Vetrogonsky, and works by V. Efimov, S. Spitsin, I. Yackerson, V. Pirker, D. Borovsky, D. Arsenin, M. Litovchenko, etc."In the summer of 1957 in Moscow took place the VIth World Youth and Students Festival. Young men and women from all over the globe have demonstrated their ardent will for unity, their aspiration to defend peace and hapiness [sic] for all peoples. / A group of young Leningrad artists -- participants of the Festival has carried out a number of studies, sketches and drawings that are included in the present album. / The album does not pretend to give the full representation of all the events of the Festival; it is rather a fragmentary and incomplete, but exciting and sincere record about new friends, new acquaintances, about the festive Moscow. The aim of the authors of this album was to report to the audience some vivid episodes, to communicate the joyful atmosphere of the fete". -- Quoted from the dust jacket's blurb. The 6th World Festival of Youth and Students opened in Moscow on July 28, 1957. Taking place following the political changes and reforms initiated by Nikita Krushchev, known as Krushchev's Thaw, it was the first World Festival of Youth and Students held in the Soviet Union and drew over 34,000 people from 130 countries. Music and arts from around the world came to the USSR and Russian artists and performers like Russian Jazz musician Aleksey Kozlov had a chance to play with foreign musicians. A year later Van Cliburn electrified Russian audiences and judges winning the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow.Discouraged from attending by the US Government, which suspected the festival would become an event of Soviet propaganda, those American artists and musicians who did show up became important missionaries of capitalism, appealing to Russian youth who flooded them with questions. Harry Colman, the only American visual artist to take part was a sensation with his "action painting". While he was unable to compete with the thousands of original abstract expressionists in the US, Colman became an overnight star in the Soviet capital. His displays of work were diametrically different than the social realism of Russian artists, and were considered one of the artistic weapons of the cold war with his every brush stroke interpreted as political gesture. Colman is depicted in the book in a sketch by Vladimir Vetrogonsky.

Lettre autographe signée à Pierre Jean Jouve.

Giens, 20. X. 1959. ORIGINAL HAPPENINGS EVENT FLYER ILLUSTRATED BY RED GROOMS FOR THE JANUARY 1960 "HAPPENINGS AT THE REUBEN GALLERY", featuring "Fireman's Dream" by Red Grooms, "The Big Laugh" by Allan Kaprow, and "Small Cannon" by Robert Whitman

New York: Reuben Gallery, (1959).. (1959).. Fair. - sc - An original 17 inch high by 12 inch wide black & white flyer designed and illustrated by Red Grooms for the series of Happenings which took place at Reuben Gallery from January 8 through the 11th, 1960 and the overlapping exhibition of Red Grooms' works displayed at the gallery from January 9 through the 28th of that year. One half of the flyer lists the 3 performance art events scheduled for the evenings of January 8th through the 11th, boldly titled in facsimile of the artist's handwriting within a heavy black frame. Illustrated with what appears to be an arm reaching out for a ball at the left of the frame. "Happenings at the Reuben Gallery: Art in a New Medium produced before a seated audience" is additionally printed in type within the frame, and the dates and relevant information is printed along the bottom: "4 evenings January 8.9.10, 11 at 8:30 p.m. Admission by Advance Reservation Only / Write: Reuben Gallery 61 Fourth Avenue N.Y.C. 3 N.Y. Phone OR-41136 min. contrib. $1.50". Depicted upside down on the other half of the sheet is a bold black & white illustration of one of Red Groom's paintings of a man in a wide brimmed hat reaching out with his hand, the whole heavily scribbled out with bold black lines in Grooms inimitable style with the words "Red Grooms Jan 9 - Jan 28" boldly written at left of the image. The sheet is folded twice horizontally and once vertically for mailing. It is addressed in ink to "Brata" on the verso with Reuben Gallery's return address and a 1959 postmarked US postage stamp. The flyer is soiled with creases to the edges, several pinholes to two of the corners, a short tear along the edge of one fold and some damage and rough short tears to the left edge not affecting the text. A bold powerful event flyer. The event flyer advertised performances of Red Grooms' "Fireman's Dream" (later titled "The Magic Train Ride"), Allan Kaprow's "The Big Laugh", and Robert Whitman's "Small Cannon" in addition to an exhibition of Red Grooms' art work.A rare event flyer for an early "happening", a term coined by Allan Kaprow to describe these early performance art events. The art exhibit held in conjunction with the performances was Red Grooms first solo show. The flyer is addressed to the Brata gallery, located at 89 E. 10th street, which was itself significant as one of the 10th Street galleries that operated co-operatively in Manhattan's East Village. These artist run galleries operated on low budgets were the avant-garde alternative to the conservative 57th Street galleries. In its short life (October 1959 to April 1961), the Reuben Gallery, founded by Anita Reuben as "an outpost for human image in a sea of Abstract Expressionism", helped launch the careers of many of the important artists of the period. George Brecht, Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal were among the many modern artists whose works were exhibited by the Reuben. In a 2012 article published by The New York Times about the Pace Gallery's exhibition entitled "Happenings: New York, 1958-1963" Red Grooms states that "All of us were painters or makers of something. I guess we all had a knack for doing something theatrical, and there was a certain sort of movement in painting at that time. Pollock was a prime influence...." and further describes his work "I was enamored with all sorts of theater-- circuses, carnivals, ice shows, things on television. In high school assemblies I would do skits; I'd come out in a tutu and do a pratfall. So my Happenings were physical as well. In all of them I played this character called the Pasty Man, who would come out from behind the curtain with this candle...."RARE. [No copies found in WorldCat].

        The Haunting of Hill House

New York: The Viking Press, 1959 New York: The Viking Press, 1959. First Edition. Octavo, 246 pp. Yellow cloth-backed aqua cloth boards, black imprinting on the cover and spine. Pictorial dustjacket. A strikingly well-preserved copy; but for minor soiling at bottom of endpapers and a touch of wear at jacket spine top and bottom, this is a new book. Near fine/near fine. Considered by many to be the finest haunting novel ever written, basis of two film versions and certain the archetype for the twisted-house (even in its architecture)-gone-mad horror, The Haunting of Hill House may be the only novel of its type to be re-issued so many times in so many editions - 1960,1984, 1985, and 1991, and still in paperback reprinting. "Certainly there are spots which inevitably attach to themselves an atmosphere of holiness and goodness; it might not then be too fanciful to say that some houses are born bad." L17

        Saucers - Spring & Summer 1959. UFO / Max Miller's Retained Copy

Los Angeles: Flying Saucers International, 1959 Los Angeles: Flying Saucers International, 1959. First Edition of the Sping & Summer, 1959 issue, Vol. VII, Nos. 1 & 2. This is the copy from the UFOlogy collection of Max Miller, founder of Flying Saucers International and editor of this, the organization's publication. Printed stapled wraps, octavo, 24 pp.; slightly aged-toned; Fine. An extraordinarily scarce piece of UFOlogy history, with unusual association status, being Max Miller's own copy of his publication. His 'Saucers' publication was an early intelligent treatment of a topic which was treated in a dizzying variety of ways in those early years. This issue features the annual gathering at Giant Rock, a Japanese photo of a Transient Lunar Phenomenon looking rather UFOish, a number of sightings reports and quite a lot more, including a Morris K. Jessup piece entitled "UFOlogy: A Plea and A Warning". L103
