np: Aux Éditions du Seuil, 1959. First edition. Oblong 4to, 140 pp, bound in laminated, photographically illustrated boards; no dust jacket as issued. Illustrated with numerous photogravures. Text in French. Cover designed by Pierre Fauxcheux. The first edition of this early work by Marker, and one of the greatest photobooks of the 1950's. The book is an accumulation of photographs Marker took on a trip to North Korea, interspersed with old engravings, found images, and images appropriated from pop culture. The seamless way in which Marker moves among different types of media in the book have a distinct kinship with the travel guides Marker edited for the same publisher during this era, as well as his film La Jetée, which would come out three years after the present work. A clean, relatively bright copy showing only light age toning and some minor bumping to the edge of the text block. There is a slight sag to the text block, as usual, and some very slight overopening between the first and second signatures and the last two signatures, but the binding remains sound. The book is notorious for the fragility of the binding - the weight of the coated paper stretched the abilities of the binders at du Seuil - and intact copies such as this are scarce.

Advise and Consent: A Novel of Washington Politics.

New York: Doubleday & Company, 1959. First edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Senator Clark with best regards Allen Drury." The recipient Joseph S. Clark, Jr. was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania from 1957 to 1969. He previously served as the 116th Mayor of Philadelphia from 1952 to 1956. While in the Senate, Clark earned a reputation as a strong supporter of civil rights and congressional reform. He sponsored the Manpower Development and Training Act and the Area Redevelopment Act. An excellent example with some toning and rubbing in a very good first issue dust jacket with the $5.75 price and Doubleday imprint on the spine. A very nice association, uncommon in the first edition and signed. The Saturday Review said of Advise and Consent in August 1959 that "It may be a long time before a better one comes along." Roger Kaplan of Policy Review wrote in 1999 that the novel "in many ways invented a genre in fiction. The use of a racy intrigue, if possible involving both sex and foreign policy, is what characterizes the contemporary form. Forty years on, Advise and Consent is the only book of this genre that a literary-minded person really ought to read." The novel was adapted into the 1962 film Advise and Consent, directed by Otto Preminger and starring Walter Pidgeon and Henry Fonda.

Broder Louis 1959 - SUPERBE EXEMPLAIRE CONSERVE TEL QUE PARU. UN DES 20 EXEMPLAIRES DE TETE. SIGNE PAR MIRO ET RENE CHAR. Paris, Louis Broder. 1959.

First edition, only impression, one of 250 copies only. Presentation copy, inscribed by Greene on the front free endpaper: "For Yvonne & Jacques Cloetta with every good wish for Christmas 1960, from Graham Greene." Yvonne Cloetta (1923?2001), whom Greene first met in 1959, would become one of the author's closest companion for the last thirty years of his life. Greene "moved to Antibes in the 1960s partly because he wanted to be near her home in Juan les Pins. Though she never left her husband, Jacques, she was almost always at Greene's side when he was in Antibes, and would usually spend holidays with him on Capri. He had a comfortable life with Mme Cloetta, who made few demands on him, and he was reasonably content in Antibes, where the local people left him alone and the authorities treated him with respect? [When] Greene finally left France in 1990 [he] spent the last year of his life at the village of Corseaux, outside Vevey, Switzerland, sharing an apartment with Mme Cloetta" (ODNB).
