Frankl, Viktor E
Beacon Press, Boston, 1959. First edition in English of Frankl's classic work, which was later titled Man's Search For Meaning in 1962. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Viktor Frankl on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Translated by Ilse Lasch. Preface by Gordon Allport. Originally published in German, in 1946 under the name Ein Psycholog erlecbt das konzentrationslager. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Signed first editions are exceptionally rare and desirable. Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful. At the time of Frankl's death, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey for the Library of Congress that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found Man's Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America. Kripke, Saul A
Association for Symbolic Logic, Inc March 1959, New Haven, New Jersey. First edition of Volume 24 of The Journal of Symbolic which includes the first appearance of Kripke's landmark paper, A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic. Inscribed by Saul A. Kripke on the first page of his theorem, "For Thorid Dahlquist, Saul Kripke." In this paper, Kripke both proves the formal completeness of modal logic (supplemented by first-order quantifiers and the sign of equality) and "create[s] a semantics, now called Kripke semantics" (Hurley, Logic: The Essentials, 217). "Of great importance is the paper "Semantical Analysis of Modal Logic I" where normal systems are treated. It is here that Kripke fully develops the analogy with the algebraic results of Jonsson and Tarski and proves completeness and decidability for propositional systems T, S4, S5, and B (the Brouwersche system), which is here introduced It is in this paper that two crucial generalizations of the model theory are introduced" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Octavo, original wrappers as issued. In near fine condition. Scarce, especially signed and inscribed. American philosopher and logician Saul Kripke has made some of the most important and original contributions to the field of formal mathematical logic, particularly modal logic which extends classical logic to include modalities. Kripke wrote his first completeness theorem, A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic at the age of 17, before graduating high school, and had it published a year later. His Holiness The Dalai Lama
Government of the Dalai Lama, 1959. First edition of this important document, which details the historical relationship between Tibet and China from the 7th century to the 1950s and presents arguments supporting Tibet's claim for sovereignty. Octavo, original printed flexible board wrappers, with the title and date printed in red letters. Boldly signed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the front panel. Table of contents and 63 pages of text. In 1959 the Dalai Lama sought support from the U.S. and other nations to recognize their government in exile and to bring their case for Tibetan sovereignty and against Chinese aggression before the United Nations. It is necessary to distinguish between two 1959 publications under the same title. The more common (today) appears to be an octavo volume of 49 pages, which several sources attribute to the Central Electric Press in Delhi, India. [The British Library and Harvard University each has a copy in that smaller format; WorldCat details 10 locations of the 49 p. 8vo edition, under two OCLC numbers]. Our publication, a mimeographic duplication from a document produced on a typewriter, printed on rectos only of quarto sized sheets, has 63 leaves and an un-numbered first leaf ["Table of Contents"]. Technical limitations mean that our publication in quarto mimeographed format, is both more fragile by nature and less likely to have been issued in a large number of copies. Considering that the 14th Dalai Lama spent all but the first 90 days of 1959 residing in exile in Dharamshala, in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, it is … [Click Below for Full Description]

It was first published in France in 1958, and the following year in the United States. The photographs were notable for their distanced view of both high and low strata of American society. The book as a whole created a complicated portrait of the period that was viewed as skeptical of contemporary values and evocative of ubiquitous loneliness. Travers, Pamela Lyndon
London, 1959. 2 pp. 12mo. On 50 Smith Street, Chelsea stationery; with original transmittal envelope. 2 pp. 12mo. On Mary Poppins, and being read to aloud. A warm response from Travers to an admirer in Brooklyn. In part: "...thank you for your lovely letter about Mary Poppins. You ask if she could not return after her final farewell. But she did return, in a sense, in the next books Mary Poppins in the Park ... I hope that more stories along those lines may be possible. I am glad you have given me the idea not to let anybody write about Mary Poppins after I depart ... but, in a way, I don't think anybody would really try to, do you? Yes, the Little Golden Books were dreadful.... Do you know that the books have been translated into all European languages, also into Japanese and Hebrew and they have just pierced a veil of the iron curtain by being done into Polish. So many, many children all over the world must have read them. I must say that makes me very happy ... it was beautiful of [your daughter] to press her nose into the page and say 'I want to go right into the book!' I must put that in a story ... Oh, there is nothing like having children, and the early years of childhood are so wonderful ... Being read aloud to, and doing the reading aloud, are two halves of one of the sweetest of all experiences..."

Algot Stenbery
Designed by Algot Stenbery in 1959, this poster entices travelers to fly Pan Am to Central America. The image features a characteristic open-air Central American marketplace, a potential destination for tourists. Markets serve as a central location to buy and sell goods, but also a place to socialize with the community. In this image, fruits, vegetables, and other goods are being sold from woven baskets. Farther back in the image, market-goers are seen lounging and conversing on blankets under make-shift tents. This scene is set against a background of what appears to be Mayan glyphs. The 1950’s and early 60’s saw a rapid growth in the routes serviced by the commercial airlines and Pan American was one of those prominent carriers. Pan Am pioneered intercontinental flying, and was the largest international air carrier based in the United States from 1927 until the company was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1991. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Algot Stenbery (1902—1983) studied at the Hartford Art School, primarily working in gouache and oils. He is known for his book illustrations, including the New British version of "Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. He was an instructor of drawing and painting at Cooper Union from 1933-40, and the American Artists School from 1940-42. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters. Width: 28 Height: 41.25
