Rango : Posse from Hell [large format pre-production TV series script / portfolio]

[Spartan Productions, 1959], 1959, Hardback, Book Condition: Very Good, First EditionA large format publication in fair to good condition. It is spiral-bound in elaborately blind-tooled full leather. There is some wear to the top of the spiral spine. In a portfolio leather folder with imitation cowhide on the front cover. The portfolio folder is somewhat edge-worn. The pages are impressively produced on colour-illustrated stiff card, with slight dulling around the edges. Some of the introductory and credit pages have separated from the binding and have become brittle and edge-worn. Remains particularly well-preserved overall. Futher images, and additional bibliographic information available on request. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 0 pages; Pre-production or proposal portfolio for a western TV series entitled 'Rango' featuring the script for a presumed pilot episode 'Posse from Hell', with a selection of proposed storylines for future episodes. Three pages of production credits indicate that this item was published in 1959, by Spartan Productions, with Blake Edwards credited as director. Gordon Oliver is credited in the leading role of Rango. Clair Huffaker is credited as writer, indicating that the script is based on his 1958 novel, 'Posse from Hell'. This novel was eventually adapted into a Universal film in 1961 starring Audie Murphy and directed by Herbert Coleman. Also included is the album cover for the original theme music written by Hank Mancini. Unfortunately the LP is lacking. Hank (Henry) Mancini was involved in a dispute regarding the 1961 film with Universal's music director, Joseph Gershenson, who reused the music scores from This Island Earth (1955) and It Came from Outer Space (1953), rather that the original music. Therefore, it appears that Rango: Posse from Hell was the pilot for a proposed TV series that was eventually adapted into a film produced by Gordon Kay and Edward Muhl for Universal. In the film version Rango's name is changed to Banner Cole. There was also a 1967 Western/Comedy TV series called Rango. Other than the title of the main character, there does not appear to be any link to between these productions, although is is possible some elements may have been adapted. Subjects: Film -- Westerns -- TV series -- Scripts -- 1950s -- 1960s -- Television -- History -- United States. Physical description: Unpaginated. Impressively colour illustrated throughout. 38 x 54cm.

Paris: Les Nouvelles Editions Musicales Modernes,, 1959-64. 1 - 16/17. 17 issues in 16 volumes, octavo. Original printed card wraps. Housed in a black, leather-entry slip-case. Occasional notation in the text. Some rubbing to the wraps, occasional toning, one or two short edge-splits in the text, and a few check-marks in the discographies, but overall a very good set. First editions of the complete run of Malson, Filipacchi and Tenot's highly influential periodical. Consciously modelled on the Cahiers du Cinema, the content was of unimpeachable seriousness, and unquestionable excellence. Contributors include Malson, Michel-Claude Jalard, Gunther Schuller, Jean Clouzet and Michel Delorme, with discographies by Jorgen Grunnet Jepsen. While condition is perhaps not ideal, this is an extremely difficult run to complete, here attractively presented.

        Alan M. Turing

Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, Ltd., , 1959. Octavo. Original pale grey boards lettered in green in spine and upper board. Portrait frontispiece and 6 other plates. Small bruise to the lower edge of the upper board, slightly crumpled head and tail of the spine, else a very good copy. First edition. Uncommon biography, or memorial volume, of the great computer science pioneer, written by his mother; apparently issued in an edition of as little as 500 copies. Mrs. Turing maintains that her son's death was an accident, the result of careless handling of chemicals when preparing "non-poisonous weed-killer, and sink-cleaner" at home. Despite this probably emotionally necessary special pleading, this is an interesting work which strives to establish Turing's credentials without reference to his then still-classified war work.

Advise and Consent - FIRST US & WORLD PRINTING

Doubleday New York 1959 - A unique and highly individual FINE BINDING first impression of the US world first hardback edition of the author's first novel. The Pulitzer winner is offered in an exceptionally beautiful one-off special binding, and it merits a careful description. The text block is the first impression, which has been given a perfect gilt top. The sheets are from the US first edition, rebound between very firm boards which are part covered in a blue grey cloth, and the corners, the spine, and a third of the front and back are in a smooth grain substantial leather, in a matching blue grey. The spine has five raised hubs and five gilded heraldic eagles. The title is gilded upon a black grained leather, which has been most skilfully integrated into the spine. On the front lower corner the initials 'R. K.' have been stamped and gilded. Unusually, the first edition dust jacket has been securely bound in at the back of the book. Even the jacket's flaps are included, and the price is printed with a pencil adjustment beside it. The endpapers are hand marbled. The text of this fine novel is thus presented in a secure and sturdy format, which befits what is arguably the most brilliant post war novel about American politics. This superb example of a one-off library binding is built to last. Faults? Apart from evidence of a degree of gentle usage, and taking into account the age of the book, I would rate this Fine. But there is a very slight pink speckle, away from the text, on page 13, which is the first page of the novel. However, this does not detract from the sumptuous overall impression this highly collectable copy presents. Anyone wishing for a permanent and very aesthetic copy of this superb Pulitzer Prize winning novel need search no further. It is stunning. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
