Que Hanqian Xian Sheng shu Qian zi wen. Xin mou si yue Wu Jingheng ti. [The Thousand Character Classic in the hand of Master Que Hanqian]. Cover title from the brush of Wu Jingheng, April, 1951

Taipei: Bo yun zhuang, January, 1959. First edition thus. Near Fine. Five folio volumes, unpaginated, bound in the traditional fashion, each volume with paper label on the upper cover, in royal blue folding case with applied title label ?"from the brush of Wu Jingheng?". This copy with two holographic presentation notes on the recto of the first leaf in volume one. The first note, dated October 22 (presumably 1959), signed and sealed by the author/ calligrapher Que Hanqian, presents the set to ?"Elder Brother Chiang-kuo?" (1910 - 1988), then a high functionary of the Republic of China in Taiwan, and later premier and president succeeding his father Chiang Kai-shek. The second note, in the hand of Chiang Ching-kuo and dated October 24 (presumably 1959) presents the volumes to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cline. Two short tears at the upper cover of volume one, folding case lightly soiled. Cline was C.I.A. Station Chief in Taipei through 1959 and thereafter head of the CIA's Directorate of Intelligence in Washington, D.C. He played a crucial role in the Cuban Missile Crisis when the Directorate concluded that the Soviet Union had shipped nuclear warheads to Cuba; Cline was among those who informed President John F. Kennedy of the development. General Que Hanqian (1902 - 1971), was a military man who rose to the top ranks of his profession as commander of the Republic of China Army. In retirement he turned to Buddhism and perfection of his calligraphic skills. His version of the classic Qian Zi Wen, which condenses the wisdom of the Chinese sages in one thousand characters with none repeated, has been used by calligraphers since the sixth century as a showcase for their prowess with the brush. This example presents the text in four styles; antique square print (volumes one and two), square print, cursive, and abstract grass cursive. Wu Jingheng (1865 - 1953), who contributes the the cover title and preface, was a noted scholar (philology) and member of the Academia Sinica, as well as an eminent calligrapher. He moved to Taiwan in 1948 following the defeat of the Republic of China government by the forces of Mao Zedong. Que Hanqian apparently solicited Wu Jingheng for his contributions eight years before publication. Although no limitation is expressed, it seems unlikely that many copies were produced. OCLC locates 9 (as of April 12, 2015).

Jack Kerouac Thrice-Signed Check in the first weeks of production of his brilliant 1959 short ?The Beat Generation,? released as ?Pull My Daisy?

Northport, New York, January 16, 1959. 6" x 2.75". "Partly Printed Check Signed ?Jack Kerouac,? payable to ?Jack Kerouac,? and endorsed on verso ?Jack Kerouac,? filled out by Kerouac for ?One Hundred? Dollars on his account at Security National Bank, Northport, New York, 6? x 2.75?. Tiny bank cancellation holes on payee?s name, light bank stamping on endorsement, signature untouched! Fine condition. ?Pull My Daisy? ?" originally called ?The Beat Generation? ?" was a 16mm black & white film, written and narrated by Jack Kerouac, shot in the loft studio of painter Alfred Leslie in Manhattan from January to April 1959. Katie Mills wrote in ?The Road Story and the Rebel? (Carbondale, Ill.: Southern Illinois University Press, 2006) in part, ?The concept for ?Pull My Daisy? was to make an art film version of ?On the Road?; it evolved into a twenty-seven-minute film about a Beat family at home. [Robert] Frank brought in the painter Alfred Leslie as his co-director, and when Leslie heard a tape recording of Kerouac reading his work-in-progress, ?The Beat Generation,? he decided to substitute Kerouac?s ?On the Road? with ?The Beat Generation. Shooting on ?Pull My Daisy? began on 2 January 1959. Kerouac?s seemingly unscripted voice-over narrates the return home of an itinerant railroad brake man, Milo, to his wife and son, where they host an evening visit of a bishop and his family, along with Milo?s Beat poet friends ... ?The film title comes from the poem ?Pull My Daisy,? written by [Allen] Ginsberg, [Jack] Kerouac, and Neal Cassidy. The poem was put to music by David Amram and sung on the film?s soundtrack by Anita Ellis, and its spirit and words permeate the film...? Originally to be called ?The Beat Generation,? the title was changed to ?Pull My Daisy? at the last moment when MGM released a film called ?The Beat Generation? on July 3, 1959, with the tagline ?Behind the Weird ?Way-Out? World of the Beatniks!? ?Pull My Daisy? was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1996 as being ""culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.?"

