        The Affluent Society.

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1959.. FOURTH IMPRESSION WITH TYPED LETTER SIGNED. Octavo, pp.xii; 288. Publisher's blue cloth with silver titles to spine in typographic dust-jacket. Loosely tipped in is a folded air mail letter, addressed from Galbraith's office at Harvard to a correspondent in London, dated 2nd of March 1959. In the short note he cites his historic agreement with Keynes in saying that "we are controlled by ideas" but that he is of the view that on the "shorter wave" we are directed by "circumstances". A very good copy of this later printing with an interesting signed letter.

        Wild Raspberries

New York: Self-published (Printed by Seymour Berlin), 1959. Hardcover. Very Good. One of the 6 extraordinary artist's books which a young Andy Warhol created and self-published in the 1950s. This, "Wild Raspberries", was the last, the largest --and the most exuberant-- of the six. LESS THAN 100 COPIES WERE MADE AND THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED BY WARHOL IN A LARGE HAND IN PENCIL: "to Bobby and Susumu. Andy Warhol". (Susumu Ikata was a Japanese-American potter and ceramicist and a friend whose portrait Warhol painted circa 1960. Bobby is unknown). The folio consists of 19 offset lithographed plates (including title) of images by Andy Warhol and recipes in calligraphic lettering by Warhol's mother Julia Warhola. One of the plates is double-page, one handcolored. 7 raspberry-colored tissue-guards; minor stain on title. Original raspberry-colored boards; spine worn, boards faded and stained as usual. The coloring on the first illustration, "Salade de Alf Landon", may have been done by Susumu Ikata himself. The number of plates colored in each copy varies widely. "Apparently part of the edition was completely hand-colored, but most of the copies were hand-colored only in part, for the most part on the first pages" (from "Reading Warhol"). The book was exhibited at the Bodley Gallery in New York during Christmas, 1959 and was enthusiastically reviewed. The title is a coy reference to Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film "Wild Strawberries", which had just begun to show in New York in the summer of 1959. Warhol and Suzie Frankfurt (who concocted the outlandish recipes) tried to sell the book thru Bloomingdale's but sales were very flat. Now, all these years later, the book is a prized rarity, a highspot in 20th century artist's books and one of the most valuable "cookbooks" of the last 100+ years. (References: "Manet to Hockney", pg. 130, "Reading Warhol", pp. 118-124, 294).

        THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

New York: The Viking Press, 1959., 1959. First edition. First edition. Fine, bright copy in a fine bright dust jacket with a hint of wear to the head of spine. Dr. Montague, a scientific investigator of ghostly phenomena, has chosen to live for several weeks at Hill House, by repute a place of horror that will brook no human habitation. He selects three companions previously unknown to him. The two girls, Eleanor and Theo, are chosen because each has had a minor, accidental brush with the supernatural. The young man, Luke, is the heir to Hill House and more than anxious to participate in the program. This book is the basis for several films, most notably "The Haunting" (1963) directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, and Richard Johnson. Stephen King says that the book is one of the greatest horror books of all time. An exceptional copy.

        American Epic. Vol. I

1959 - HOOVER, Herbert. An American Epic. Introduction. The Relief of Belgium and Northern France 1914-1930. Volume I. Chicago: Henry Regnery, 1959. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of the first volume in President Hoover's multi-volume history of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, the world's first international relief agency, warmly inscribed by him, "To my good friends, Francis and Clark Stillman from Herbert Hoover."Hoover's philanthropic and government work during the First World War confirmed his progressive beliefs and brought him wide public notice at home and abroad. Serving as head of the Commission for the Relief in Belgium (CRB), as President Wilson's U.S. Food Administrator (1917-19) in charge of voluntary rationing, and director general of the American Relief Administration in Europe (1919-20) made him such a popular figure that both parties courted him as a presidential nominee in 1920. Refusing to run for the presidency, Hoover served as secretary of commerce in the administrations of Presidents Harding and Coolidge, transforming that department between 1921 and 1928 into one of the most important and well-publicized federal departments. As commerce secretary he encouraged and helped to develop some of the most advanced economic theories about business cycles and industrial standardization, promoted government regulation of the nascent radio and aviation industries, and supported federal supervision of foreign loans" (ANB). The recipients, E. Clark Stillman and his wife Francis Jennings Stillman, were dedicated philanthropists, bibliophiles and art collectors. Clark Stillman, a brilliant linguist, also served as a president of the same Belgian American Education Foundation (BAEF) that was the offspring of the Committee for Relief in Belgium (CRB), which Hoover organized and headed in WWI—and is the subject of this volume. Hoover was also the first president of the BAEF (1920-1932), and Stillman began serving on the BAEF as its secretary in 1947 before becoming its president in 1962.Book fine; slight edge-wear, minor chipping to extremely good dust jacket.         THINGS FALL APART - UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY

New York: McDowell, Obolensky Inc., 1959. First Edition. Publisher's proof sheets (rectos only, measuring 5 10/16" x 7 6/16"), comb-bound along upper edge into pale blue printed covers; [2]-215pp. Staining to front cover, with a small abrasion to lower edge of same (partially affecting publication date); faint dust-soil to text edges, with some occasional staining to margins of preliminary leaves; Very Good. The late Nigerian author's highly-regarded first book, and a cornerstone title of post-colonial African literature. Achebe's novel narrowly escaped being thrown out and forgotten altogether, thanks to a fortunate series of events. The author sent the only copy of his work, a hand-written manuscript, to a typing service in the UK, as he knew a well-typed document would make a more favorable impression on potential publishers. The typing service, having received the manuscript, dismissed it as a joke, and it sat in the office untyped for months. It would have languished there were it not for the efforts of Achebe's boss, Angela Beattie, who showed up at the typing agency on a trip to England and demanded the follow through with their service. The novel was sent the typescript to William Heinemann, who, after seeking the advice of professor Donald Macrae, was heralded it as "the best first novel since the War." The novel has since sold more than 8 million copies world-wide, and has never been out print. Rare in this format.

        Praha Panoramaticka

        Miguel Street

1959 - NAIPUL, V.S. Miguel Street. (London): Andre Deutsch, (1959). Octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of Naipul's powerful collection of stories about colonial Trinidad."Miguel Street by V. S. Naipaul, is a beguiling book about growing up in the West Indies. The sketches are written lightly, so that tragedy is understated and comedy is overstated, yet the ring of truth always prevails. A comparison with "Porgy and Bess" has been suggested. The parallel has at least the merit of reminding us that the whole world is one. In that hospitable mood we might also remember Mark Twain's tales of life on the Mississippi. But Miguel Street, in Trinidad, is not really very much like Catfish Row, nor are reminders of nineteenth-century Missouri prevalent. What is true and, if you will, significant about Mr. Naipaul's book is that it presents a world of its own excellently" (New York Times). Book fine, dust jacket very nearly so.
