Editions Trianon, Paris 1959 - 193pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. Designed by Marcel Duchamp. Text in French. With a bibliography. This graphically striking publication is Robert Lebel's catalogue raisonné of two hundred and seven works executed by Marcel Duchamp between 1902 and 1958 that includes a design by the pioneering Dada and Surrealist master. An internally most handsome example of the 1959 French first printing showing minor abrading to the cloth over the tips of the boards at both ends of the spine along with some mottling and light discoloration of the cloth in a bright, well preserved English language Trianon Press dust jacket housed in the publisher's unprinted chipboard slipcase bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATIONS "Cher Emily / Cher Georges / Staempfli / Anges de Cadaques / et pas du ski nautique / affecteusement / Marcel 1961" and "lu et apprové (pas le livre, la dedicace) / Robert Lebel 1961" in blue ink across the portrait of Duchamp on the second preliminary. Swiss-born George William Staempfli moved to New York in 1935 where he later worked for Knoedler Gallery before becoming the curator of paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. In 1959 he and his wife Emily opened the Staempfli Gallery in Manhattan, and the following year the couple purchased a home in Cadaques, Spain where they frequently hosted their close art world friends including Salvador and Gala Dali - who the gallery showed - and Marcel and Teeny Duchamp.         Reunion in Barcelona

Northwood, Middlesex: Scorpion Press. 1959. First. First English edition. Wrappers. Modest soiling on the front wrap, a little age-toning, still a nice, near fine copy. One of 500 numbered copies. Laid in is a prospectus for other Miller books, with a hand correction by Miller. The book is Inscribed by Miller to Sydney Omarr: "For Sydney Omarr with all good thoughts from Henry Miller. 2/21/59." Omarr was the "astrologer to the stars" and published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers; his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. He started out during the Second World War at the age of 17 when his predictions of horse races, boxing matches, and other sporting events were broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. Omarr and Miller became close friends, sharing the same tastes. Omarr liked to surround himself with beautiful women and was the personal adviser to Jayne Mansfield, Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, and Mae West, among others. Omarr wrote a book on Miller, Henry Miller: His World of Urania, and Miller wrote the introduction to Sydney Omarr's Astrological Guide to 1973 and the liner notes to the record album Presenting Sydney Omarr. A very nice association. .

Searching for Interstellar Communications" (Cocconi & Morrison in Nature 184, 1959, pp. 844-846 WITH "Interstellar and Interplanetary Communication by Optical Masers"(Schwartz & Townes) in Nature 190, 1961, pp. 205-208