Significance of Electromagnetic Potentials in the Quantum Theory" AND "Further Considerations on Electromagnetic Potentials in the Quantum Theory" in Physical Review Volume 115 (3) Aug. 1, 1959, pp. 485-491 AND Volume 123 (4) August 15, 1961, pp. 1511-1524

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE FIRST TWO PAPERS ON THE AHARANOV-BOHM EFFECT, the assertion that a that a magnetic field affects the quantum properties of an electron in a way that is forbidden by classical physics. In the first paper they write, "…contrary to the conclusions of classical mechanics, there exist effects of potentials on charged particles, even in the region where all the fields (and therefore the forces on the particles) vanish" (PR 115, 1959). The American physicist David Bohm, and his Israeli graduate student Yakir Aharonov discovered "a quantum phenomenon in which a particle is effected by electromagnetic fields even when traveling through a region of space in which both electric and magnetic field are zero" (Kregar, Aharonov-Bohm, 1). More specifically, their work demonstrated that "an electrically charged particle is affected by an electromagnetic field, despite being confined to a region in which both the magnetic field and electric field are zero. The underlying mechanism is the coupling of the electromagnetic potential with the complex phase of a charged particle's wavefunction" (Wikipedia). In the 1961 paper, Aharonov and Bohm extended their prediction to include the sources of potentials quantum-mechanically, and confirm the results obtained in their first paper. CONDITION & DETAILS: Two first editions, both in original wraps. Lancaster: American Physical Society. Slight wear and light creasing at the edges of the wraps. Very good condition.

        Bobby Fischer's Games of Chess

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1959. First edition of the only book ever written entirely by Bobby Fischer. Octavo, original boards. Signed by Bobby Fischer on the front free endpaper. Light wear to the bottom boards, near fine in a very good dust jacket. This is the only book ever authored entirely by Bobby Fischer, and it was written when he was fifteen. It has historical significance as a prelude to the rest of the chess player's career. Within, Fischer analyses thirty-four games. He reflects on the experiences of thirteen games from the U.S. Championship Tournament of 1957-58 as well as the prize-winning "Game of the Century" from the Third Rosenwald Trophy Tournament. He also includes the scores of twenty games from the 1958 Portoroz Interzonal Tournament in which he played against Tal, Gligorich, Petrosyan, Bronstein, and more of the world's elite. The games in this book reveal Bobby Fischer's brilliance in middle and end-game strategy.

        The Naked Lunch

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1959 First edition, first issue with the original price of "Francs 1500" (later issues have a "18NF" price sticker). Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page: "For David / William Burroughs". Original publisher's green wrappers; original purple and white pictorial dust jacket designed by the author. Near fine, with some minor rubbing to the spine ends, former owner's inscription to the front flyleaf, bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and small nicks to the spine ends, light toning to the spine, fresh panels. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy, inscribed by Burroughs. The Naked Lunch was first published in Paris as part of The Olympia Press' The Traveller's Companion series, which included other literary classics like Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita (1955) and Henry Miller's Quiet Days in Clichy (1956), among others. The Olympia Press was well known for its liberal selection of literature; many English-speaking authors published their books with Olympia in Paris after being rejected by other publishing houses. Even so, Olympia's publisher Maurice Girdoias did not initially want to publish the racy The Naked Lunch, but changed his mind after selections from the novel appeared in literary magazines, including The Chicago Review. The chapters in The Naked Lunch are a series of vignettes, intended to be read independently of one another, that follow drug addict William Lee as he travels to a variety of locations; each story is loosely based on Burroughs' own experiences with drugs in these locations. As John Ciardi commented in his June 27, 1959 review for The Saturday Review, "what Burroughs is writing about is not only the destruction of depraved men by their drug lust, but the destruction of all men by their consuming addictions, whether the addiction be drugs or overrighteous propriety, lasciviousness or sixteen-year-old girls.". Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Soft Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
