Karsh, Yousuf
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1959. Publisher's full black cloth, silver lettering on spine and cover. This is review copy, with the review slip, a letter from the publisher, and the two-page description of the book's production laid in. Also included is the extremely rare "shelf-box" which was offered by the publisher as an optional extra. "It is constructed of plywood, is virtually indestructible, but is bound and stamped to add to the quality of the volume it protects. We are anxious that the public should not compare it with a cardboard "slip case", of course." The portraits in this book are produced by sheet-fed gravure, making them of the highest quality. Yousuf Karsh has portrayed more celebrated men and women than any other photographer of our time. An astonishing range of celebrities has come before the Karsh lens, and with remarkable frequency it has been the Karsh portrait that has become the definitive record of the famous personality, the one through which the world has been brought face to face with greatness, the one that will be best remembered in future years. In this single volume are gathered together ninety-six of Karsh's most memorable photographic portraits, selected by the artist who created them. Royalty, church leaders, statesmen, businessmen, artists, musicians, actors, playwrights, scientists, authors -- all are unforgettably recorded in these pages. Queen Elizabeth II, Pope Pius XII and Pope John XXIII, Churchill, Eisenhower, Nehru, Einstein, Schweitzer, Hemingway, Picasso, Casals, and many more. The volume is in perfect, pristine conditi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Goldfinger is the seventh novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, first published in the UK by Jonathan Cape on 23 March 1959. Goldfinger originally bore the title The Richest Man in the World and was written in January and February 1958. The story centers on the investigation by MI6 operative James Bond into the gold smuggling activities of Auric Goldfinger, who is also suspected by MI6 of being connected to SMERSH, the Soviet counter-intelligence organization. As well as establishing the background to the smuggling operation, Bond uncovers a much larger plot, with Goldfinger planning to steal the gold reserves of the United States from Fort Knox. LIMBOUR, Georges. André BEAUDIN, illustrator.
Paris: [Fequet et Baudier for] Galerie Louise Leiris, [, 1959. 4to (276 × 230 mm), pp. 48, [8], plus an original watercolour and including 7 lithograph plates in colour. Loose and uncut in original wrappers. Blue chemise and slipcase. A fine copy. From the books of the late Martin Stone (1946-2016). FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR, with an original watercolour for the frontispiece signed by Beaudin. The text is by the Surrealist prose writer Limbour and is illustrated by Beaudin--a significant, if lesser-known, Parisian artist whose graphic abstraction evolved from Cubism through contact with Paul Éluard and collaborations with Robert Delaunay. He took inspiration from elements of daily life and reduced them to a symbolic essence, still recognisable as an object or figure. The etchings and watercolour here are fine examples of his sensitive use of colour and imaginative depiction of the human form. The book was issued by the Galerie Louise Leiris, an influential gallery founded in 1920 by Daniel Kahnweiler, who was forced to flee Paris under the occupation after turning the gallery over to his Catholic sister-in-law, Louise Leris. Number 27 of 100 on Rives (total edition 110). Rarre, and no US copy listed in Worldcat.

Schimmelpenninck, Mary Anne.
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1959. Mary Anne Schimmelpenninck (1778-1856) was the daughter of the Birmingham Quaker and gunmaker, Samuel Galton, a member of the Lunar Society, at whose house such intellectuals as Joseph Priestley, Samuel Parr, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, and Erasmus Darwin were frequent visitors. In 1805, she wrote a pamphlet on the education of the poor, against her motherÕs advice. A year later, she married a Bristol shipping merchant of Dutch descent, and became active in local charities and educational projects. Her interest in the Port Royal group, which flourished in France at the end of the seventeenth century, was prompted by some books sent to her by Hannah More. Her other works include the artistic treatise The Theory and Classification of Beauty and Deformity (1815). Between 1854-1856, SchimmelpenninckÕs niece Christiana C. Hankin took down from dictation the formerÕs autobiography; the memoir portion of the work, which occupies the second volume, was compiled with the utmost pains in order to Òprocure the materials with a view to continue the detail from the period when the autobiography of her early years concludesÓ (p. vi). SchimmelpenninckÕs personal correspondence was used as a source and provides the reader with both her character and her views on a variety of topics. Two volumes, octavo. ix, [1, blank], 345, [1, colophon]; ix, [1,blank], 275, [1, colophon] pp. Frontisportrait. Pastedowns imprinted with ads. Robert Frank
Grove Press. Cloth. A solid, very respectable copy of the 1959 1st American edition of this towering achievement in post-War documentary photography. Tight and Near Fine to Fine (legitimately approaching Fine) in its dark cloth, with bright, completely unrubbed gilt-titling along the spine and an immaculate interior, with no writing or other markings of any kind. The dustjacket, while presentable and crisp, does show a number of pieces of clear tape carefully applied along the edges as reinforcement. Where there's a closed tear at a panel edge, there's likely a discreet piece of scotch tape to keep it from opening. Robert Frank
New York: Grove Press. Beyond this, there's a tiny bit of chipping to the rear panel's lower-edge and at the foot of the spine. In spite of all this, we grade the pictorial dustjacket a solid VG-. Oblong octavo, the Introduction by a prophetic Jack Kerouac, who was at the height of his powers as this book was originally being introduced to an American audience. New York, Simon & Schuster, 1959. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A stunning copy, by far the best we've had and possibly the best we've seen. An index card signed by Bloch is laid in. A classic work of horror fiction, and the basis for the fine Hitchcock film. A lovely copy, a highlight of modern first edition collecting and an rare opportunity. The block is toned, as is common. There is a little rubbing to the jacket at the spine tips, and the boards are a touch toned. One neat, tiny closed tear to the fold - barely visible. Cover art by Tony Palladino [7439, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. If you'd like this service on cheaper items please utilise the expedited shipping. Philadelphia/New York: Chilton Company, Book Division, (c.1959). Philadelphia/New York: Chilton Company, Book Division. Fair in Very Good dj. (c.1959). First Edition. Hardcover. [the book itself is intact but heavily worn; the covers appear to have been laminated in some fashion and the spine has been reinforced with clear tape, which has peeled away at the lower left corner of the front cover, plus there is fraying to the cloth along both the top and bottom edges -- all this being understandable, and due to the one-time owner's having kept the book in "heavy service," as explained in the description; the dust jacket is worn at the edges and extremities but is still attractive and serviceable, and as noted has been supplied from another copy of the same book]. (B&W photographs) A unique copy of this early "history" of television -- basically just a photo-illustrated survey of the major programs and personalities of the day, at time when the medium (at least in its major commercial incarnation) was barely a dozen years old -- that is festooned with nearly 250 autographs of 207 individuals, gathered by an erstwhile TV fan over the course of several decades. (A number of people signed the book multiple times.) Included are many of the giants of the entertainment world: Milton Berle, Jackie Gleason, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Kirk Douglas, Liberace, Mickey Rooney, Joe DiMaggio(!), Rod Serling, Vincent Price, Gene Autry, Lee Marvin, Johnny Weissmuller, Jayne Mansfield, Jimmy Durante, and many, … [Click Below for Full Description]

