West African market literature: A collection of 30 examples

[Mostly Onitsha]: Various Publishers, 1959-1970s. Uniformly very good or better in stapled, printed wrappers.. Various printings. 30 slim octavo pamphlets. An excellent, representative sampling of the popular literature that flourished in West African market stalls in the 1960s and 70s, most of it characterized by sensational (and even slightly prurient) content, rustic production values, and a disarmingly naive (to an American reader's eyes at least) approach to its subject matter.         Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour An Introduction

Little, Brown & Co, New York 1959 - Quality copy of this reclusive author's fourth book. 8vo 5.25" x 8" pp. [2] 3-248. Includes the misspelling of "Sey-more: for Seymour on page 173 that was identified in the Little Brown proof copy and was supposed to be corrected in the second printing of the First Edition. This book has the dedication page tipped in after copyright page and before the title page for "Raise High the Roofbeams." though copyright page says (1957, 1959) book actually came out in 1963. Author's last published authorized book in his lifetime. Previous owner name in pen on FFE, DJ has minute spot on front cover, chipping of beige color at top of spine. If you cannot own a FE of "Catcher in the Rye", then this book will bring great cache to your shelf. "My last guest had evidently let himself out of the apartment. Only his empty glass, and his cigar end in the pewter ashtray, indicated that he had ever existed. I still rather think his cigar end should have been forwarded on to Seymour, the usual run of wedding gifts being what it is. Just the cigar in a small, ice box. Possibly with a blank sheet of paper enclosed, by way of explanation," (p 107]. Dark gray cloth with gold on spine having minimal fading [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Arabian Sands

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1959. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Wilfred Thesiger on the title page, with a contemporary signature. An excellent example in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Map unopened in the inside pocket of the rear pastedown. Though educated at Eton and Oxford, Wilfred Thesiger was repulsed by the softness and rigidity of Western life-"the machines, the calling cards, the meticulously aligned streets." In the spirit of T. E. Lawrence, he set out to explore the deserts of Arabia, traveling among peoples who had never seen a European and considered it their duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-classic account is invaluable to understanding the modern Middle East. "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia" (The Daily Telegraph, London).

        Milano, Italia

Lerici, 1959. Prima e unica edizione. Direzione grafica di Giulio Confalonieri e Ilio Negri, schema di impaginazione di Giuseppe Trevisani. "At the time he made Milano Carrieri was associated with the italian neo-realist photographers, such as Cesare Columbo and Mario di Biasi, before he went on to become a distinguished photographer of sculpture. He made books of other cities, but none this extreme. Its concentration on the seamier side of life makes Milano one of the most important works of the neorealist tendency of the 1950s" (Parr / Badger). "Volevo produrre una città non riprodurla. Niente "battute fotografiche". Niente formalismo. Niente inchieste. Solo scelta di un linguaggio e di un racconto che stiano al di là della realtà oggettiva: e vengano proposte da una particolare regia, in immagini meno lente possibili. All'origine una sorta di rabbia nei confronti di ciò che è scontato. Il mito della metropoli. Rabbia di fronte alle parvenze e rabbia anche per ciò che già sapevo sulle "tecniche di ripresa" (dal risvolto di sovraccoperta). Parr / Badger, The Photobook: A History, I, p. 214. Italiano

        Ronald Knox.

1959 - First edition. Large 8vo., original blue cloth, dust jacket. London, Chapman & Hall. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: ?For Fr. Martin D'Arcy S.J., with deep affection from Evelyn Waugh, 8th October 1959? The inter-war years saw an extraordinary boom in the numbers of Catholic converts, and D'Arcy ?an unashamed tuft-hunter . [who] . faithfully followed the Jesuit tradition established in England of concentrating on the upper echelons of society, on the well-tried principle of the bigger the stone the bigger the ripple.? (Hastings), received Waugh into the Church in 1930: his ?fine, slippery mind? (Waugh), was the perfect foil for Waugh's doubts and certainties, and Waugh was to depend on his faith profoundly: Nancy Mitford once asked Waugh how he reconciled 'being so horrible with being a Christian. He replied rather sadly that were he not a Christian he would be even more horrible . & anyway would have committed suicide years ago'? (Hastings). D'Arcy ?so far from Ronald in mind, so near him in friendship? (Waugh) preached at his funeral in 1957. A near fine copy in dust jacket, preserved in a quarter leather Solander box.         Live and Let Die

London: Jonathan Cape. 1959 - Hardcover reprint. AN INSCRIBED ASSOCIATION COPY. Publisher's black, gilt-embossed cloth-effect paper over boards, in purple dustwrapper. Minor wear, a little bumped, jacket with some wear to extremities, rubbed to joints. Very good. SIGNED by the author to the flyleaf. This copy is from the library of Stan Meyer, with his ownership plate to the endpaper. Meyer was the film producer responsible for 'Dragnet', the most successful police series on US television, and had an interest in acquiring the early James Bond titles for the big screen. Fleming first met him in August 1954 and presented an inscribed American first edition of Casino Royale (this copy previously sold through our offices). Although no film deal was forthcoming, the pair became friends and a character in the third book 'Moonraker' (Drax's card-playing partner Max Meyer), was named in his honour. They kept in contact and Meyer received several signed Fleming titles over the next few years. An important copy. See Gilbert, Jon; Ian Fleming: The Bibliography, pages 47, 90, 666.         Original Watercolour Artwork for the 1959 Paperback Edition of The Dark Frontier.

1959. 1959 - The watercolour illustration measures 53cm x 34cm and is SIGNED by the artist, Oliver Brabbins, on the lower left. It is mounted and framed, the total size of the yellow metal effect frame is 75.5cm x 55cm. A striking design of the cover for the First Paperback Edition of this title. Based on the development of weaponry in the year 1936, The Dark Frontier was one of the first novels to predict the invention of a nuclear bomb and its consequences. Ambler evidently had no knowledge of what producing an atomic bomb may involve (even professional physicists at the time had only a vague idea). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
