Goldfinger

London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. A very sharp copy of the seventh novel in the James Bond series. Goldfinger originally bore the title The Richest Man in the World. Based upon American gold tycoon Charles W. Englehard, Fleming named his villain after British architect Erno Goldfinger. When the actual Goldfinger found out his name was being used, he threatened to sue Fleming, and the matter was ultimately settled out of court. A best-seller upon its release, it became the third James Bond film in 1964 starring Sean Connery.

Les Cahiers du Jazz. Revue Musicale. 1 - 16/17.

Paris: Les Nouvelles Editions Musicales Modernes, 1959-64 - 17 issues in 16 volumes, octavo. Original printed card wraps. Housed in a black, leather-entry slip-case. Some rubbing to the wraps, occasional toning, one or two short edge-splits in the text, and a few check-marks in the discographies, but overall a very good set. Occasional notation in the text. First editions of the complete run of Malson, Filipacchi and Tenot's highly influential periodical. Consciously modelled on the Cahiers du Cinema, the content was of unimpeachable seriousness, and unquestionable excellence. Contributors include Malson, Michel-Claude Jalard, Gunther Schuller, Jean Clouzet and Michel Delorme, with discographies by Jorgen Grunnet Jepsen. While condition is perhaps not ideal, this is an extremely difficult run to complete, here attractively presented. [Attributes: First Edition]

        INVITATION TO A BEHEADING

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, (1959). First American edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. 8vo. Original quarter-cloth over boards. Very good in like jacket. Some moderate chipping to head and heal of jacket spine, with attendant rubbing to book tips. Some edgewear to DJ with several small closed tears. Unclipped. Overall, clean and sound. INSCRIBED by Dmitri Manbokov (Vladimir and Vera's son and the translator of this book) to Matthew Brucolli: "For talented, loyal, hard-working, / long-suffering Matt Bruccoli / with warm wishes / Dmitri Nabokov / Monteaux, 13 July 1986. A significant association of the first of Nabokov's Russian-language novels to be translated into English. Inscribed by the book's translator, Nabokov's son Dmitri, to bibliographer Matthew Brucolli (1931-2008). Brucolli studied English with Nabokov at Cornell and would go on to publish several books under his own imprint based on Nabokov's Ithaca lectures. The bibliographer also covered Nabokov for the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY. In addition, Brucolli and Dmitri would go on to edit an edition of Nabokov's SELECTED LETTERS (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989), a project they were likely in the midst of at the time of this inscription. NAKED LUNCH

Grove Press (1959), New York - 8vo. Original black board with half cloth spine. Near fine in a very good plus jacket. DJ has small closed tear to rear panel. Mild edgewear. Trace rubbing. Else remarkably bright and retaining its original $6.00 flap price. Tiny bump to one corner of book. Else sharp and sound. Topstain unmarred. Very handsome overall. INSCRIBED by Burroughs to title page: "For Michael / Griffin / all the best / moments / William S. Burroughs / 3/16/91." First US edition / printing (both book and jacket) of the Beat masterpiece, which - copyright date aside - was not actually published in this edition until 1962, which also contains the first book appearances of Burroughs' "Deposition: Testimony concerning a Sickness," and "Letter from a Master Addict to Dangerous Drugs." A landmark novel, it led to several important court decisions on indecency and censorship. Certainly Burroughs' best-known work (it was successfully adapted by David Cronenberg into a fine film of the same name), it is also arguably Burroughs' best and most enduring as well. One of 3500 copies. And incidentally, there are no "states" of this jacket, contrary to some dealer's listings. There are only later printings of the jacket married to earlier editions of the book; see Shoaf 2b-i. [Maynard and Miles 2Ab]. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Miguel Street is the Bowery, the Tenderloin, and the Catfish Row of Trinidad's Port of Spain–its citizens a loony multitude whose knavery often rises from real kinship with pathos and tragedy. . . . Naipaul is at his best in these swift caricatures of human depravity" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Les Affiches Originales des Maitres de l'Ecole de Paris: Braque - Chagall - Dufy - Leger - Matisse - Miro - Picasso

