        ALAS, BABYLON ...

Philadelphia and New York: J. B. Lippincott Company,. [1959]. cloth.. Private owner's bookplate affixed to front free endpaper. A fine copy. in very good dust jacket with wear at spine ends and corner tips and. rubbing along folds. An elusive book rarely found in a decent jacket.. (#136292). First edition. The inhabitants of Fort Repose, an isolated, small town in central Florida, cooperate to maintain order and stability during a catastrophic nuclear war. This best-selling novel is an "American pastorale, a hymn to self-sufficiency and the virtues of small-town life ... {The] book has something of the appeal of George Stewart's EARTH ABIDES, although it lacks that work's sweep and grandeur. Fundamentally a cosy fantasy, ALAS, BABYLON belongs very much to its period. It would be impossible to write such a hopeful novel about nuclear war today." - Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 29. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-421. Brians, Nuclear Holocausts: Atomic War in Fiction, 1895-1984, pp. 273-4. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 115. Survey of Science Fiction Literature I, pp. 38- 42.

        Eloise In Moscow.

Additionally signed by illustrator, Hilary Knight. Bottom cloth rubbed in a very good dust jacket. After a three-week stay in Moscow with her colleague Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson had plenty of fodder for her distinctly Eloisian travelogue: the food ("It is difficult to know what to eat in Moscow/ There is no melon in season/ Nichevo"); the stilted English of their tour guide ("That house is Chekhov/ That house is Stanislavsky if you want to see it/ No you cannot it is reconstruction"); national security ("Our telephone had quite a bit of static/ so we talked about General de Gaulle/ to throw them off track/ Everybody listens to everything in Moscow" [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Pervoje fortografii obratnoj storonoe Lunoe [Russian - i.e. first photographs of the backside of the Moon].

Moscow, 1959. 4to. In publisher's embossed full blue buckram with gilt lettering to front board. Light soiling to extremities and sunning to spine. Fine and clean. 33, (3) pp. + 4 plates (photos depicting the Moon).. First edition of the first publication to include mankind's first views of the far hemisphere of the Moon. The photos of the far side of the moon, never seen before from the Earth as it is always facing away, caused global excitement and interest when the present publication was released just a few months after the photographs had been taken by Soviet satellite Luna 3. A year later, in 1960, an English translation of the present work was published and the first globe (1:13 600 000 scale) containing lunar features invisible from the Earth was released in the USSR based on the present images. The Soviet launched the Luna 3 satellite (also referred to as Lunik 3 or E-2A No.1) on 4 October. Luna 3 was third attempt made by the Soviet to photograph the Moon's surface: Luna 1, missed the Moon and carried on into space and Luna 2 suffered the unfortunate fate of being the first craft to crash onto the Moon's surface. The time was chosen so that Lunik 3 would be between the Sun and the Moon, meaning about 70% of the far side would be lit by the Sun. A total of 29 pictures were taken. Attempts to transmit the pictures to the Soviet Union began on October 8 but the early attempts were unsuccessful due to the poor signal strength. As Luna 3 came closer to the Earth, 17 viewable but poor quality photographs were transmitted by the 18th of October. All contact with the probe was lost on 22 October 1959. Due to the invisibility from Earth the far side of the Moon had for many year been subject of UFO sightings and various more or less creative conspiracies. Some conspiracy theorists, have alleged that some Apollo astronauts had seen UFOs on the far side of the Moon but were told to keep quiet about them. Some have allegedly reported seeing an alien base and even encountered aliens who told them to stay off the Moon. Some photographs circulated on the Internet purport to show a large "castle" on the far side of the Moon. These theories were not entirely put to rest but Luna 3 not only marked the beginning the famous lunar explorations in the 60ies which eventually culminated with the landing of the first humans on the moon in 1969, its success proved to be a major propaganda coup by the Soviet Union in the space-race with the US

        The Same Door

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1959. First. First edition. Fine in very good or better first issue dustwrapper with rubbing and small nicks at the crown. Inscribed by Updike: "for Herb Yellin who is slowly driving me crazy. John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. Updike's scarce third book, and first book of short stories. A very nice copy. .

GROUP OF 3 TLS's, DATED 1957-1958, FROM HEFNER TO ARTIST JACK DAVIS CONCERNING DAVIS' JAZZ CARTOON "TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER."

