        The Paris Review No. 20, Autumn-Winter 1958-1959

New York: The Paris Review, 1959. New York: The Paris Review, 1959 Issue No. 20, first printing. Publishers' light blue and white pictorial paper wrappers, with an illustration of three blonde women by Tom Keogh to the front panel, lettered in black. A near fine copy, with some light wear to the extremities, minor creasing to the spine, a hint of scattered spotting and light soiling to the otherwise bright and clean panels, minor creasing to the top left corner of the rear panel and rear pages of text, slight chip to the top right corner of the front panel. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. "Goodbye, Columbus" is a novella by Philip Roth, first published serially in this issue of The Paris Review on pages 71-179 and later included in his collection of short fiction Goodbye, Columbus, published in the same year. The story presents a humorous and somewhat derisive portrait of the lives of Jewish-Americans. Like many of his works, "Goodbye, Columbus" is semi-autobiographical in nature; a first generation American born to Jewish-Galician parents and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Roth's characters are often influenced by his friends and family and his fiction, like this text, is typically set in Newark. In addition to the first printing of "Goodbye, Columbus," this volume includes "The Building" by William Butler, the "Art of Fiction XXII" interview with James Jones, 5 drawings by Marc Chagall, and 7 drawings by Jean Hélion, as well as 12 poems by various authors.. Soft Cover. Near Fine.

        "Dem Gedächtnis Alfred Kubins", 1959.

. Holzschnitt, Probedruck, 35,5 x 54 cm, signiert, datiert u. betitelt.. 'stilleven'. Originele waskrijttekening.

16,3 x 25,2 cm. Gesigneerd (in krijt gekerfd) 'Gj Komrij 4C' en achterop tweemaal gesigneerd ('Komrij 4C' en 'Gj Komrij 4C'). Getiteld 'stilleven'. Gedateerd '12-10-59'.

        Arabian Sands

London: Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd., 1959. London: Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd.,, 1959. Octavo, (225 x 150 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in terra cotta morocco, raised bands, titles to spine gilt, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. Frontispiece and 46 plates, 8 maps to the text, some full-page, folding map loosely inserted. An excellent copy. First edition. This was Thesiger's first book and "and, in his opinion, his finest" (ODNB) "During the years that I was in Arabia I never thought that I would write a book about my travels … Seven years after leaving Arabia I showed some photographs I had taken to Graham Watson and he strongly urged me to write a book about the desert. This I refused to do … The following day Graham Watson came to see me again, and this time he brought Mark Longman with him. After much argument the two of them persuaded me to try to write this book. Now that I have finished it I am grateful to them, for the effort to remember every detail has brought back vividly into my mind the Bedu amongst whom I travelled, and the vast empty land across which I rode on camels for ten thousand miles" (Introduction).

The Tsisab Ravine and other Brandberg Sites

Chateau De Boissia, Clairvaux, Jura, France: The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation through Trianon Press, 1959. Chateau De Boissia, Clairvaux, Jura, France: The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation through Trianon Press, 1959 Chateau De Boissia, Clairvaux, Jura, France, by the Trianon Press (plate reproduction) and Dijon, France by Imprimerie Darantiere (text) both for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal; 1959. First edition and limited, signed edition. Fine. Remarkably illustrated; color plates from the original rock art in the original varied earth tones (reds, browns, yellows, whites, and black), as well as some in B&W, some as photographs, and other photographs in B&W. Folio, 14½x11¼, quarter morocco and linen; plain acetate jacket. Signed by Abbe Henri Breuil at the limitation page. Unusually, apparently an out-of-series example, one of 120 copies. Of this book, 1,000 were unsigned, 30 more were to have been numbered in roman numerals, 90 more in standard arabic numerals, and 26 were to have been lettered, with all three of the latter forms signed by the Abbe Breuil. This copy is in the quarter leather and linen binding of the numbered and signed issues, and is signed by Breuil at the limitation page, though after the word "No." on that page, there is no numeral, roman or arabic, filled in by Breuil. Scan of the limitation page is available. A remarkable work of artistic beauty and rich, yet readable scholarship on the cave art found at the The Brandberg, a vast (25 km by 21 km) monadnock rising from the sparse plains and deserts of Namibia. Apparently a source of religious inspiration to aboriginal populations of the region for thousands of years, the gorges, ravines and rock faces of The Brandberg ("Fire Mountain") are filled with cave art ranging in age from several hundred to unknown thousands of years (but definitely, for many, more than 1,800 years, a point of age determination beyond which dating becomes impossible at these sites, for technical reasons). Noted French palaeoarchaelogist Abbe Henri Breuil and others spent much time tracing, cataloguing and recreating these drawings. It's a tossup whether the non-verbal or verbal experience of this volume is the greater thrill. Beautiful edition designed by Arnold Fawcus and produced by the Trianon Press; No. 3 in the Rock Paintings of Southern Africa series. Fine, flawless, pristine in a like clear acetate jacket; has the aspect of a virtually new production, though it is nearly half a century old. L45

        Stanford White Autograph Letter Signed

Autograph letter signed by architect Stanford White. "To [Marie] Anais [Casey], believed to have been romantically involved with White by his biographer, Aline B. Saarinen. With a typewritten letter signed from Saarinen to Casey's daughter requesting additional background information on her mother's affair with White. The handwritten letter reads, "My dear dear Anais What do you mean? You know my services are always at your disposal- but in such a case as this I should feel very badly indeed if you did not consider what I have done for you as a labor of love & I am sure that at least in this case you can & will so accept it. To have pleased you - is all the reason I care of want for. ever yours Stanford White." In near fine condition, matted and framed. The Saarinen typed ALS dated November 2, 1959 to Ruth Watkins (Casey's daughter) seeks additional background information on her mother's affair with White, noting her mother was quite young when she met White, and the reticence of women in that era to discuss personal matters. Stanford White was an American architect and partner in the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. He designed a long series of houses for the wealthy, and numerous public, institutional, and religious buildings. His design principles embodied the "American Renaissance" and is one of the great American architects of the 19th century.

Fuchs? Who's Fuchs? My name's Alfred Hinds

, 1959. 1959. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 24 June 1959, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Atom-bomb spy Klaus Fuchs was released, while small-time crook and serial prison escaper Alfie "Houdini" Hinds was still at large. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Original Watercolour Artwork for the 1959 Paperback Edition of The Dark Frontier

1959.. 1959., 1959. The watercolour illustration measures 53cm x 34cm and is SIGNED by the artist, Oliver Brabbins, on the lower left. It is mounted and framed, the total size of the yellow metal effect frame is 75.5cm x 55cm. A striking design of the cover for the First Paperback Edition of this title. Based on the development of weaponry in the year 1936, The Dark Frontier was one of the first novels to predict the invention of a nuclear bomb and its consequences. Ambler evidently had no knowledge of what producing an atomic bomb may involve (even professional physicists at the time had only a vague idea).