TWO BOUND VOLUMES. FIRST EDITIONS OF BOTH THE SEMINAL 1959 SETI PAPER (the SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE) ADVOCATING THE USE OF MICROWAVE COMMUNICATION (radio signals) FOR INTERSTELLAR COMMUNICATION & the 1961 PAPER SUGGESTING THE USE OF PULSED OPTICAL LASER SIGNALS AS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION ACROSS INTERSTELLAR DISTANCES. Together "these papers transformed the search for other civilizations from a fantastical, entrepreneurial activity into a branch of mainstream science" (McConnell, Beyond Contact, 11). The modern SETI era began in 1959 with the publication of the first paper, 'Searching for Interstellar Communications'. "This landmark paper, authored by physicist Philip Morrison and astrophysicist Giuseppe Cocconi, describes the idea of using radio-telescopes to detect weak radio signals from other civilizations. The paper "summarized the technical requirements for transmitting and receiving interstellar radio signals, and remains the blueprint from which most of today's SETI projects derive" (McConnell, 75). "The problem of communicating with extraterrestrials is that first there has to be an agreement on a medium, which in the 1950s was radio, and then agreement on a frequency. If it is assumed that Its want to communicate by radio, then the problem of which noise-free frequency out of millions has to be considered. "Cocconi and Morrison proposed a frequency which was based on the rate at which hydrogen atoms emit radiation when the spin axis of the electron orbiting the nucleus flips over from being parallel to the nucleus's spin to being opposite to it. They argued that the hydrogen frequency 'has a universal uniqueness, not set by anthropocentric considerations, that fits it as the outstanding choice for potential communicators who have not had the opportunity to reach agreement on a frequency' (Cocconi and Morrison, 1959, 844 and Lamb, The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, 16). Cocconi and Morrison believed that first efforts should be devoted to examining the closest likely stars. Specifically, they proposed a search be made of some of the nearest sun-like stars for signals at or near the 21, -centimeter wavelength of neutral hydrogen. Two years after Cocconi and Morrison's paper on microwave communication, American physicists Charles Townes and Robert Schwartz suggest, in the 1961 second paper offered, an alternative method of communication using lasers. Their paper, 'Interstellar and Interplanetary Communication by Optical Masers', "suggested that an advanced civilization might have become very sophisticated in the use of optical masers rather than in the techniques of short radio waves" (Lamb, 28). Put another way, they argued that alien civilizations could conceivably by using lasers for interstellar communications at optical wavelengths rather than microwaves. At the time, our use of lasers was in its infancy "as opposed to the relative 'maturity' of microwave communication, so the area remained unexplored" (Taylor, Explaining SETI, 24 August 2004). Townes and Schwartz's paper provided a blueprint for optical (laser) communication across interstellar distances. CONDITION & DETAILS: Two volumes. London: Macmillan and Co. 4to. 10.5 by 7.5 inches (263 x 188mm). Volume 184: [6], 1004, [4]. Volume 190: [4], cvii, [1224], 4. In-text illustrations throughout.         Typed Letter Signed ("Arthur C. Clarke") to Westley S. Hartley, in response to the latter's question regarding the value of his education to him as a writer

Colombo, Ceylon, 1959. One page, on letterhead of his company "Clarke-Wilson Associates". 1 vols. 4to. Small tear at fold, else fine. With accompanying envelope and with a one-page, 4to, Typed carbon copy of Clarke's bio/bibiliobraphy. One page, on letterhead of his company "Clarke-Wilson Associates". 1 vols. 4to. "All education and experience is important to a writer ... " Written in response to Hartley's TLS asking: "How important ... was [your] high school education, and is college experience necessary for creative writing?" Hartley had cited the biographical sketch in MODERN SF, and Clarke responds in his reply: "The statement in MODERN SF is very much out of date; at current count I have 25 books published or about to appear. Incidentally my degree was in physics and maths, not chemistry. "ALL education and experience is important to a writer; he can't have too much of either. I did not go to college until I was almost 30; my first short stories and novels were done while I was still in the RAF. You will find more of my biography in the Ballantine edition of EARTHLIGHT, and Clifton Fadiman's comments in my new anthology ACROSS THE SEA OF STARS may be helpful. "My education was essential for works such as INTERPLANETARY FLIGHT and THE EXPLORATION OF SPACE, but much less so for my novels. And much of my current writing (e.g., THE REEFS OF TAPROBANE, THE DEEP RANGE) is based on my present underwater activities, which don't even require a high school education ... The enclosed data sheet may also be useful to you ... Sincerely, Arthur C. Clarke."

Hong Kong (Kai Tak Airport), Penang & Singapore photograph album: Royal Air Force in the Far East

