Mercury Seven Signed Sheet of Project Mercury Stamps.

Single sheet of fifty four-cent stamps signed by all of the Mercury Seven, as follows: Malcolm Scott Carpenter; Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr.; John Herschel Glenn, Jr.; Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom; Walter "Wally" Schirra, Jr.; Alan B. Shepard, Jr.; Donald "Deke" Slayton. The signatures of Shepard and Grissom are faded. Matted and framed opposite a copy of Life magazine featuring the Mercury Seven. Entire piece measures 20 inches by 26 inches. An attractive and desirable piece, signed by all of the Mercury Seven astronauts. "The first seven American astronauts were an admirable group of individuals chosen to sit at the apex of a pyramid of human effort... They chose to lead by following the opportunity that chance, circumstance, technology and history had prepared for them" (Swenson, Grimwood & Alexander). NASA introduced the seven astronauts in Washington on April 9, 1959. Although the agency viewed Project Mercury's purpose as an experiment to determine whether humans could survive space travel, the seven men immediately became national heroes and were compared by TIME magazine to "Columbus, Magellan, Daniel Boone, and the Wright brothers" (TIME 1959).

[N.p., likely Los Angeles, 1959. [48],[2],48,10pp. largely rectos only. Contemporary glazed cloth boards, gilt. Minor wear at spine ends and corners, some rubbing. Very good. The original manuscript with numerous added items, presented by author James Warner Bellah to his friend, Charles Benton. James Warner Bellah was a veteran of both World War I and World War II, and a popular western author during the 1930s through the 1950s. He wrote numerous books and stories centering on cavalry and Indians, largely pulp fiction published in periodicals and paperbacks, and occasionally serialized in more respectable outlets such as the Saturday The present work is comprised of Bellah's handwritten manuscript (with numerous holographic corrections, emendations, and paste-overs), the typescript (with a few holographic corrections), and the published version of the short story (extracted from the magazine) bound together in that order. The recipient, Charles Benton presumably bound the manuscript, typescript, and magazine text together at a later date. The story is titled "Thirty Nine Days to Glory" and concerns the "real story of Custer's Last Fight" according to the subtitle added to the final printed version, which appeared in the September 1959 issue of HOLIDAY magazine. Bellah presented each item to Benton separately, each time including a presentation inscription; the inscription on the manuscript is dated Aug. 24, 1957, the others undated. Bellah included a signed note (also bound in) when he transmitted the manuscript to Benton that carries some importance for Bellah scholars, as he writes: "This is only one of two original manuscripts of mine that I have not burned as a matter of routine after they were typed. The other is that of 'The Valiant Virginians' which was requested by and is now on permanent exhibit at the Columbia University Library in New York. Who knows - you may ultimately have a fortune." An excellent literary item for the western collector, and the only obtainable Bellah manuscript in the world. EVENING POST. Several of Bellah's stories were adapted to film, including three by director John Ford: FORT APACHE, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, and RIO GRANDE. Bellah also co-wrote the screenplays for THE SEA CHASE and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and wrote for television throughout the 1950s and '60s.

(FRANK, ROBERT). Frank, Robert. Introduction by Jack Kerouac. ROBERT FRANK: THE AMERICANS. New York: Grove Press, Inc., 1959. First American Edition. Oblong 8vo. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/Good +. vi + np, profusely illustrated in b&w. "The Americans" is the iconic book that established transplanted Swiss photographer/filmmaker Robert Frank's reputation as one of the great socially conscious post-war essayists. Combined with the first appearance of Jack Kerouac's legendary in your face introduction ("Anybody doesnt like these pitchers dont like potry, see?"), Frank's images reveal an emerging cold war superpower wrestling with its past as it hurtles toward a decade of tumultuous change. An otherwise internally bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1959 first Grove Press, Inc. edition (whose 1958 Delpire first edition is cited on page 39 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 332-333 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 252-253 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing very light soiling along the top edge of the textblock along with a previous owner's name in ink on the front pastedown. The fragile dust jacket is present and complete, though showing a few creases and short closed tears along with some age-toning, light soiling, and foxing. All in all this is an unusually nice copy of a significant book that has been priced accordingly.         The Birthday Party

Encore Publishing Co., London 1959 - First edition. A trifle rubbed, still fine in wrappers. The uncommon true first edition of Pinter's first play. Inscribed by him to his first wife Vivien Merchant: "Dec. 59 To Vivien, Love D." The "D." is for David. Pinter, who was also an actor, used the stage name David Baron and almost all his early material inscribed to Merchant is signed thus. Neither this edition, nor the first trade edition published by Methuen in England contained a printed dedication. However, the first American edition, *The Birthday Party & The Room: Two Plays*, which was the first edition to contain a printed dedication, was dedicated to Merchant. Thus, to our lights, this could with fairness be considered the dedication copy of the Nobel laureate's first book -- it is certainly as close to one as could otherwise exist. An exceptional association copy of a very uncommon book. Housed in custom full cloth clamshell box. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

London, 1959. Darwin, Charles (1809-82). Cabinet-size portrait photograph by Maull & Polyblank. [London, ca. 1854]. 165 x 148 mm. Archivally framed (frame measures 363 x 308 mm.). Tiny areas of loss at left margin, but fine otherwise. Rare portrait by the noted Victorian photography firm of Maull & Polyblank, showing Darwin in middle age, seated and facing left, with his right hand on a table. This portrait was used as the frontispiece to Francis Darwin’s Life and Letters of Charles Darwin (1884), with a caption incorrectly identifying the photographers as Maull & Fox; the firm of Maull & Fox, a successor to Maull & Polyblank, was not established until 1879. During the past 55 or so years we have seen one example each of two different original photographs of Darwin on the market that were taken around the time of first publication of On the Origin of Species (1859). This is the only example of this famous portrait of Darwin that we have seen on the market during the past 55 years.
