The box is worn but the books are nice, some wear but a decent set of facsimiles. 100 sets were produced with 50 individuals so 150 of each book were made.

Notes on Rock Paintings in Swaziland".

Mbabane, Swaziland: July,, 1960. Folio photograph album (324 x 198 mm). Contemporary green quarter cloth, grey paper sides in simulated crocodile-skin pattern. Typescript title and contents leaf, 37 colour photographs, each approximately 60 x 90 mm, corner-mounted on 12 black thick card leaves with manuscript headings in white (the first left blank with tipped-in typed slip, "photographs not yet available"), additional black and white photograph mounted to p. 14 verso, tissue guards, typed descriptive interleaves, rectos only, paginated 1 to 14 including 2 pp. introduction, printed folding map to rear, opening to 530 x 325 mm, with rock-painting sites marked in manuscript. Spine faded, a few very small rust-marks to backstrip, title toned, short closed tear along map fold, but overall in excellent condition. A well-presented, annotated photograph album "intended to serve as a preliminary record of rock painting sites in Swaziland ? [giving] the location of each site, directions for reaching it, and a short description of the paintings founded there, supplemented by photographs" (introduction). Of the ten sites Masson describes, only three, Nyonyane and two at "Lichfield", a site near the village of Ntjanini, had been previously recorded, the newly discovered sites being Ekuthantendi, "Foster's", Mphenjane, Ndlozane, Nkaba, Nsangweni and Ntungulu, all in the highveld of western Swaziland. This appears to be Masson's draft for an article, "Rock-Paintings in Swaziland", published in the South African Archaelogical Bulletin, Vol. 16, No. 64 (Dec. 1961), with expanded notes but lacking photographs. By comparison with similar paintings found in Drakensberg, Natal, Masson concluded in that article that "the Swaziland paintings form part of that great province of rock-paintings stretching from Southern Rhodesia to the Cape which is generally agreed to have been the work of Bushmen, or their forebears", working between 1750 and 1850 (p. 132). Masson is notably the author of the Encyclopaedia Britannica entry for Swaziland. In 1981 he published Prehistoric Swaziland: An Archaeological Outline, followed by The Archaeology of Swaziland: An Introduction, in 2011. Overall a handsome example of original archaeological fieldwork.

Thulathia Solo [Cello Version]. Autograph musical manuscript

      - 6 ff., notated in black ink on 12-stave Cameo Music Papers No. 5-3124, rectos only. Folio. Signed at the foot of each page and dated "Cairo 1960" on first and last pages. With copyright notices to foot of page 1: "2016 by Halim El-Dabh Music LLC," signed, and "1960 by C.F. Peters Corp 373 Park Ave. South New York, N.Y. 10016" A fair copy, including autograph note to page 3: "In whichever order, try to include as many notes within the time limits, including some in chords if so desired. Start and end with one of the heavy shaded notes." Slightly worn and creased; light red stain to upper left margin of pages 1 and 5. "Conceived in 1954, Thulathia was composed in 1960 and first performed at the Brookline Public Library in Brookline, Massachusetts. "Thulathia" means " a cello unification of three into one," i.e., "a trio in one." Grape clusters of the vine connect the energy. The concept is extended to include a cluster of grapes in a united grape vine. Instructions for playing the grapes is explained at the bottom of page 3." Notes provided by Halim El-Dabh.An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion. His career was launched in 1949 with a highly acclaimed performance of It is Dark and Damp on the Front (1948) at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. In 1950 he made his début as a solo drummer, under the direction of Stokowski, in the first performance of Tahmeela. Other works include Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962) and Lucifer (1975), commissioned by Martha Graham; Sound and Light of the Pyramids of Giza (1960), written for the Cultural Ministry of the Egyptian Government and performed daily at the pyramids; and New Pharaoh's Suite, written for the Cleveland Museum of Art to accompany a visiting Ethiopian exhibit from the Louvre (1996). Spectrum no.1 ?Symphonies in Sonic Vibration' (1955) and Leiyla and the Poet (1959) have been recorded." Denise A Seachrist in Grove Music Online. An early pioneer of electronic music, El-Dabh composed one of the earliest known works of tape music, or "musique concrète," in 1944, The Expression of Zaar. He also scored four ballets for Martha Graham: Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962), and Lucifer (1975)."El-Dabh is probably the best known composer of Arabic descent and his works are highly regarded in Egypt, where he is considered the foremost living composer among that nations's 'second generation' of contemporary composers."         The Colossus. Poems

