        Starship Troopers

309 pp. 8vo. The Hugo Award winning novel that inspired the film of the same name, by one of the fathers of the modern science fiction genre. In one of Heinlein's most controversial best-sellers, a recruit in a future world is sent through the toughest boot camp in the Universe to join the Terran Mobile Infantry in battle against mankind's most alarming enemy. Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Reserve on a lark, but despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper. In boot camp he learns how to become a soldier, but it is in war that he will learn why. Many consider this Hugo Award-winning book to be Heinlein's best. Forget the battle scenes and the high-tech weapons; this is Heinlein in his element, talking people and politics. Keywords: FICTION SCIENCE STARSHIP TROOPERS ROBERT A HEINLEIN OUTER SPACE INTERPLANETARY ADVENTURE PLANETARY INTERGALACTIC GALACTIC GALAXY GALAXIES MILITARY STAR SHIP SPACESHIP TERRAN MOBILE INFANTRY ALIENS First edition in new facsimile jacket (denoted as such on flap). » Alain Robbe-Grillet.

A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic" WITH Abstracts of "Distinguished Constituents", "Semantical Analysis of Modal Logic", "The Problem of Entailment" in The Journal of Symbolic Logic Vol. 24, Issue No. 1, March 1959 pp. 1-14 WITH Vol. 24, Issue No. 4, Dec. 1959 pp. 323-324

      - FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION IN PRISTINE ORIGINAL WRAPS OF SAUL KRIPKE'S SEMINAL FIRST PAPER ON MODAL LOGIC, "A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic". The paper presents Kripke's important ideas on the semantics of modal logic, or the logic of modal notions like necessity and possibility. Included are all 4 Journal issues for 1959, one of which is inclusive of abstracts of 3 other papers Kripke sent to the Journal. "Universally hailed" for this work, in this paper, Kripke both proves the formal completeness of modal logic (supplemented by first-order quantifiers and the sign of equality) and "create[s] a semantics, now called Kripke semantics" (Hurley, Logic: The Essentials, 217). Kripke semantics "is a formals semantics for non-classical logic systems? first conceived for modal logics, and later adapted to intuitionistic logic and other non-classical systems. The discovery of Kripke semantics was a breakthrough in the theory of non-classical logics, because the model theory of such logics was almost non-existent before Kripke (algebraic semantics existed, but were considered 'syntax in disguise'). (Wikipedia). Saul Kripke grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and in 1959, he mailed this paper to The Journal of Symbolic Logic. As the story goes, the Kripke wrote his completeness theorem in modal logic at age 17; the paper was sent out for comments, to, among a number of others, the head of the Harvard mathematics department. This person then wrote Kripke urging him to apply for a job at Harvard. The reply he received read: "My mother said that I should finish high school and go to college first" (ibid). Kripke's initial intuitive idea was that a proposition is necessary if and only if it is true in all possible worlds. In this paper, Kripke begins by stating: "The present paper attempts to state and prove a completeness theorem for the system S5, supplemented by first-order quantifiers and the sign of equality" (Kripke, JSL, 24,1, 1959, 1). He then notes: "The basis of the informal analysis which motivated these definitions is that a proposition is necessary if and only if it is true in all "possible worlds". (It is not necessary for our present purposes to analyze the concept of a "possible world" any further.) . In modal logic, however, we wish to know not only about the 6 real world but about other conceivable worlds" (Kripke, 2) Shortly, Kripke then wrote "In trying to construct a definition of universal logical validity, it seems plausible to assume not only that the universe of discourse may contain an arbitrary number of elements and that predicates may be assigned any given interpretations in the actual world, but also that any combination of possible worlds may be associated with the real world with respect to some group of predicates. In other words, it is plausible to assume that no further restrictions need be placed on D, G, and K, except the standard one that D be non-empty. This assumption leads directly to our definition of universal validity." (Kripke, 3). The December issue of the Journal is also included as it contains abstracts of other Kripke papers received by the Journal in 1959: "Distinguished Constituents", "Semantical Analysis of Modal Logic", "The Problem of Entailment". Also included are the three other issues of The Journal of Symbolic Logic from 1959, this to make a complete set. All four issues are in near fine condition. Saul Kripke (1940- ) is an American philosopher and logician who was awarded the Rolf Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy in 2001. He is best known for five major contributions to philosophy beginning with this paper, the starting point for Kripke Semantics. In 1962 Kripke graduated from Harvard University, where he remained until 1968, first as a member of the Harvard Society of Fellows and then as a lecturer. Subsequently, his 1970 lectures "Naming and Necessity" was a focal point for restructuring the philosophy of language. Now associated with Princeton, additional areas of note in

