ESPADA, Frank
New York: Self-published, 1959. First Edition. Spiral-bound oblong quarto. Handmade book by photographer Frank Espada documenting opening day at the rebuilt Aqueduct racetrack in 1959. One of two known copies; the other was given to the track and is likely lost. SIGNED and dated by Espada with his cover design and layout. Illustrated with 21 vintage silver gelatin photographs of the daily vagaries of the track: from the post parade, to punters huddled over Racing Forms, to a rails-eye shot of the finish line. Espada did not have access to a dark room; these photographs were printed by his friend Dave Heath, and have Heath's trademark brooding tonality. In fact, many of the images - especially those of people - bear an eerie similarity to Heath's Dialogue With Solitude. Without pulling punches, this remarkable book is the best document I have ever seen of the race track: combining the beauty, poetry, and pathos of the experience in one slim volume. If Charles Bukowski were alive, I have no doubt he would buy this book (or get someone to buy it for him)! A little light wear; near fine in heavy spiral-bound wrappers. Bottlik, József
Size: A1 1 Sheet (cca. 55 x 84 cm). Television New era in home culture is an original 1959 vintage Hungarian advertising poster designed by Jozsef Bottlik Commercial poster that aimed to introduce a new era in home life with the television The first television devices were produced in 1955 in Hungary The price was incredibly high around five thousand Hungarian forints while an average salary for an engineer was around five hundred forints Trading of the television begun in 1956 the Hungarian Television was first broadcasting in 1957 This poster was created in 1959 and it was a very modern composition The first part of the decade was characterised by the compulsory norms of Socialist Realism socialist content in a realist portrayal This was the key to the extensive propaganda which was the only tool of the political dictatory to brainwash the population The situation changed after 1956 and while Socialist Realism continued to exist it ceased to have an artificially created predominant position on the art scene A new form of political dictatorship incepted instead of forcibly taking over every aspect of an individual 39 s life it rather attempted to attract them with consumer goods and thus avoiding them paying attention to political matters Housing interior decoration furnitures and household appliances became the keys of happiness Propaganda was not over it existed in a new form This poster is a perfect example of these changes The composition is created by the former art deco designer J oacute zsef Bottlik which can be recognized in the portrayal of the two figures in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eisenhower, Dwight D
1959. Rare original token of gratitude card signed by the 34th president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, from the collection of his trusted military aid Robert Schulz. Measuring 4.25 by 2.5 inches with the Presidential Seal in gilt the card reads, 'A small token of my gratitude for your helpfulness' signed, "Dwight D. Eisenhower." The card is displayed in a lucite block atop a wooden base with a silver medallion and button depicting Eisenhower and Konrad Adenauer. Accompanied by the miniature 49-star American flag which measures 11 inches in height mounted on a base bearing the text of the American Pledge of Allegiance that President Eisenhower took with him on all foreign trips between 1959 and 1960. With Schulz's son note of provenance, "Oral history: My father told me that this flag went with Ike on all foreign trips." The 49-star American flag was adopted on July 4, 1959 when Alaska joined the Union, and was replaced with the 50-star flag a year later upon Hawaii's admittance to statehood. The present miniature flag traveled with Eisenhower during this period which included his August through September tour of Europe which brought him to West Germany, England, and France where he held conferences with Queen Elizabeth II, Charles de Gaulle, Harold Macmillan, and Konrad Adenauer. In near fine condition. A rare and unique piece of Americana. Army general Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower served as the 34th President of the United States from 1953 until 1961. He served as a five-star general in the United States Army during World War II and as Supreme Commander of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Debord, Guy and Asger Jorn
Internationale Situationniste, 1959. First edition. 4to, [64] pp, offset lithograph in color, bound in unprinted white card wraps and housed in the original sandpaper dust jacket. Mémoires was the second book collaboration between Jorn, Debord and the printing company Permild & Rosengreen. Often anecdotally attributed to Debord, the sandpaper dust jacket was actually the suggestion of the printer, V. O. Permild, who should be considered an author of the final work. Jorn had requested an unconventional material for the binding, one that would inflict some physical mark on the reader. Permild suggested sandpaper and Jorn acquiesced, marvelling at the damage such a cover would inflict not just on neighboring books, but also upon the mahogany tables of the bourgeois. There is a certain irony in the fact that sandpaper is as much a symbol of finishing as of destruction, and would likely have been used to finish the very mahogany table that Jorn mentions. The most potent book associated with the Situationist International, and a landmark in the history of book design. Sandpaper faintly rubbed, with a couple small, faint spots to front panel, else fine, and scarce thus. [Attributes: First Edition]

WILLIAM FAULKNER
1959. Page ends slightly age-darkened; few very small chips & somewhat longer tears (with nothing missing) in glassine; cloth & gold lettering Brand New. Published by Random House (New York 1959). First edition. Of a limited issue of 500 numbered copies, this is copy #125. Hardcover, bound in black cloth, without dust jacket but in clear glassine wrapper (as issued). This copy is not signed. The page ends are slightly age-darkened, and there a few very small chips and somewhat longer tears (with nothing missing) in the glassine, the cloth and gold lettering Brand New. Overall like new. Either unread or read very carefully. Following The Hamlet and The Town, The Mansion completes Faulkner's great trilogy of the Snopes family in the mythical county of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. Beginning with the murder of Jack Houston and ending with the murder of Flem Snopes, it traces the downfall of the indomitable post-bellum family that within a generation had seized control of the town of Jefferson. "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." Robert Penn Warren "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of our classi … [Click Below for Full Description]

While it is likely that a small number of these documents were produced, we cannot trace another copy. - Very good, hol … [Click Below for Full Description]
