        The Naked Lunch

Paris: Olympia. (1959). The first edition of his second book, one of the all-time great drug novels and a high spot of Beat and postwar American literature -- one of the three key volumes of the Beat movement, along with Kerouac's On the Road and Ginsberg's Howl. This is the first issue, without the New Franc stamp over the original old franc price on the rear cover. Published only in paperback in Paris by Maurice Girodias' important small press, in an edition of 5000 copies (comprising both "issues"), three years before it could be published in the U.S. This copy has a small, narrow stain to the lower corner of the first 20 pages and a couple of incidental bends to upper page corners; a near fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket nicked at the crown. A very nice copy of an important book. First Edition. Softcover.

        The Naked Lunch

Paris: Olympia Press. (1959). First. First edition. Rebound in contemporary full black morocco gilt. A tiny stain on the half-title, the front hinge slightly tender, near fine. Briefly Inscribed by Burroughs: "For Fred Warder, William Burroughs." Novels published in France were traditionally bound in wrappers (as this volume was), and then often rebound if the owner deemed it worthy of claiming a place in his library. A nice copy of the true first edition of one of the most influential novels of the post-WWII era, and basis for the David Cronenberg film featuring Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands, and Roy Scheider. .

Song of Peace. Based on poems by Paul Eluard, Nicolas Guillen, Horace, M. Lukenin, Gabriela Mistral, Vitêzlav Nezval, Tu Fu.

New York: Roving Eye Press, 1959 - Single quire of small folio leaves, bound in original linen cloth over boards, printed paper with blockprint illustrations laid down to sides. Covers somewhat stained, with the paper sides a little soiled and creased, internally clean. A very good copy. Original blockprints by Anton Refregier on 9 full page plates and a number of vignette doves. First edition, first impression. From a limited edition of 1000 copies, this one signed by the author and the illustrator, and additionally inscribed by Lowenfels, "For Sol Mandelblatt, these anecdotes of the service, Walter Lowenfels, Mays Landing [Lowenfel's sometime New Jersey home] 1962" This inscription by one of America's most ardent peace activists (himself a card carrying Communist) is certainly ironic, but not ignorantly so; Lowenfels and Mandelblatt were both soldiers who had turned into poets and peace activists through their experience of battle - Lowenfels in the First World War, Mandelblatt in the Second (he was, indeed, awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service while fighting to defend Spain against Hitler and Mussolini as a volunteer in the Lincoln Battalion). A certain community of hard experience gives this inscription and this copy a little more weight and substance, no doubt, than many similar productions of the early 60s.       Simon and Schuster, New York 1959 - FIRST EDITION of Bloch's masterpiece, the basis for the classic Alfred Hitchcock film. "There was a murder case in a small Wisconsin town near the one where I lived -- I had no details concerning it at the time, but I knew that it involved a middle-aged man who murdered several women. Realizing how much gossip there is in a small town and how neighbors tend to pry into every else's affairs, I wondered just what kind of man, and what circumstances, might be involved in such a crime without anyone suspecting, working from these questions, I came up with the plot of PSYCHO. Years later I learned that I'd come pretty close to the actual situation, as brought out after investigations were completed -- except that the actual murderer was also a cannibal, and even more disturbed than my imaginary character" (Robert Bloch). New York: Simon and Schuster, 1959. Octavo, original half-cloth, original dust jacket. Browning to paper as always (poor paper stock); just a hint of edgewear to beautiful dust jacket. An outstanding copy. $2800. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"BEACON GALAXY SCIENCE FICTION NOVELS": Odd John / The Deviates / Troubled Star / Pagan Passions / Virgin Planet / Flesh / The Sex War / A Woman a Day / The Mating Cry / The Male Response / Sin in Space

New York: Universal Publishing & Distributing Corp. Beacon Books / Galaxy Publishing Corporation / Galaxy Science Fiction Novel / Galaxy Prize Selection #s 236, 242, 256, 263, 270, 277, 284, 291, 298, 305 & 312 1st Editions / Printings 1959-1961 ----------11 vintage paperbacks. Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine issued 46 Galaxy Science Fiction Novels as companions to the magazine. The final 11 of the novels (numbers 36 to 46) were issued under the Beacon Books imprint, from 1959 to 1961, and were assigned the same series of book numbers as regular Beacon Books. With 1 gap, the book numbers were 7 digits apart (trivia). It is these 11 BOOKS which are OFFERED HERE AS THE ENTIRE SERIES OF GALAXY NOVELS ISSUED UNDER THE BEACON IMPRINT. Of the 11 books, 4 are First Editions: Pagan Passions (Randall Garrett & Larry M. Harris), Flesh (Philip Jose Farmer), A Woman a Day (Farmer again) and The Male Response (Brian Aldiss). The other 7 books had been previously published, and 4 were given new titles for this series: The Deviates (formerly The Secret People) by Raymond F. Jones, Sex War (formerly The White Widows) by Sam Merwin, The Mating Cry (formerly The House That Stood Still) by A.E. Van Vogt, and Sin in Space (formerly Outpost Mars) by Cyril Judd (Kornbluth & Merril). All of the books were issued with "sexy" cover art, and some racy passages were inserted in the original text, all very mild by today's standards. This run of books was obtained when new by a caring collector, half were read once, very carefully, the other half not read at all. They have been carefully stored and protected for over 50 years, and, but for the minor blemishes to be described below, are close to "as new". Odd John: minor creasing to front cover top and bottom edges, still near fine condition. The Deviates: small bump to front cover top edge, still near fine. Pagan Passions: tiny faint corner crease, still near fine. Flesh: tiny faint corner crease, still near fine. Books not mentioned are close to as new. A nicer collection of these attractive books is difficult to imagine.. Later and/or First Printings. Mass Market Paperback. Near Fine. Illus. by Robert Stanley, Ed Emshwiller & Gerald McConnel (front covers). Note: our prices on Biblio are the LOWEST of any of the sites on which we list our books.