A Significant Archive of Published Works Honoring the Uruguayan Poet, 1959-1975

Eighteen books and six periodicals, comprising a significant archive of publications issued by the Esterist movement in Levens, France and elsewhere. Largely devotional in nature, the works praise Uruguayan poet Jose Parrilla as a god-like figure capable of bestowing spiritual enlightenment to his followers. Representative of the Esterists' later mystical period, the collection sheds light on Parrilla's transformation from an avant-garde artist influenced by Joaquin Torres-Garcia's Constructivism in the 1940s and 1950s into an isolated guru figure in the Alpes-Maritimes region of France in the 1960s and 1970s. Sizes and formats vary. Items in fine or near-fine condition. 1959-1975. Known to his disciples as "P." Jose Parrilla (1918-1994) rose to prominence as a controversial erotic and surrealist poet in his native Montevideo in the early 1940s, where, along with his wife, Alma Castillo and friend Raul Javiel Cabrera, a.k.a. Cabrerita (both painters), he drew inspiration from Joaquin Torres-Garcia's Asocacion de Arte Constructivo. Around 1944 he founded the Esterist movement and popular artistic collective comprised of writers, sculptors, and artists, named for his poem that repeats the name Ester over 700 times in 200 lines. In 1948, Parrilla, Castillo and Cabrerita moved to Valladolid, Spain, where they spread the ideas of Esterism and were instrumental in the creation of "Pascual Leteros," an avant-garde art movement including Publio Wifrido Otero, Gerardo Pintado, Primitivo Cano, Lorenzo Freschilla and Teodoro Calderon. The Letreros defied both the local art establishment and Franco's authoritarian state with their outlandishly staged performance-lectures and gallery exhibitions. After conflicts with authorities in Valladolid they moved to Barcelona in the early 1950s. Parrilla split from the group to hone the "philosophy" of Esterism, privileging an "anonymous, collective folk art" over individual production. After further controversy, Parrilla and his followers (including Cano and Fernande Dalezio, who edited and published much of the Esterist print material) moved to the South of France in 1958, where they established a commune devoted to his teachings.

The Little Disturbances of Man [Inscribed Association Copy]

Doubleday, Garden City 1959 - A wonderful association copy of her first book, a collection of stories, by a writer who helped define the role of women and politics in contemporary literature: engaged without being didactic, Paley focused on both the ordinariness and the wonder of everyday life. Inscribed by Paley to Jean Stafford and her third husband, the journalist A.J. Liebling: "To Jean & Joe -- Grace Paley." Like Paley, Stafford's greatest medium was the short story: her Collected Stories won the Pulitzer Prize in 1970. Paley's Collected Stories, which included stories from this title, was a finalist for both the Pulitzer and the National Book Award, 25 years later.         Uelsmann explains how he created the Floating tTree and Peapod image. Typed Letter Signed, with hand written corrections, on verso of a copy print of his photograph untitled (Floating tree and peapod, 1969 original) 4to, Gainseville, FL, June 11, 1976

. Writing on the back of a "copy print" which he so identifies, of this well known image, he explains the technical process to his friend Harry. It seems clear from the text that Harry would understand the photographic processes referenced in the letter suggesting Harry was also a photographer. Uelsmann specifically discusses his use of Cronapaque which, apparently, "Harry" introduced him to. Uelsmann says "how important Cronapaque has become in my darkroom play." He discusses the "Floating Trees" image on the reverse saying "the pea pod in water was introduce [sic] with Cronapaque" and continues, "was photographed on a black background… then printed on Cronapaque so that the positive pod appeared near bottom and rest of the Cronapaque is black…." He gives a full explanation of how he uses the "Cronapaque mask." Cronapaque, a trademark of the DuPont de Nemours company (patent filed 1959) is a translucent graphic arts film [according to a springer.com link to an article on neuroradiology]. Uelsmann ends with "Diane and I both hope this letter finds you in good health," and signs, "Friendly thoughts, Jerry." Diane [Diane Farris, the photographer] was Uelsmann's second wife whom he married in 1975.

Black cloth-covered boards, spine lettered in silver and red, upper side blocked in silver; light handling marks and minor toning to page edges, front top corner lightly bumped. Siskind’s presentation inscription in black ink on front free endpaper. An excellent copy in a very good dust-jacket. First edition of Siskind’s first book, a presentation copy inscribed: ‘Cora in love / Aaron / 3/13/61’. Cora Ginsburg was a scholar and dealer who specialised in museum quality antique costume and textiles. Her mother, Bertha Kling, had met Aaron Siskind during a camping trip in upstate New York in the 1920s, and she and her family remained friends with Siskind for decades. From 1950 Cora worked with her husband Benjamin Ginsburg at his family’s antiques firm in Manhattan. At Ginsburg Levy, and later Benjamin Ginsburg Antiquary, she was the buyer of textiles, needlework, ceramics, silver and brass. When her husband retired in 1982 she opened her own gallery on the Upper East Side called Cora Ginsburg LLC. She did much to develop the field of collecting costumes, and was a consultant to Colonial Williamsburg, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and other major institutions. After an initial career teaching English in public schools Aaron Siskind joined the New York Workers’ Film and Photo League (1932-35) and later the Photo League (1936-41) and was actively involved. However, he left in the early-forties saying that ‘the so-called documentary picture left me wanting something. For some reason or other there was in me the desire to see the world clean and fresh and alive, as primitive things are clean and fresh and alive.’ He began experimenting with the medium’s capacity for abstraction, making photographs of rocks, rust, graffiti and peeling plaster, echoing and influenced by his association with Franz Kline and the the emerging Abstract Expressionist painters.       Warner Brothers, Burbank, CA 1959 - Draft script for the 1960 film "Ocean's Eleven," seen here as "Oceans Eleven or And the Angels Sing." Copy belonging to actor Peter Lawford, with his name to the front wrapper and his holograph notations throughout. Lawford," a copy of a contract between Lawford and talent agent Milton Ebbins, and a clipping of a full-page advertisement for the film from Variety Magazine. A classic and well-loved heist film, "Ocean's Eleven" is the quintessential Rat Pack picture, in which a group of World War II veterans attempts a series of high-profile casino robberies in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve.
