Rome: The City and Its People

New York: The Viking Press, 1959. First edition. Hardcover. The second book in his series of books to focus on cities. Like his other books this offers a kaleidoscope like collection of black and white images with a kinetic energy. A fine and tight copy in a near fine dust jacket with a tiny bit of edge wear to the spine ends and corners and with a small crease to both the front and rear flaps. A terrific copy of this brilliant book.

        Saucers - Spring & Summer 1959. UFO / Max Miller's Retained Copy

Flying Saucers International, Los Angeles 1959 - Los Angeles: Flying Saucers International, 1959. First Edition of the Sping & Summer, 1959 issue, Vol. VII, Nos. 1 & 2. This is the copy from the UFOlogy collection of Max Miller, founder of Flying Saucers International and editor of this, the organization's publication. Printed stapled wraps, octavo, 24 pp.; slightly aged-toned; Fine. An extraordinarily scarce piece of UFOlogy history, with unusual association status, being Max Miller's own copy of his publication. His 'Saucers' publication was an early intelligent treatment of a topic which was treated in a dizzying variety of ways in those early years. This issue features the annual gathering at Giant Rock, a Japanese photo of a Transient Lunar Phenomenon looking rather UFOish, a number of sightings reports and quite a lot more, including a Morris K. Jessup piece entitled "UFOlogy: A Plea and A Warning". L103 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Getypte brief aan 'Lieve Jongens [= Jan Wolkers en Annemarie Nauta]'.

27,4 x 20,9 cm. Pagina 9-21 in: Het volle leven. Herinneringen aan Gerard Reve (Amsterdam 2006).

When you're asked a Parliamentary question d'you suppose you're given the answer beforehand?

1959 1959 - Sheet size: 191 × 139 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 5 Nov 1959. Pen and ink and blue pencil crayon on wove paper. On 2 November 1959, Charles Van Doren admitted to cheating on American quiz show Twenty One by being given the answers in advance. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Similarity of the structure of DNA from a variety of sources

1959. <p>Signed by Wilkins and Wilson</p><p>Hamilton, L. D.; Barclay, R. K.; Wilkins, Maurice (1916- ); Brown, G. L.; Wilson, H. R. (1929- ), et al. Similarity of the structure of DNA from a variety of sources. Offprint from J. Biophys. & Biochem. Cytology 5 (1959). 397-404pp. 8 photographic plates. 253 x 175 mm. Original printed wrappers, tiny rust stains on back wrapper. Fine copy, signed by Wilkins and Wilson on the front wrapper. First Separate Edition. The authors showed, by comparing DNA x-ray diffraction patterns from diverse species and tissues, that the patterns were the same; "the presently observable structure of DNA appears, then, to be the same in all cells" (p. 397). The data obtained by the authors&#39; investigations "suggests that DNA cannot exist in significant amounts in forms other than the double-helix" and that "the double helical structure of DNA exists in the cell and is not an artifact" (p. 397). Most of the illustrations show comparisons of DNA x-ray diffraction patterns from different sources.

        The Birthday Party

London: Encore Publishing Co.. (1959). First. First edition. A trifle rubbed, still fine in wrappers. The very uncommon true first edition of Pinter&#39;s first play, Inscribed by him to his first wife Vivien Merchant: "Dec. 59 To Vivien, Love D." The "D." is for David. Pinter, who was also an actor, used the stage name David Baron and almost all his early material inscribed to Merchant is signed thus. Neither this edition, nor the first trade edition in England, published by Methuen, contained a printed dedication. However, the first American edition, The Birthday Party & The Room: Two Plays, which was the first edition to contain a printed dedication, was dedicated to Merchant. Thus, to our lights, this could fairly be considered the dedication copy of the Nobel laureate&#39;s first book -- it is certainly as close to one as could exist. An exceptional association copy of a very uncommon book. Housed in custom full cloth clamshell box. .

The Olympia Press, Paris 1959 - Paris: The Olympia Press, copyrighted 1959, but actually printed (and so stated) in October, 1958, hence - 1958. See scans in that regard. First edition of the "Lollipop" re-issue of "Candy" in response to censor confiscation and burning under that original title. 12mo, green wrappers, 189 pp. See scans for copyright/printing points as noted above; price "Francs 1.200" has been above-stamped with the New Price NF 15" (see scan). Dedication here is "To Master Boon and Master Badj" (see scan), an alteration from the "Candy" dedication, which was "To Mister Hadj and Mister Zoon". Very Good; tape at spine bottom, minor soiling on back cover, very small scale peripheral wear, light dustiness to page edges. See scans. The story of a naive and gorgeous young blond girl - who quickly finds out in exactly what way we men are all, instantly and always, the same - borrows its plot structure from Voltaire's Candide and uses that strangely juxtaposed vehicle to shine a light on all the vagaries of modern western life which beg to be lampooned. Considered by many, then and now, to be a classic of "black (dark) humor". In 2006, Playboy Magazine included Candy on its list of the "25 Sexiest Novels Ever Written". A nice, and rare, copy of one early publishing step en route to the coming-out of this timeless bit of erotic fiction. Please see scans. L50n [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
