        Miguel Street

1959. First Edition . NAIPUL, V.S. Miguel Street. (London): Andre Deutsch, (1959). Octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of Naipul's powerful collection of stories about colonial Trinidad.""Miguel Street by V. S. Naipaul, is a beguiling book about growing up in the West Indies. The sketches are written lightly, so that tragedy is understated and comedy is overstated, yet the ring of truth always prevails. A comparison with ""Porgy and Bess"" has been suggested. The parallel has at least the merit of reminding us that the whole world is one. In that hospitable mood we might also remember Mark Twain's tales of life on the Mississippi. But Miguel Street, in Trinidad, is not really very much like Catfish Row, nor are reminders of nineteenth-century Missouri prevalent. What is true and, if you will, significant about Mr. Naipaul's book is that it presents a world of its own excellently"" (New York Times). Book fine, dust jacket very nearly so.

        Rome

1959. First Edition . Signed. KLEIN, William. Rome: The City and Its People. Paris: Editions du Seuil, (1959). Tall quarto, original black cloth, photographic endpapers, original photographic dust jacket. $7000.First edition, French issue, the second volume in Klein’s acclaimed series of four “city” books, a distinctive association copy inscribed on the page before the title page to longtime friend, fellow photographer Peter Turnley, “To Peter, ROME SWEET ROME, en toute amitié, William [line drawn] William Klein Paris 2005,” with over 130 vivid, high-contrast heliogravures (many double-page), scarce in original dust jacket.According to Fellini, ""this is the best Rome there is and Klein is the best photographer there is. He knows Rome like a book and this is it."" ""Cheesy, delirious, pure Pop art,"" William Klein's Rome continues the ""raw, kinetic and utterly original"" innovations of Life is Good (1956) (Roth, 140-41). His genius resides in an unerring ability to remind ""us that much great, serious art is often about play, achieved simply by experimenting with the possibilities of the material. Forget trance and witness-the revels are the thing"" (Parr & Badger I:243). Rome is the second volume in Klein's ""city"" series, ""four books of photography which shook the very roots of this medium's young tradition… filled with raw, grainy, swirling yet abrupt images, which visually describe these cities in a manner never previously seen before"" (Christian Sciene Monitor). First edition, French issue; London, New York and Rome editions published same year. Text in French. Open Book, 178. See Icons of Photography, 120. This rare association copy is from the collection of Peter Turnley, renowned photographer for Newsweek and contributing editor for Harper's Magazine who has covered ""almost every important international news event of the last 15 years"" (New York Times). Warmly inscribed by Klein in Paris, where both photographers are based.Images clean and fresh, front inner paper hinge starting but sound; some chipping with loss to edges of bright, unrestored dust jacket. An exceptional association copy in extremely good condition.

        Eloise In Moscow.

Bottom cloth rubbed, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. The fourth book in Kay Thompson's beloved Eloise series. After a three-week stay in Moscow with her colleague Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson had plenty of fodder for her distinctly Eloisian travelogue: the food ("It is difficult to know what to eat in Moscow/ There is no melon in season/ Nichevo"); the stilted English of their tour guide ("That house is Chekhov/ That house is Stanislavsky if you want to see it/ No you cannot it is reconstruction"); national security ("Our telephone had quite a bit of static/ so we talked about General de Gaulle/ to throw them off track/ Everybody listens to everything in Moscow"

The Birthday Party (Signed By The Author)

The First UK Printing published by Encore Publishing Co.Ltd. in 1959. This edition was published solely as a wraps edition. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little creasing along the spine and a small crease at the upper front cover adjacent to the spine. The book remains tight and is free from erasures, inscriptions and markings. The book has been simply Signed without dedication on the title page by Harold Pinter. The Birthday Party was first staged in the spring of 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, before playing in Oxford and Wolverhampton. It opened in London, at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in May 1958 and infamously closed after only eight performances. It's failure is said to have caused Pinter to consider ending his ambition to be a playwright but subsequent revivals have cemented it's status as a classic. In 1959 the play received it's first such re-evalution when it was performed by the Tavistock Repertory Company at the Tower Theatre in Islington, London. This production provides the cover photograph of Encore's first edition. Pinter, who lived locally, saw the production and attended some rehearsals (although he was not directly involved in the production). The company, run by non-professionals, were the first to stage the play after it's 1958 opening. A rare first edition of Pinter's second full-length play (Having only been preceded by a student production play in 1957), published in limited numbers by Encore Publishing in 1959. Pinter went on to become one of the 20th century's greatest playwrights and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2005. An exceptionally scarce title to find signed by the Nobel Laureate. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Geschichte Des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils (1959-1965), Band IV: Die Kirche als Gemeinschaft: September 1964-September 1965 [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Giuseppe Alberigo (Herausgeber), Gunther Wassilowsky (Herausgeber)

Peeters Pub, 1959. Komonchak, G. Miccoli, H. Sauer, N. Tanner, L.A. Tagle, R. Burigana, G. Turbanti und G. Alberigo. The fourth and second to last volume of the extensive history of the second Vatican Council, written by an international team of specialists under the guidance of Giuseppe Albergio, church historian from Bologna, deals with its arguably most dramatic period. Three vital council texts seemed to be ready for adoptionchurch, ecumenicalism and freedom of religion. But the 'black week' (settimananera) of November 1964 brought about massive curtailments for the benefit of council minorities, such as in the question of the bishops' collegiality. A first frost chilled the conciliar spring during the' November crisis'. The events are reconstructed in a detailed and enthralling manner by J A Komonchak, G Miccoli, H Saucer, N Tanner, L A Tagle, R burigana, G Turbanti and G Alberigo.
