        The Sot-Weed Factor

Doubleday, 1960 A fine first edition in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by the author on a bookplate, laid-in. 8vo. 806 pp. Quarter-bound in yellow cloth, blue boards. First Edition stated on copyright page and 1960 is on title page, as required for a first printing. Barth's breakthrough novel, a picaresque and bawdy evocation of Maryland in the late 17th Century. This book satirizes picaresque novels such as Tristrem Shandy and Tom Jones. Set in the early 18th century on the eastern shore of the colony of Maryland, the tale is told of an English poet named Ebenezer Cooke who is given the title "Poet Laureate of Maryland." The book takes its title from the grand poem that Cooke composes throughout the story, which was originally intended to sing the praises of Maryland, but ends up being a biting satire based on his disillusioning experiences. A large book that is usually in very worn condition, this is a beautiful copy. Illustrated dust jacket [design by Edward Gorey] with the $7.50 price present. Tiny 1/4 inch closed tear on front of jacket. Red pen mark on front free endpaper. Price of 90 cents written in small letters in corner of front free endpaper.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine.

Springtime in Western Australia. Travel Poster.

Ca. 1960.. Very good condition. Lovely large color lithograph travel poster depicting two children climbing a hillside in Western Australia. A young boy with walking stick helps a young girl in blue dress climbing a hillside strewn with exotic plants and flowers. The word "Springtime" in a 1960s influenced type font, with the dot on each letter "i" shown as a yellow flower; a bit like the title of the American situation comedy "I Dream of Jeannie". The title in blue and red against a bright yellow background. Western Australia has more wildflowers than any other place on the planet: more than 12,000 species, more than half of which are found only here. Wildflower season begins in June in the north and ends on the south coast in November; wildflowers are scattered across 2.5 million square kilometres of terrain. The publisher and date of publication not identified. Measures 39 3/4 x 26".

Bright gilt lettering on the spine. White end pages. Copyright page states First Published 1960. Contents are clean and tight with minimal ageing of page edges. No tears or staining. Dust Jacket: Bright and clear colours on the unclipped dust jacket which is protected by clear film. Spine colouring is really bright and minimally faded which is unusual for the age of this edition. Minimal wear on spine edges and corners with two tiny tears on spine. Front flap has description of For Your Eyes Only and reviews of Goldfinger. Price marked 15s net. Rear flap has description of Doctor No and The Diamond Smugglers. Rear of the dust jacket has five reviews of Ian Fleming’s earlier novels. Jacket design by Richard Chopping. For Your Eyes Only is a collection of five short stories with the main character of the 007 secret service agent, James Bond. Ian Fleming’s previous publications had all been complete novels and this collection marks a change in his writing format. The stories contained were primarily adaptions for television programmes which were never made, “From View To A Kill”, “For Your Eyes Only”, Quantum of Solace” and “Risico”, although of course feature films were made for the first three titles. The final story in the collection, “The Hildbrand Rarity” was a book that Fleming had drafted earlier in his career but he had never published before. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1960. First Edition (Revised). Hardcover. Very Good/VG+. First (revised) edition. Inscribed to Robert and Elodie Osborn on the ffe: "Elodie + Bob Osborn/ from Walker Evans / in hopes of getting an inscribed copy of 'The Vulgarians'/ Well, in affection and admiration/ anyway." Artist Robert Osborn, best known for his satirical illustrations, knew Evans from his contract work for Fortune magazine, where Evans was as an editor in the early 60s. The book to which Evans refers, The Vulgarians, a collection of Osborn drawings satirizing contemporary social mores, was published in 1960, the same year as the revised edition of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Thus, it is likely that Evans signed this copy in the year of publication. Osborn's wife, Elodie, was on the staff of MOMA in its early years and founded the traveling exhibition program there in the 1940s. Near fine in better than very good dustjacket.

        "Autobiography" [Author's Autograph Manuscript]

, 1960. 1960. Unpublished. 148 pp. on lined yellow paper. 1 vols. 14 x 8-1/2. Clean and legible. Very good. Unpublished. 148 pp. on lined yellow paper. 1 vols. 14 x 8-1/2. "The fishing around Lewiston when I was a boy was really excellent ... Rock bass and sun fish were our usua; victim with an odd catfish or eel if we were lucky. ..."My shooting in Lewiston was much the same as my fishing. Back before the turn of the century there were grouse and quail in that country until hell wouldn't hold 'em. And wild turkey. Plenty of wild turkey. ..."Yet in all those years not once did I see a deer. What's more, I never even heard of a deer being shot and brought into town. Not until I moved to Williamsport did I see any deer. By that time each hunting season found bucks hanging in front of the taxidermists' shops and the butcher shops." The surviving manuscript autobiography of noted American angling author John Alden Knight, a highly personal and digressive first draft (in eight chapters, with some light revision) covering the early years of his life, from his birth in Lewiston, Pennsylvania, 30 December 1890, and family background (his father was a former soldier and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad) -- and of course recollections of early fishing and hunting experiences in chapters 1 and 4 -- up through his education at Cornell and training and service with the U.S. Naval Aviation corps during World War One. Never completed or published, but evidently undertaken at the suggestion of his publishers, this manuscript offers a glimpse into the formative years of John Alden Knight. Cf.
