Hansberry, Lorraine (James Baldwin)
Random House, New York, 1959. First edition of this groundbreaking play, the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway. Octavo, original half cloth. From the library of James Baldwin with his signature to the front free endpaper. Hansberry moved to Harlem in 1951 where she joined the staff of the African American journal Freedom Newspaper and worked on stories not only related to the Civil Rights Movement, but global struggles against colonialism and imperialism. It was during the period in which she conceived of A Raisin in the Sun that she also became involved in the emerging gay rights movement, of which James Baldwin had become the leading literary voice. In 1963, Baldwin was invited to the Manhattan apartment of Robert F. Kennedy to discuss the current state of race relations in the United States. In addition to several other prominent figures in the Civil Rights Movement including Kenneth Clark and Clarence Benjamin Jones, Baldwin invited Hansberry who had become an important voice in the movement. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Stan Phillips and Mel Williamson. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway, this groundbreaking play starred Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee and Diana Sands in the Broadway production which opened in 1959. Set on Chicago's South Side, the plot revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis and matriarch Lena, called Mama. When her deceased husband's insurance money comes through, Mama dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans, however: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama. Winner of the Drama Critic's Award as Best Play of the Year, it has been hailed as a "pivotal play in the history of the American Black theatre" by Newsweek and "a milestone in the American Theatre.". np, 1959. First Edition. Hardcover. Oblong 8vo. Commercial strong-bound album. Vinyl covered boards. 145 black and white; 4 color photographs verso and recto mounted to 23 black paper leaves, one or two elements loosely laid in. Front cover detached, but archivally mended. Edgewear to pages. Images generally clean, well preserved. A few prints perished. Overall very good. Very good. Original photograph album of the Zagar family of Chicago, focusing primarily on their daughter, Margaret Ann (b. 1936), and covering primarily the 1940's. Most prints snapshot in size, though notably several enlargements appear as well, including 4 class photographs between 1942-1950 from the Gompers School for the Handicapped on the city's South side at 123rd. and State St. Margaret Ann was apparently stricken with Polio at an early age, as early as 2 years old according to photograph dates, and her development is chronicled in detail, into young adulthood, closing with images of her in a wheelchair in December 1954. The images between present a rich visual archive of growing up with the disease. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ringling Bros. Barnum & Baily Circus 1951
Los Angeles / New York: This is the "first" and maybe the only sketchbook Herbert Ryman did Christmas 1959 in Los Angeles. "SUITE IN LINES" with "65" original sketches and drawings in ink and watercolour. Herbert (Herb) Ryman (1910 - 1989) was a famous Disney Imagineer. Ryman was an art director for such feature-length animated films as Fantasia and Dumbo. In 1953 Ryman drew the first illustrations of Walt Disney's vision of a theme park that eventually became Disneyland. Ryman worked on many special projects at Disney over a five decade span. He was the chief designer of the Cinderella Castle at the Walt Disney World Resort. He is well known for his watercolors of the rugged California coasts around Carmel and Point Lobos, as well as for his paintings of the Ringling Brothers Circus, and portraits of Emmett Kelly and other well known people. Many of his paintings hang in Hollywood's most famed homes. During the summers of 1949 and 1951, Ryman took a leave of absence from 20th Century Fox and travelled with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, living among the performers and documenting the circus in his paintings. (Source: Wikipedia) This sketch book collects many of his watercolor, pen & ink sketches inspired by this travel with the circus. On the first page there is a dedication to "Ida" And this "Ida" can only be Ida Costain born as Ida Randolph Spragge (1888-1975), the wife of the canadian novelist Thomas B. Costain, whose two volume novel "The Tontine" (1955) was illustrated by Ryman. A very unique object from an important American artist. Please notice the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lengyel, Sándor
1959. Size: A1 1 Sheet (cca. 55 x 84 cm). Beautiful poster by S aacute ndor Lengyel who applied the cartoon like humorous and playful style on most of his posters This manner was the most popular trend in the 1960s poster art however Lengyel 39 s exceptional talent allowed him to create unique easily recognizable designs despite creating in a common style As a result of the light pastel colours the composition becomes elegant and has an ethereal atmosphere The lady 39 s dress has no contours the blue and coral coloured stripes painted on the white background create the loose texture of the garment and contribute to the divine nature of the composition and the woman on the poster The shade of her hat falling on her face is light blue what the artist cleverly used instead of a darker colour to enhance the summery feeling The text 39 ready made garment for summer 39 is placed in front of the image of the sun The white box displaying the prices of the colthes becomes an organic part of the composition as the lady is leaning on it The poster does not promote a brand In the socialist era competition didn 39 t exist since everything was nationalized However in order to create the feeling of a developing economy the authorities found it important to publish commercial posters as well besides the propaganda ones At the time well educated and talented artist were commissioned with the design of these posters hence many exceptional pieces were born This one is a great example of those [Attributes: Hard Cover]

POPPER Karl R.
