The Life of the Right Reverend Ronald Knox (author-signed)

Chapman & Hall, 1959. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine in near fine dustjacket, fading to the title lettering on the spine as is common, a small price cut, tiny nick at spine heel. The green flyer requesting subscriptions for the Ronald Knox Memorial Prize is laid in at page 12. The full title on the title page is 'The Life of the Right Reverend Ronald Knox Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford and Pronotary Apostolic to His Holiness Pope Pius X11 compiled from the original sources'; Evelyn Waugh has signed the title page in brown ink and corrected the misprint in the word Pronotary by adding an insertion mark with the letters TO beside it. Also included is a letter from Waugh, on his Combe Florey headed notepaper, in which he writes 'Dear Sir, If you would send Ronald Knox here with stamped & addressed label & wrapping for return, I will write my name in it & correct two egregious misprints./In payment please put whatever you think suitable into the box at your nearest Catholic church./ Yours faithfully/Evelyn Waugh'. The other egregious misprint to which he referred is on page 39 where, in the Latin phrase 'Hic est calixmeus', Waugh has crossed out 'meus', put an insertion mark between 'est' and calix' and put in the margin 'enim'. A unique copy therefore of this biography of Monsignor Knox, for whom Waugh was literary executor.

        The Americans

New York: Grove Press, Inc, 1959. First American edition. Introduction by Jack Kerouac. 83 black-and-white photographs printed in gravure. [iv], vi, [170] pp. Oblong 8vo. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black-and-white photo-illustrated dust-jacket, color collage by Alfred Leslie on back panel. Jacket lightly toned, rubbing to publisher's name at foot of spine, several nicks, short closed tear to front panel and spine folds. First American edition. Introduction by Jack Kerouac. 83 black-and-white photographs printed in gravure. [iv], vi, [170] pp. Oblong 8vo. "In The Americans Frank has given us a vision of the United States that is as true or untrue as we care to make it. What is certain is that it changed the face of photography in the documentary mode … it paved the way for three decades of photographs exploring the personal poetics of lived experience. Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank's masterpiece" (Parr/Badger).         ORIGINAL CORRECTED MANUSCRIPT AND CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT FOR THE WESTERN SHORT STORY, "THIRTY NINE DAYS TO GLORY"].

[N.p., likely Los Angeles. 1957-1959]. - [48],[2],48,10pp. largely rectos only. Contemporary glazed cloth boards, gilt. Minor wear at spine ends and corners, some rubbing. Very good. The original manuscript with numerous added items, presented by author James Warner Bellah to his friend, Charles Benton. James Warner Bellah was a veteran of both World War I and World War II, and a popular western author during the 1930s through the 1950s. He wrote numerous books and stories centering on cavalry and Indians, largely pulp fiction published in periodicals and paperbacks, and occasionally serialized in more respectable outlets such as the Saturday The present work is comprised of Bellah's handwritten manuscript (with numerous holographic corrections, emendations, and paste-overs), the typescript (with a few holographic corrections), and the published version of the short story (extracted from the magazine) bound together in that order. The recipient, Charles Benton presumably bound the manuscript, typescript, and magazine text together at a later date. The story is titled "Thirty Nine Days to Glory" and concerns the "real story of Custer's Last Fight" according to the subtitle added to the final printed version, which appeared in the September 1959 issue of HOLIDAY magazine. Bellah presented each item to Benton separately, each time including a presentation inscription; the inscription on the manuscript is dated Aug. 24, 1957, the others undated. Bellah included a signed note (also bound in) when he transmitted the manuscript to Benton that carries some importance for Bellah scholars, as he writes: "This is only one of two original manuscripts of mine that I have not burned as a matter of routine after they were typed. The other is that of 'The Valiant Virginians' which was requested by and is now on permanent exhibit at the Columbia University Library in New York. Who knows - you may ultimately have a fortune." An excellent literary item for the western collector, and the only obtainable Bellah manuscript in the world. EVENING POST. Several of Bellah's stories were adapted to film, including three by director John Ford: FORT APACHE, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, and RIO GRANDE. Bellah also co-wrote the screenplays for THE SEA CHASE and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and wrote for television throughout the 1950s and '60s.

