        Aaron Siskind Photographs.

Horizon Press, New York 1959 - Introduction by Harold Rosenberg. Folio. Black cloth with silver stamping, pictorial dust jacket. (Ca. 150pp). Numerous illustrations. Very good/good plus. Jacket edgeworn and a bit rubbed, with several archivally closed (on verso) edge tears and one wide chip running along the bottom edge of the front panel (triangular, 8½" wide X 1¼" at left side narrowing to ¼" at right side) -- fairly attractive overall despite obvious flaws. A tight, nice first edition of this scarce first photo collection by the reknowned New York and Chicago photographer (1903-91), who pioneered abstract expressionism in photography. Though not so noted, from the collection of noted Midwest photographer Archie Lieberman (1926-2008), author of "Farm Boy." A handsome copy of this desireable title.         Goodbye, Columbus.

Houghton Mifflin, Boston 1959 - First edition of the author's first book and winner of the National Book Award. Signed by the author on the title page. Light rubbing to the bottom cloth, else fine in a fine dust jacket without the usual toning to the spine. A very sharp copy, uncommon in this condition and signed. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "Goodbye Columbus, a Houghton Mifflin Literary Award, is Philip Roth's first book, and an impressive one. There is blood here and vigor, love and hate, irony and compassion . Mr. Roth has written a perceptive, often witty and frequently moving piece of fiction." The novella is accompanied by five short stories that range in tone from the iconoclastic to the astonishingly tender that illuminate the subterranean conflicts between parents and children and friends and neighbors in the American Jewish diaspora. Saul Bellow wrote upon review of Goodbye, Columbus, "Unlike those of us who come howling into the world, blind and bare, Mr. Roth appears with nails, hair, teeth, speaking coherently. He is skilled, witty, energetic and performs like a virtuoso." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
