Whaling Journals of Schooner "Mystic" and Bark "Greyhound," Atlantic Ocean, 1910 - 1918. Miscellaneous Manuscript Notes, Photographs, Original Typescript of the Book, "Captain Joe," with Corrections by Author, and a Signed Copy of Captain Joe."

Folio journal, about 300 pages of manuscript entries, plus nine pages of manuscript, five photographs, 314 pages of typescript, and a copy of the book "Captain Joe" NY. (1960) 271 pp. This is a wonderful assemblage documenting the latter days of the Atlantic sperm whale fishery. The two whaling journals - bound in a single volume - are supplemented by the manuscript material and by Captain Joe's book about this very period in the fishery's history. The first journal, that of the "Mystic," was kept by three successive captains. It gives the usual information, enhanced by accounts of desertions, deaths, stowaways, and labor troubles with the crew. The three captains were Edwards, Smith, and Joseph. Each kept the journal in his own hand. The parts of the voyage under Edwards and Joseph were reasonably successful and happy. Smith's turn as master was marked by unhappiness among the crew, desertions, and poor luck whaling. Smith, who was dying of stomach cancer, was relieved at Dominica. Edwards used whale stamps 69 times to mark chases and kills. Smith used none, and had little occasion to. Joseph used drawings of flukes, to which he added details of each kill. Overall, it was quite a successful voyage returning, according to Lund, 2983 barrels of sperm oil. Lund's record of this voyage does not include the turn taken by Smith as master. The "Greyhound" was a longer lived and better known ship. She was a key part of the Azorean whaling fleet, and the scene of much of Joe Gomes' adventures in his book "Captain Joe." This journal begins in August 1917 and runs through June 1918, when she returned to port with 750 sperm. It resumes in September of that year and continues until August 19, 1919, at which time she returned, again with 750 barrels of sperm oil. The captain for the voyages was A.C. Corvello, though the journal was kept by a mate - who refers, occasionally, to "the Capt." The writing is sloppy, but the action is good. Early in December during the second voyage, there was a mutiny aboard. While the Captain was at the mast head the cook and an an accomplice used axes to wound some of the crew. They were eventually subdued and later turned over to the U.S. consul at Barbados. Toward the end of the voyage the "Greyhound" was leaking so badly she nearly sank. This portion of the journal uses 48 whale stamps. Everything about these journals is substantiated in "Captain Joe." Gomes, in fact had sailed a few years earlier on the "Greyhound" with Captain Corvello, who was his brother-in-law. I had always assumed that whales were scarce in the closing days of the Atlantic sperm whale fishery, but both these journals and Gomes' book correct that impression - there were plenty of whales, and there was plenty of action. "Captain Joe" is written "as told to Don Sevrens", but Gomes' unique voice comes through strongly in the narrative, and it is probable that Gomes sat and talked, while Sevrens scribbled away. The manuscript corrections in the typescript of the book (carbon copies on onionskin paper) are strictly confined to factual details. Finally, the notes accompanying this lot are intriguing. Some of them, at least were written in the early 1970s. Others, in the same hand, give details and provide illustrations of, fittings and rigging aboard the "Greyhound." One note reads, "Use to sit on Mr. Howvitz (who appears in the book) son in laws lap. Named Mo for short for Morris I suppose. He had curly blond hair..." which sounds very much like a note Gomes might have kept for ghostwriter Sevrens. The lot

Archive of scripts for 56 episodes of "Peter Gunn" (Collection of 57 original screenplays from the 1958-1960 television show)

Los Angeles, CA: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1960. Archive of scripts and revision pages for 56 episodes of the hip private-eye detective television series "Peter Gunn." Copies belonging to screenwriter Lewis Reed, with his holograph name to the front wrapper of each episode. Included are screenplays for nearly half of the 114-episode run of the noir influenced television series starring the sophisticated, sharp-dressed, modern iazz-loving private eye Peter Gunn, played by Craig Stevens. Probably the only television show that ever rivaled the best film noir of the big screen, with minimalist dialogue and bleak, open-ended conclusions that challenge even the best of television today. Creator Blake Edwards, who later spawned both "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and the "Pink Panther" comedy film series starring Peter Sellers, would use the success of "Peter Gunn" to jump start his film career. Nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award. Composer Henry Mancini also won an Emmy and two Grammy Awards for the show's well-loved theme song, including the first Grammy ever awarded for Album of the Year. Scripts in Very Good to Near Fine condition. Mimeograph on eye-rest green or white stock. Many episodes also contain pink, blue, white, and yellow revision pages laid in at the rear.

