Archive of New York Street Photography

New York: Walter Friedman, c. 1960s -1970s. Uniformly very good to near fine with light handling; housed in Friedman's cardboard box.. A collection of approximately 800 unique silver gelatin prints, most measure 5 x 7 inches, printed on various papers. The photographs were taken by Walter Friedman, a largely unknown New York City street photographer who was especially active in the 1960s and 70s. Most images are ink-stamped with his name and sometimes address to the verso; many also have numeric notations in pencil, perhaps suggesting an order not immediately recognizable by looking at the pictures. Friedman lived in the same NYC building as noted underground photographer Don Snyder. The archive was left with Snyder before Friedman's death from AIDS in the 1980s. An incredible overview of bygone New York, from the outer boroughs to Manhattan. Attracted mostly to the margins of the city, and to the city's marginal inhabitants, Friedman has assembled a cast of characters who could be comfortable in the pages of a Diane Arbus book. Like most vernacular archives, however, not every picture is a winner, and several are variants of the same image. That said, of the roughly 800 prints, about half qualify as images of significant merit, either aesthetically, or as important NYC documentation. New York city archives from the 60s and 70s are surprisingly uncommon; this is the first such offering we have handled.

Krönika (Chronique). Översättning av Herr Hammarskjöld / Originalet publicerat i Cahiers du Sud 46 (1959), s. 329-343.

Stencil i A4-format, [1] + 11 s. Klammerhft. Akademien 20.8.1960." I stencilens rubrik daterad 'New York, den 8 augusti 1960.

[Gebundene Ausgabe] Brad Meltzer Reihe/Serie: Panini Comics Literatur Comic Humor Manga Marvel Enzyklopädie Comics

Willkommen in New York! Reihe/Serie: Panini Comics Maße 170 x 260 mm Gewicht 2090 g Einbandart gebunden Literatur Comic Humor Manga Marvel Comics ISBN-10 3-86607-069-1 / 3866070691 ISBN-13 978-3-86607-069-1 / 9783866070691

To Bedlam and Part Way Back

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1960. Very Good/Very Good. Thrid printing. Very good with a couple dampstains and paper remnant adhered from the very good dustwrapper with corresponding dampstains, rubbing and with a few tiny nicks to the edges. The author's first book, a collection of poetry Inscribed: "For Marian Seldes with love Anne Sexton." Seldes was a Tony and Obie Award-winning actress who starred in the 1969 off-Broadway production of Anne Sexton's Mercy Street at The American Place Theatre in 1969. Sexton who was very involved with all aspects of the play and no actor more so than Seldes who played the lead character of Daisy. A nice association.

Mezhdunarodnyi iazyk Esperanto (grammatika, slovar' i kratkaia khrestomatiia) [The international language Esperanto (with grammar rules, a dictionary, and a short reader]

Odessa: self-published, 1960. Small octavo (15 × 10.5 cm). Original string-bound printed wrappers; 48, [2] pp. Photo-reproduced manuscript and printed text. Owner signature to front wrapper; else very good. An unrecorded Soviet samizdat publication from Odessa, Ukraine, by one of two surviving members of the Sovetrespublikara Esperantista Unio, or Union of Soviet Esperantists, which existed from 1921 to 1937. In the 1920-1930s, Esperanto had been a popular pastime encouraged by writers and scientists such as Maxim Gorky, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, and Anatoly Lunacharsky. But in the course of the Stalinist Repressions, the Esperanto activists were accused of espionage, their belongings confiscated, and the members of the Central Committee executed. Vershinin survived, ostensibly by sheer luck: he happened to be away from Moscow when the arrests were made. After the 20th Congress of the Communist Party, in February 1956, which resulted in Khrushchev's disavoval of the Stalinist period, the first tentative attempts were made to reestablish Esperanto culture in the Soviet Union. Vershinin, now settled in Odessa, published his introduction as a manuscript" ("na pravakh rukopisi"), evidently for use among a growing circle of local Esperantists. He presents the history and goals of the language, outlines basic grammar rules, and concludes with a bibliography of primers and textbooks. A small dictionary is also included, photo-copied from an earlier publication. The reader contains short anecdotes and proverbs; a text on Zamenhof; excerpts of works by Stalin, Lenin, and the Esperantist Ivo Lapenna; a history of Esperanto in Odessa, the "cradle of Esperanto"; an excerpt in Esperanto of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin translated by N. Nekrasov; a text by Nikita Khrushchev ("Defendu Pacoj!"), and, importantly, the addresses of Soviet Esperanto libraries and circles, in places such as Tbilisi and Kazan'. Not in KVK, OCLC. Not at the Russian State or National Library.

Maine 1960 - Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 12". String-tied black cloth over paper boards with gilt decorations. Contains 208 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and 3 later color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Photo album is very good with detached but present pages, small tears, and spotting with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a New England family between 1902 and 1960. The album details a variety of family events including trips and vacations. The album is not in chronological order and begins with photos of a Boy Scout Troop from Dracut, Massachusetts between 1923 and 1924. These photos show the troop in group photos during their "1st Overnight Hike" in New Hampshire. The boys are seen cooking, starting fires, and hiking in candid snapshots. The next section documents a trip to Quebec in 1902 with photos of Montmorency Falls and the Quebec Zoo. In 1919 the family who kept the album bought a home in Dracut, Massachusetts. The photos document the changes they made to the house, including the addition of a sun porch, and the changing of seasons. One caption reads, "several large Baldwin apple trees in full bloom added to the beauty of the spring." The album shows the beauty of the New England landscape with photos of waterfalls, rock faces, and beaches as well as working on the family farm. One section of six photos shows the welding of the Portland to Montreal pipeline in 1941. The pipeline began as a response to the oil shortages Canada was facing in World War II. The decision was made to take crude oil from Portland, Maine to Montreal with a pipeline which measured approximately 236 miles. The photos here show the construction of the pipeline, digging ditches, laying pipe, and welding. One photo shows the joining of the pipe at "the line," the border between the U.S. and Canada. Another photo shows an aerial view of the pipe "looking North."The later part of the album is a collection of travel and family photos through the 1960s. Many of the photos are taken in the 1940s depicting picnics, campsites, and road travel, including a section of photos from a camping trip to Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, in September of 1942. These photos show people hiking up the Dudley Trail featuring snapshots of the Knife Edge peak and Chimney Pond. Later in the album the family visit Keene, New Hampshire and New York as well. The New York photos show Radio City's ice rink, Grant's tomb, and the library at Columbia, among other tourist sites. A few of the photos are in color from the 1960s and show an older couple posing together. An extensive New England family album featuring boy scouts and the homefront during World War II.

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH: A History of Nazi Germany

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Since its initial publication, this monumental study has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of Nazi Germany, providing unparalleled insight into the rise of Adolph Hitler, the events of World War II, the Holocaust, and postwar Germany. Signed and dated by Shirer on the title page. Original brown cloth binding, with black and gilt titles. Faint spot to the top edge, with a bit of wear to the corners and tips.         Archive of New York Street Photography

New York: Walter Friedman c. 1960s -1970s - A collection of approximately 800 unique silver gelatin prints, most measure 5 x 7 inches, printed on various papers. Uniformly very good to near fine with light handling; housed in Friedman's cardboard box.