Peter Doig. Alpiniste. Vorzugsausgabe in Leinenkassette. Ex Libris #11. Aufl. 40 Expl.

Die Kassette enthält: 1 Künstlerbuch »The Wonders of Ski-ing«, 22 x 28 cm, 288 Seiten, 1200 sw Abb., Text engl., Künstlereinband, signiert. 1 Ex Libris #11, signiert, nummeriert, Aufl. 300 Expl.

Mansart Builds a School

Mainstream Publishers, New York 1959 - First edition. A bookplate on the front pastedown, paper over the front hinge cracked, but the hinge is still tight, a very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by Du Bois to a fellow author: "For Van Wyck Brooks, W.E.B. Du Bois May 26, 1960." Although the long careers of both Harvard-educated authors overlapped for many decades, Brooks and Du Bois apparently did not know one another well until relatively late in their lives. In 1948 Brooks made a very formal appeal to Du Bois in the Committee of One Thousand's efforts to fight the existence of HUAC. But over the following decade they evidently got to know each other much better since Brooks spoke at the 1958 installation of the Zorach bust of Du Bois at the Schomburg Collection. Du Bois's Brooklyn address is penciled below the inscription. The second book in Du Bois's *Black Flame* trilogy. See this book in 3D on our site.         Pura Tessin. Aquarell.

1959 - Monogrammiert in Aquarell. Original Watercolour Artwork for the 1959 Paperback Edition of The Dark Frontier.

1959., 1959. The watercolour illustration measures 53cm x 34cm and is SIGNED by the artist, Oliver Brabbins, on the lower left. It is mounted and framed, the total size of the yellow metal effect frame is 75.5cm x 55cm. A striking design of the cover for the First Paperback Edition of this title. Based on the development of weaponry in the year 1936, The Dark Frontier was one of the first novels to predict the invention of a nuclear bomb and its consequences. Ambler evidently had no knowledge of what producing an atomic bomb may involve (even professional physicists at the time had only a vague idea).

Mad; Humor in a Jugular Vein. Vol. 1, No. 1 - Vol. 1, No 23; with: MAD: Humor in a Jugular Vein, Vol. 1, No, 24 - Vol. 1, No. 51

New York: EC / Educational Comics, 1959. Wraps. Most issues fine to very fine; a small number slightly less than fine, old tape-mends to the rear wrapper of one of the comic-books (no. 17), in all a splendid run, extremely well-preserved.. Uniform 8vos, 7-1/4 X 10-1/4 in. (numbers 1-23); uniform 4tos, 10-3/4 X 8 in. (numbers 24-51); original printed wrappers. A consecutive run of the first 51 numbers of the iconic periodical of irreverent satire that has entertained several generations of postwar youth. Founded by Harvey Kurtzmann and William L. Gaines, for its first 23 numbers, MAD was a comic book; in July 1955 it changed over to a magazine format. In the course of its long life -- which continues to this day -- there has been virtually no aspect of American culture that MAD has not satirized. It established a model for irreverent humor that led to offpspring such as National Lampoon, The Simpsons, and, it could be argued, a vast array of television, movies, and print-format humor. Among the roster of talent that helped to create MAD have been cartoonists Al Jaffee and Don Martin, Mort Drucker and comic giants such as Ernie Kovacs, Steve Allen, Bob Elliott & Ray Goulding ("Bob and Ray") and Stan Freberg.         A Malay-English Dictionary (Romanised) (2 Volumes)

London: Macmillan, 1959. Hardcover. Good. 6-9-15. More than 50 years after the publication of Wilkinson's magnum opus of a Malay-English dictionary in English and the Malay Jawi and Rumi scripts, this work confines itself to English and the Rumi (Romanised) script. The is an interesting short preface where the compiler explains "how he came 'to take up so dull a hobby' as writing dictionaries. The first volume covers the Malay letters A to K, while the second volume covers the remainder of the alphabet. As in the original volumes, Wilkinson, where known, gives the origins of the words defined. There is also a short bibliography. 1298 pages. Weight: 3kg. Post free within Malaysia, but, due to its weight, this book is likely to incur additional postal charges when posted outside Malaysia The two volumes appear to be in their original bindings, but the covers have scattered stains and some bubbling of the cloth. The bottom corners of both covers are worn. The binding is tight and the text clear with mild to medium tanning throughout.