Presentation copy, inscribed by Plath on the front free endpaper: "For Luke & Cynthia / with love - / Sylvia / April 13, 1961." A highly important association copy, rich in personal interest and history: E. Lucas (Luke) Myers, an aspiring writer from Tennessee, was intimately connected to Ted Hughes and Plath. Plath met Luke Myers at Cambridge, where she and Myers were studying, and admired his poetry and fiction. In her journal entry for February 25, 1956, she wrote: "I have learned something from E. Lucas Meyers (sic) although he does not know me and will never know I've learned it. His poetry is great, big, moving through technique and discipline to master it and bend it supple to his will. There is a brilliant joy, there, too, almost of an athlete, running, using all the divine flexions of his muscles in the act. Luke writes alone, much. He is serious about it; he does not talk much about it. This is the way." - Sylvia Plath, The Journals (London: Faber & Faber, 2000), p. 207. On March 3, Plath commented on Myers' fiction: "A chapter - story from Luke's novel arrived, badly typed, no margins, scrawled corrections, & badly proofread. But the droll humor, the atmosphere of London & country which seeps indefinably in through the indirect statement: all this is delicate & fine. The incidents & intrigues are something I could never dream up . . . Nothing so dull & obvious & central as love or sex or hate: but deft, oblique. As always, coming unexpectedly upon the good work of a friend or acquaintance, I itch to emulate, to sequester." - Plath, The Journals, p. 344. Luke Myers was a close friend of Ted Hughes, and it was outside the chicken coop behind the rectory of St. Botolph's Church that Myers rented from Mrs. Helen Hitchcock, the widow of a former rector, that Hughes used to pitch his tent on weekend visits to Cambridge University, from which he had graduated a year and a half before. St. Botolph's rectory "was a poets' haven, anarchic and unjudgmental", with Mrs. Hitchcock "turning a blind eye to the capers, bibilous and otherwise, of her undergraduate lodgers, of whom she was very fond." - Anne Stevenson, Bitter Fame: A Life of Sylvia Plath (London: Viking Penguin, 1989), p. 73. In February, 1956, a group of young Cambridge poets including Luke Myers, Ted Hughes, Daniel Huws and David Ross, among others, had just put together a little magazine appropriately named the St. Botolph's Review after Luke Myers' digs where they often gathered, and the launch party for the magazine (of which only one issue was published) was to be the occasion for the first fateful meeting between Plath and Hughes on Saturday, February 25, 1956. Plath, who had read some of the poetry by the St. Botolph's group - and two of whose own poems had been criticized recently by one of them, Daniel Huws, in the student magazine Chequer - purchased a copy of the Review on the morning of the party, and memorized several of Hughes's poems in anticipation of attending the party and meeting him. According to Plath's journal entry, after dancing for a while with a drunken, "satanic" Luke Myers, she ran into Hughes. Amid the crush of the party, "I started yelling again about his poems and quoting: 'most dear unscratchable diamond' and he yelled back, colossal, in a voice that should have come from a Pole, 'You like?' and asking me if I wanted brandy, and me yelling yes and backing into the next room . . . And then it came to the fact that I was all there, wasn't I, and I stamped and screamed yes, . . . and I was stamping and he was stamping on the floor, and then he kissed me bang smash on the mouth and ripped my hair band off, my lovely red hairband scarf which has weathered the sun and much love, and whose like I shall never again find, and my favorite silver earrings: hah, I shall keep, he barked. And when he kissed my neck I bit him long and hard on the cheek, and when we came out of the room, blood was running down his face." - Sylvia Plath, The Journals, pp. 211-212. As Diane Middleton put it: "Ted Hughes may not have been looking for a wife that night, but Sylvia Plath was looking for a husband, and Ted Hughes met her specifications exactly." - Diane Middleton, Her Husband: Hughes and Plath - A Marriage (London: Viking, 2003), p. 5. A month later in London, Hughes, not wanting "to declare his interest . . . asked Lucas Myers to play go-between. Myers could meet Plath for a drink somewhere, then just drop in on Hughes at the flat on Rugby Street, as if by chance. Myers admits in his memoir that he had taken a dislike to Plath, and that he agreed to this ploy reluctantly. He duly invited Plath to join him and Michael Boddy, another of Hughes's friends, at a pub called the Lamb, in Conduit Street - a poets' hangout - and shortly afterward suggested a visit to Hughes. It didn't take long to see that Hughes and Plath wanted to be alone." Later that night, at Plath's hotel, they spent - in Plath's words - a "sleepless holocaust night" together. - Middleton, p. 24. Soon after, Hughes left the job he had in London and moved to Cambridge, sharing a flat with Myers in Tenison Road, meeting Plath every day, and abruptly marrying her on Bloomsday, June 16, 1956 - secretly, with Plath's mother, Aurelia, the only family member at the wedding. In later years, Myers was witness to the difficulties in the marriage, and aware of its tenuous nature. In a measured attempt to explain "Sylvia's behavior and volte-faces between pleasantness and bitchiness" to Olwyn Hughes in a letter dated March 12, 1960, Myers wrote: "I have the feeling that it is best to think of Sylvia as being always pretty much as she was this weekend . . . Ted suffers a good deal more than he would ever indicate or admit, but he also loves her and I think it is best to assume he will stay with her. And she very evidently loves him in the self-interested and possessive way of which she is capable." [quoted by Stevenson, pp. 188-189] For her part, Plath clearly valued her own, and Ted Hughes's, friendship with Luke Myers. In 1961, anticipating the publication of her novel The Bell Jar, "Sylvia must have decided to protect herself, in view of the novel's public portrayal of her mother and of a devastating period in her own personal history, by publishing it under a pseudonym, Victoria Lucas. It was a name drawn from Ted's world: 'Victoria' after his favorite Yorkshire cousin, Victoria (Vicky) Farrar, and 'Lucas' after his friend Lucas Myers." - Stevenson, p. 227. Plath committed suicide at the age of 31 in February 1963. It is perhaps worth noting that the date of Plath's inscription to Lucas and Cynthia Myers is exactly the same as that of the inscription in the copy of The Colossus that Plath gave to the poet Theodore Roethke 8vo, original green cloth, dust jacket. Signs of use, but a very good copy in worn and soiled dust jacket.

