        Goldfinger

Jonathan Cape, London, 1959. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Chopping, Richard (Dust Jacket). VG First Edition hardback in VG- First State unclipped DJ, now protected in an archival Brodart cover. 318 p., illus. (1 map on p. 246), 20 cm. The DJ is first state with a blurb about the plot at the top of the front flap. This was replaced by review comments in later printings. There are three very light foxing marks, once each to the top, side and bottom page ends. Dust Jacket is complete, but with some defects: chipping at the top of the spine, darkening of the spine, a small (1/4") hole toward the bottom of the front hinge and darkening around the edges. The dust jacket is unclipped with 15s. net at the bottom of the front flap. Illustrator: Chopping, Richard (Dust Jacket). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 0 lbs 13 oz.         Bob Dylan's Harmonica from High School, circa 1959

Hohner Echo Harmonica, circa 1959. Very Good condition. In a custom clamshell case. A harmonica that was owned jointly by Dylan and his friend Dale Boutang, played by both during their high school days in Hibbing, Minnesota. Manufactured by M. Hohner, this particular harmonica was chosen because the name of the model was the same as Dylan's girlfriend in high school, Echo Helstrom. The harmonica has been in the possession of Boutang since their school days together, and Boutang has written a letter attesting to the provenance. "I was a classmate and close, personal friend of Bob Zimmerman, who later changed his name to Bob Dylan. Bob and I shared many of our harmonicas and guitars. This one such harmonica, which I ended up keeping from our high school days. I have had [it] in my possession ever since." Perhaps the greatest testament to ownership of this item is Dale Boutang's crudely scrawled name, along the black edge of the harmonica, between the metal plates. Also included are all insurance documents relating to this item while it was on a worldwide tour with the Experience Music Project, a museum of music history founded by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft.

        Goldfinger

London: Cape, 1959. 1st edition, 8vo, 318pp, this copy is in what people are now calling the 1st state with the extra point of detail to the upper left of skull; I have to say that I'm old enough to have been around when this thing came out and I can't recall people ever referring to a "!st state" but there you are, that's James Bond books for you; bit of light spotting to endpapers, a minor bump to upper corner of text block and a very slight lean to text block but by and large a pleasing example, certainly VG Copy in sound DJ that has some ringmark soiling and splashing to the inner faces that, for once, is not visible from the outer; there is some light soiling to lower panel and some general light rubbing to all extrems; but this is a sound DJ without loss and retaining the original price; given the cost of these books we are happy to supply further photos upon request.         The Americans

New York: Grove Press, 1959. First edition of the photographer's masterpiece with 83 black-and-white full-page photogravures. Oblong quarto. An excellent copy in a very good dust jacket that shows wear and chipping. Inscribed by Robert Frank.Jack Kerouac wrote in his preface of The Americans, "Robert Frank… he sucked a sad poem out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world. To Robert Frank I now give this message. You got eyes." Frank's Américains eventually achieved legendary status as "the most renowned photobook of all… It struck a chord with a whole generation of American photographers… Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank's masterpiece" (Parr & Badger I:247). "From the more than 20,000 images that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters… 'With these photographs,' he later wrote, 'I have attempted to show a cross-section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. The view is personal…' Such a simple intention for a book that would so alter the course of modern photography" (Roth, 150).

Youth / [by] Joseph Conrad. Illustrations by Blair Hughes-Stanton.

Kentfield, California: The Allen Press, 1959 - . . . Scarce. . . . Limited Edition - One of 140 copies. The most elaborately colored of the books illustrated by Hughes-Stanton, with eight illustrations each printed in nine colors. . . . Double crown quarto - about 15.5 x 10.5" (39 x 27cm). Bound in the publisher's original binding of cream parchment paper-covered boards with a vignette in grey and blue and a red and white stripe to the upper board, blue lettering to the spine, and a red and white stripe to the lower board. Blue Japanese paper endpapers. Top edges unevenly trimmed, others deckled. Approximately 51pp. The typeface is Goudy Modern, & was hand-set; the paper was hand-made to order & watermarked for the Press by the medieval Richard de Bas mill in France. Printed by hand on an 1833 Acorn-Smith press by Lewis & Dorothy Allen. . . . Illustrated with 8 nine-color linocut illustrations of varying heights. The progressively cut, elimination linocuts were printed from zinc line-blocks made from black stage proofs by Hughes-Stanton. The title page and one other page are printed in red and black, the running title to each page is printed in blue surrounded by a black zigzag design. . . . Lewis Allen, in "The Allen Press Bibliography," notes: "For the illustrator, our English friend Blair Hughes-Stanton was the obvious choice. Never one to accomplish art work simply, he came up with eight nine-color engravings involving delicate register problems. Also, to complete a nine-color process within a time-span of one week, we had to develop a plan to do three colors with one impression. All this was necessary because we damp the handmade paper for printing - a highly desirable technique. / The engraved illustrations are spectacularly dramatic, enhanced by the beautiful (and tamed) French paper. Directors of the Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco gave a special exhibition of those remarkable illustrations. / The binding of white 'parchment paper' is enlivened by some units from the illustrations. Unfortunately, the slip-cases were covered with blue Japanese paper (used also for endsheets) which proved to be too delicate." . . . Very Good Condition - upper board is just lightly soiled (mainly right along upper edge of board), spine somewhat sun darkened with a bit of soiling, two one inch streaks of aqua ink and some other light soiling to lower board, upper corners of boards bumped/dented, head/foot of spine bumped and scuffed, a few small dents and a small chip to lower edges of boards, front inner hinge starting (a one inch tear and a half inch tear to front endpapers along the upper gutter), title page has two several inch creases to lower corner, denting to some protruding page edges, quite clean and bright within. No slipcase. A beautiful copy. . . . Reference: Hughes-Stanton 39. . . . Additional photos available, please just ask. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The first monograph published on de Kooning, inscribed by the artist to prominent art collectors Sydney and Francis Lewis of Virginia. While various limited editions from the artist are relatively common, books genuinely inscribed by de Kooning are scarce, esp. so with so warm an inscription. Much of the Lewis' collection was dispersed by Christie's in 2000, at which time the auction house has this to say about the couple: "Since the 1960s, Sydney and Frances Lewis of Richmond, VA, have been in the forefront of national and international collectors of Post-War painting and sculpture and late 19th and 20th century decorative arts. Their keen knowledge resulting from astute observation, incessant research, and an unquenchable appetite and love for art enabled the Lewises to build an incredible personal collection ranging from Emile Gallé to Willem de Kooning to Gaetano Pesce, all of the highest quality.