NABOKOV, Vladimir
G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1959. First American edition. Hardcover. 8vo. Original quarter-cloth over boards. Very good in like jacket. Some moderate chipping to head and heal of jacket spine, with attendant rubbing to book tips. Some edgewear to DJ with several small closed tears. Unclipped. Overall, clean and sound. INSCRIBED by Dmitri Manbokov (Vladimir and Vera's son and the translator of this book) to Matthew Brucolli: "For talented, loyal, hard-working, / long-suffering Matt Bruccoli / with warm wishes / Dmitri Nabokov / Monteaux, 13 July 1986." Very good / very good. A significant association of the first of Nabokov's Russian-language novels to be translated into English. Inscribed by the book's translator, Nabokov's son Dmitri, to bibliographer Matthew Brucolli (1931-2008). Brucolli studied English with Nabokov at Cornell and would go on to publish several books under his own imprint based on Nabokov's Ithaca lectures. The bibliographer also covered Nabokov for the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY. In addition, Brucolli and Dmitri would go on to edit an edition of Nabokov's SELECTED LETTERS (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989), a project they were likely in the midst of at the time of this inscription. A splendid triad of associations and a title rarely encountered inscribed, by either the author or the translator. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

ROOSEVELT, Eleanor
1959. Typed Note Signed ("Eleanor Roosevelt") to Israeli Foreign Secretary Golda Meir. The note is on Roosevelt's New York stationary and dated October 13, 1959. Matted to 5.75" x 5.5" and glazed and framed with a picture of the two women shaking hands. Unexamined out of frame but appears fine. Text of the note in full: "Dear Mrs. Meir: What lovely red roses you sent me! They are a delight but I am especially pleased with your thought and your good wishes. With warm thanks, Very cordially yours, Eleanor Roosevelt." On the verso is a pocket with the original envelope free franked by Roosevelt and addressed to Meir at the Consulate of Israel in New York. The frame has an old Argosy Bookshop label on the verso. While the content of the letter is unlikely to send scholars scurrying to revise historical texts, it does represent a connection between two of the most important and iconic women of the 20th Century. Fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

PASTERNAK, Boris.
Milan: Feltrinelli, [1959]. Milan: Feltrinelli,, [1959]. Octavo. Original pale green boards, titles to spine and front board in black. With the dust jacket designed by Ampelio Tettamanti. Top corner of front board worn, spotting to edges, otherwise a very nice copy, sound and smart, with only occasional minor marks to jacket and a small portion worn from the same upper fore-corner. First Feltrinelli edition in Russian (the third overall), first printing, issued in the very attractive and distinctive dust jacket designed by Ampelio Tettamanti (1914-1961), matching that of the first edition, published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957. Doctor Zhivago was deemed unfit for publication within the Soviet Union due to certain passages that were perceived as anti-Soviet. It was therefore first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957 after Pasternak signed a contract with him on 30 June 1956, granting the Italian publisher the copyright for translation. This edition was published in late April or early May 1959, and is preceded by the almost unobtainable, CIA-sponsored edition (September 1958) and the US edition, published in Michigan in plain cloth without a dust jacket (January 1959). The history of the book's publication in Russian is somewhat tangled: the first edition in Russian was printed by the Dutch publisher Mouton under Feltrinelli's imprint but without Feltrinelli's permission, as part of a covert CIA publishing and propaganda program, and the US edition was likewise intended to be published without acknowledgement of Feltrinelli's copyright. However, after the l … [Click Below for Full Description]
