        Pull My Daisy.

Grove Press, New York 1959 - First edition. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. In near fine condition. Signed by Robert Frank. Pull My Daisy is a 1959 short film that typifies the Beat Generation. Directed by Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, Daisy was adapted by Jack Kerouac from the third act of a stage play he never finished entitled Beat Generation. Kerouac also provided improvised narration. It starred Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Larry Rivers, Peter Orlovsky, David Amram, Richard Bellamy, Alice Neel, Sally Gross and Pablo, Frank's then-infant son. Based on an incident in the life of Neal Cassady and his wife Carolyn, Daisy tells the story of a railway brakeman whose painter wife invites a respectable bishop over for dinner. However, the brakeman's bohemian friends crash the party, with comic results. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "From Ian with love for Jo. May 6, 1959." The recipient is Josephine Hartford Bryce, husband Ivar Bryce, often cited as one of the primary models for James Bond. Fleming named the character Felix Leiter, Bond's friend and CIA operative, in part after Ivar Bryce, whose middle name was Felix. The Bryce's spent their summers at Black Hole Hollow Farm in Vermont, where Fleming was frequently a guest. He spent summers there hiking and plotting his Bond novels. Fleming first conceived the plot for Diamonds are Forever at the farm, and the primary setting of For Your Eyes Only, Echo Park in Vermont, is based on the farm. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A significant association copy. "In the first two months of 1958, Fleming wrote the first draft of Goldfinger under the working title The Richest Man in the World. This was destined to become a quintessential example of both the novels and the movies" (Biondi, 35). Made into the 1965 film starring Sean Connery as Bond and Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore.

        Psycho (Association copy)

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1959. First edition. about Fine/Very Good. A fantastic inscription from Bloch "For Alvin Germeshausen - This fragment of autobiography with much affection - Robert Bloch." Sir Alvin Germeshausen inducted Bloch into the Praed Street Irregulars, a society celebrating August Derleth's "Solar Pons" series. Germeshausen was a well known figure around the Hollywood art and literature scene. Book just about Fine due to browning of the pages (as usual). In a dust jacket with small chips and tears at the extremities and an old tape repair on the verso. The small defects to the jacket far outweighed in our estimation by the fantastic association and inscription from the author. "Psycho" was inspired by the actual serial killer Ed Gein, who ended up being arrested in Wisconsin, near where Bloch was living. The book is famous for Bloch's focus on the inner psychology of the character to create horror as opposed to relying on supernatural tropes. According to Harlan Ellison, Bloch "was surely on a level with Poe" and "set the tone for the modern dark fantasy." "Psycho" was adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960 after the book was brought to his attention through his assistant. "Psycho" is considered one of the greatest of his films - and by extension one of the greatest films of all time. Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Hitchcock would all receive Academy Award nominations and "Psycho" would go on to influence countless others both in and out of the horror genre. The film was declared aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress and marked for preservation in 1992. "Now, in his sixth suspense novel, Psycho, he is more chillingly effective than any writer might reasonably be expected to be..." (Contemporary New York Times review). about Fine in Very Good. dust jacket.

Presentation Photo Album to American Ambassador H. Freeman Matthews from the American International School in Vienna

Vienna: American International School. [1959?]. Oblong quarto. Brown morocco with the gilt name of the American Ambassador to Austria, H. Freeman Matthews. Some rubbing and spotting on the boards, else near fine; internally fine. 27 large silver gelatin images tipped in, with printed captions facing each image. First leaf is a printed presentation leaf signed by the President, Superintendent, and President of the Student Body stating that Matthews: "... through foresight, wisdom and courage made this school possible." The images are mixed between candid shots in the classroom and pictures of Matthews breaking ground and the ceremonies surrounding that event. The school was founded to accommodate the children of American and Canadian diplomats in Vienna, and exists to this day. Matthews had previously served as Ambassador to the Netherlands, and served as Acting Secretary of State for a grand total of one day under Eisenhower upon the departure of Dean Acheson. Excellent quality photographs and an interesting insight into Americans in Europe during the Cold War. .

Turnabout," Faulkner's first story-to-screen adaptation. Document Signed, 2 4to pp, New York, March 23, 1959

      - This agreement transferred distribution rights of the film based on Faulkner's story, "Turnabout" to the Loew's Corporation. "By an assignment dated September 26, 1932, I conveyed to William B. Hawks all rights of every kind. in my story. TURNABOUT, published in the March 5, 1932 issue of the Saturday Evening Post and registered for copyright. On November 4, 1932, William B. Hawks conveyed all. rights. to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. your predecessor. In my assignment. it was provided [that I]. secure. renewals of all copyrights. The copyright of March 1, 1932. was renewed in my name on March 4, 1959.Accordingly, I now assign and confirm to you. the same rights in the work entitled TURNABOUT." Signed in full on the signature line, "William Faulkner." The film referenced in our document is titled, "Today We Live," released in 1933 by MGM. According to the Turner Classics Movies web site, this film is listed as being distributed by Loew's which was the parent company of MGM from 1924-1959. The story is about an American World War I aviator who befriends a British torpedo boat pilot and comes to see the war from a different perspective. The film, considered a romance drama, was produced and directed by Howard Hawks and starred Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Robert Young and Franchot Tone. Faulkner provided dialogue for the film. Hawks purchased the option on the story, but Irving Thalberg, then Vice President of MGM, forced Hawks to hire Crawford for the film and forced Faulkner to write a love interest for the men. Crawford was under contract for MGM at the time. All of this weakened Faulkner's original story and thus the film's plot. In addition, the film apparently included inappropriate use of non-period costumes and an unconvincing Crawford. "Today We Live" turned into a failure. According to a movie review in the "New York Times" on April 15, 1933 by Mordaunt Hall, this "first of William Faulkner's literary efforts to reach the screen. is understood to have been amplified in the studio by the author. is at times vague and cumbersome. It possesses, however, the spark of sincerity. " Margin tears and stains show on right margins of both pages. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Same Door

