The TURBINE DRIVE BUICK... BUICK'S ALL-TIME BEST. Dealer's Backlit Showroom Display Case Complete with 33 Transparencies Displaying Interior & Exterior Design Choices and Three Upholstery Sample Catalogues.

Flint, MI / Greenwich, CT: General Motors Corp., Buick Motor Company / William Melish Harris Association Merchandising Displays, (1959). 33 clear plastic transparencies, three upholstery sample catalogues: 3 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 19 samples; 4 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 22 samples; 3 leaves (graduated thumb tabs) w/ 20 samples. Includes: wooden lighted display cabinet (electrical cord to rear and switch located inside top right side of cabinet), three upholstery interior sample catalogues in three and two ring binders inside drawer (titled: Invicta & Invicta Custom Interiors; Invicta & Invicta Convertible Interiors; Electra 225 Interiors), 33 transparencies (14 displaying "Solid Color" exterior, 14 displaying "Two-Tone" exterior, 4 of interiors of the: LeSabre, Invicta, Electra/ Electra 25 & the Chassis, 1 introductory transparency) to be switched to the front (inserted down underneath front glass) in order to illustrate the different exterior & interior colors available. These high-tech lighted displays were developed by the General Motors sales office as an update of their showroom sales flip board displays used (mostly) in the 1950s. Harris Associates was a division of Plasikorp at the time, and were known for their modern and sleek merchandising displays (even patenting one for carpet stores) which used plastic, and plastic transparencies, along with sample books. Potential Buick customers could come into the dealership, and try out various color combinations for trim, car & upholstery, by overlaying the transparencies and seeing, lit up, exactly how their car would appear. Buick designers were trying to boost sagging sales for their division, so they revised the 1960 models from the 1959 which had been the most outlandish fin-heavy models yet produced. The Buick Invicta and Electra models (both featured in this display) lowered the hoods, placed the headlights side-by-side, installed a front grill with concave vertical slats with the tri-shield Buick logo floating in the center. The tailfin tips were rounded off, and they even revived the famous front fender porthole ornaments from the 1940s and 50s. Buick entirely redisgned the dash with a longer speedometer, lights for coolant temperature, generator and oil, and even installed a new a Mirromagic instrument panel mounted facing up, but reflected on a mirror that could be adjusted. One of the most significant changes was a strictly horizontal chrome strip running from rear bumper to the front wheel opening allowing Buick purchasers to make much easier decisions on two-tone paint treatments -- all of which are displayed here in the lighted case. The color combinations illustrate Turquoise, Chalet Blue, Midnight Blue, Lucerne Green, Silver Mist, Gull Grey, Cordovan, Verde Green, Tampico & Titian Red, and others. In addition there are a number of samples showing the possible convertible top materials. As dealers typically disposed of the previous years' showroom material, dealer showroom materials are quite scarce, and we can find no records of any similar surviving cabinet. Moderate wear to case (rubbing and minor scuffing to edges, light soiling). Transparencies lightly scuffed and scratched (clearly worn). Sample booklet leaves worn and warping. Overall, a VG example.

Problemy Urbanistycznej Architektonicznej Realizacji Miasta Nowa Huta (Implementation of Urban Planning and Architecture in the City of Nowa Huta) [WITH] Nowa Huta

