[A young huntsman holding a dead bird]

[France, mid-18th century]. Red and black chalk, stumping, watermark device. Sheet: 332 x 210 mm. Framed. Provenance: E. Calando (2nd half 19th century) (Lugt 837); purchased from Emil Hirsch & Co., 1959. A charming drawing, presumably by a close follower of Jacques André Portail. Little is known of Portail's training save that he was the son of an architectural engineer in his native Brest. His use and expertise in the use of chalks was inspired by his study of Antoine Watteau, and the present image reflects the subtleties achieved by these masters. Portail was appointed designer to the king in 1738 and was soon a familiar face at Versailles. He oversaw the royal maps and paintings, the Salon exhibitions, and undertook the decoration of the public rooms at the Louvre. Portail also painted portraits and landscapes, and made engravings. Goldfinger originally bore the title The Richest Man in the World and was written in January and February 1958. The story centers on the investigation by MI6 operative James Bond into the gold smuggling activities of Auric Goldfinger, who is also suspected by MI6 of being connected to SMERSH, the Soviet counter-intelligence organization. As well as establishing the background to the smuggling operation, Bond uncovers a much larger plot, with Goldfinger planning to steal the gold reserves of the United States from Fort Knox.Gilbert, A7a.1.2.

        newspaper #8

New York: Jack Green, nd [ca. 1959]. First Edition. Wraps. Good. Tall 4to. Top-stapled legal-sized mimeo. Heavily toned. Fairly brittle. Folded in half with some splitting at the fold. Good. [8]. One of the rarest and more unusual journals of the mimeo revolution, Newspaper published 15 issues between 1957 and 1965. Best remembered today for almost single-handedly establishing the reputation of William Gaddis' THE RECOGNITIONS through Green's thorough and devestating deconstruction of the novel's negative reviews (originally published in Newspaper 12-14, reprinted as FIRE THE BASTARDS in 1992), as well as (most infamously) his 1962 full-page ad in the Village Voice extolling the work's virtues. "[P]art conceptual art, part political tract, and part 'zine [...] 'Green' [a psuedonym] used his underground tabloid for cultural commentary and deliciously satirical (yet superbly well-documented) assaults" (Clay and Phillips p. 77). This issue is comprised of a seven-page story penned by Green on his experiences with Peyote, and a single page of selections by Luigi Pirandello, printed in the Italian and translated. A very fragile production of which not many survived.

        Cortège.

Paris: Pierre Lecuire, 1959. Folio. (28)pp., + 23 plates. From an edition of 170 copies, this is one of twenty-five deluxe copies with an additional suite of pochoir plates. Signed by the author/publisher and the artist below the colophon. Illustrated with twenty-three brightly colored pochoir plates, one of which is double-page, after paintings by André Lanskoy, executed by Maurice Beaufumé, who was responsible for Matisse's Jazz. Lanskoy was a Russian-born painter of the Tachism movement in Paris, where he lived and worked from 1921 until his death in 1976. Tachism, part of the larger Art Informel movement, focused on the intuitive and spontaneous expression of the artist. Cortège is true to form for Lanskoy and Tachism, with its richly colored and boldly arranged abstract shapes - Lanksoy's own interpretation of Lecuire's prose poem. At the time, Lecuire was still early in his career; this was only his fourth published work. Lecuire continued to publish illustrated poetic compositions through the 1980s. Major exhibitions of his work were organized at the French House in Oxford, England in 1977 and at the National Library of France in 2001. Lecuire died in 2013. Issued loose in a multi-colored pochoir wrapper designed by Lanskoy, and housed in a cloth chemise backed in lithographed patterned paper after a design in the book and a cloth slipcase. Visible offsetting from the pochoir, now mitigated by interleaved tissue; chemise and slipcase both show some rubbing and marking, and slipcase splitting at corners. A near fine copy.