        Observations

1959 - AVEDON, Richard. Observations. Photographs by Richard Avedon. Comments by Truman Capote. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1959). Folio, original white paper-covered boards, original acetate dust wrapper, original slipcase. $5200.First edition of Avedon’s stellar book of portraiture, a distinctive association copy warmly inscribed to film producer Arthur Hornblow, Jr. and his wife Leonora (Bubbles), “For Bubbles & Arthur with admiration, Dick,” featuring commentary by Truman Capote and over 100 photogravures.“Richard Avedon set the standard for portraiture and fashion photography in the second half of the 20th century… His photographs… virtually jump off the page with a signature brand of visual impact” (New York Times). “Observations is the culmination of a creative collaboration between Avedon and Alexey Brodovitch that began in 1945, when the imperial art director hired the 22-year-old photographer… as the youngest member of his team at Harper’s Bazaar” (Roth, 148). Avedon’s “later adoption of a seamless white studio background for most of his fashion and portrait photography was at least partly inspired by Mr. Brodovitch’s characteristic use of ‘white space,’ a means of making the subject seem suspended and weightless on the page” (Times). Not long after Capote and Avedon finished their work on Observations, they again collaborated in documenting the story of a brutal murder in Kansas, In Cold Blood (1965). This rare presentation/association copy warmly inscribed by Avedon to Arthur Hornblow, Jr., “one of Hollywood’s preeminent movie makers” (New York Times), and his wife Leonora Schinasi Hornblow (“Bubbles”). A lawyer and innovative Broadway producer, Hornblow earned four Oscar-nominations as a film producer, including Gaslight (1944) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Open Book, 174.Images clean and bright, light soiling, edge-wear to near-fine book; some chipping to edges of acetate, moderate rubbing to original slipcase. A near-fine association copy, scarce complete with original acetate wrapper and slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Anni Albers, »Runner«.

Bargaining Model for the Cooperative n-person Game

1959 - HARSANYI, John. “A Bargaining Model for the Cooperative n-person Game.” IN: TUCKER, A.W. and LUCE, R.D., editors. Contributions to the Theory of Games. Volume IV. (Annals of Mathematical Studies, Volume 40). Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1959. Large octavo, original orange printed paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2800.First edition of this important paper by the Nobel Prize-winning economist, in the journal in which it originally appearedâ€"his own copy of the journal, with his ownership signature on the front wrapper.John C. Harsanyi won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics along with John F. Nash Jr. and Reinhard Selten “for their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games.” “The arbitration schemes of Nash and Shapley were generalized by J.C. Harsanyi” (Hazewinkel, Encyclopedia of Mathematics, 237-38). “In 1956, Harsanyi showed that Nash’s bargaining solution could be derived from an earlier theory of bargaining by the Danish economist Frederik Zeuthen (1930). Then in 1959 [the present paper] and 1963 John Harsanyi published papers to show how the Nash bargaining solution and the Shapley value could be unified into one general solution concept that could be applied to any cooperative game with complete information” (Roger Myerson, “Learning Game Theory from John Harsanyi,” August 31, 2000). Other contributors to this volume include Aumann, Kalisch, von Neumann (“On the Theory of Games of Strategy,” 13-42), Shapley, Shubik, et al. Just a bit of mild rubbing and toning to paper wrappers. Interior fine. An excellent copy, with Nobel Prize-winning provenance. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
