        Alan M. Turing

Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, Ltd., , 1959. Octavo. Original pale grey boards lettered in green in spine and upper board. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 6 other plates. An excellent copy in a very good jacket, price-clipped, a little tanned at the extremities, light chafing on the spine edges, minor chipping head and tail of the spine and at the corners, short split at the head of the lower panel. First edition. Uncommon, especially so in the jacket, biography, or memorial volume, of the great computer science pioneer, written by his mother, apparently issued in an edition of as little as 500 copies. Mrs Turing maintains that her son's death was an accident, the result of careless handling of chemicals when preparing "non-poisonous weed-killer, and sink-cleaner" at home. Despite this probably emotionally necessary special pleading, this is an interesting work which strives to establish Turing's credentials without reference to his then still-classified war work.

Seven Vintage Hong Kong Police Department Photographs used as illustrations in Hess's "Chasing the Dragon: A Report on Drug Addiction in Hong Kong" (1965)

N.p.; N.d. (ca 1959) - A group of rarely seen images documenting heroin use and manufacture during the height of Hong Kong's dominance in the world heroin trade in the Fifties. Photos are titled "Woman Smoking Heroin by "Chasing the Dragon'"; "Heroin Divan Built of Bamboo and Matting in Dense Undergrowth on a Hillside;" "Heroin Users Preparing to Smoke In A Divan;" "Paraphernalia of a Hong Kong Heroin User;" "Heroin Factory in the Bathroom of a Hong Kong House;" "Another Heroin Factory in a Home;" "Roof Dwellers On Top of an Apartment Building in the Wan Chai District of Victoria." There were no fewer than 15 illustrations, total, in the finished work, so these seven images are by no means complete, but nonetheless comprise a compelling documentary account of 1950s drug culture. Seven glossy black and white photographs produced by the Hong Kong Police Department's Narcotics Bureau. Each photo 5" x 7", mounted, captioned and credited on a page of original manuscript (all images credited to H.K.       Encore Publishing, 1959. 1st edition. Softcover as issued. A card signed by Pinter is laid into this copy. Pinter's second play, produced at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith in 1958, immediately commanded attention, despite its initial critical reviews. Issued in softcovers, it is a fragile item, but this particular copy is in very good condition indeed, showing only light wear at the stapled spine and corners and a few almost imperceptible scratches on the surface.       Giens, 20.

The TURBINE DRIVE BUICK. BUICK'S ALL-TIME BEST. Dealer's Backlit Showroom Display Case Complete with 33 Transparencies Displaying Interior & Exterior Design Choices and Three Upholstery Sample Catalogues.

General Motors Corp., Buick Motor Company / William Melish Harris Association Merchandising Displays, (1959), Flint, MI / Greenwich, CT: - 33 color illustrated transparencies and three upholstery sample catalogues with a total of 61 sample fabrics (includes vinyl upholstery, faux leather, and synthetic cloth interiors in a range of colors). Includes: wooden lighted display cabinet (electrical cord to rear and switch located inside top right side of cabinet), three upholstery interior sample catalogues in three and two ring binders inside drawer (titled: Invicta & Invicta Custom Interiors; Invicta & Invicta Convertible Interiors; Electra 225 Interiors), 33 transparencies (14 displaying "Solid Color" exterior, 14 displaying "Two-Tone" exterior, 4 of interiors of the: LeSabre, Invicta, Electra/ Electra 25 & the Chassis, 1 introductory transparency) to be switched to the front (inserted down underneath front glass) in order to illustrate the different exterior & interior colors available. These high-tech lighted displays were developed by the General Motors sales office as an update of their showroom sales flip board displays used (mostly) in the 1950s. Harris Associates was a division of Plasikorp at the time, and were known for their modern and sleek merchandising displays (even patenting one for carpet stores) which used plastic, and plastic transparencies, along with sample books. Potential Buick customers could come into the dealership, and try out various color combinations for trim, car & upholstery, by overlaying the transparencies and seeing, lit up, exactly how their car would appear. Buick designers were trying to boost sagging sales for their division, so they revised the 1960 models from the 1959 which had been the most outlandish fin-heavy models yet produced. The Buick Invicta and Electra models (both featured in this display) lowered the hoods, placed the headlights side-by-side, installed a front grill with concave vertical slats with the tri-shield Buick logo floating in the center. The tailfin tips were rounded off, and they even revived the famous front fender porthole ornaments from the 1940s and 50s. Buick entirely redisgned the dash with a longer speedometer, lights for coolant temperature, generator and oil, and even installed a new a Mirromagic instrument panel mounted facing up, but reflected on a mirror that could be adjusted. One of the most significant changes was a strictly horizontal chrome strip running from rear bumper to the front wheel opening allowing Buick purchasers to make much easier decisions on two-tone paint treatments -- all of which are displayed here in the lighted case. The color combinations illustrate Turquoise, Chalet Blue, Midnight Blue, Lucerne Green, Silver Mist, Gull Grey, Cordovan, Verde Green, Tampico & Titian Red, and others. In addition there are a number of samples showing the possible convertible top materials. As dealers typically disposed of the previous years' showroom material, dealer showroom materials are quite scarce, and we can find no records of any similar surviving cabinet. Moderate wear to case (rubbing and minor scuffing to edges, light soiling). Transparencies lightly scuffed and scratched (clearly worn). Sample booklet leaves worn and warping. Overall, a VG example. Large wooden backlit display cabinet with front-facing backlit window. Blonde finish to wood, with top-doored well behind housing the thick plastic overlays. Cabinet (at largest sections): 19-5/8" (L) x 11-3/4" (W) x 16-1/4" (H). Transparencies: Oblong format 9-5/8" (+ thumb tab) x 15-1/4" Presumed to be complete but we are unable to verify. 33 clear plastic transparencies, three upholstery sample catalogues: 3 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 19 samples; 4 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 22 samples; 3 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 20 samples.         Young man, do I look like Dennis Stafford?