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1959. First. First edition. Fine in very good or better first issue dustwrapper with rubbing and small nicks at the crown. Inscribed by Updike: "for Herb Yellin who is slowly driving me crazy. John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. Updike's scarce third book, and first book of short stories. A very nice copy. .

        Arabian Sands

London: Longmans, 1959. First edition of this work that ranks as one of the greatest travel books of the 20th century. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Wilfred Thesiger on the title page, with a contemporary signature. Near fine in the original dust jacket which shows some wear to the spine. Map unopened in the inside pocket of the rear pastedown. Though educated at Eton and Oxford, Wilfred Thesiger was repulsed by the softness and rigidity of Western life-"the machines, the calling cards, the meticulously aligned streets." In the spirit of T. E. Lawrence, he set out to explore the deserts of Arabia, traveling among peoples who had never seen a European and considered it their duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-classic account is invaluable to understanding the modern Middle East. "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia" (The Daily Telegraph, London).

The Macmillan Company, New York 1959 - A Very Good copy of the book with the spine well cocked, rubbing and fraying to the lower edge of the rear board and staining to the closed text-block on the upper fore-edge. In a Very Good dust jacket that has minor wear at the spine ends and a bit of soiling. But, here's the interesting part, this copy retains both prices on the front flap $2.95 (upper) and $3.00 (lower) and is stamped "Sep 23 1959" on the flap. In addition, "Copy #1" is written on the front end paper in ink. Our suspicion is that this was one of the publisher's file copies. The vast majority of these dust jackets are publisher clipped, usually on the upper flap, retaining the $3.00 price. The unclipped jacket offered here would be the true first state jacket. So few of these jackets remain that is seems likely that only the publisher file copies and a handful of other advanced copies given out before the publication date would have retained both prices. The seventh book in Ian Fleming's internationally acclaimed James Bond series, "Goldfinger" was received more positively than its predecessor, "Dr. No," and was heralded as "a superlative thriller from our foremost literary magician" (New York Herald Tribune). While following Auric Goldfinger, a wealthy investor in the gold trade with ties to the Soviet counterintelligence agency, Bond is pulled into a malicious plot to infiltrate and steal the gold of Fort Knox. His efforts to thwart Goldfinger are assisted by Tilly Masterton, who seeks retribution for her murdered sister, and together they fight Goldfinger and his Korean factotum, Oddjob. In this novel, the Bond character was more fully developed and shown, with symbolic undertones, to represent Saint George, a prominent crusading saint in Catholicism. Fleming used American gold tycoon, Charles W. Engelhard Jr., as the inspiration for his Goldfinger character, one of his best villains. Very Good in Very Good. dust jacket.       Grove Press (1959)., New York: - First edition in FIRST-ISSUE, black-and-white dust jacket (vs. color), which is slightly taller than the book as usual. In presumed VARIANT BINDING with spine lettering stamped in silver versus the normally seen gold. "242 choruses" of Kerouac's experimental poetry -- "I want to be considered a jazz poet blowing a long blues in an afternoon jam session on Sunday" (Kerouac, from the jacket flap). Spine ends and corners slightly rubbed, touch of rubbing to "M" in title on spine, faintest of glass rings to front cover, otherwise near fine. The dust jacket is bright and, with the exception of tiny nicks to the flap corners, is free of chips and tears, but there is a faint stain to top corner of front panel and it appears a tapped-on label was removed from the bottom of the spine (library label?), leaving tanned areas around the edges of where it had been (it would have measured approximately 1.5 x 1.5"). Otherwise the jacket is near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[.] Ça me fit une étrange sensation. Je ne pouvais pas bouger et j'étouffais sous le liquide chaud et gluant. Alors, j'avalais tout."         The Americans

Philadelphia: Lippincott, (1959). First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. 8vo. Original quarter orange cloth over black cloth boards. Very good in like jacket. Mild shelf-wear and sunning to extremities. Slight lean. In very good DJ designed by Andy Warhol. Some toning and sunning to spine. Mild wear to edg- es. A faint spot or two of soil. SIGNED by Warhol in full to front panel of the jacket. Scarce example of Warhol's early com- mercial book design. A poignant novel set in Alabama and based heavily on Bell's own experiences. Though well re- viewed at the time of publication, THE BUTTERFLY TREE sold poorly. Nevertheless, The University of Alabama republished it in 1991 and the book is now recognized as a significant contribution to the lit- erature of the state. Similarly, Warhol's early graphic design is in- creasingly seen as an important and fertile period in his career, and examples of his dust-jacket work are becoming increasingly uncom- mon. And rare when signed by the artist, this being only the second we've encountered. [READING ANDY WARHOL p. 294].
