        Eloise In Moscow.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1959. First edition. Thin quarto, original cloth. Boldly signed by Kay Thompson on the front free endpaper. Additionally signed by illustrator, Hilary Knight. Bottom cloth rubbed, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. The fourth book in Kay Thompson's beloved Eloise series. After a three-week stay in Moscow with her colleague Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson had plenty of fodder for her distinctly Eloisian travelogue: the food ("It is difficult to know what to eat in Moscow/ There is no melon in season/ Nichevo"); the stilted English of their tour guide ("That house is Chekhov/ That house is Stanislavsky if you want to see it/ No you cannot it is reconstruction"); national security ("Our telephone had quite a bit of static/ so we talked about General de Gaulle/ to throw them off track/ Everybody listens to everything in Moscow"

The Birthday Party (Signed By The Author)

The First UK Printing published by Encore Publishing Co.Ltd. in 1959. This edition was published solely as a wraps edition. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little creasing along the spine and a small crease at the upper front cover adjacent to the spine. The book remains tight and is free from erasures, inscriptions and markings. The book has been simply Signed without dedication on the title page by Harold Pinter. The Birthday Party was first staged in the spring of 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, before playing in Oxford and Wolverhampton. It opened in London, at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in May 1958 and infamously closed after only eight performances. It's failure is said to have caused Pinter to consider ending his ambition to be a playwright but subsequent revivals have cemented it's status as a classic. In 1959 the play received it's first such re-evalution when it was performed by the Tavistock Repertory Company at the Tower Theatre in Islington, London. This production provides the cover photograph of Encore's first edition. Pinter, who lived locally, saw the production and attended some rehearsals (although he was not directly involved in the production). The company, run by non-professionals, were the first to stage the play after it's 1958 opening. A rare first edition of Pinter's second full-length play (Having only been preceded by a student production play in 1957), published in limited numbers by Encore Publishing in 1959. Pinter went on to become one of the 20th century's greatest playwrights and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2005. An exceptionally scarce title to find signed by the Nobel Laureate. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Geschichte Des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils (1959-1965), Band IV: Die Kirche als Gemeinschaft: September 1964-September 1965 [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Giuseppe Alberigo (Herausgeber), Gunther Wassilowsky (Herausgeber)

Peeters Pub, 1959. Komonchak, G. Miccoli, H. Sauer, N. Tanner, L.A. Tagle, R. Burigana, G. Turbanti und G. Alberigo. The fourth and second to last volume of the extensive history of the second Vatican Council, written by an international team of specialists under the guidance of Giuseppe Albergio, church historian from Bologna, deals with its arguably most dramatic period. Three vital council texts seemed to be ready for adoptionchurch, ecumenicalism and freedom of religion. But the 'black week' (settimananera) of November 1964 brought about massive curtailments for the benefit of council minorities, such as in the question of the bishops' collegiality. A first frost chilled the conciliar spring during the' November crisis'. The events are reconstructed in a detailed and enthralling manner by J A Komonchak, G Miccoli, H Saucer, N Tanner, L A Tagle, R burigana, G Turbanti and G Alberigo.

        Goodbye, Columbus

London Andre Deutsch 1959 First Printing. Small 8vo; 157pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine lettered in gold; pictorial dust jacket priced at 10s/6d. About Fine, cloth bright and clean, gilt lettering brilliant, but with light foxing to preliminaries and top edge; in a Fine jacket with very minor professional restoration (involving none of the design or lettering) to reinforce several closed tears and to fill two trivial losses. Near Fine+ ¶ A novella and five short stories, two of which, "The Defender of the Faith" and "The Conversion of The Jews," now widely anthologized and placed among Roth's best short fiction. "Intermingling comedy and tragedy, the hilarity and heartbreak of modern Jewish life, Columbus follows Roth's hero, Neil Klugman, as he struggles to cope with a burgeoning love affair, to tolerate his empty lifestyle and his barren surroundings in Newark, New Jersey, and to decide whether the materialistic goals he now espouses are worth pursuing." The first book from "arguably the greatest American master of fictional doppelgangers." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works (our specialty). Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
