Collection of Original Drawings and Documents from "Journey to the Center of the Earth"

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A remarkable and important collection of 178 original drawings, designs, and color samples by the Academy Award-nominated art director Franz Bachelin from the 1959 Jules Verne adaptation Journey to the Center of the Earth, together with several original documents relating to the production of the film. The drawings include designs for almost every important location in the film, from set designs for the opening scenes in 1880's Edinburgh (with bagpipers on parade) to action scenes of the whirlpool at the Earth's core, the attack of a winged lizard, and the lost city of Atlantis. 145 drawings are in black ink and graphite on 8.5 x 11" sheets, hole-punched, each labeled with a scene number, and many with other indications; 5 are in colored pencil, 9 x 8." A further 4 larger plans on tracing paper, approx. 22-26 x 9", show Bachelin's meticulous planning of the final sequence of adventure scenes, and the geographical location of the lost city of Atlantis! <br style="">Also with the drawings are 10 small cards, 3 x 5 to 6 x 7", bearing vibrant sample color and texture schemes in marbleized patterns; 13 mimeographed 10 x 5" copies of drawings of the "prehistoric animal fight" showing dinosaurs battling it out in the water; and a lovely small painting of a tree and a sunset on card, 5.5 x 4.5". <br style="">Together with the drawings are several documents from the production of the film, including: a set construction estimate [4 pp.; May 12, 1959]; a large production cross plot showing the complete filming schedule over 52 days [1 p.; June 9, 1959]; a complete list of the crew members (including a duck trainer!) with phone numbers [1 p.; June 15, 1959]; a chart showing the total, labor, and materials costs for each of the elaborate set and location shoots - over $449,000 [2 pp.; December 3, 1959]; a typed copy of the film's credit [1 p.; n.d.]; and a telegram inviting Bachelin to a pre-Academy Awards cocktail party for nominees [1 p.; n.d.].<br style="">The drawings are in fine to very fine condition overall, with only slight toning, a few with slight tears or corner creases; one of the larger tracing paper drawings is in delicate condition with some creasing and tearing due to the paper. The documents are in good to fine condition, some with toning, creases and tears.<br>Overall a superb collection of drawings and materials from this iconic adventure film.<br style="">Journey to the Center of the Earth, a loose adaptation by Charles Brackett from the novel by Jules Verne, was directed by Henry Levin and starred James Mason, Pat Boone and Arlene Dahl. Released in 1959, it was a box office success, pleasing audiences with its fantastical plot, sets, and special effects (a particular feature were iguanas with glued-on fins, playing the part of dimetrodons!) The film was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Lyle R. Wheeler, Franz Bachelin, Herman A. Blumenthal, Walter M. Scott, Joseph Kish), Best Effects, Special Effects and Best Sound (Carlton W. Faulkner).

Government of the Dalai Lama, n.p. 1959 - (1), 63 ff. pages; Contents are clean and unmarked in original printed flexible board wrappers (binder style), with the title and date printed in red letters. Table of contents and 63 pages of text (printed on rectos only - mimeograph reproduction from a text produced on a typewriter). This publication, prepared in 1959 by the Government of the Dalai Lama details the historical relationship between Tibet and China from the 7th century to the situation in the 1950s and presents the arguments supporting their claim for Tibetan sovereignty. In 1959 the Dalai Lama sought support from the U.S. and other nations to recognize their government in exile and to bring their case for Tibetan sovereignty and against Chinese aggression before the United Nations. This publication is now rare. See OCLC: 230259625 [OCLC/WorldCat cites only two locations: Univ. of St. Andrews; and National Library of Australia]. It is necessary to distinguish between two 1959 publications under the same title. The more common (today) appears to be an octavo volume of 49 pages, which several sources attribute to the Central Electric Press in Delhi, India. [The British Library and Harvard University each has a copy in that smaller format; WorldCat details 10 locations of the 49 p. 8vo edition, under two OCLC numbers]. Our publication, a mimeographic duplication from a document produced on a typewriter, printed on rectos only of quarto sized sheets, has 63 leaves and an un-numbered first leaf ["Table of Contents"]. Technical limitations mean that our publication in quarto mimeographed format, is both more fragile by nature and less likely to