        Praha panoramaticka [Prague Panoramic]

Prague: Statni Nakladatelstvi Krasne Literatury Hudby A Umeni. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Sudek's masterpiece. "In a career spanning from the end of World War I to the 1970s, Josef Sudek made many stunning photographs of Prague, ranging from grand vistas to raindrops on a window… He claimed the city of Prague and its surroundings as comprehensively as Eugene Atget claimed Paris and its environs. Unlike Atget, however, Sudek published books… His masterpiece is one of the most singular photobooks ever made, his Praha panoramaticka (Prague Panorama of 1959. "Sudek had always been intrigued by the photographic panorama, but it was the discovery of an old Kodak panoramic camera in a friend's house in the 1950s that inspired him to make the work by which he is now immediately recognized. Of all his books, this one sums up his love of Prague, in all weathers, in all seasons, and not just the historic, public centre, but the most slovenly industrial suburbs, and the scrofulous fringes where the city meets the country. The panoramic camera is a strong unifying element in the imagery, but so is Sudek's democratic eye, which disregards nothing. He treats cathedral and castle in exactly the same way was he treats a factory or a garage. The great public spaces of Prague, which, like the public spaces in any capital, could easily look boring or bombastic in the wrong photographer's hands, are here rendered intimate, while the humblest house or industrial building in a far-flung suburb is monumentalized, graced with Sudek's poetry. His prints are usually dark and a little gloomy, tending towards the romantic, but his feeling for light, weather and space in combination has never been surpassed… [Praha panoamaticka] is a veritable encyclopedia of how to plot, construct and unify a panoramic photograph" (Parr and Badger, The Photobook, Vol I). Prague: Statni Nakladatelstvi Krasne Literatury Hudby A Umeni, 1959. Oblong quarto, original cloth, original dust jacket. Book near-fine with light soiling to cloth, dust jacket with mild toning to front panel, tiny abrasion to rear panel and very light edgewear. An exceptionally good copy, particularly rare in original condition with no restoration.

        Dix pochoirs *

        The Naked Lunch

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1959 First edition, first issue with the original price of "Francs 1500" (later issues have an "18NF" price sticker). Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page: "For John Seeley / William Burroughs". Original publisher's green wrappers; original pictorial dust jacket designed by the author. A near fine copy, with light wear to the extremities, some minor creasing to the unfaded spine; unclipped dust jacket with light wear and minor chipping to the spine ends, bright and clean panels. A bright copy. The Naked Lunch was first published in Paris as part of The Olympia Press's The Traveller's Companion series, which included other literary classics like Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita (1955) and Henry Miller's Quiet Days in Clichy (1956), among others. The Olympia Press was well known for its liberal selection of literature; many English-speaking authors published their books with Olympia in Paris after being rejected by other publishing houses. Even so, Olympia's publisher Maurice Girdoias did not initially want to publish the racy The Naked Lunch, but changed his mind after selections from the novel appeared in literary magazines, including The Chicago Review. The chapters in The Naked Lunch are a series of vignettes, intended to be read independently of one another, that follow drug addict William Lee as he travels to a variety of locations; each story is loosely based on Burroughs' own experiences with drugs in these locations. As John Ciardi commented in his June 27, 1959 review for The Saturday Review, "what Burroughs is writing about is not only the destruction of depraved men by their drug lust, but the destruction of all men by their consuming addictions, whether the addiction be drugs or overrighteous propriety, lasciviousness or sixteen-year-old girls.". Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Soft Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
