My Philosophical Development. [Beautifully Signed by Bertrand Russell]. [With chapters on Principia Mathematica and an Appendix with an essay by Alan Wood: "Russell's Philosophy - a Study of its Development"].

George Allen & Unwin,, 1959. First Edition. London, George Allen & Unwin, 1959. 16cm x 24cm 279 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket. Some mild signs of foxing. Otherwise in very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Very scarce book with the original signature of Bertrand Russell, one of the founders of analytic philosophy. Highly Collectable. Includes the following chapters: My Present Views of the World / Excursion into Idealism / Logical Technique in Mathematics / Principia Mathematica: Philosophical Aspects / Principia Mathematica: Mathematical Aspects / The Impact of Wittgenstein / Theory of Knowledge / The Retreat from Pythagoras / etc.nnBertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell (18 May 1872 ? 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, writer, social critic, political activist and Nobel laureate. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had "never been any of these things, in any profound sense". He was born in Monmouthshire into one of the most prominent aristocratic families in the United Kingdom.nnIn the early 20th century, Russell led the British "revolt against idealism". He is considered one of the founders of analytic philosophy along with his predecessor Gottlob Frege, colleague G. E. Moore, and his protégé Ludwig Wittgenstein. He is widely held to be one of the 20th century's premier logicians. With A. N. Whitehead he wrote Principia Mathematica, an attempt to create a logical basis for mathematics. His philosophical essay "On Denoting" has been considered a "paradigm of philosophy". His work has had a considerable influence on logic, mathematics, set theory, linguistics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science (see type theory and type system), and philosophy, especially the philosophy of language, epistemology, and metaphysics.nnRussell was a prominent anti-war activist; he championed anti-imperialism and went to prison for his pacifism during World War I. Later, he campaigned against Adolf Hitler, then criticised Stalinist totalitarianism, attacked the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War, and was an outspoken proponent of nuclear disarmament. In 1950 Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought" (Wikipedia)

The Birthday Party - SIGNED, DATED AND INSCRIBED BY PINTER TO HIS LEADING LADY

Encore, 1959 An exceptionally rare first edition of Pinter's second full-length play, published in limited numbers by Encore Publishing in 1959. This edition is signed on the title page by the author, with a personal dedication to the actress Margery Withers - the second actress to play the part of 'Meg' (and the first to do so on television). - - - - - - - - - - The Birthday Party was first staged in the spring of 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, before playing in Oxford and Wolverhampton. It opened in London, at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in May 1958 and infamously closed after only eight performances. It's failure is said to have caused Pinter to consider ending his ambition to be a playwright but subsequent revivals have cemented it's status as a classic. In 1959 the play received it's first such re-evalution when it was performed by the Tavistock Repertory Company at the Tower Theatre in Islington, London. This production provides the cover photograph of Encore's first edition. Pinter, who lived locally, saw the production and attended some rehearsals (although he was not directly involved in the production). The company, run by non-professionals, were the first to stage the play after it's 1958 opening. [Tower Theatre archive: http://www.towertheatre.co/plays/1959/p5906.htm] This copy of the book belonged to Margery Withers, the actress who played 'Meg' in the Tavistock Rep Company production. It is personally signed by Pinter with the following message: "To Margery, I shall always remember your wonderful performance as Meg. You were the one and only belle of the ball. Love Harold." It is dated, by Pinter, 'Dec. 59'. The quote 'the one and only belle of the ball' is taken directly from the play itself. - - - - - - - - - - In 1960 Margery was offered to reprise the role in the world's first television production of the play. At the time she was working at the BBC and could not get permission to appear in the ITV drama - emboldened and encouraged by Pinter she quit her job to become an actress full-time. She made her professional debut in the ITV television version of this play and subsequently appeared in numerous British television series and films over the next 40 years, including parts in Coronation Street, Z Cars, The Bill, Casualty and Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies. She died in 1999. Harold Pinter went on to become one of Britain's most celebrated playwrights, screenwriters, actors, poets and theatre directors. In 2005 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died in 2008. Condition: This was Margery's personal copy and has suffered a little wear to the edges. The front page with the signature has been secured to the front cover with sellotape at some point. This doesn't impinge on the signature and with a bit of careful restoration a better job could be made of this. There's also a small corner of the title page missing, but otherwise the book is complete with no other lose pages and no major defects. The binding now is tight. Pinter signatures from the 1950s are also incredibly rare. This is a first edition of Pinter's first published play, signed and dated by the author with a personal message to his leading lady.

        The Americans

FIRST EDITION New York: Grove Press, 1959. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF FRANK'S MASTERPIECE, possibly the most influential of all American photobooks, SIGNED BY FRANK on half-title. With introduction by Jack Kerouac. In 1955, Frank "was at work on a project supported but the Guggenheim Foundation that was to present a radically different vision of America and the world... Frank's photographs--taken during travels across the United States in 1955 and 1956--would arguably become the most influential achievement of the entire postwar period in terms of their impact on photographers, artists, and writers.??"Frank's book was called, simply, The Americans. It was first published in France in 1958 and then in America in 1959 with a preface by Frank's friend, writer Jack Kerouac. Frank depicted America as a society with a deep-rooted sense of psychological isolation, what sociologist David Riesman called 'the lonely crowd.' America for Frank was a melancholy, even bleak or frightening place marred by racial and class divisions and enlivened only occasionally by a glimpse of lyrical sadness or joy. Frank's photographs, shot in black and white with a 35mm camera, seemed deliberately casual. The lighting and composition of the images were highly unconventional compared to most photojournalism or fine art photography at the time. Frank was after something more personal, more immediate and spontaneous" (Goldberg and Silberman, American Photography).??"Even the design of the text was somewhat revolutionary. Reflecting Walker Evans's book American Photography, Frank's book was sparse and the photographs were only printed on the right-hand side of the pages. The left-hand side was blank except for the page numbers. Thus, from Frank we get a vision of a foreigner's response to his adopted country that is a kind of 'anguished visual poetry rather than graphic art.' Jack Kerouac... wrote in the introduction to the book 'he sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world'" (Encyclopedia of Twentieth-century Photography).??New York: Grove Press, 1959. Oblong quarto, original black cloth, original dust jacket. Book fine, dust jacket price-clipped and with some edgewear. An exceptionally good copy with a particularly strong Frank signature of a book that is notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition. Fine / Very Good.