Chicago: Playboy Magazine, 1959. First edition. 5 single sheets. The letters show some age-toning, but are in overall very good condition.. These 5 pages from Hefner, in three letters, dated August 19, 1957--January 31, 1958, and February 26, 1958, reveal a fascinating and illuminating glimpse into the editorial mind of Hugh Hefner directing the efforts of the iconic artist Jack Davis. "Dear Jack, I'd like to do up a finish up for me on the "Take Me To Your Leader" gag. I would like to see another rough on this, however as I see a somewhat different approach taken on it. You can send either a rough or else pencil it on the board and send that before going into a final finish in color." "The old expression, "Take Me To Your Leader," now brings to mind to thousands of "in" people the Martian addressing the cow (or was it a horse?) in The New Yorker Cartoon." "...I would like to see here a very, very far-out jazz musician with thick horn-rimmed glasses and goatee and beret and rather dwarfish stature and long hair, approaching a member of a fairly hip-looking jazz band...", "this gag, as drawn, would have worked out pretty nicely in 1945, when a contrast existed between bop, and Dixieland. But bop is no more. Far better then that we get a contrast between the bop of 10 years ago and the far-out garb that those gents wore, contrasted against the very Ivy and Brooks Brothers cool schoolers of today," And finally, "...our bop musician is just a little too short and monkey-like. If he's extremely weird in stature, it rather destroys the gag, it seems to me. We want to make the most out of the unusual appearance that he maintains through glasses, beard and clothing. If we make him no bigger than a chimpanzee, we fight the gag...let's get him up a bit higher...I want to see him full profile at least, since he's the important bit on this gag." Hef even explains his view of what each musician should look like, down to what they are wearing, even the type of glasses, and how the musical instruments should look, down to the little new hip guy wearing "soft leather shoes". Each of the 3 letters have been signed by Hefner, one a full signature, the other two signed "Hef". Playboy's Head of Readers' Services, Janet Pilgrim, essentially Hef's personal assistant, typed the letters for her boss. And, as any self-respecting Playboy collector knows, Miss Pilgrim was a three-time Playmate and one of the most popular in the magazine's long history. The five pages (three letters) are on Playboy stationery. Along with a copy of the Playboy issue the cartoon ran in on page 59 (the 1959 Jazz All Stars Issue).

        Goldfinger.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "From Ian with love for Jo. May 6, 1959." The recipient is Josephine Hartford Bryce, husband Ivar Bryce, often cited as one of the primary models for James Bond. Fleming named the character Felix Leiter, Bond's friend and CIA operative, in part after Ivar Bryce, whose middle name was Felix. The Bryce's spent their summers at Black Hole Hollow Farm in Vermont, where Fleming was frequently a guest. He spent summers there hiking and plotting his Bond novels. Fleming first conceived the plot for Diamonds are Forever at the farm, and the primary setting of For Your Eyes Only, Echo Park in Vermont, is based on the farm. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A significant association copy. "In the first two months of 1958, Fleming wrote the first draft of Goldfinger under the working title The Richest Man in the World.         Psycho (Association copy)

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1959. First edition. about Fine/Very Good. A fantastic inscription from Bloch "For Alvin Germeshausen - This fragment of autobiography with much affection - Robert Bloch." Sir Alvin Germeshausen inducted Bloch into the Praed Street Irregulars, a society celebrating August Derleth's "Solar Pons" series. Germeshausen was a well known figure around the Hollywood art and literature scene. Book just about Fine due to browning of the pages (as usual). In a dust jacket with small chips and tears at the extremities and an old tape repair on the verso. The small defects to the jacket far outweighed in our estimation by the fantastic association and inscription from the author. "Psycho" was inspired by the actual serial killer Ed Gein, who ended up being arrested in Wisconsin, near where Bloch was living. The book is famous for Bloch's focus on the inner psychology of the character to create horror as opposed to relying on supernatural tropes. According to Harlan Ellison, Bloch "was surely on a level with Poe" and "set the tone for the modern dark fantasy." "Psycho" was adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960 after the book was brought to his attention through his assistant. "Psycho" is considered one of the greatest of his films - and by extension one of the greatest films of all time. Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Hitchcock would all receive Academy Award nominations and "Psycho" would go on to influence countless others both in and out of the horror genre. The film was declared aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress and marked for preservation in 1992. "Now, in his sixth suspense novel, Psycho, he is more chillingly effective than any writer might reasonably be expected to be..." (Contemporary New York Times review). about Fine in Very Good. dust jacket.

Turnabout," Faulkner's first story-to-screen adaptation. Document Signed, 2 4to pp, New York, March 23, 1959

      - This agreement transferred distribution rights of the film based on Faulkner's story, "Turnabout" to the Loew's Corporation. "By an assignment dated September 26, 1932, I conveyed to William B. Hawks all rights of every kind. in my story. TURNABOUT, published in the March 5, 1932 issue of the Saturday Evening Post and registered for copyright. On November 4, 1932, William B. Hawks conveyed all. rights. to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. your predecessor. In my assignment. it was provided [that I]. secure. renewals of all copyrights. The copyright of March 1, 1932. was renewed in my name on March 4, 1959.Accordingly, I now assign and confirm to you. the same rights in the work entitled TURNABOUT." Signed in full on the signature line, "William Faulkner." The film referenced in our document is titled, "Today We Live," released in 1933 by MGM. According to the Turner Classics Movies web site, this film is listed as being distributed by Loew's which was the parent company of MGM from 1924-1959. The story is about an American World War I aviator who befriends a British torpedo boat pilot and comes to see the war from a different perspective. The film, considered a romance drama, was produced and directed by Howard Hawks and starred Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Robert Young and Franchot Tone. Faulkner provided dialogue for the film. Hawks purchased the option on the story, but Irving Thalberg, then Vice President of MGM, forced Hawks to hire Crawford for the film and forced Faulkner to write a love interest for the men. Crawford was under contract for MGM at the time. All of this weakened Faulkner's original story and thus the film's plot. In addition, the film apparently included inappropriate use of non-period costumes and an unconvincing Crawford. "Today We Live" turned into a failure. According to a movie review in the "New York Times" on April 15, 1933 by Mordaunt Hall, this "first of William Faulkner's literary efforts to reach the screen. is understood to have been amplified in the studio by the author. is at times vague and cumbersome. It possesses, however, the spark of sincerity. " Margin tears and stains show on right margins of both pages. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