The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre] The Clue of the New Pin (Original screenplay for the 1960 film)

Merton Park Studios, London 1960 - Shooting script for the 1960 British film noir, "Clue of the New Pin," later rebroadcast as Season 1, Episode 5 of the British series, "The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre." Based on Wallace's 1923 novel. Trasmere is thrifty and does not trust banks, so he keeps all of his money in his house. One day he turns up dead, in a completely locked vault, the only clue being a new pin.Wallace's novel was first adapted for a 1929 British film of the same name, directed by Arthur Maude. "What Have You Done to Solange?" (1972), a Giallo film directed by Massimo Dallamano, is loosely based on the novel. The "Edgar Wallace Mysteries" constituted a run of 47 films, all produced at Merton Park Studios for Anglo-Amalgamated between 1960 and 1965 as second features for distribution in British cinema houses. They were generally based on adaptations of original late Victorian/early twentieth century stories by Edgar Wallace, updated to reflect contemporary settings. The features were rebroadcast later the same year on the Edgar Wallace Mystery Theater, which ran in both the US and UK. The opening was a slowly revolving bust of Edgar Wallace to the accompaniment of the "Man of Mystery theme," written by Michael Carr, later recorded by The Shadows, and a No. 1 hit record in the UK. Titled self wrappers, noted as SHOOTING SCRIPT on the front wrapper, dated September 1960, with credits for screenwriter Mackie and novelist Wallace. Title page integral with front wrapper. 67 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 66. Mechanically reproduced. Very Good plus overall, bound with two silver brads.Spicer, p. 442.         La Dolce Vita (Original Italian Program for the 1960 film)