1959. Hardcover. Very good condition. Profusely illustrated photograph and souvenir album of a member of the Royal Air Force serving in the 1950s in Hong Kong at its first international airport, and at Penang during the Malayan Emergency. Includes 76 real snap shots of Kai Tak and local Hong Kong sites, as well as 21 studio shots of movie stars & beauty queens, as well as much ephemera. In addition, there is one large real photograph of the 205/209 Squadron Seletar in front of a Sunderland in Singapore, as well as 23 real snap shots of Penang. The owner of the album was part of the RAF affiliated with the flying boats at Kai Tak in Hong Kong. The Sunderland four engine flying boats were based at Kai Tak and Kowloon from just after WWII until 1959. The Sunderlands provided search and rescue services in the Hong Kong area to military and civil aircraft during daylight. At this time Cathay Pacific had only 5 aircraft, and BOAC flew a daily service from London. No flights could take off or land at Kai Tak at night due to the dangerous conditions of the airfield. The Malayan Emergency was a guerrilla war fought between Commonwealth armed forces and the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA), the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP), from 1948 until 1960. The album owner was a Corporal Michael A. Jordan who was stationed at RAF Kai Tak, and later at Minden Barracks, Penang. Most of the original photographs- 76 b&w real snap shots - are of Jordan's tenure in Hong Kong. Included are: aerial views of landing at the air port in the evening; Kai Tak tin town; local friends; the local Buddhist temple; the Diamond Hill resettlement area; the "Nulla"; a landscape "After Typhoon Gloria"; Shang-Hai Street, Kowloon; denizens of Hong Kong including Hong Kong "Screws"(police); street children; Bank of China street view; "Wanchai" in the evening; views of Kowloon form Hong Kong Island; waterfront views Kowloon & Hong Kong; views from Victoria Peak; "China" countryside; Tiger Balm Garden; local river boats, sampans, junks, walla walla (motor boat used for ferry service); rice paddies; temple of 100 Golden Buddas in Shatin; Nathan Road; petrol station; and movie advertising billboards. There is a great deal of Hong Kong ephemera, including currency; Hong Kong stamps (with the cancellation marks); color printed cards & wrappers; Kowloon bus tickets; cinema tickets; wine & brandy labels; a silk woven b&w portrait of Mao Tze Tung (4 1/4 x 6 1/4"); color printed beer labels; Communist China celebrations flyer; a "Chung" (Good luck folded banner with silver lettering on red paper); color printed hotel brochures; and a large folded color printed movie poster in Chinese and English advertising "The Kingdom and the Beauty". The album opens with a large b&w photograph of the RAF album owner relaxing in his bathing suit. It then follows his route to the far East, with b&w snap shots, color and b&w postcards, including: his ship the "Empire Fowey", bunks on board the Fowey; Canary Islands; Cape Town South Africa; Durban; Singapore; and Kowloon hotel luggage labels. This is followed by a section of color postcards titled "At Last! Hong Kong". The cards here are titled: "Across to Kowloon (showing a city view at night), At Aberdeen, H. K. (showing fishing boats); and Hong Kong Tiger Balm Gardens. This is followed by Ferry to Macau by M. V. Tai-Loy or S. S. Tak-shing (accompanied with 2 stamped ships passes, July 1958. Next is "Sent to Penang", with color postcards of Town Centre, Georgetown and the Botanic Garden. The 23 b&w snap shots of Penang consist of images of cafes, "chow" shops & stalls, Penang High Road, fortune teller, at Minden Barracks, including "Our slack mob at Penang (Bayan-Lepas) airport and a shot of the crashed DC 3 "Charity" Dakota. Following pages include shots of local people, bus tickets, Penang Malaya postal stamps, Malaya/Borneo $1 bill, and local beauty queens. Jordan next returns to Singapore and 205/209 Squadron, with 2 images of seaplanes and a large photograph captioned "205/209 Squadron Seletar, Singapore", showing the enormous Sunderland flying boat behind RAF officers, and "note 3 stars over the door". The photo stamped 4 June 1959 by Alex. M. Currie". The last part of the album consists of photographs of "movie queens" and RAF service members with local girl friends, captioned in both English & Chinese. There are 21 movie star real photographs and 12 b&w snap shots of RAF service members socializing. Also includes a printed Royal Air Force identity card with b&w picture of Corporal Jordan, dated 23 July 1959. Only a few names of other servicemen are included in the captions; they are: Dave Johnson, "Lofty" Gibbons, Bob Plane, Robby Romano (at Aberdeen), Johnnie Hosford (at Kai Tak). The last photograph, at the rear paste down, is captioned in Chinese and in English, "Mandarin movie stars from Hong Kong, Lam-Foong, Mai-Yeh, Ting-Ming and Pearl Au Kar-Wai". Housed in an oblong red brocade Chinese patterned fabric covered album (14 x 10") with yellow cord ties. The postcards are posted to family back in Margate, Kent, in very good condition. The movie poster a bit ruffled at edges. Altogether in remarkably good condition.

