An Important Archive of 90 Letters with Related Material Written to Saul Bellow in 1959, Mostly Concerning "The Noble Savage" and "Henderson the Rain King"

Various, 1959. A remarkable collection of correspondence received by Saul Bellow during the year he published "Henderson the Rain King" and co-founded the short-lived yet influential literary magazine "The Naked Savage". The lone Bellow SIGNED item a single typed sheet, marked page 5 and with his hand corrections, the final page of his essay "The Search for Symbols, a Writer Warns, Misses All the Fun and Fact of the Story", which was published Feb.15, 1959 in the NY Times. In all, 101 separate items, 90 of them SIGNED, both typed and handwritten, with 48 original postmarked envelopes. All but 3 of the items dated or attributable to the period July-November, 1959. Most of the material has to do with "The Naked Savage", and through these letters you can watch the magazine evolve. Amazing literary and personal content, including a warm full page handwritten letter from Ralph Ellison ( ..."Fanny is fine, Rufus goes around singing "I Love You Porgy", while I'm still coughing and sneezing my brain away.") typed letters from Lillian Hellman(1), Wright Morris(1), Alfred Leslie(1), Mark Harris(2), Dan Wakefield(2), Josephine Herbst(3), Harvey Swados(3), Herbert Gold(5), and handwritten letters from Harold Rosenberg(2), Keith Botsford(5), Richard Elman(1), Norman di Giovanni(1), Roberta Markels ( Bellow's lover)(3), and Edward Shils(1). And from the publishing side, letters from Aaron Asher, Pascal Covici, George Weidenfeld, Jack Ludwig, and Henry Volkening, among many others. Some of the related materials include royalty statements from Vanguard Press and Weidenfeld & Nicolson; a copy of the editor's contract for "The Noble Savage", and even a royalty deposit slip to Bellow's bank account ! These letters reveal much about the writers and their current writing, friendships, jealousies, travels, and career and life challenges. Overtly and between-the-lines, they also reveal much about Saul Bellow as a friend, mentor, lover, editor, and fellow writer. This stunning collection is from the estate of W. Carl Jackson, who at his death was Dean of Libraries at Indiana University.. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR.

Testi di Emilio Cecchi, Cesare Pavese, Giaime Pintor, Guido Piovene, Mario Soldati, Elio Vittorini, Simone de Beauvoir, Erskine Caldwell, Stephen Crane, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, André Maurois, Henry Miller, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Claude Roy, John Steinbeck, Alexis de Tocqueville, Harry Spencer Truman, Walt Whitman, Richard Wright, ecc., raccolti e presentati da Bosquet e Crovi. "With these photographs I have attempted to show a cross - section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. Stuart Alexander, Robert Frank: A Bibliography, Filmography, and Exhibition Chronology 1946 - 1985, Tucson, Arizona, 1986, p. 19. Martin Parr, The photobook, I, 247. Italiano

Emmanuel Chabrier". Autograph manuscript, signed twice.

      N. p., 1959. - Title page, 23 numbered pp. on 23 ff; half-title, pp. 24-78 on 55 ff. Blue ink on one-sided checked paper; proof reader's corrections in pencil. Spiral-bound cardboard wrappers, inscribed "Francis Poulenc I - Chabrier". Small 4to. One of only a few literary manuscripts by the eminent French composer, extremely rare in trade. In this paper, which appeared in 1961 at La Palatine publishers, Paris-Genève, Poulenc compresses, as he writes in the preface, "une véritable passion" that he felt from adolescence onwards for Chabrier's music, into a memorial full of warmth, enthusiasm, and linguistic beauty. - The present ms. comprises the preface, the introduction "Portrait de Chabrier", and Chapters I and II (cf. pp. 1-78 in the printed version); Chapters III and IV (in the book pp. 80-119) might have filled another, clearly thinner quarto issue, the whereabouts of which are unknown today and are not established by MGG or New Grove.         Typed Letter Signed

Remsenburg, New York: np. First Edition. Very Good. WODEHOUSE EXPLAINS THE LOCALES OF THE JEEVES STORIES. Dated Sept. 24, 1959 and on Wodehouse's Remsenburg letterhead, the letter reads in full: Dear Mr Nelson. Thank you for your letter. I wish I could give you some definite information about the locale of the Jeeves stories, but I never have any actual place in mind when I write them. Aunt Dahlia's house in Worcestershire is imaginary, though of course based to a certain extent on country houses I have known. Valley Fields, which is the scene of some of my stories, is Dulwich, where I was at school, but the actual houses in Mulberry Grove are invented. I always think an author takes a big chance when he writes of any identifiable place, as it is so easy to make mistakes. Especially in my case, as I am in America writing of England. It leads to letters beginning "Sir. Are you aware that the statue of the Mayor, described by you as in Market Square, East Nottleton, is in reality in Fishmonger Place?" Yours sincerely [signed] P.G. Wodehouse Long Island, NY: Sept. 24, 1959. One page (7 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches) on Wodehouse letterhead. Two light folds, otherwise fine. An illuminating and revealing letter giving insight into the settings of some of Wodehouse's most popular works.