        English as She is Spoke.

London: The Lion and Unicorn Press at the Royal College of Art,, 1960. With an Introduction by Paul Jennings. Oblong quarto. Original colour pictorial boards after Edward Bawden, titles to spine gilt. 31 colour illustrations, including 15 double-page, by Edward Bawden. Faint spotting to cloth, light scuffing to front board, endpapers a touch foxed, else contents bright and fresh. An excellent copy. First edition, limited to 200 copies, of which this is number 187. Beautifully illustrated with views of Portugal reproduced from Edward Bawden's sketch books, English as She is Spoke is an edited version of a 19th-century Portuguese-English phrase book, which unintentionally became a classic of humorous literature, commonly known as English as She is Spoke. In 1883 Mark Twain wrote the introduction of the first US edition of the conversational guide: "In this world of uncertainties, there is, at any rate, one thing which may be pretty confidently set down as a certainty: and that is, that this celebrated little phrase-book will never die while the English language lasts. Its delicious unconscious ridiculousness, and its enchanting naivete, as are supreme and unapproachable, in their way, as are Shakespeare's sublimities. Whatsoever is perfect in its kind, in literature, is imperishable: nobody can imitate it successfully, nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect, it must and will stand alone: its immortality is secure". A lovely copy of a scarce title.

        Large Original Photograph

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Beautiful large original photograph of the important American composer ca. 1960's, shown looking downwards against a blank background. Some creases; overall in very good condition. The photographer is unidentified. 16.5 x 12 inches (42 x 30.3 cm). From the collection of Manfred Ibel, "a young German art student and amateur flute player to whom Barber dedicated the piano concerto. Because from the early 1950s Menotti was drawn more and more into the public arena and the demands of his and Barber's professional lives limited their time together, Barber welcomed having an available companion with whom he could travel and talk about music and literature. What seemed to draw him to the charismatic Ibel was their 'mutual affinity for the spirit of German Romanticism and culture.' During the summer of 1959 they shared a house on Martha's Vineyard, and it was at this time Barber wrote the song for flute and piano, Elegy, that in 1962 he orchestrated for the second movement of his piano concerto."         Pavannes and Divagations

London: Peter Owen Limited, 1960. First U.K. Edition, First Printing. SIGNED by Ezra Pound on the title page and with Pound's hand-drawn gadfly figure above his controversial definition of religion on page 231: "Another of the numerous failures resulting from an attempt to popularize art." The book includes a selection of some of Pound's lesser-known prose and poetry, his possibly autobiographical "Indiscretions," a group of facetious verses, Pound's translations from the dialogues of Fontenelle, and more. 8vo, xi, 243 pages in blue cloth boards stamped in gold. A Very Good copy of the first U.K. edition, first printing. (A New Directions edition appeared in the U.S. two years earlier). Light rubbing to boards, three corners bumped, slight indentations to the lower corners of the pages. The unclipped dust jacket is Very Good, showing a bit of soiling, slight tide mark to the spine tail, light edge wear, a small indent to the front panel and a tiny tear to the front panel's upper edge. Copies of the first U.K. edition, such as this one, are much more scarce than the first U.S. edition (1,000 copies issued, compared with 4,000 for the first U.S. edition). Signed copies of either edition are rarely encountered, especially ones like this with an original illustration hand-drawn by Pound. Gallup A74b. RARE SIGNED.

        I Generali.

      - 1960 circa. Tecnica mista policroma su carta pesante, cm 50 x 69,5 (il foglio), esemplare in prova d'artita "E. A." (a lapis in bs. a sn.), "bay" (a lapis in bs. a ds.). Soggetto caro all'Autore: nella composizione "I Generali" ostentano le medaglie al valore e nei loro loro volti sono le due facce del potere economico e militare, le due facce delle gerarchie che ordinano la società. Notevole prova ben marcata e in ottimo stato.
