Frank, Robert and Alfred Leslie (film); Jack Kerouac (text)
Grove Press / Evergreen Books. First Edition, a trade softcover original (no hardcover equivalent issued), issued in conjunction with the release of the 1959 film. With a stunning grouping of signatures, all in the same ink and very likely executed on the same day: the film's director Robert Frank, and the three beat generation heavies who appear as themselves in the film: Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, and Gregory Corso. A hermetically sealed group of autographs, linking the filmmaker and the entirety of the film's literary cast with its paper counterpart. Perfect bound wrappers, Very Good plus with light rubbing, else no notable wear. In a custom quarter leather clamshell box and folding chemise. [Attributes: First Edition]

Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket in very good condition. Book in like new, uncirculated condition. William S. Burroughs Naked Lunch Book Grove Press, New York (©1959; published in 1962). Hardcover with jacket. (First American edition; first hardcover edition). 255 Pages. First Edition / First Printing / First State. States "First Printing" on the copyright page with no further printings listed. Has black top stain on pages (no other page edge has stain). Black cloth spine with gold lettering and charcoal boards. First state jacket with price ($6.00; present). No zip code in address on lower rear of jacket. No roman numeral on lower spine near back panel of jacket. Extremely rare, very early first printing has "Production Dept. Working Copy Do Not Remove - Grove Press Inc. Production Dept." stamped in red ink (rubber stamped) on the first blank page before the title page. As such, this "Working Copy" has never been sold before (I am the second owner, and received it as a gift about 20 years ago from the ex-wife of someone who worked at Grove at the time the book was published). The book has been protected in a case on a shelf since I received it, taken out periodically for a glance or to check its condition. I don't know how many copies of Naked Lunch with a Grove Production Dept. stamp exist, but my guess is that there are not very many. The condition of the book is very fine. The dust jacket has bold color that shows no fading, but does have some edge and corner wear. The spine is also clean with just a little wear at the bottom. The top of the spine on the jacket has the … [Click Below for Full Description]

L KARMAZSIN
[Budapest]: 1959. Condition: Very good +. 4to. Gray bubble-grain cloth album, with design gilt-stamped to front board. Thirteen leaves, mimeographed rectos only with introductory text, followed by seventeen thick card leaves with mounted photographic prints (6.75" by 5") depicting sketches of fountains, one photo montage of fountains, and a pasted-in card of color swatches (which has detached); lastly sixteen fold-out blueprints bound in at rear, most about 23" by 23", several smaller. Overall, about near fine. Some trivial, small tears; light toning; but overall sharp, clean throughout. Proposal for school water fountain designs submitted to the Hungarian Ministry of Culture by Imparmüvészeti Vállalat, a ceramics design firm. Though not a part of the USSR, Hungary was an Eastern Bloc state under deep Soviet influence, its socialist People's Republic government (1949-1989) concurrent with most of the Soviet Union. In keeping with typical Soviet design, the water fountains exhibit a late (and striking) constructivist influence. One photograph depicts a circle of seven fountains, and others designs show circular fountain bowls with multiple spouts; perhaps with the intent of creating a communal water-drinking experience for students. A fascinating intersection of design, education, and politics.

Bob KAUFMAN
Beat Publishing Co. Condition: Near fine. 4to. Side-stapled yellow cover wraps. Mimeographed rectos only. Minor wear. Old, shallow crease through center of issue, unobtrusive. Interior bright and clean. Very good. The brainchild of Allen Ginsberg, Bob Kaufman, and John Kelly, BEATITUDE was originally conceived as a weekly newsletter for the North Beach literary scene, publishing the first issue in April 1959. Though it quickly abandoned that schedule, the little mag soon became an important outlet for beat literature and is now one of the defining publications of the early mimeo revolution. As Bob Kaufman put it: "Designed to extoll beauty and promote the beatific life among the various mendicants, neo-existentialists, christs, poets, painters, musicians, and other inhabitants and observers of North Beach." Printed out of the Bread and Wine Mission run by Congregationalist minister Pierre Delattre (who also published in Beatitude), the magazine included the work of its founders, as well as Jack Kerouac, Michael McClure, and numerous other notable San Francisco poets and writers. This issue features Ginsberg's poem "Afternoon Seattle," plus a haiku and short selection from OLD ANGEL MIDNIGHT by Kerouac. Both Ginsberg and Kerouac appear on the title page under the "Bored of Directours" (as "A. Ginsboig" and "J. Korewax" respectively). Other contributors include Peter Orlovsky, Chester Anderson, Claire Caudel, and Ruth Weiss. An early issue from a quintessential beat publication. LIMBOUR, Georges. André BEAUDIN, illustrator.
[Fequet et Baudier for] Galerie Louise Leiris, [ 1959]., Paris. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR, with an original watercolour for the frontispiece signed by Beaudin. The text is by the Surrealist prose writer Limbour and is illustrated by Beaudin-a significant, if lesser-known, Parisian artist whose graphic abstraction evolved from Cubism through contact with Paul Éluard and collaborations with Robert Delaunay. He took inspiration from elements of daily life and reduced them to a symbolic essence, still recognisable as an object or figure. The etchings and watercolour here are fine examples of his sensitive use of colour and imaginative depiction of the human form. The book was issued by the Galerie Louise Leiris, an influential gallery founded in 1920 by Daniel Kahnweiler, who was forced to flee Paris under the occupation after turning the gallery over to his Catholic sister-in-law, Louise Leris. Number 27 of 100 on Rives (total edition 110). 4to (276 × 230 mm), pp. 48, [8], plus an original watercolour and including 7 lithograph plates in colour. Loose and uncut in original wrappers. Blue chemise and slipcase. A fine copy. From the books of the late Martin Stone (1946-2016). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