        Disegni originali di Bianconi

Gorlich, 1959. ITA

        Coréennes.

Editions du Seuil 1959 - First edition. 247 x 198mm.,144pp., in the original paper covered, laminated boards, text in French. Paris, Éditions du Seuil, 1959. A very good copy with endemic minor damage on corner of spine and small bump on corner edge. Light rubbing to cover and some dirt marks to top corner of verso. Old price written in pencil on inside front. Scarce. Chris Marker was part of a small delegation of journalists allowed into North Korea for one week in 1958. This book contains over 120 black-and-white photographs from the trip, particularly portraits of women, together with illustrations from maps, comic books, street posters, paintings. Marker gives a commentary that examines Franco-Korean history and describes personal encounters behind the photographs. As Catherine Lupton puts it: “Coréennes is a testament to Marker’s abiding fascination with human encounters and his desire to push away the constraints of political and racial stereotyping”. Marker described Coréennes as a ‘Court métrage’ or ‘short film’. The first and only book in a ‘Court métrage’ series Marker intended to produce during his work as editor at Éditions du Seuil, where he also initiated 32 travel guides Petite Planéte and published William Klein’s Life is Good and Good For You In New York (1956).         SOCIETE PARITYS Et Les TISSUS LEBOTYS. Collection Été 1959

Societe Paritys / Lebotys, Paris 1959 - 108 pp. 16 color fashion drawings; ~800 pasted and tipped-in fabric samples. 16-1/4" x 12" A mid-century salesman's sample catalogue from the summer collection of Parisian firm Société Paritys, a haberdashery and fabric supplier established in 1946 and still in operation today. The fabric samples have been supplied by Lebotys, a couture design firm in its own right, and highly regarded for the quality of its textiles. As we find record of Lebotys having issued catalogues of its own collections in both the 1930s and 1960s, we speculate that the two firms collaborated for a limited time, possibly due to continuing post-war shortages and the need to adapt to the rapidly changing clothing market of the 1950s.The late 1950s saw a revolution in French fashion ? and, by extension, Western fashion in general ? due in no small part to the influence of material factors underlying the purely aesthetic side of the industry: availability of fabric, continuing technological advances in synthetics, and the surging post-war economies of America and Europe. The reluctant expansion of haute couture into the ready-to-wear market during the latter half of the century, and the increasing reliance on synthetic fabrics to meet the demand, would ultimately spell a major shift in the industry, one that would impact fashion trends for decades to come. Some fashion houses, like Dior, whose ?New Look? revitalized fashion at the beginning of the decade, successfully managed to adapt by issuing couture ready-to-wear lines. Some, however, even long-established houses, survived the war only to be undone by the prosperity that followed. The collaboration here of Société Paritys and Lebotys, as well as the fabrics offered and styles displayed, leads us to infer that the two firms were likely targeting the growing ready-to-wear market. The fabrics include a variety of silks, cottons, wools, mohair, muslin, cashmere, and others, as well as nylon, fibranne, rayon, Rhodia, tergal, crylor, acetate, Albène, and other ?Matieres Synthètiques,? often in blends, and advertising their washable and/or (anti)wrinkling qualities. The styles in the illustrations, although still influenced by the ?New Look,? also show the influence of Dior's successor, the young Yves St. Laurent, who debuted his "trapeze line" in 1958.No copies located on OCLC, nor the major French institutions (as searched on KVK). Light extremity wear to boards; short split to rear joint. Page block lightly foxed, occasional foxing/spotting to margins throughout. Few white nylon fabric samples discolored by paste beneath. Fabric samples otherwise clean and bright, with only minor occasional creasing/fraying. Overall, VG. Post binder with 3 brass posts. Publisher's pictorial glazed boards, white cloth joints [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Wildlife in America

