The Dienst brothers were interested in the Beat Generation, concrete poetry, and the cut-up technique. Klaus-Peter knew Brion Gysin and would have been aware of the cut-up soon after its rediscovery. The Dienst brothers then discovered Burroughs through Gysin. In turn, Rhinozeros helped introduce the cut-up to a small German audience. Not surprisingly, Burroughs was a major presence in the magazine, but his influence spread throughout Germany during a renaissance in that countrys poetry and literature of the 1960s. COWARD, Noël.
London: Heinemann, 1959. Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine in silver. With the dust jacket. Spine of jacket lightly sunned, extremities slightly nicked and creased, touch of foxing to top edge. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The dedication copy, inscribed by Coward to Vivien Leigh on the front free endpaper: "Kindly see Dedication and oblige", and further inscribed by him below the printed dedication ("For Vivien with my love as always") "So there!" Loosely inserted is a Christmas card from Coward to Leigh (inscribed in red ink "Darling Dear love Dear Noely"), bearing the unforgettable "winged" image of Coward taken by Horst Tappe at Les Avants, Switzerland, in 1963 and carrying the witty seasonal greeting "Heureux Noël". Coward's play, based on Feydeau's farce, premiered in 1959 on Broadway and opened in July of that year in London at the Royal Court, with Vivien Leigh in the lead role, before transferring to the West End (New Theatre, now the Noël Coward Theatre). A superb association copy, dating to a difficult period in Leigh's life when Laurence Olivier had asked her for a legal separation and she turned to Coward for solace. "She felt she owed Noël her confidence in this matter. When the run [of Look After Lulu] ended, Noël was to take Vivien to Les Avants for Christmas and keep the 'charming newspaper' men and women at a friendly but firm arm's length" (Barry Day, ed., The Letters of Noël Coward, 2007, p. 650). Huxley, Elspeth
London: Chatto & Windus, 1959. First edition of the Huxley's autobiographical work based on her early life among white settlers on her father's coffee plantation in Kenya. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "To Dr. Phil Glover- with best wishes and in memory of a wonderful safari. Elspeth Huxley March 1959." The recipient and Huxley were close friends, as Huxley writes about Glover in her work Forks and Hope An African Notebook. Dr. Phil Glover spent over fifty years in East Africa in an assortment of senior roles including the Chief Zoologist of the Kenya Department of Veterinary Services. He wrote numerous highly regarded papers in his field as well as edited the East African Wildlife Journal. A very nice association. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Rosemary Seligman. Elspeth Huxley prolifically wrote thirty books, but she is best known for her lyrical books The Flame Trees of Thika and The Mottled Lizard. Both are based on her experiences growing up in a coffee farm in Colonial Kenya. Her husband, Gervas Huxley was related to both Thomas and Aldous Huxley (Lownie, 2006). A year after the publication of The Flame Trees of Thika, Huxley was appointed an independent member of the Advisory Commission for the Review of the Constitution of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. She was an advocate of colonialism early in life and later called for independence for African countries (Ibid.). In the 1960s, she served as a correspondent for the National Review magazine. LEE, Laurie
London: The Hogarth Press,, 1959. With drawings by John Ward. Octavo. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket and pink wraparound band. Frontispiece drawing and illustrations to text by John Ward. A couple of marks to edges of text block; a lovely copy in the bright jacket with the scarce wraparound band. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the poet and anthologist Leonard Clark (1905–1981) on the front free endpaper, "Inscribed for Leonard Clark who did surgery on it. With best wishes from Laurie Lee. February 1960". With Clark's bookplate to the front pastedown. Clark was the editor of The Saturday Book and a long-time back-room-boy in English publishing. From the inscription it would seem that he edited this very book in some way. This is the only literary association copy of Lee's masterpiece we have seen.

LEE, Laurie
London: The Hogarth Press, 1959. London: The Hogarth Press,, 1959. With drawings by John Ward. Octavo. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece drawing and illustrations to text by John Ward. A very good copy in the jacket with a little rubbing to extremities and slightly toned spine panel. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Ronnie & Christina — who give writers wings — from the author, with affection". The recipients were Christina Foyle, owner of Foyle's bookshop, and Ronald, her husband, with this copy bearing Foyle's bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown. Laid-in is an autograph letter from the author to Ronnie, dated 23 February 1972 and on Lee's headed paper. The letter acknowledges receipt of two "Rosies", and encloses by return the "Beeleigh copy, duly inscribed" — a reference to Beeleigh Abbey, Christina's house. Lee writes "I was most touched that you took the trouble to send me the Burning Piano — and most impressed that you found one (they were all impounded in Gloucestershire)", alluding to the passage on p. 272, which described "a fire at the piano-works almost every year, it seemed to be a good way of balancing the books". Lee was sued for libel, and the passage removed from subsequent editions. Accompanying the book are two Christmas cards from the author to the couple, one of which features a printed excerpt from Cider with Rosie, the other an illustration by John Ward, also from the book. A nice literary association.