LEE, Laurie.
London: The Hogarth Press, 1959. Octavo. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. A very good copy in the jacket with a little rubbing to extremities and slightly toned spine panel. Frontispiece drawing and illustrations to text by John Ward. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Ronnie & Christina — who give writers wings — from the author, with affection". The recipients were Christina Foyle, owner of Foyle's bookshop, and Ronald, her husband, with this copy bearing Foyle's bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown. Laid-in is an autograph letter from the author to Ronnie, dated 23 February 1972 and on Lee's headed paper. The letter acknowledges receipt of two "Rosies", and encloses by return the "Beeleigh copy, duly inscribed" — a reference to Beeleigh Abbey, Christina's house. Lee writes "I was most touched that you took the trouble to send me the Burning Piano — and most impressed that you found one (they were all impounded in Gloucestershire)", alluding to the passage on p. 272, which described "a fire at the piano-works almost every year, it seemed to be a good way of balancing the books". Lee was sued for libel, and the passage removed from subsequent editions. Accompanying the book are two Christmas cards from the author to the couple, one of which features a printed excerpt from Cider with Rosie, the other an illustration by John Ward, also from the book. A nice literary association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Alison Lurie - SIGNED, LIMITED, DEDICATED TO JOHN FOWLES with enclosures
Privately Printed Munich 1959, 1959 UNIQUE COPY of this rare book, the first publication of Alison Lurie. A rare unification of three great talents, Edward Gorey, John Fowles, and Alison Lurie. It is in its original (rather delicate and discoloured) glassine cover, with a letter from the author to John Fowles, her dedication to John Fowles on the book's half title, and a card with the signed autograph of Edward Gorey, who did the cover illustration. One of only 300 copies, signed and inscribed by author: 'For John Fowles, with admiration, Alison Lurie' on the half title page. The letter to Fowles is loosely enclosed, and is signed 'Alison Bishop'. Alison Lurie was married at the time to Jonathan Peale Bishop. The Edward Gorey signature is on a small sheet of card, and is also loose laid. Wonderful associative copy of what is a very rare publication. V. R. Lang was the founder of the 'Poets Theater' in Cambridge, MA. Alison Lurie was an early member, along with poet James Merrill and Edward Gorey. This is Pulitzer Prize winner Lurie's first book. Internally clean, sound text block. Glassine DJ has some age related toning and chipping along edges, which is usual with all copies, and I have retained it because it is as issued. At least the glassine has done its job, because the stiff card wrap is near fine. Language: eng Language: eng. Signed by Author(s). Limited Edition. Soft cover. Near Fine.

Stout, Rex
London: 1959. Very good. STOUT, REX & WILLIAM RANDELL. Original Painting Artwork by Signed by Artist William Randell for the Dust Jacket of the Rex Stout - Nero Wolfe Novel - Crime and Again - Accompanied by a First Edition in Jacket of the Finished Book. London: Crime Club / Collins, 1959. This painting on artboard was created and signed by William Randell for the First British Edition of this classic Nero Wolfe mystery novel written by Rex Stout. The painting, itself, measures approximately 6 1/2 inches wide by 8 3/4 inches tall, matted to an overall size of 9 3/4 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Of the Nero Wolfe dust jackets, this is a superior one in that it actually depicts, Nero Wolfe, which was rarely the case with the Rex Stout books published during his lifetime. The great detective is depicted in black sitting in chair caught up in intense thought with the artwork having a blue background. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

My love, Dad, Echandens, 1960 ». Po … [Click Below for Full Description]