NY: Viking. 1959. The dedication copy of his first book of nonfiction, which raises many of the issues that became the author's lifelong concerns and the subjects of many of his writings -- the impact of humans on the animals and plants of the ecosystems that we invade and then inhabit. The book was dedicated to his parents (by their initials), and is inscribed there by Matthiessen: "Sept. 18/ The very first copy of this book, taken, with its glue still wet, from the binder's warehouse on W. 20th [?] St. some five days before its publishers received their copies: [For E.C.M. and E.A.M. with love and many thanks] from Pete." That binding, which apparently hadn't dried when Matthiessen first picked up the book, is now cracked at the hinges; modest staining to boards; a good copy, lacking the dust jacket. First Edition.         A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic" WITH Abstracts of "Distinguished Constituents", "Semantical Analysis of Modal Logic", "The Problem of Entailment" in The Journal of Symbolic Logic Vol. 24, Issue No. 1, March 1959 pp. 1-14 WITH Vol. 24, Issue No. 4, Dec. 1959 pp. 323-324

FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION IN PRISTINE ORIGINAL WRAPS OF SAUL KRIPKE'S SEMINAL FIRST PAPER ON MODAL LOGIC, "A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic". The paper presents Kripke's important ideas on the semantics of modal logic, or the logic of modal notions like necessity and possibility. Included are all 4 Journal issues for 1959, one of which is inclusive of abstracts of 3 other papers Kripke sent to the Journal. "Universally hailed" for this work, in this paper, Kripke both proves the formal completeness of modal logic (supplemented by first-order quantifiers and the sign of equality) and "create[s] a semantics, now called Kripke semantics" (Hurley, Logic: The Essentials, 217). Kripke semantics "is a formals semantics for non-classical logic systems… first conceived for modal logics, and later adapted to intuitionistic logic and other non-classical systems. The discovery of Kripke semantics was a breakthrough in the theory of non-classical logics, because the model theory of such logics was almost non-existent before Kripke (algebraic semantics existed, but were considered 'syntax in disguise'). (Wikipedia). Saul Kripke grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and in 1959, he mailed this paper to The Journal of Symbolic Logic. As the story goes, the Kripke wrote his completeness theorem in modal logic at age 17; the paper was sent out for comments, to, among a number of others, the head of the Harvard mathematics department. This person then wrote Kripke urging him to apply for a job at Harvard. The reply he received read: "My mother said that I should finish high school and go to college first" (ibid). Kripke's initial intuitive idea was that a proposition is necessary if and only if it is true in all possible worlds. In this paper, Kripke begins by stating: "The present paper attempts to state and prove a completeness theorem for the system S5, supplemented by first-order quantifiers and the sign of equality" (Kripke, JSL, 24,1, 1959, 1). He then notes: "The basis of the informal analysis which motivated these definitions is that a proposition is necessary if and only if it is true in all "possible worlds". (It is not necessary for our present purposes to analyze the concept of a "possible world" any further.) ... In modal logic, however, we wish to know not only about the 6 real world but about other conceivable worlds" (Kripke, 2) Shortly, Kripke then wrote "In trying to construct a definition of universal logical validity, it seems plausible to assume not only that the universe of discourse may contain an arbitrary number of elements and that predicates may be assigned any given interpretations in the actual world, but also that any combination of possible worlds may be associated with the real world with respect to some group of predicates. In other words, it is plausible to assume that no further restrictions need be placed on D, G, and K, except the standard one that D be non-empty. This assumption leads directly to our definition of universal validity." (Kripke, 3). The December issue of the Journal is also included as it contains abstracts of other Kripke papers received by the Journal in 1959: "Distinguished Constituents", "Semantical Analysis of Modal Logic", "The Problem of Entailment". Also included are the three other issues of The Journal of Symbolic Logic from 1959, this to make a complete set. All four issues are in near fine condition. Saul Kripke (1940- ) is an American philosopher and logician who was awarded the Rolf Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy in 2001. He is best known for five major contributions to philosophy beginning with this paper, the starting point for Kripke Semantics. In 1962 Kripke graduated from Harvard University, where he remained until 1968, first as a member of the Harvard Society of Fellows and then as a lecturer. Subsequently, his 1970 lectures "Naming and Necessity" was a focal point for restructuring the philosophy of language. Now associated with Princeton, additional areas of note include his contributions to set theory, his theory of truth and his interpretation of Wittgenstein's work. CONDITION & DETAILS: Four first edition, first impression issues in original wraps. New Jersey: The Association for Symbolic Logic. Octavo. 10 x 7 inches; 250 x 150mm. All four issues are in near fine condition both inside and out.
