London England 1959 - Half page single spaced typed on both sides.22 Oct 1959. He got an answer from Uganda and he wrote back requesting more information (about the elephant hunting project). Talks about hunting seasons and processing meat for export. Suggests considering a 3 or 5 month safari and letting the natives attend to the meat and not worry about making a lot of money. They would have to put up some money as a good faith gesture to Uganda. Taylor would have to make enough to cover his expenses. A great summary of John Taylor's proposed hunting/meat selling project. The letter is to Alexander Maitland who authored several books and wrote introductions to several Taylor books. He was also executor of Taylor's estate. Fine. The show featured the work of Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Frederick Hammersley, and John McLaughlin. The term ?abstract classicists? was coined in 1959 by Langsner to define these four southern California painters. The exhibition opened at the San Francisco Museum of Art (now the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), and then travelled to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Exposition Park (prior to LACMA?s existence as an independent art museum). Renamed ?West Coast Hard-edge,? the revised version later traveled to the institute of Contemporary Art in London and Queen?s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In the exhibition catalog, Langsner describes Abstract Classicist painting as "Hard-edge painting" in which "color and shape are one and the same entity. Form gains its existence through color and color its being through form. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Prima e unica edizione. Direzione grafica di Giulio Confalonieri e Ilio Negri, schema di impaginazione di Giuseppe Trevisani. At the time he made Milano Carrieri was associated with the italian neo-realist photographers, such as Cesare Columbo and Mario di Biasi, before he went on to become a distinguished photographer of sculpture. He made books of other cities, but none this extreme. Its concentration on the seamier side of life makes Milano one of the most important works of the neorealist tendency of the 1950s (Parr / Badger). Volevo produrre una città non riprodurla. Niente battute fotografiche. Niente formalismo. Niente inchieste. The Menace From Earth, the publisher's file copy of the first edition, signed by the publisher

Gnome Press, Hicksville, New York 1959 - This is the publisher’s file copy of the first edition, first printing, a collector-worthy first edition with compelling provenance. The front pastedown is signed by the publisher in three lines: "Gnome Press | File Copy | Martin Greenberg". Martin L. Greenberg (b.1918) served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War and in 1948, along with David A. Kyle, started the Gnome Press. That same year they published Gnome’s first book, The Carnelian Cube, by L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Platt. Eighty-six titles were published by the Gnome Press. Financial pressure and the challenge of competing with larger science fiction publishers led Gnome Press to close in 1962. Nonetheless, "In its first five years, Gnome would publish Robert Heinlein’s Sixth Column, The Sands of Mars and Against the Fall of Night by Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot and the three volumes of the Foundation trilogy, Clifford M. Simak’s award-winner City and his Cosmic Engineers, reprints of Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories, and works by L. Ron Hubbard, Jack Williamson, C. L. Moore, A. E. van Vogt, Leigh Brackett, Henry Kuttner, Hal Clement and half a dozen others. That’s Golden Age science fiction in a nutshell." (Steve Carper). Gnome Press published Heinlein’s The Menace from Earth in 1959. This is a collection of eight short stories originally written between 1941 and 1957, including one bearing the volume title. As such, the collection is an iconic distillate of Heinlein’s early career and work, which evolved substantively after the 1959 publication of Starship Troopers and the 1961 publication of Stranger in a Strange Land. This publisher’s file copy of the first edition, first printing is near fine in a very good plus dust jacket. The binding remains square, clean, bright, and tight with sharp corners. The contents are clean with a crisp feel and no spotting or previous ownership marks apart from the publisher's inked signature and file copy designation. Even the untrimmed fore edge and top edge are clean. The only flaw that prevents our grading this copy as truly fine is age-toning. The illustrated dust jacket is unfaded, retaining bright red spine print on both the spine and front cover. We note only fractional chipping at the spine head with scattered spotting, most evident to the jacket spine. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.       Praha: Statni Nakladatestvi, 1959. First edition. Hardcover. Sudek, Josef. Oblong 4to., 284 gravure panoramic plates. Publisher's printed white cloth. A very good and bright copy in the photo-illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket is worn and torn at the edges and folds, and has several discreet repairs with archival tissue on the blank reverse. Josef Sudek was called "The Poet of Prague"; there was no part of this ancient city, the capital of Bohemia, nor its surroundings, that was not examined and photographed by him. He published several collections of his work over a career that spanned 60 years, and this volume is regarded as his masterpiece.
