The Genetic Control and Cytoplasmic Expression of ?Inducibility? in the Synthesis of β-galactosidase by E. col

      J. Mol. Biol. 1 (1959) 165-78. PAMPHLET. First separate editions. Original wrappers. Offprint. Very good. Staples little rusted. Garrison and Morton 6894 The PaJaMo experiment of PArdee, JAcob, and MOnod broke the impasse in Crick and Brenner's comprehension of how information in the sequence of bases in DNA came to be expressed as a sequence of the amino acids in protein, and thus led to the theory of the messenger and the solution of the coding problem (Judson 390). This was recorded definitively in The Genetic Control and Cytoplasmic Expression of Inducibility in the Synthesis of ?-galactosidase by E. coli, J. Mol. Biol. 1 (1959) 165-78.       Mourlot, Fernand. ART IN POSTERS: THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL POSTERS OF BRAQUE - CHAGALL - DUFY - LEGER - MATISSE - MIRO - PICASSO. Monte Carlo, MONACO & New York: Andre Sauret Editeur & George Braziller, Publisher, 1959. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Illustrated Jacket. Art Monograph. Near Fine/Near Fine. 250pp, 102 color illustrations. Text in English. Issued in 1959, this is the beautifully produced survey of one hundred and two lithographically printed post-war exhibition posters produced (primarily by the renowned Parisian fine art publishers Mourlot Freres) for Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso. Each image is sumptuously reproduced photolithographically here in miniature by Mourlot, creating essentially one hundred and two original graphics. A strikingly handsome example in dust jacket of this notoriously fragile, poorly bound volume whose textblock is tight and bright with no loose pages.         After his ?return from the Soviet Union and Poland,? Vice President Nixon thanks publisher James Copley for his ?several contributions to the success of the trip?? ? In Moscow, Nixon and Khrushchev had argued publically, accusing each other of threats

Washington, September 7, 1959. 8" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ?Dick? as Vice President, 1p, 8? x 10.5?. On Vice Presidential stationery. Washington, September 7, 1959. To James S. Copley, La Jolla, California. Headed ?Personal.? Two file holes at top margin. Fine condition. In full, ?Only the combination of long Senate sessions and a heavy travelling schedule since our return from the Soviet Union and Poland has kept me from getting this note of to you sooner to express my deep appreciation for your several contributions to the success of the trip. The complete and generous coverage by the Copley Press, both editorially and in the news columns, was most gratifying, I can assure you. It was a pleasure to have Rembert James aboard as a member of the travelling press, and the suggestions he passed along as a result of his previous experiences in the Soviet Union were most helpful.?Herb, of course, did his usual superb job, and, because of the delicacy of situations which arose and conditions which were often adverse as far as the press corps were concerned, his skill, competence and counsel were even more valuable than would normally be the case. I hope there will be an opportunity fir us to get together for a personal visit in the near future. In the meantime, Pat joins me in sending our very best wishes to you and Jeanie.?It was during his trip to the Soviet Union that Vice President Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev engaged in what became known as the ?Kitchen Debate.? On July 24, 1959, in Moscow, Nixon formally opened the American National Exhibition and soon, at a kitchen display, the discussion turned to capitalism, free exchange of ideas, summit meetings, rockets, and ultimatums. The July 25th ?New York Times? headlined ?Nixon and Khrushchev Argue / in Public as U.S. Exhibit Opens; / Accuse Each Other of Threats.?Herb Klein had worked for the Copley newspapers before and after working for Nixon in various press-related roles, from his 1946 congressional campaign to the White House.A conservative Republican, James S. Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the ?San Diego Union,? ?The San Diego Union-Tribune,? and the ?San Diego Evening Tribune? from 1947 until his death in 1973. He was Chairman of the Board of The Copley Press, a newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications."

        The Star Conquerors

Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, 1959 Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, 1959. First Edition, and so stated. Octavo, 215 pp, cloth binding in the Mel Hunter-illustrated jacket. pictorial jacket. A Near Fine copy, with just tiny points of wear at corner tips, top page edges slightly darker than bottom edges as with almost every copy, in a better than VG jacket - though it is price-clipped - whose main flaw is small scale roughening at spine ends, corners just touched. Nicely preserved book and jacket. The first novel of science fiction icon Ben Bova, from the equally iconic Winston series of juvenile sci-fi titles, a memorable 37-title group issued between 1952 and 1961. Many of us remember the Winston stories with a great deal of nostalgia. The Star Conquerors - which also turned out to be the first of three titles in what would become Bova's "Watchmen" series - is among the rarest, and most sought after, of the Winston books, in one of the better-preserved copies.         Theatrical Window Card Poster for:] REQUIEM FOR A NUN.

New York: The Theatre Guild / Golden Theatre, [1959]. - Folio (22 x 14") highly pictorial window card, printed on recto only of stiff card. Artwork by noted Broadway poster artist Tom Morrow. Lightly tanned at extreme edges with a minor dust mark at lower edge, else near fine. A window card promoting the short-lived Broadway run of Faulkner's sole venture into commercial theatre, produced at the John Golden Theatre, directed by Tony Richardson and adapted by Faulkner and Ruth Ford from Faulkner's novel. Graphically strong, and like most Broadway posters of this era, very scarce even before factoring in the brevity of this play's American run of 43 performances. The poster simply credits this as William Faulkner's "Requiem for a Nun," with no reference to the writing contribution of Ruth Ford, who also starred in the role of the former Temple Drake. In addition to Ford, the play featured Zachary Scott, Beatrice Reading, and Scott McKay, among others. Ms. Reading was nominated for a Tony in the category of Featured Actress in a Play for her portrayal of the character Nancy Mannigoe.