have been issued in a large number of copies. Considering that the 14th Dalai Lama spent all but the first 90 days of 1959 residing in exile in Dharamshala, in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, it is likely that our publication was produced there. Historical Context: In 1959, within days of the rapidly devolving March uprising in Lhasa, the Dalai Lama and his retinue fled Tibet with the help of the CIA's Special Activities Division. They crossed the border into India on 30 March 1959, and soon afterward, the Dalai Lama set up the Government of Tibet in Exile in Dharamshala, receiving support from the CIA including a personal annual stipend of $180,000 and other material support from at least 1959 until about 1974. (CIA support for the Government of the Dalai Lama in Exile and other potential Tibetan assets reportedly totalled about $1.7 million per annum). In April 1959 the Dalai Lama sent a message to the U.S. Government requesting that the U.S. formally recognize the Free Tibetan Government and that he encourage other nations to do so. Under Secretary of State C. Douglas Dillon advised President Eisenhower that the U.S. should "avoid taking any position which might encourage the Dalai Lama to seek international recognition." Despite considerable U.S. covert support of the Tibetans' efforts to oust the Chinese, the official U.S. position held that Tibet was an autonomous country under Chinese suzerainty. The State Department believed this position better served America's broader foreign policy interest viz. China and India. In fact, the Eisenhower administration (both the State Department and the CIA) restrained the Tibetans from presenting their case against Chinese aggression, instead skirting the political issues and treading the softer line of human rights violations and cultural oppression. The Tibetans finally enlisted Ireland and Malaya to request "The Question of Tibet" to be added to the U.N. agenda for its 14th session. Consequently, the United Nations' Resolution 1353 (XIV) on Tibet was passed in October 1959. This first U.N. resolution on Tibet did not address the sovereignty issue, but voiced their "grave concern at the continued violation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of Tibetans" and calling for "respect of the fundamental human rights of the Tibetan people and for their distinctive cult [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[N.p., likely Los Angeles, 1959. [48],[2],48,10pp. largely rectos only. Contemporary glazed cloth boards, gilt. Minor wear at spine ends and corners, some rubbing. Very good. The original manuscript with numerous added items, presented by author James Warner Bellah to his friend, Charles Benton. James Warner Bellah was a veteran of both World War I and World War II, and a popular western author during the 1930s through the 1950s. He wrote numerous books and stories centering on cavalry and Indians, largely pulp fiction published in periodicals and paperbacks, and occasionally serialized in more respectable outlets such as the Saturday The present work is comprised of Bellah's handwritten manuscript (with numerous holographic corrections, emendations, and paste-overs), the typescript (with a few holographic corrections), and the published version of the short story (extracted from the magazine) bound together in that order. The recipient, Charles Benton presumably bound the manuscript, typescript, and magazine text together at a later date. The story is titled "Thirty Nine Days to Glory" and concerns the "real story of Custer's Last Fight" according to the subtitle added to the final printed version, which appeared in the September 1959 issue of HOLIDAY magazine. Bellah presented each item to Benton separately, each time including a presentation inscription; the inscription on the manuscript is dated Aug. 24, 1957, the others undated. Bellah included a signed note (also bound in) when he transmitted the manuscript to Benton that carries some importance for Bellah scholars, as he writes: "This is only one of two original manuscripts of mine that I have not burned as a matter of routine after they were typed. The other is that of 'The Valiant Virginians' which was requested by and is now on permanent exhibit at the Columbia University Library in New York. Who knows - you may ultimately have a fortune." An excellent literary item for the western collector, and the only obtainable Bellah manuscript in the world. EVENING POST. Several of Bellah's stories were adapted to film, including three by director John Ford: FORT APACHE, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, and RIO GRANDE. Bellah also co-wrote the screenplays for THE SEA CHASE and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and wrote for television throughout the 1950s and '60s.