1959. Translated by the author. First edition in English. 8vo (235 x 160mm). 480 pp. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt on a red cloth panel, dust jacket (jacket lightly edge worn, small closed tear to top edge of front panel, spine panel faintly toned, otherwise an excellent copy). London, Hutchinson. [with:] POPPER (Karl R). Autograph Letter Signed (?K.R. Popper?) to Lionel Charles Robbins. 2 pages 4to, London School of Economics and Political Science letter head, Houghton Street, Aldwych, London, 10 December 1958. An important association copy, bringing together two stalwarts of the London School of Economics, with an ALS from the author to the British economist Lionel Charles Robbins (1898-1984), head of economics at the LSE, delightfully announcing: ?I am sending you the first advance copy of The Logic of Scientific Discovery.? The pair were colleagues for over twenty years, with Popper first taking up a Readership at the LSE in 1945 before being appointed Professor of Logic and Scientific Method in 1949. Their relationship was principally professional, forming a strong inter-departmental alliance, fortified by their mutual friendship with Friedrich von Hayek. In a letter to Hayek on 20th October 1964, Popper wrote: ?? I should also mention that, through your closeness to Lionel Robbins, I got to know him; and he is now my stand-by in the School, outside my department. He has been very good to me, and has helped me immensely, in many difficult situations at the school? (quoted in Shearmur & Turner, pp. 249f). They also had significant intellectual intersection … [Click Below for Full Description]

Laurie Lee
1959. Laurie Lee - Cider With Rosie - the libel case copy - UNIQUE - The Hogarth Press A first edition, first printing published by the Hogarth Press in 1959. A near fine copy (a little foxing to the page edge) in near fine wrapper with a little loss to corners. It is not price clipped. This copy, was sent on New Year's Eve 1959 by publishers Hogarth Press to the eminent 'publishing specialist' lawyer Michael Rubinstein when they realised they had - courtesy of Laurie Lee's 'creative memory' - a libel case to answer, given the story about the fire at the Piano Works on page 272. The case was ultimately heard in the High Court on 18 July 1960 and resulted in Lee himself paying substantial libel damages, and the libellous words and passages in the book being amended or deleted in subsequent printings. As such, Rubinstein's own 'specimen copy' is the original 'damning evidence' on which the case rested. It is complete with the original memo sent by the publisher with the book, which Rubinstein tipped in and saved. The handwritten note on Hogarth Press headed paper is addressed to Michael Rubinstein Esq. and invites him to 'see pp.272 and 273' which were Lee's offending passages. It confirms that copies had also been sent to other lawyers Oswald Hickson of Oswald Hickson, Collier & Co. and Mears Bartlett & Sons, both firms known to specialise in literary cases. It is signed off, perhaps with a touch of irony, 'Happy New Year'! Rubinstein also took on other famous cases - he acted for 'disgraced spy' Anthony Blunt and also for Penguin Books in the D. H. Lawrence 'Lady Chatterley … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia (1902-1969).
Southern Germany, July/August 1959. 114 black-and-white photographs, ca 7 x 10 cm each, tipped in to a brown patent leather album of 40 leaves with gilt cover rules and handwritten spine label "Besuch König Saud 1959" (large 4to, ca. 25 x 25 cm). Captioned in German in blue ballpoint throughout, with numerous newspaper clippings and other relevant ephemera. Unique photograph album comprised exclusively of previously unknown, unpublished material, documenting HRH King Saud's five-week visit to Germany in the summer of 1959. Providing the perspective not of a press photographer but of a participant with privileged access throughout, it was apparently assembled by a member of the German security detail, a special unit of the Federal Government's detective squad which provided necessary local backup to the King's own bodyguards. - King Saud arrived in Freiburg im Breisgau by train from Venice, on the evening of 22 July, accompanied by his brother HRH Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud; his uncle Ahmad bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud; the mayor of Riyadh, Prince Fahd bin Faisal bin Farhan; and four of his sons, as well as an entourage of some 80 persons. In Freiburg he visited his daughter Nour bint Saud, who was being treated at the University Hospital for severe burns sustained the previous year. The album shows King Saud's triumphal entrance at the train station, him granting an audience to Freiburg's mayor Josef Brandel, taking a walk through the city with his five-year-old son HRH Prince Mashhoor at his side, meeting the Saudi envoy to Germany, Jawad Mustafa Zikri, and visiting Lake T … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moore, Marianne
New York: Viking Press, 1959. 1st edition, cloth, with printed dust jacket. A presentation copy, inscribed to Holly Stevens, the daughter of poet Wallace Stevens. The inscription reads: "Mine originally, Holly, since / it had an unintentional stripe / on the jacket that was there to / stay -- (now a dragon): yours / from a complimented author / pleased that you want it / Marianne / Sept 17, 1959" in black fountain pen ink on the FEP. The date is the publication date of the title, and Moore has additionally dated the copyright page "September 17" in her hand. In typical Moore whimsy, the poet has created a drawing of a dragon on the dust jacket front cover, incorporating the "unintentional stripe" referred to in her inscription, and has titled the drawing "Dragon attacked by gnat" using the same black fountain pen ink as the inscription. A letter of provenance from the son of Holly Stevens is laid in. (Abbott A17.1.) Minimal sunning to jacket, else a fine representation of a remarkable association copy.
