        Jacqueline Kennedy Archive

Mansucripts telegrams carbons 1960 - I offer 38 documents that are a peep behind the curtain of running the JFK campaign in 1960. They came from the estate of Gladys Beauchamp Uhl, who served in the capacity as Jacqueline Kennedy's press secretary (but who did not make the transition to the White House). There are interesting telegrams regarding the birth of John Kennedy Jr., Mrs. Kennedy's wish to "buy American" for her inaugural gown, the rejection of the idea of a Kennedy-Nixon spouse debate, and such. There's also a multi-page script ("Jackie Kennedy TV Show") for a political t.v. spot for JFK. I can find almost nothing online relating to Mrs. Uhl's time with Mrs. Kennedy--except for this one newspaper clipping, which does clearly identify Mrs. Uhl's position as spokesman for Nov 28, 1960. A full image listing is reading and available upon request--just send me an email and I'll forward it. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Pomp and Circumstance

London: Heinemann,, 1960.. Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine white. With the dust jacket. Slight crease along spine with tiny nick to tail, an excellent copy in the jacket with tiny nicks to ends and corners, and the bottom edge of the rear panel with small tears and a crease. First edition, first impression, presentation copy of Coward's comic novel inscribed to the the actress Joyce Carey, "For Miss Joyce Carey with the cordial sentiments of The Author. Bessie - Bessie - Bessie". The meaning of this latter part may have something to do with the advent of Queen Elizabeth II into the novel's plot. Joyce Carey, OBE (1898-1993) is best known for her long professional and personal relationship with Noel Coward. In the midst of her stage career, which lasted 1916 to 1987, she rejoined Coward in 1942 to tour in his three newest plays, This Happy Breed, as Sylvia, Blithe Spirit, as Ruth, and Present Laughter, as Liz (a character based partly on Carey herself). After the war she played in Coward's new plays Quadrille and Nude with Violin (alongside Gielgud in London and Coward himself in New York). Her New York Times obituary noted that she "excelled in Coward plays" and that "her constructive comments helped shape" them.

        "Autobiography" [Author's Autograph Manuscript]

1960. Unpublished. 148 pp. on lined yellow paper. 1 vols. 14 x 8-1/2. Clean and legible. Very good. Unpublished. 148 pp. on lined yellow paper. 1 vols. 14 x 8-1/2. "The fishing around Lewiston when I was a boy was really excellent … Rock bass and sun fish were our usua; victim with an odd catfish or eel if we were lucky. … "My shooting in Lewiston was much the same as my fishing. Back before the turn of the century there were grouse and quail in that country until hell wouldn't hold 'em. And wild turkey. Plenty of wild turkey. … "Yet in all those years not once did I see a deer. What's more, I never even heard of a deer being shot and brought into town. Not until I moved to Williamsport did I see any deer. By that time each hunting season found bucks hanging in front of the taxidermists' shops and the butcher shops." The surviving manuscript autobiography of noted American angling author John Alden Knight, a highly personal and digressive first draft (in eight chapters, with some light revision) covering the early years of his life, from his birth in Lewiston, Pennsylvania, 30 December 1890, and family background (his father was a former soldier and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad) -- and of course recollections of early fishing and hunting experiences in chapters 1 and 4 -- up through his education at Cornell and training and service with the U.S. Naval Aviation corps during World War One. Never completed or published, but evidently undertaken at the suggestion of his publishers, this manuscript offers a glimpse into the formative years of John Alden Knight. Cf. Bruns, pp 260-261; Biscotti, p. 242; Hampton's Modern Angling Bibliography pp. 174-5

Fairy Tales from the British Isles. Retold by Amabel Williams-Ellis. Illustrated by Pauline Diana Baynes.

Blackie 1960 - FIRST EDITION, colour frontispiece and 7 further colour-printed plates, title-page with vignette printed in red and black, further illustrations by Baynes throughout text with initial headpiece printed in red and black, one or two faint spots to half-title, pp. 344, 8vo, original red cloth with Baynes design stamped in gilt to upper board, backstrip lettered in gilt, top edge red with a few faint spots to this and to fore-edge, colour-printed endpapers with Baynes illustration, Baynes dustjacket lightly toned in places, laminate lifting a little along joint-folds, very good. Signed to the half-title by the illustrator Pauline Baynes, whose illustrations here take on a role that puts one in mind of Tolkien's comment regarding her work for his 'Adventures of Tom Bombadil' - that they had 'reduced my text to a commentary on her drawings'. It is Baynes whose biography is given, beneath a photograph, on the rear flap of the dustjacket. Amusingly, on the half-title, Baynes has, above her vignette featuring a mouse, crossed through the word 'Fairy' and replaced with 'Mouse' - whimsically re-titling the book.
