that ever rivaled the best film noir of the big screen, with minimalist dialogue and bleak, open-ended conclusions that challenge even the best of television today. Creator Blake Edwards, who later spawned both "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and the "Pink Panther" comedy film series starring Peter Sellers, would use the success of "Peter Gunn" to jump start his film career. Nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award. Composer Henry Mancini also won an Emmy and two Grammy Awards for the show's well-loved theme song, including the first Grammy ever awarded for Album of the Year. Scripts in Very Good to Near Fine condition. Mimeograph on eye-rest green or white stock. Many episodes also contain pink, blue, white, and yellow revision pages laid in at the rear.