Dents de Lait, Dents de Loup.

(Paris: 1959). Folio. 65pp. From an edition of 211 copies, this is one of fifteen copies signed by the artist, Jacques Villon, the poet, Henri Pichette, and by the editor, Pierre de Tartas; and with an extra suite of all thirteen etchings, plus duplicate extra suites of the four double-page etchings, two of which are in color. This extraordinary illustrated work shows Villon's range of style, as it includes abstract, Cubist, landscape, and floral studies. It also shows his range of technique, with areas of cross-hatching, aquatint, and color aquatint. The two-color aquatint spreads are interspersed with the text of the poems. A member of the Duchamp family, Villon left the study of law to join the Cubist movement and became particularly known for his virtuosity in color etching. The extra suites of the four double-page plates are printed on japon nacré. This copy has been bound by French master-binder Renaud Vernier in full dark brown box calf with plaquettes set into the front and rear panels that rotate on a stainless steel axis. The plaquettes are formed from two types of lacquered exotic hardwood: macassar ebony and French Guyanan wacapou. Vernier explores the double nature of the title through the revolving panel, placing "Dents de Lait" on one side with the lettering in dark ebony against the lighter wacapou wood; "Dents de Loup" is given the opposite treatment on the other side of the panel. This motif is extended to the back cover, where Villon's name appears on one side, wacapou on ebony, and Pichette's name on the other in reverse. Endleaves are done in "Sienna earth" suede. The finish work on the binding was executed by Claude Ribal, Vernier's long-time collaborator, whose initials appear on the lower rear doublure. Housed in a matching chemise and slipcase. The former apprentice of legendary binder Pierre-Lucien Martin, Vernier has been recognized by France as a living national heritage, and in 2000, he was named "Maître d'Art" -- the only binder in France to be awarded this title. A brilliant synthesis of binding and illustration, resulting in the perfect livre d'artiste. Extremely fine. (The Artist & the Book, p. 214).

        WASP WOMAN, THE (1959)

Filmgroup 1959 - Vintage original 36 x 14" (90 x 35 cm.) insert poster, USA. Susan Cabot, Anthony Eisley, Barboura Morris, dir: Roger Corman; Filmgroup. One of the best remembered of the early Roger Corman horror/sci-fi thrillers. Story of a woman cosmetic tycoon who cannot accept her natural process of getting older and develops from wasp enzymes her own formula to keep from aging. Of course her formula, when over-used, turns her into a murderous wasp. The low budget special effects may now look tacky, but the film retains a vintage charm and certain horror. The poster art does this in abundance. The graphics and tag lines are classic. This would be the last feature film for star Susan Cabot. Roger Corman would soon turn his attention to Edgar Allan Poe, and begin filming in color, on larger budgets -- but this is one of various of his early movies, all shot in a few days on minute budgets, and comprising a variety of genres (science-fiction, horror, rock and roll, juvenile delinquents, you name it, pretty much anything that could play in a drive-in cinema back in the 50s). These early Corman films all have a zest for movie making which, more than half a century later, is still palpable. Lightly folded, entirely unrestored, with some normal wear along fold lines, and a few small pinholes at all four corners and at the center top blank white area. VERY GOOD+.

Doktor Zhivago. (Doctor Zhivago). Authorised edition in Russian.

Milano Milan:: Feltrinelli Editore. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1959. First Edition. Hardcover. Publication April or May 1959. Original pale green paper-covered boards, lettered in black with publisher's mark in black to spine, echoed on dust-wrapper. 'Prima edizione in lingua italiana:novembre 1957 ... ' to half-title verso. Ampelio Tettamanti illustrated dust-wrapper (c.f. Feltrinelli 1957 Italian edition). Price of 42s. net. to front flap. Contents list numbered p.567 (see Mancosu 165). Book in very good condition. Fragile dust-wrapper very neatly reinforced inside edges and folds. Usual browning of paper-edges and off-setting to endpapers. Inscribed "To Nina with much love Wanda, 1959". ; Significant publication. First published in this form at the end of April 1959 or beginning of May. The hand-written date on the f.e.p. may even refer to the publication date. It seems to be in an 'English' hand. Much has been written on the early editions of Dr Zhivago, see Mancosu: "Inside the Zhivago Storm", 2013. The accuracy of the text caused much dispute as well as the legalities of publication. Although Feltrinelli had signed a contract with Pasternak to be the first to publish the Russian edition (after the Italian translation in 1957), there exists both an unauthorised earlier Mouton edition published The Hague, 1958, and a 1959 'Michigan' edition published only after a wrangle with Feltrinelli. Even after Feltrinelli's eventual publication in April or May 1959 many questions arose regarding the accuracy of the text. ; 567pp pages .
