« Kack Kerouac creating a poem with Lew Welchand Albert Saijo, at Mc Darrah's New-York apartement, December 10, 1959 ». Carroll (Lewis)
Albert Bonniers, 1959. FIRST SWEDISH EDITION, frontispiece and 8 full-page illustrations by Tove Jansson as well as numerous tail-piece decorations, pp. 52, crown 8vo, original wrappers with Jansson illustrations to both covers (that to front colour-printed), toned to backstrip and borders, very good. A wonderful edition of Carroll's poem, with Jansson's illustrations - full of her characteristically sombre and quizzical expressions - capturing its mood perfectly. A sparkling copy, and scarce thus - the illustrations were used for an English language version by the Tate Gallery in 2012, but this is their original publication.

Thomas B HESS
New York: George Braziller, 1959. Small 4to. Original pictorial wraps. Some rubbing and soil. Light edgewear. Very good. INSCRIBED by de Kooning to front endpaper: "To Frances and Sid - / What a wonderful / time we / had -- / Good Winter / Love / Bill." The first monograph published on de Kooning, inscribed by the artist to prominent art collectors Sydney and Francis Lewis of Virginia. While various limited editions from the artist are relatively common, books genuinely inscribed by de Kooning are scarce, esp. so with so warm an inscription. Much of the Lewis' collection was dispersed by Christie's in 2000, at which time the auction house has this to say about the couple: "Since the 1960s, Sydney and Frances Lewis of Richmond, VA, have been in the forefront of national and international collectors of Post-War painting and sculpture and late 19th and 20th century decorative arts. Their keen knowledge resulting from astute observation, incessant research, and an unquenchable appetite and love for art enabled the Lewises to build an incredible personal collection ranging from Emile Gallé to Willem de Kooning to Gaetano Pesce, all of the highest quality.".

WILLIAM FAULKNER
Page ends slightly age-darkened; few very small chips & somewhat longer tears (with nothing missing) in glassine; cloth & gold lettering Brand New. Published by Random House (New York 1959). First edition. Of a limited issue of 500 numbered copies, this is copy #125. Hardcover, bound in black cloth, without dust jacket but in clear glassine wrapper (as issued). This copy is not signed. The page ends are slightly age-darkened, and there a few very small chips and somewhat longer tears (with nothing missing) in the glassine, the cloth and gold lettering Brand New. Overall like new. Either unread or read very carefully. Following The Hamlet and The Town, The Mansion completes Faulkner's great trilogy of the Snopes family in the mythical county of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. Beginning with the murder of Jack Houston and ending with the murder of Flem Snopes, it traces the downfall of the indomitable post-bellum family that within a generation had seized control of the town of Jefferson. "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." Robert Penn Warren "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of our classics." R … [Click Below for Full Description]

Corman, Roger (director)
1959. Vintage original 41 x 27" (103 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster, USA Susan Cabot, Anthony Eisley, Barboura Morris, dir: Roger Corman; Filmgroup. One of the best remembered of the early Roger Corman horror/sci-fi thrillers. Story of a woman cosmetic tycoon who cannot accept her natural process of getting older and develops from wasp enzymes her own formula to keep from aging. Of course her formula, when over-used, turns her into a murderous wasp. The low budget special effects may now look tacky, but the film retains a vintage charm and certain horror. The poster art does this in abundance. The graphics and tag lines are classic. This would be the last feature film for star Susan Cabot. Roger Corman would soon turn his attention to Edgar Allan Poe, and begin filming in color, on larger budgets -- but this is one of various of his early movies, all shot in a few days on minute budgets, and comprising a variety of genres (science-fiction, horror, rock and roll, juvenile delinquents, you name it, pretty much anything that could play in a drive-in cinema back in the 50s). These early Corman films all have a zest for movie making which, more than half a century later, is still palpable. Poster is on linen, but had the slightest bit of wear at fold lines which have imperceptibly been touched up and the poster displays magnificently. FINE