NP; "Miastoprojekt", Krakow 1959 - Collection of two architectural work on the new Polish city of Nowa Huta, a masterpiece of Soviet social planning, and the brainchild of architect Tadeusz Ptaszycki. Nowa Huta is one of only two entirely pre-planned socialist realist cities ever built (the other being Magnitogorsk in Russia's Ural Mountains). The building of the new city started in 1949 as a separate town near Kraków on a terrain taken by the Communist government from the former villages of Mogila, Pleszów and Krzeslawice. It was planned as a huge centre of heavy industry. The town was to become a showcase for Communist propaganda. Indeed, built to impress, Nowa Huta featured wide, tree-lined avenues, parks, lakes and the officially sanctioned architectural style of the time - Socialist Realism. Careful planning was key, and the suburb was designed with 'efficient mutual control' in mind: wide streets would prevent the spread of fire and the profusion of trees would easily soak up a nuclear blast, while the layout was such that the city could easily be turned into a fortress if it came under attack. In 1951 Nowa Huta was joined with Kraków as its new district and in the following year tramway communication was started. In 1954, the Vladimir Lenin Steelworks was opened and in less than 20 years the factory became the biggest steel mill in Poland. - Problemy Urbanistycznej Architektonicznej Realizacji Miasta Nowa Huta (Implementation of Urban Planning and Architecture in the City of Nowa Huta) [1953]. Large quarto. 53 leaves (Text); 10pp (original photographs). Full olive cloth, with silver gelatin print pasted on front cover. This rare typed survey on the urban planning and socialist architecture in the new Polish city of Nowa Huta contains 20 original silver gelatin prints showing various views of the city at the time of the completion of the survey (1953). Nineteen of the silver gelatin prints are pasted on the last ten pages, and one is pasted on front cover. Each photograph measures appr. 3 3/8 x 5". The survey is dated October 10, 1953 at the end of the typed text. Soiling along fore-edge of front cover. Pages age-toned throughout. Text in Polish. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in good, photographs in very good condition. - Nowa Huta (1959). Oblong quarto. [4]pp (Text), 43pp (Photographic plates), 1pp (Captions). Original light green cloth, with olive lettering on front cover. Collection of 43 striking photogravures showing various views of Nowa Huta, the new Northeastern distric of Kraków. Includes views of the Central Square (Plac Centralny), large blocks of appartment buildings, the Hutnik Stadium, a monument to commemorate the 440 political prisoners executed there by the Germans during World War II, etc. The last three photographs depict the very impressive Vladimir Lenin Steelworks. As Poland rebuilt itself from near complete destruction after WWII, steel was of vital importance. Work began in April 1950, and by 1954 the first blast furnace was in operation. Employing some 40,000 people in its heyday the Steelworks were capable of producing seven million tonnes of steel annually. Binding alightly age-toned on spine and along edges. Text and captions in Polish. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Milano, Italia

Milano , LERICI, Forma-Vita 3 1959 - 135 fotografie in bianco e nero di Mario Carrieri. 4to. pp. 164. . Ottimo (Fine). Sovracoperta restaurata professionalmente per una piccola mancanza al pannello frontale (Dust jacket professionally restored for a little lack to the front panel. Otherwise very good). Prima edizione (First edition). [Parr, Badger, 2004]. A Separate Peace [True First Edition]

London: Secker & Warburg , 1959. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good + or better copy of the first UK edition, first printing (front free endpaper corner clipped and subsequent page partially toned in consequence, otherwise Fine with the common spotting to the closed page block's top edge, a bit of pushing to the spine ends, a thin line of fading to the spine head, a prior owner's signature to the front free endpaper, and a small Foyles bookshop sticker to the front pastedown's lower left corner) in a Very Good price-clipped dust jacket (piece of brown tape applied to the upper verso, otherwise Very Good + with light edge wear, tiny corner chips and a tear to the front panel's upper edge, some toning to the spine, and a few scattered spots of foxing to the verso); John Knowles's debut novel, a tale of two boys at a New England Prep School, their friendship, and its ending. While not strictly autobiographical, elements of the tale were born of Knowles's own experiences as a student at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. (Notably, the character Brinker is based on novelist Gore Vidal who whose attendance at Exeter overlapped that of Knowles.) The book won the 1961 William Faulkner Foundation Award for notable first novel and provided the basis for the 1972 Larry Peerce film of the same name -- adapted for the screen by John Knowles and Fred Segal (George Segal's brother) -- starring John Heyl, Parker Stevenson, and William Roerick. Published in the year prior to publication of the US first, this UK first edition is the true first edition. The UK dust jacket is quite striking and much nicer than is the duller US dust jacket. This true first edition of the novel is surprisingly uncommon to the market and copies in the dust jacket are scarce. A Very Good to Very Good + copy of the SCARCE TRUE FIRST EDITION OF THIS QUITE NOTABLE NOVEL.

        Autograph letter signed.

Paris, 20. I. 1959. [ ]". - On headed paper "Telegram"; small damage to edges, and slightly dust-soiled.