1959. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink with blue crayon on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 9 January 1959, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Burglar Dennis Stafford had escaped from Wormwood Scrubs in 1956; recaptured in Trinidad in 1957 he was re-incarcerated in Dartmoor, only to escape again. Six weeks later he was arrested in Leicester Square, and this time served the remainder of his sentence. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

The TURBINE DRIVE BUICK... BUICK'S ALL-TIME BEST. Dealer's Backlit Showroom Display Case Complete with 33 Transparencies Displaying Interior & Exterior Design Choices and Three Upholstery Sample Catalogues

Flint, MI / Greenwich, CT:: General Motors Corp., Buick Motor Company / William Melish Harris Association Merchandising Displays,. (1959).. Cabinet (at largest sections): 19-5/8" (L) x 11-3/4" (W) x 16-1/4" (H). Transparencies: Oblong format 9-5/8" (+ thumb tab) x 15-1/4" Presumed to be complete but we are unable to verify. 33 clear plastic transparencies, three upholstery sample catalogues: 3 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 19 samples; 4 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 22 samples; 3 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 20 samples.. Large wooden backlit display cabinet with front-facing backlit window. Blonde finish to wood, with top-doored well behind housing the thick plastic overlays.. Moderate wear to case (rubbing and minor scuffing to edges, light. soiling). Transparencies lightly scuffed and scratched (clearly. worn). Sample booklet leaves worn and warping. Overall, a VG example.. As dealers typically disposed of the previous years' showroom material, dealer showroom materials are quite scarce, and we can find no records of any similar surviving cabinet. . 33 color illustrated transparencies and three upholstery sample catalogues with a total of 61 sample fabrics (includes vinyl upholstery, faux leather, and synthetic cloth interiors in a range of colors).

We Seven. Simon & Schuster New York. 375 Pages. Rag edge pages. 6 sections of Black/white photo plates (matte finish). Someone wrote Ã’Beginning in 1959, NASA began a series of rocket tests with the goal of putting a man in space. Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet pilot, beat Alan Shepard into space by about three weeks in the spring of 1961. By 1963, six of the seven American astronauts had orbited the earth. We Seven, a book by the Mercury program astronauts, is one of the most popular books on the subject./Hardcover. NON SMOKING STORE. My listing INCLUDES PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK for sale. Book VERY GOOD PLUS. No dust jacket issued, or is missing. Boards are grey leatherette with black lettering. Very small creases at top and bottom of spine, other than that virtually no wear showing on covers/spine. Corners straight. Sewn binding, upper edges of pages are red, as issued, not faded. Back end papers show sky and rocket going up. Front end papers show launch towers and rocket just launched. Possibly a very slight sag in book interior, as bottom page corner tips have touched the shelf in a size about 1/8 inch x 1/8. Front board and first free end page have been overzealously opened, and the paper is torn along the spine, revealing the sewn backing, which makes the spine a bit looser from the book, but the sewn cloth backing is not cut or torn, and the cover is not tearing away from the book. ItÕs barely noticeable but for the small 1/8 inch gap in the centre of he colour photo on the end pages, and the slight looseness of the cover. . Aviation

In part, ?Last year both matadors had the finest season of their careers, and Spain was split between ordoñistas and dominguístas. But it seemed improbable that they ever would meet because of an old family feud that persisted even after Ordóñez married Luis Miguel?s sister. In April, however, the feud was resolved, and in June a series of cartels matched the two masters. At Zaragoza, Luis Miguel cut three ears, Ordóñez one. In Barcelona the result was the same, and again at Puerto de Santa María. The luck changed at Tudela ?" Ordóñez cut four ears, Dominguín none. This brought them to Valencia