Pierre Etaix
1959. Dimensions: 33½ x 22¾ in. (85 x 56.5 cm.) Backed on linen An exceptionally rare poster for the first Polish release of the 1958 classic French slapstick comedy Mon Oncle written, directed, produced by and starring Jacques Tati as the eccentric hero Monsieur Hulot. Featuring the same superb Pierre Etaix artwork as the French release poster with it's bold silhouette design, this is the only copy of this poster we have ever seen come up for sale. Mon Oncle's satire of post-war consumer society was popular even in the US, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Very good (B)Backed on linen. Prior to backing this poster had one horizontal fold line, a staple hole to each upper corner and old tape marks to lower edge verso. Backing has smoothed out the fold and expert restoration to the tape marks at lower edge, which extends into the lower credit line, has improved the appearance of the poster ready for display. Light rippling to linen. Image and colours otherwise excellent.

L KARMAZSIN
[Budapest]: 1959. Condition: Very good +. 4to. Gray bubble-grain cloth album, with design gilt-stamped to front board. Thirteen leaves, mimeographed rectos only with introductory text, followed by seventeen thick card leaves with mounted photographic prints (6.75" by 5") depicting sketches of fountains, one photo montage of fountains, and a pasted-in card of color swatches (which has detached); lastly sixteen fold-out blueprints bound in at rear, most about 23" by 23", several smaller. Overall, about near fine. Some trivial, small tears; light toning; but overall sharp, clean throughout. Proposal for school water fountain designs submitted to the Hungarian Ministry of Culture by Imparmüvészeti Vállalat, a ceramics design firm. Though not a part of the USSR, Hungary was an Eastern Bloc state under deep Soviet influence, its socialist People's Republic government (1949-1989) concurrent with most of the Soviet Union. In keeping with typical Soviet design, the water fountains exhibit a late (and striking) constructivist influence. One photograph depicts a circle of seven fountains, and others designs show circular fountain bowls with multiple spouts; perhaps with the intent of creating a communal water-drinking experience for students. A fascinating intersection of design, education, and politics.

Bernhard, Thomas.
(Frankfurt a.M.), Fischer 1959. 8°. 58(1). Opbd. Roth, Philip
The Paris Review, New York, 1959. First appearance of Philip Roth's first book, "Goodbye, Columbus." Signed twice by Roth, once on the cover and also inside the volume where the story appears. Also signed by Peter Matthiessen, co-founder and editor of the Paris Review. In near fine condition. Goodbye, Columbus is the story of Neil Klugman and pretty, spirited Brenda Patimkin, he of poor Newark, she of suburban Short Hills, who meet one summer break and dive into an affair that is as much about social class and suspicion as it is about love. The novella is accompanied by five short stories that range in tone from the iconoclastic to the astonishingly tender and that illuminate the subterranean conflicts between parents and children and friends and neighbors in the American Jewish diaspora. Saul Bellow wrote upon review of Goodbye, Columbus, "Unlike those of us who come howling into the world, blind and bare, Mr. Roth appears with nails, hair, teeth, speaking coherently. He is skilled, witty, energetic and performs like a virtuoso." It was the basis for the 1969 film starring Richard Benjamin and Ali MacGraw, directed by Larry Peerce. The screenplay, by Arnold Schulman, won the Writers Guild of America Award. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

THWAITES, REUBEN GOLD [EDITED BY].

Clark Co., Glendale, California. Red cloth, gilt stamping on cover and spine, introduction, illustrated, maps, appendices, index. A nice reprint of this superbly - edited work. Of Thwaites thorough effort to prepare the journals for presentation, the famous historian Frederick Jackson Turner said, "[Thwaites] met and conquered difficulties in a way that proved him an editor of the very first rank. He ferreted out from their concealment missing documents necessary to complete the journals; deciphered the difficult writing and spelling of these historic frontiersmen.mastered the problem of correlating and printing the several journals of the expedition; drew upon all of his resources of typographic and editorial skill to give an absolutely faithful reproduction of the originals."
