        The Birthday Party

London: Encore Publishing Co.. (1959). First. First edition. A trifle rubbed, still fine in wrappers. The very uncommon true first edition of Pinter's first play, Inscribed by him to his first wife Vivien Merchant: "Dec. 59 To Vivien, Love D." The "D." is for David. Pinter, who was also an actor, used the stage name David Baron and almost all his early material inscribed to Merchant is signed thus. Neither this edition, nor the first trade edition in England, published by Methuen, contained a printed dedication. However, the first American edition, The Birthday Party & The Room: Two Plays, which was the first edition to contain a printed dedication, was dedicated to Merchant. Thus, to our lights, this could fairly be considered the dedication copy of the Nobel laureate's first book -- it is certainly as close to one as could exist. An exceptional association copy of a very uncommon book. Housed in custom full cloth clamshell box. .

        Lollipop

The Olympia Press, Paris 1959 - Paris: The Olympia Press, copyrighted 1959, but actually printed (and so stated) in October, 1958, hence - 1958. See scans in that regard. First edition of the "Lollipop" re-issue of "Candy" in response to censor confiscation and burning under that original title. 12mo, green wrappers, 189 pp. See scans for copyright/printing points as noted above; price "Francs 1.200" has been above-stamped with the New Price NF 15" (see scan). Dedication here is "To Master Boon and Master Badj" (see scan), an alteration from the "Candy" dedication, which was "To Mister Hadj and Mister Zoon". Very Good; tape at spine bottom, minor soiling on back cover, very small scale peripheral wear, light dustiness to page edges. See scans. The story of a naive and gorgeous young blond girl - who quickly finds out in exactly what way we men are all, instantly and always, the same - borrows its plot structure from Voltaire's Candide and uses that strangely juxtaposed vehicle to shine a light on all the vagaries of modern western life which beg to be lampooned. Considered by many, then and now, to be a classic of "black (dark) humor". In 2006, Playboy Magazine included Candy on its list of the "25 Sexiest Novels Ever Written". A nice, and rare, copy of one early publishing step en route to the coming-out of this timeless bit of erotic fiction. Please see scans. L50n [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Similarity of the structure of DNA from a variety of sources.

1959 - Signed by Wilkins and WilsonHamilton, L. D.; Barclay, R. K.; Wilkins, Maurice (1916- ); Brown, G. L.; Wilson, H. R. (1929- ), et al. Similarity of the structure of DNA from a variety of sources. Offprint from J. Biophys. & Biochem. Cytology 5 (1959). 397-404pp. 8 photographic plates. 253 x 175 mm. Original printed wrappers, tiny rust stains on back wrapper. Fine copy, signed by Wilkins and Wilson on the front wrapper. First Separate Edition. The authors showed, by comparing DNA x-ray diffraction patterns from diverse species and tissues, that the patterns were the same; "the presently observable structure of DNA appears, then, to be the same in all cells" (p. 397). The data obtained by the authors' investigations "suggests that DNA cannot exist in significant amounts in forms other than the double-helix" and that "the double helical structure of DNA exists in the cell and is not an artifact" (p. 397). Most of the illustrations show comparisons of DNA x-ray diffraction patterns from different sources. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Bridge on the Drina [Na Drini cuprija] [Signed Twice]

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1959. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good + copy of the First US edition (light rubs to the spine ends and board corners), in a Very Good example of the fragile and relatively scarce dust jacket (modest edge wear, chipping to the spine ends and to the front panel where it meets the spine head, short closed tear to the front panel's upper edge, a short closed tear to each of the upper and lower edges of the rear panel with these rear panel tears along with the spine head having tape repairs on the dust jacket's verso, and a clip to the front panel's lower corner -- but the jacket is not price clipped), SIGNED TWICE BY IVO ANDRIC on the title page, one signature being his native signature and the other being the Anglicized version of his signature. One of Yugoslavia's greatest, and one of its most influential, writers, Andric was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the epic force with which he has traced themes and depicted human destinies drawn from the history of his country", with The Bridge on the Drina playing a large measure in his winning the Prize. In presenting the Prize to Andric, Anders Österling, then the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, recalled Andric's service as Yugoslavia's Ambassador to Berlin during World War II and his survival of German bombing and his having to flee his country upon Germany's invasion of it. Österling goes went on to state: "Forced to retreat during the German occupation, Andric nevertheless managed to survive and to write three remarkable novels. These are generally called the Bosnian trilogy, although they have nothing in common but their historical setting, which is symbolized by the crescent and the cross. The creation of this work, in the deafening roar of guns and in the shadow of a national catastrophe whose scope then seemed beyond calculation, is a singularly striking literary achievement. The publication of the trilogy did not take place until 1945." After describing "The Bridge on the Drina" [the first installment in Andric's Bosnian Trilogy, followed by "Travnicka hronika" (Bosnian Story) and then "Gospodjica" (The Woman from Sarajevo)] as "his masterpiece", Österling stated: "Na Drini cuprija is the heroic story of the famous bridge which the vizier Mehmed Pasha had built during the middle of the sixteenth century near the Bosnian city of Visegrad. Firmly placed on its eleven arches of light-coloured stone, richly ornamented, and raised in the middle by a superstructure, it proudly perpetuated the memory of an era throughout the following eventful centuries until it was blown up in the First World War. The vizier had wanted it to be a passage that would unite East and West in the centre of the Ottoman Empire. Armies and caravans would cross the Drina on this bridge, which for many generations symbolized permanence and continuity underneath the contingencies of history. This bridge became the scene for every important event in this strange corner of the world. Andric's local chronicle is amplified by the powerful voice of the river, and it is, finally, a heroic and bloody act in world history that is played here." In his writing, Andric drew on the history of his native Bosnia (where he was born to Croat parents). This epic novel spans a period of Centuries, beginning during the Ottoman Empire's dominance of the region, with a special focus on the Muslims and the Christians living in Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the most important books from this major writer (scarce to the market in first edition), and considered by many to be his Masterpiece, this copy has been signed twice by Ivo Andric on the title page. Signed copies of the book are exceedingly scarce and, of course, copies signed by Andric in both versions of his signature are even more so. A Very Good + copy of Ivo Andric's debut novel (the other two installments in the Bosnian Trilogy having been published in the same year), his Masterpiece and his best-known work, SIGNED BY IVO ANDRIC USING TWO VERSIONS OF HIS SIGNATURE. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE INDEED.