Rome: Riama Film, 1960. Original Program for the classic 1960 film. A striking and rare first-run program for what can easily be described as Fellini's most pivotal film, if not his finest. Unlike the more sentimental and abstract films that would follow, "La Dolce Vita" is an unflinching 7-day journey through 1960s Rome, with Mastroianni, a jaded journalist at the center of the story, constantly surrounded by revelry, beautiful women, and a beautiful city, but no semblance of happiness or love. This deluxe program reflects Fellini's use of stark black-and-white throughout the film, with nights that are noirish and daytime sequences that are blindingly, uncomfortably bright. Throughout are lonely women, photographers, crowds, clubs, parties, and general debauchery, with Mastroianni coming close enough to his humanity to touch it, but unable to do so. Illustrated, saddle-stitched card wrappers, 10.25 x 12.75 inches. Near Fine with a couple of tiny stains.

Typed Letter Signed about "My Heart Belongs to Daddy"

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An interesting typed letter signed from the great composer and lyricist to Albert "Doc" Sirmay, head of the music publisher Chappell and a close collaborator with Porter, advising Sirmay that he does not want the lyrics of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" changed "for political reasons." Dated August 20, 1960. Porter goes on to mention the Cole Porter Hour on TV as well as the musical Silk Stockings, but concludes: "it upset me when Mr. Elliot Norton [in the Boston Review] called my score 'the lamest of the Cole Porter musical comedies.'" 1 p.<br style="">Text, in full: "Dear Doctor: Please tell Jule Styne's office that I really don't want to have any of my lyrics in MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY changed for political reasons. I missed the Wednesday Cole Porter hour on TV as we didn't get that program. I subscribed a large sum of money for THE SOUND OF LIFE dinner. Thank you a lot for sending me the nice notice on Genevieve playing in SILK STOCKINGS but it upset me when Mr. Elliot Norton called my score 'the lamest of the Cole Porter musical comedies.' Love - Cole."<br style="">Originally written for the 1938 musical Leave It to Me! and performed by Mary Martin, the rather saucy song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" was adapted for Marilyn Monroe in the 1960 film Let's Make Love, with a changed introduction and additional verse. The most provocative line of the original song, "If I invite / a boy, some night / to dine on my fine finnan haddie," although sometimes misunderstood as "food and haddie," was not changed. Let's Make Love would be Monroe's last appearance in a musical film.<br style=""><br style="">Composer, arranger and editor Albert "Doc" Sirmay was the music director of the leading music publishing firm Chappell. According to Mark Eden Horowitz, Sirmay can be considered a collaborator with Porter: he "worked closely with [Chappell's] roster of composer, including Kern, Gershwin, and especially Porter. Many of the published piano-vocal scores of standards of the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s owe their elegance, clarity, and playability to Sirmay. He could convert a lead sheet to a richly accompanied song; he could wed melodies to accompaniment figures to make the totality of a song playable on the piano; he was a master of chord voicings. Many of the Porter music manuscripts in both the Library and Yale collections are in Sirmay's clear and flowing hand." ("Cole Porter's Papers," in A Cole Porter Companion, p. 310.)<br style="">