[Paris]: Andre Sauret, 1959. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. 4to, Yellow cloth-covered boards with titles stamped in brilliant purple on the upper board and spine; gorgeous full-color dust jacket; publisher's clear acetate dust cover; pp. 15, 1-102 (single-sided plates), 239-[247] (Catalogue Descriptif), [1] (Colophon). Book is fine, jacket very nearly so (touch of rubbing at the edges), and likewise the acetate dust cover. One of the most beautiful books on lithography ever printed, and a true labor of love. Fernand Mourlot, a third-generation Parisian printer, expanded into lithography in the 1920s, and worked directly with some of the top artists of the day, including those presented here. The text was set by hand at the Imprimerie Nationale, and the reproductions lovingly crafted at Mourlot Freres. Five lithographs inserted at the rear were created by the artists during the course of work on the book. The dust jacket cover was created by Matisse in honor of the hundred-year anniversary of the press. The works here include the seminal (such as Matisse's "Jazz" poster), but also include posters produced purely as advertising; without exception, however, they are stunning works of art. The bibliographic detail in the descriptive catalogue includes the number of originals produced, etc. Truly an exceptional book.

        Alan M. Turing

Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, Ltd., , 1959. Octavo. Original pale grey boards lettered in green in spine and upper board. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 6 other plates. An excellent copy in a very good jacket, price-clipped, a little tanned at the extremities, light chafing on the spine edges, minor chipping head and tail of the spine and at the corners, short split at the head of the lower panel. First edition. Uncommon, especially so in the jacket, biography, or memorial volume, of the great computer science pioneer, written by his mother, apparently issued in an edition of as little as 500 copies. Mrs Turing maintains that her son's death was an accident, the result of careless handling of chemicals when preparing "non-poisonous weed-killer, and sink-cleaner" at home. Despite this probably emotionally necessary special pleading, this is an interesting work which strives to establish Turing's credentials without reference to his then still-classified war work.

Seven Vintage Hong Kong Police Department Photographs used as illustrations in Hess's "Chasing the Dragon: A Report on Drug Addiction in Hong Kong" (1965)

N.p.; N.d. (ca 1959) - A group of rarely seen images documenting heroin use and manufacture during the height of Hong Kong's dominance in the world heroin trade in the Fifties. Photos are titled "Woman Smoking Heroin by "Chasing the Dragon'"; "Heroin Divan Built of Bamboo and Matting in Dense Undergrowth on a Hillside;" "Heroin Users Preparing to Smoke In A Divan;" "Paraphernalia of a Hong Kong Heroin User;" "Heroin Factory in the Bathroom of a Hong Kong House;" "Another Heroin Factory in a Home;" "Roof Dwellers On Top of an Apartment Building in the Wan Chai District of Victoria." There were no fewer than 15 illustrations, total, in the finished work, so these seven images are by no means complete, but nonetheless comprise a compelling documentary account of 1950s drug culture. Seven glossy black and white photographs produced by the Hong Kong Police Department's Narcotics Bureau. Each photo 5" x 7", mounted, captioned and credited on a page of original manuscript (all images credited to H.K. A vintage 8 by 10 silver gelatin contact sheet print by the great Bunny Yeager, from a session with model Marcy Lane, circa 1963 and printed shortly thereafter. The print is about fine, showing some wear around the edges and a few slight surface creases and imperfections; four shots are circled in black and/or orange marker, with publication rights stickers along the upper and lower edge, and Bunny's studio address to the lower middle. Additionally signed by the photographer on the print recto. This image was reproduced on page 242 of 'Bunny Yeager's Darkrooom: Pinup Photography's Golden Era" (Rizzoli; 2012). There are not a great many available vintage prints from this great American photographer; this is a particularly appealing example. Provenance on Request.