1959. First Edition . Signed. AVEDON, Richard. Observations. Photographs by Richard Avedon. Comments by Truman Capote. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1959). Folio, original white paper-covered boards, original acetate dust wrapper, original slipcase. $5200.First edition of AvedonÂ’s stellar book of portraiture, a distinctive association copy warmly inscribed to film producer Arthur Hornblow, Jr. and his wife Leonora (Bubbles), “For Bubbles & Arthur with admiration, Dick,” featuring commentary by Truman Capote and over 100 photogravures.“Richard Avedon set the standard for portraiture and fashion photography in the second half of the 20th centuryÂ… His photographsÂ… virtually jump off the page with a signature brand of visual impact” (New York Times). “Observations is the culmination of a creative collaboration between Avedon and Alexey Brodovitch that began in 1945, when the imperial art director hired the 22-year-old photographerÂ… as the youngest member of his team at HarperÂ’s Bazaar” (Roth, 148). AvedonÂ’s “later adoption of a seamless white studio background for most of his fashion and portrait photography was at least partly inspired by Mr. BrodovitchÂ’s characteristic use of ‘white space,Â’ a means of making the subject seem suspended and weightless on the page” (Times). Not long after Capote and Avedon finished their work on Observations, they again collaborated in documenting the story of a brutal murder in Kansas, In Cold Blood (1965). This rare presentation/association copy warmly inscribed by Avedon to Arthur Hornblow, Jr., “one of HollywoodÂ’s preeminent movie makers” (New York Times), and his wife Leonora Schinasi Hornblow (“Bubbles”). A lawyer and innovative Broadway producer, Hornblow earned four Oscar-nominations as a film producer, including Gaslight (1944) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Open Book, 174.Images clean and bright, light soiling, edge-wear to near-fine book; some chipping to edges of acetate, moderate rubbing to original slipcase. A near-fine association copy, scarce complete with original acetate wrapper and slipcase.

        Haunting of Hill House

1959. First Edition . JACKSON, Shirley. The Haunting of Hill House. New York: Viking, 1959. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. $2000.First edition of Shirley JacksonÂ’s most famous and influential novel, “the great modern novel of supernatural horror” (Horror: 100 Best 60).“The Haunting of Hill House has been called by no less an authority than Stephen King one of the greatest horror novels of all time. King, in fact, dedicated one of his books, Firestarter, ‘to Shirley Jackson, who never had to raise her voice.Â’ Hill House is eerie, subtle, infinitely chilling. ‘I have always loved to use fear,Â’ she said-and she rarely used it betterÂ… The book, brought out in fall 1959, met with almost unmitigated praise. ‘A goose pimple horror story, and a good one,Â’ said the New York Herald Tribune. ‘Miss Jackson can summon up stark terror, make your blood chill and your scalp prickle,Â’ approved The New York Times, calling her ‘the finest master currently practicing in the genre of the cryptic, haunted tale” (Oppenheimer, Private Demons: The Life of Shirley Jackson, 226-7). “A provocative and unsettling story in which Jackson achieves a perfect blurring of the boundary between supernatural intrusion and psychological projection. Tense, complex and brilliant in its depiction of the alienating power of loneliness and isolationÂ… Filmed intelligently by Robert Wise in 1962” (Barron, Fantasy and Horror 6-181). Fantasy: 100 Best 79. Book fine. Dust jacket near-fine with only very slight edge-wear. An unusually nice, nearly fine copy of this scarce classic.

In her memoir, Shakespeare and Company, Beach tells her story ""with simplicity, freshness and modesty. And in doing so she succeeds in bringing back that whole small—but intensely creative—world around her bookshop and that of her friend, Adrienne MonnierÂ… which was the center of so much French literary activity."" Her book ""is particularly valuable for the many critical insights into Joyce's work and the authentic personal views it provides of the man himself."" After her publication of Ulysses ""on Joyce's birthday, Feb. 2, 1922, Shakespeare and Company was known to writers the world over.
